ok so for an upcoming anime convention i'm going to, me and my friend thought about hosting a OC panel. I was wondering what all ideas everyone had for activities and discussion for an OC panel. we would do the obvious 'bring pictures of your OC' for discussion and share ideas that you have for your story n such. (possibly come dressed as your OC for fun) but other than that i cant think of anything else we would do?

my only guess is Original Character? but that would be OC (uppercase) and I can't see why that would be off-topic. maybe they will enlighten us on this new "Oc" thing. :)

correction
you " C "
and cannot un-C

I do plenty OC crap. Keeps my brain from giving into vocaloids, naruto, squarecircletriangle-soft, and hetalia etc franchises out there. I'd support the idea of such a panel.

Questions you could answer;

What is an original character? (Seriously, start with the basics, you'll attract more people)

What kinds of original character are there? (Original characters within existing franchises i.e. original Hetalia Nations/State-tans/cities, original gijinka characters, characters from your own stories/comics/art, or whatever, you can probably think of more)

How can you develop an original character design? (What's the process YOU go through? What resources are there to draw on? Historical books, clothing from other countries, fashion blogs?)

This topic has come up several times with me in the past week, I was thinking of making a thread on it as a result. I think tips or discussion on the process of concepting and developing the design would be very helpful for people. What I'm getting from people is "how the heck to you start? how do you come up with an idea?"

I also think you need to consider if this is an Original Characer 101 panel, in which case you need to provide a good platform of the basics. Or whether you want to have an upper level panel where people are discussing creative process or techniques in more depth.

It's also worth noting that an Original Character and an Original Design are not necessarily the same thing. The former is an character and costume developed completely from scratch; the latter can mean that the person is just creating an alternate outfit for an existing popular character. Those are very different creative processes and I think should be addressed individually. People often use the terms interchangeably in conversation, but there is a difference and it will likely help beginners to have that distinction.

Also, you may want to contact a mod and ask them to move this thread into a more appropriate category, like Original Designs or General Cosplay Chat. Off-topic is for things that are NOT cosplay related. This thread is most definitely about cosplay.

the OC thing is kind of behind me, mostly because people have no idea who i am and i feel like an idiot trying to explain

Personally, I like to have fun with that. It's like a Rorschach test, seeing what people project onto the costume and what they think it is. And sometimes if people are particularly annoying or ignorant I like to mess with them by answering "what are you?" with things like "I'm FAB-U-LOUS! what the hell are you?" ;)

But I think rubyspitfire raises a good issue to have in the panel: how to deal with questions, how to succinctly present your idea without boring people, how to deal with a lack of attention in comparison to popular mainstream characters, etc.

So one could make an argument either way.

And I agree it would be good to talk about what kind of places you get ideas from. I don't have much experience with original characters, but as for my character Raniver (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2147414/) - I got some inspiration from some old Super Nintendo video games and that Magic: The Gathering card game.
