View Full Version : The Amory Wars- I feel like a cosplay pioneer

So if anyone here knows the band Coheed and Cambria, you've probably heard about the story that surrounds the band's work. It's been compiled into a comics series/book by their front man Claudio Sanchez. Right now I'm creating a costume of The Prise to hopefully be completed for Comic Con 2011 if money flow allows and everything goes according to plan (It's quite likely that nothing will go according to plan at this point). Usually Claudio Sanchez does a signing every year so at least I'd know that he'd recognize me if nobody else at the con would. Does anybody else know this series, or is interested in this series, or wants to cosplay a character from this series, or am I truly alone here?

OMG I LOVE THIS SERIES.
I want to eventually, do a Paranoia cosplay in her battle armor. But that'll take me some time to whip together. And it'd probably be for Dragoncon here on the east coast because I doubt any anime con would know wtf I'm doing.

WOOT!!! I'm not the only one :) Yeah, my cosplay ability is limited because this will be my first. I'm reworking the version of Ondria's costume (the purple robe thing) for mine because I know that's not completely beyond my ability. The wings are so difficult though and I really hope they don't end up being what prevents me from showing off this costume at Comic Con later this year. I really don't expect too many people to recognize who I'm cosplaying as once I'm finished. I'm simply doing this because I love the series (the music is amazing too) and it would be great to get more people into it.

Could always do Ambellina if you're worried about wings!

Truth, but there are so many other complexities as far as the way that Ambellina is portrayed in the comics that make her almost just, if not more difficult. The black leotard suit she wears looks leather, but it's skin tight. However there is no way I would want to work with pleather, plus her body suit isn't exactly shiny, and finding a non shiny pleather suit is tough. The boots that she wear go up to her thighs and then cut off in a really wonky style as well. It would be fantastic, but at the same time, I'd rather work with the feathers at this point. I've invested so much time and money in creating wings already that I'm pretty committed to the idea. I figure that if anything, I can just wear the costume to next year's Comic Con, or wear what I have because I won't be recognizable to most people anyways, and then finish it for next year.
Anyways, what I'm doing to make the costume that I have planned is that I'm buying a low end corset and covering it in either a particular lace, or feathers. I'm also buying some boy shorts or a string bikini bottom and doing something similar. Then I'm going to modify a wrap dress pattern and turn it into a robe with some sheer violet material so it's possible to see what is underneath. I'm using PAX body paint to make myself blue, and a wig to make my hair blonde again, if I don't manage to make my natural hair color (which is blonde) come back by con time. I'll probably get one of those keywork necklaces and modify it just a bit to make it prettier so I can affiliate myself with the series. If I have the money and utilities I'll turn it into a tiara, but I doubt it. Wing construction is being done with malleable chicken wiring, sheer cloth, feathers, glue, and stretchy belts so far.
My sewing skills are still pretty limited at this point lol...

For my blue, since I've seen PAX body paint and sometimes it just doesn't work, I'm getting a zentai suit. But since I'm doing battle armor, a lot of the blue and seaming will be covered up, plus I can hide the wing harness underneath it. But yeah, until I get more reliable funding, it's all in the planning stage.
And of course likely Ben Nye for the face because it's easy to mix and match with the body suit color.

Oh, sounds like you've got a good plan going for you as well. :)
I thought a body suit would be good too, but again, my sewing is so very limited. Maybe I should experiment with a few different types of body paint. I was only going to use the paint on my upper body, and wear tights that match, as well as using Ben Nye for my face...

You can buy zentai suits, no sewing required! Also with zentai you can pad it some to build up your bust (since the Prise are pretty voluptuous ladies)
I'm sewing retarded too, I usually commission. I know my armor is going to be made using a craft foam armor tutorial I've seen floating around here.

Yeah no kidding... I'm lacking in the voluptuous department for sure. I'll definitely check out zentai suits and options for blue-ness too lol. I think my only question about zentai suits so far is how to coordinate face make up with them so everything still looks seamless...

I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure on the version I'm doing, Paranoia is wearing a gold choker which I can use to hide the neckline. You may be able to do the same. I doubt anybody's gunna get you on inaccuracy if you're doing it to hide seams.
And Ben Nye paint and kryolan aquacolor are both easy to mix to get the right shade to match the suit.

Well, I'm changing up a lot about the costume in general but I should certainly be recognizable to fans of the series. Plus I'm not dressing as any specific Prise, so I can probably fudge a lot. I think wearing the keywork will help a lot as well. My Amory War comic collection is at home so I really need to bring it here to school so I can go over all of the different versions of The Prise. I know as the illustrators change in the series, the coloring and styling of them become slightly different, so for me it becomes a pick and choose type of thing. I do want it to look good however, because presenting the costume in front of Claudio himself (hopefully he'll be making an appearance as usual) will be really nerve wrecking. One thing I think I'm going to overlook is the pointed ears, and that's just due to cash flow. If I have the money though I'll do it.
