This has been brought up a few time on GCC chat but I felt extending past cosplay and talk about things they said about anime/manga/video games/whatever. Also doesn't have to be parents but also other relatives, friends, etc.

I have some Death Note figures and one time my mom picked up L and said "Why is Harry Potter in this position?"

While showing my sister the first Death Note movie, she asked me to pause it so she can ask a question. "How can he be in two places at once?" Apparently she thought L and Light were the same person. She also though Ryuk's name was Kira.

Right before leaving for the con my dad asked "Are you going as Denmark?" I cosplay Finland. I thought he should know that because I talked about this cosplay for months.

All of your posts seem to be like elaborate novel titles. It's funny.

On topic with the thread: "Where's my daughter at?" my papa stated once, the day after he saw me crossplay for the first time.

"When Should I Expect grand kids?" Mom when I announced I had a Boyfriend. She kept Hinting for me to have a Child During my Entire Relationship with him.

My mom used to say things like that all the time. Not only was I not dating anyone, I was in high school. I was like "So you want me to be a teen mother?" She eventually quit this.

"When did your room turn into China?"

I have a fair few posters of Korean boy bands on my wall, which never fails to perplex her because she thinks they're all the same. Especially because one group has 13 members in the posters... she can't believe that it's all just one group, haha.

My mom used to tell me "Remember, you don't have to be married to have kids."

Once she told me she was going to disown me because I'm (in her words) "too f*cking altruistic." I thought that was one of the most bizarre things someone has ever said to me.

When my parents say anything about why I'm working on a costume months before I'm going to a con. They think these costumes just come together in a week. No.

When my parents tell me to go shut myself up in my room and work on cosplays.

My grandmother used to tell me this once every few months before she died. She wanted grandchildren from me so badly that she was totally willing to wrest them from my womb with donations from anonymous sperm donors O-o

Poor grandma.

I know I disappointed her... but I'd really rather have kids when I'm financially stable.

Still ~ good advice to keep in mind.

In this day and age, husbands ARE sort of optional :/

I once had a guy ask me out who I didn't care for in any way. He wasn't a bad guy or anything, but I had absolutely no interest in him. So, of course, I turned him down.

Later my mother said I should have accepted, because even if I didn't have any interest in him, 'it would have been good practice'.

Too bad that little children are a pain. I don't think I could ever have kids. I'm sensitive to loud noises and children are notorious for making those. I typically can't be in the same room as a small child for very long.

I know how you feel. I don't like little kids and babies much either, and some of the reason is the sound. I can tolerate them somewhat if they shut the hell up, but I'd never be able to take care of a child myself.

LOL, I'm with you... definitely better to wait until you're ready/stable... My mom always lamented she'd never get grandkids. I was 31 and finishing my PhD when I had my first one, 33 with my second. Then I married their dad and adopted two more. Then I figured out their dad was more work than all the kids and divorced him, then adopted one more.

Now my mom says I have too many kids because I can't afford their college. And I have to remind her that she didn't pay for college for either of her two kids and I got my education just fine (my brother is career Navy). She usually gets quiet and says she has to go after that.

I guess my family is kind of backward... my brother has been happily married 20+ years and chose not to have kids; I'm happily single with 5.

Six weeks before I got married:

"There's something seriously wrong with you, and I'm saying this as your mother. It's like something important inside you is missing, some emotional piece of you isn't there."

Oh, wait....funny things. Let me get back to you on that one.

Oh... I remember one incident with my mom that cracked me up. My mom tends to think she knows what she's talking about when she doesn't sometimes, and her hearing isn't the greatest but she won't admit it... so back when I was married... she, my then husband, and I were in a restaurant and he farted, loud enough that I heard it, but I guess she didn't. He laughed and made a comment that there must be barking spiders around. He was talking quietly enough that pretty much just we could hear it. My mom says, loud enough that probably everyone in the restaurant could hear, "Barking spiders? Where? I haven't seen barking spiders in years, since back when we lived in California and..." Everyone was staring at her and my ex and I were about falling out of our chairs laughing, and she realizes something is not quite right and stops mid-sentence and looks at us. My ex pulled it together to look at her with a straight face and says, "Um, mom... barking spiders are farts!"
Thank goodness she has a sense of humor, and after she turned about 30 shades of red, started laughing with us.

