What is your guys' opinion on people who cosplay as a commonly recognized character from an anime, yet do their own street/punk spin on the design? Such as a street-wear version of a Kingdom Hearts character? Do you look down on those who do not stick to the original designs, or do you enjoy seeing less formal versions of your favorite characters?

I really appreciate your opinions! :bigtu:

I enjoy it, as long as I can still tell that street!Sora is Sora. It makes that cosplayer stand out among the how-ever-many Soras in the con. But it only works if it's something that character would wear.

For me, it depends. If you're say...doing a photoshoot, participating in a competition whether it be the masquerade or the cosplay competition...I never really approve of "street clothing" cosplays.

If, however, you are doing it for fun, maybe for the rave, a gathering, or just to walk around in...I think they can be a lot of fun and I love seeing the ideas people come up with, so long as I can actually tell it's that character. You can't imagine how many people dress up as "street cloud" or "gothic sasuke" or "Emo Ichigo" that all I can do is look at them like "...um. Who ARE YOU supposed to be?"

An important thing to remember is to keep to the character and always bring in elements from their character. For instance, as mentioned: Sora. There are certain elements that make people recognize sora. His spikey hair, His necklace, but most of all, his funny clown shoes. If you notice, no matter WHAT outfit he's wearing, he's wearing those silly shoes, the necklace, and he still has that spikey hair. If you're going to do street Sora, it'd be important to have all of those elements intertwined with your design. :)

Personally I love ideas like this ^-^

and as previous posters have said I like to be able to RECOGNIZE the character. For example, a preppy (like bright colors and none of his blue) sasuke. what?! who the heck would recognize that?! and if that person was thinking "everyone is going to know who I am because sasuke is just so dang awesome"...no they aren't, not everyone loves sasuke, and even those who do would probably not know who he was if he was all nice and bright and stuff. (just an example I am not hating on sasuke)

BUT if you can recognize the character then I am perfectly fine with it. I'm actually planning to do a street/punk-like Roxas in the future xD

^ What they said.
I really enjoy seeing alternate cosplays 'cause it adds so much diversity. Also it takes a fair bit of creativity and vision to get it to be recognizable as said character instead of "oh, it's a person wearing a wig..." And I really like seeing how other people view the characters personality and how it appears in how they dress.

I think it's creative, I had a friend who did a Steampunk version of a character and it turned out nicely :)
Go ahead, and do it, besides, I get quite tired of seeing x number of a said character, let's have some originality people! Chances are, this costume can be a make or break (as in people will love your for your originality but on the other hand may make your character less recognisable).
I've noticed in some notable threads that people are choosing to do something different to a character within a series, or picking more obscure versions, it's nice to see a variety :)
Also, knowing you might be the only one who did this to that character which adds to the awesomeness, especially if it's of your own design, then nobody will have done the same ;)

I think that a character design was created for a reason and, consequently, it's unfair and disrespectful towards the author to change around the design. But you do whatever you want, money is yours after all.

Thanks for your input so far guys. :)

See, the thing is, I've been trying to do a Zexion cosplay for the past year, but I haven't had the money for the right material for the coat, my sewing machine is total crap because it's older than my mother, and it badly needs some fine tuning, or to be replaced. I have a nearly finished wig, but Ohayocon is next weekend and I was thinking, well how the heck am I supposed to do this?

I was planning on borrowing a pair of ripped jeans from one of my guy friends (since I'm female and the only jeans I have are tight ones, and crossplaying in skinny jeans doesn't work well when you have rather wide hips). I have a black muscle shirt I'm going to wear, which will cover my binding almost perfectly, and I was thinking about adding a sort of punk/goth look to the mix. I'm going to borrow a pair of elbow length fingerless gloves from a friend, perhaps a nobody necklace, a belt, and some chains. I also own a black wool trenchcoat that I could add in. It's hoodless, but still pretty wicked.

What do you think?

And my whole intention was to keep from buying much at all for this cosplay because I don't have much money at the moment. Eventually, I want to crossplay the original design, but I don't have the means as of yet and figured a substitute would be just as fun. I'm not planning on entering any contests or photoshoots, unless my Axel, Demyx, and Roxas all decide that they're going to attend the group photoshoot and they drag me with them.