I am 28 male, my mom keeps asking me when and if i will ever get married and have children because she wants Grandbabies. she has even gone as far to say "well i know how much you Love Japanese & Korean" - "maybe i can get you a mail order bride or two?" i was like huh? LOL

when i took my dad to PMX07 for my first Con (D&L) were there when they came in to sit at the (Anime Jungle Booth) my dad asked "those girls are a Japanese Band?" im like NO DAD they are GUYS! his face went red and was like oh,"why do They look like girls then?"

when my mom saw Morning Musume in a PV i showed her a while back my mom said" aww they Look like little Dolls" i asked her "why they looked like dolls" she said "cause they are so tiny and cute" lol

when i played a Morning Musume Song (Rainbow Pink) while i was driving my mom somewhere she Busted up Laughing - i said"why are you laughing"? she said "these 5 year olds sound so cute" she would NOT stop laughing for bout 10 Minutes (Seriously) They are Not 5 they are OLDer then 5.

this is not from my parents but from a really Good loooong time friend of 22 years. he is not into Con's or cosplay or anything except cars really. but anyways - i decided to show him what Cosplay looks like and my collection i had so when i showed him 2 of them he was like wow thats cool, not to bad. then when i showed him my Crossplay (without puting it on) he was like HUH? you wear a dress? I tried and tried to explain it to him. but he wouldnt listen he kept says weird things. so now every now and again when we go hang out he will ask me "aww your not going to wear your dress for me while we go hang out?" i just tell him to SHUT UP. he does not offend me cause ive known him soo long but STILL...

Here's a conversation that I had with my host-mother from when I was staying in Japan:

"Will you marry a Japanese boy one day?
"Uhh. . . I don't know. . ."
*Get's excited* "I know this really cute boy! You can be his girlfriend!"
". . ."

/Conversation.
She asked it completely out of the blue and was completely serious, but I didn't have the heart to tell her that I have no attraction to Japanese boys at all.
Though it was awkward at the time, I can look back on it and laugh now. . . Then she emails me again and asks me if I want to meet up with this "handsome young man". :/

On another note, I apologise if this post sounded rude or offensive at all as that was certainly not my intention.

Unlike you guys, my mom is in NO HURRY for me to have kids. In fact, she required me to go on Birth Control despite being in a relationship WITH A GIRL.

Srsly mom.

As for funny things... my dad calls me "son" when i crossplay. Love that.

And... my dad has this weird thing where he signs all his text messages to me. Like, ending them in "Daddy" usually. But they sometimes get weird. Like "Daddy Babes" and "Daddy Daddy". Or my favorite, "Daddylicious"

When watching Pokemon many years ago, my dad commented: "They all have those pointy and sharp noses, don't they cut themselves on them?" xD Though to be honest, a lot of anime have pointy noses.

And when shopping for cosplay clothes(for Canada) at a second-hand store:
Mom: "Um... that's a men's jacket?"
Me: "...yes? (Well, he is a guy...)"
Mom: "Well, as long as it fits the cosplay..."

I've referred to the character as "he" and "him" every time, and shown pictures. I though that could maybe be a hint towards the character's gender, but I guess not...

My husband, little girl, and I were supposed to meet my family for dinner one evening. As we walk into the restaurant, my mom stands up to greet us. She then stops, looks at me, and asks, "What kind of makeup are you wearing?"

Me: "I'm not wearing any makeup. Why?"
Mom: "You just look like you're glowing white! Are you sure you're not wearing makeup?"
Me: *sigh* "I'm sure, Mom. I'm not wearing any makeup. I'm just that white..." -.-;

I don't tan very easily during the summer (I'm more prone to getting sunburned), and I refuse to go to a tanning bed. I may try the spray tanning booths this year. I don't want to randomly "glow" again...

So I'm at my friend's place, showing her how to open shirt bind.

Cue her dad walking in on us after we're done, and my friend is putting the shirt on.

Dad: WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING!?
Friend: 8D We're binding!
Dad: WHY!?
Friend: So we can be flat for the costume?
Dad: ..................D:

Then her mom walks in and remarks on how ridiculously flat chested I am. Binding win!

Later, as my friend and I are taking (particularly yaoi) pictures...

Dad: Hey. You know what would be really cool?
Friend and Me: What? 8D
Dad: ...if you would cosplay as GIRLS.

Cue us explaining how yaoi is so much better than straight 8D

"Why do you look like a gay disco rocker from the 70s?"
My dad said this when i came down last night trying on my Allen cosplay.
he also said this about Kadaj and cloud and yazoo and loz when watchign advent children.
Except, he said the 80's that time. he said they'd been upgraded to 80's. ... i woulda just stuck with the 70s.

"Isnt that character a boy?" ... So? (my brother clearly hasn't discovered crossdressing yet.)

"Why are your eyebrows white?... and why the HELL do you look like you've been in a FIST FIGHT???" happened today at school... i was wearing my Allen cosplay the night before, and forgot to wash off my make up. OTL. some of it rubbed off, but it looked like i had cuts on my face and bruises, and then... i forgot to wash the colour off my eyebrows. i went to school with white eyebrows and a 'cut up' face. how attractive that must have been.

I was meeting with a college dean and asked her what she thought would be appropriate to wear, her response, "Wear jeans, and that black lacy thing, it'll look nice but not slutty..*awkward pause*...I mean you know how you get.."

She also loves to joke about how I should marry-or at the very least start dating a good (male) friend who happens to come from an extremely wealthy family, why? "Because someone like you needs a 'provider'" My favorite part, is how she brings this up well my friend is there >.<

oh how she thinks she's funny...

I was watching iCarly with my mom and this is what happened.
Mom: A guy like Spencer would be perfect for you.
Me: Well...I think he's cute, but why Spencer?
Mom: He's artistic, you know, he does cooky things, he's weird like you. I I just think you should be with someone like that.
Me: Okay.

A lot of things they say are pretty funny, but you guys don't know me personally so you wouldn't really get the joke. I figured you guys might enjoy the one I posted though, I tried.

Halfway finishing Seychelles cosplay, i decided to try it on:
Me: How do i look?
Mom: I dont get why you're trying to be Dorothy
I just laughed.
My mom scares me when she thinks high school girls and little children are "too cute". I'm beginning to think she's Spain underneath her motherly self O_o

I had an interesting conversation with my dad too:
Me: What are vital regions? (i knew what it was, i just wanted to test him)
Dad: A piece of land from a country that is very precious and fertile.
Me: *laughs* YES.VERY fertile 8D SO is Florida America's vital regions?
Dad: Weeeeeell... yah.... i think it's fertile enough
I almost died laughing right about here.

When I was still into Ouran High School Host Club, I decided for whatever reason to show my mom. Every now and then, roses/sparkles would pop up behind the characters as per standard anime fare. One of the first things she asked was;
"... Why are there roses everywhere?"
The worst part was, I didn't know how to explain. I hate watching anime with people who don't understand it. It's awkward having to explain some of the things that seem weird to people who aren't used to it. Like random sparkles and roses surrounding bishies. >.>

I'm married, so my mother doesn't have to put up with my anime fandom at all, especially since it occurred late in life for me. :-) But she can say some pretty funny things. Even though she's been in this country since she was 13 (she's Polish, so the question I often get is where her accent is from) and her English is fairly good, she still sometimes gets her English phrases mixed up.

1) Soon after I told everyone I was pregnant with my son, I'm online talking with my mother. I have a history of depression, so the idea of me having post partum depression was a concern at the time. So as I was talking online with her, she messages me, "Did you ask the doctor about post-mortem depression?" I started cracking up laughing, and typed back, "I think you mean post-partum. Post-mortem would be after I was dead!"

2) I was in a restaurant with my mother and her husband at the time, and me and my husband. The waitress, who was just lovably flaky to begin with that night, was taking all of our orders. She came to my mother, who ordered prime rib. The waitress asked her how she wanted it done, and her response was, "Over easy." We paused for a minute, then all four of us couldn't stop laughing. Even the waitress was like, "I never heard THAT one before!" When she came to my husband, who ordered a steak, he jokingly told her he wanted it "boiled."

"I like boning!" -Mom, referring to corset boning.

"Gabbi, does 'otaku' mean gayness?"
"No, mom, that's 'yaoi'."

"When you first bought that Bioshock game, I thought it would be a lovely game about men that live in a nice little retro house underwater. Then I walked in to find you beating up that nice acrobat with a wrench! Why would you do that? He wasn't hurting anybody! I want you to go to counseling. If you would harm such a sweet little acrobat, you need professional help."
-Mom. Spider splicers. Enough said.

"Do we really need a wig, or can I just dye my hair pink?"
-Mom, upon my suggestion that she cosplays as Marluxia from KH:ReCOM

At her request, I explained "that's what she said" to my mother. Then she attempted to use it: "SHE SAID THAT!!!"

Can you tell how awesome my mother is? XD

Got a package in the mail; my parents know I mostly import nerdy things.

Dad: "Is that something Sheldon [from Big Bang Theory] would want?"

I opened it; it was Figma Black Gold Saw (http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=FIG-MOE-2241&template=default/product/e_display.html). I set it up later and pointed it out to my mom.

Mom: "You're not going to be wearing booty shorts like that, are you?" I think she was afraid I was going to make that costume LOL

Mom comes to visit and I'm in the bedroom putting my boots on so we can all go out to dinner. She wanders into the bedroom and looks at the artwork hanging above the bed.

"Tigress, what's that?"
"Hmm?" (Looking down as I lace up my boots.)
"That new one hanging on the right."
(Looks up at the pretty picture of Kefka being all creepy and possessive over a doll-like Terra.) "Kefka. I'm cosplaying him this year!" (Big grin.)
"But... but... that's so... I don't even..." (Slowly backs out of the room.) "Whatever makes you happy, dear..."

"You made THAT? By YOURSELF?"

After showing my mom my Eald'narche cosplay. Granted, it wasn't 100% complete yet and I still had a few more pieces to do, but the parts I DID have done impressed her. Mom didn't really have much faith in my sewing abilities (she didn't expect that sort of thing coming from a gamer/nerd/etc, and she could NEVER get me into the sewing room when I was younger even if she tried), so she was pretty surprised to see that XD.

My mom just said a real doozy. She was looking through my room because she thought a pair of pants of hers got into my things. She found my bunny hat and held it upside down. "Do you still wear this?" I said yes and she said "I don't think that would fit over your legs." Apparently, she thought they were tights.

After I told her it was a bunny hat she said "Your bunny doesn't wear hats." (Yes, I have a bunny)

"Erin, I support you one hundred precent in this project."

That happens a lot in my house. I don't even know an Erin, let alone have let one near my house!
And also, when this happens.

I post a few cosplay pics on FB so my mom and dad can see them, and sometimes I get strange comments.

My mom was convinced I'd dyed my hair for Malon, because the wig is a similar color to what my sister is dyeing her hair at the moment. She was very surprised when I told her it was a wig. "I thought it looked a little thicker, but it looked just like your hair style."

Mom also doesn't quite get crossplay. "So this character... is a boy? Why do you want to dress as a boy?"

I have a gallery on FB of future cosplay plans. I took it as a huge compliment when my dad commented on Winry from FMA, "I could totally see you as her!" It made me want to make the costume even more. :)

Oh, I just remembered another funny thing. When I was home visiting over Thanksgiving, my mom gave me this bag of old clothes. "Maybe you'll find something you can use for a costume. Maybe something from that attorney game you like." I knew instantly what she was talking about - there was a women's suit from the 80s or so, black pinstripe vest and pants, white blouse and this huge retro collar. I know what Franziska von Karma's mom dressed like now. Although I did find an old shirt in the bag that was a blue gradient - I kept it and turned it into the apron thingy for Twilight Princess Zelda. :)

My parents came to pick me up at PCC on friday night. They happened to come right when the zombie walk was starting. So we're all piling into the car when a Ghostbuster comes in and starts yelling to "Turn! Run! Save Yourself!" And hands us a flyer on zombies. Im laughing and turn around to see the pack of zombies coming around the corner, but my poor parents had this sort of "O_O'' look on their faces. There were no words, but it was awesome.

My stepfather once picked me and a friend up from seeing Rocky Horror at the theatre. Pratically bounded into the house and said to my mom 'Guess how I just saw people dressed!'. - He had seen a guy in a dinner jacket, bow tie and fishnets and suspenders.

People in my family hardly batted an eyelid when I decided I wanted to try cosplaying but when I told them that the cosplay I'm currently getting commissioned is a princess...

I pretty much have to explain what E3, anime and any genere of video game are to my parents whenever I mention them.

They seem to realise that I start paying attention to some event every year, that I seem to enjoy some sort of cartoon and "The Borderlands" is not the same thing as "2 Fortress" (AKA Team Fortress 2) or "that cartoon thing" (which seems to be a catch all term for any game with manga style graphics) but the rest just disappears after 10 minutes.

Anytime I put on a wig, in costume or not, my brother and Dad both say, "Why can't you just be yourself?"

I'm trying to avoid telling my parents that I'm cosplaying from a show called Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. At least I'm cosplaying as the least dirty-sounding named character, Stocking.

This doesn't exactly apply but it's still funny. When Brittney Karbowski (the voice of Black Star) signed my Soul Eater poster that resides on the inside of my door, she asked, "Can I write 'I will surpass God on here?'" And I said, "Sure," then after she started signing it I said, "Well...my dad's a pastor. He might not like that." She started apologizing profusely but she had already finished so she couldn't take it back. My dad has yet to notice.

Since my parents always ask me to explain who I cosplay as and what the characters do, I had to really sidestep around certain things when it came to Nero from Devil May Cry 4. My parents are like mad crazy conservative religious, but it's not as bad as you think. It's just certain topics really set them off, and the words "devil" and "demon" are the two hot buttons that get them fired up. Problem is, how do you explain Nero without mentioning either word?

Easy... You make stuff up. LoL

As far as my parents are concerned, Dante and Nero run a pizza shop in New Jersey that's located next to a nuclear power plant. Nero's arm got injured in a nuclear accident when he was touring the plant one day. Dante saved him but both were exposed to radiation that allows them their "demon powers." They have the swords to fend off the thugs and idiots who try to steal pizzas or rob the shop. Therefore, Mom and Dad think that Nero and Dante are actually pretty normal, because "People who work at pizza shops can't be that weird." The coats were a little hard to squeeze by, but I said, as shop owners, Nero and Dante can whatever they want, really. So in a nutshell, that's Nero and Dante to my parents. And they've not given me any trouble with Nero. Surprisingly, by misnaming Nero's arm, (Deathbringer) my parents aren't even troubled with that.

To think, I'm having a much easier time with Nero than I had with Cloud. Go figure...

I had to explain E3 to my mum. I was following it through Twitter texts and she kept asking "Why so many messages?". Explaining my extreme flail over Sonic Generations' remake of City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2 was practically impossible. "IT LOOKS SO GOOD, MUM." "..."

Her reaction when I told her I was going to a Sonic convention... man. I'm not gonna live that one down.
