View Full Version : Stuff you collect (or used to) that is quite silly in retrospect.

OCD or not, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of us have silly collections that only have worth to ourselves.

So come on and all, share your stories for the entire lurking crowd of cos.com to see :D

I'll start with my collection, I used to 'collect' videogame movies.

That means, I'd have the console hooked to a VCR and would tape cutscenes and such --- started around the time when voice acting began on the PSX era and amasseda bookshelf worth of VCRs. Went through 2 VCRs (The latest one just conked and refuses to record anything properly, then it refuses to rewind a tape at all now).

Even from games I couldn't give a damn about the story or cutscenes (Final Fantasy X-2 *gag*). In retrospect, it was totally silly and worthless --- I can't quite understand why I've done that for so damned long.

Last year, I only taped from games of the PS2/Gamecube or Wii --- anything that wasn't connected in HD in fact. When the record functio ngave out, I fiddled a few hours to bring it back in working order and gave up. Finishing Persona 4 at the time was more pressing.

...so it's behind me, but the bookshelf of tapes is still here XD

During high school I constructed a foil ball. For two and a half years, I added whatever foil I had in my lunch to the ball. It reached watermelon-sized proportions before I finally got rid of it

When I was a little kid, I used to collect beer caps, which I never bothered to wash before sticking them in the ziploc bag I kept them in. I had over 60 when I realized that this was disgusting lol.

I collect bottles and Victorian medical tools. I recently bought a pair of Victorian-era umbilical cord cutters. I was like, "YAAAAAY!"

Beanie Babies! I must have spent all my allowance for a year on those darn things.

I also collected salt shakers, which I still kind of like having.

I still think my rock/gem, lab equipment, and record collections are pretty ballin'. Especially the records, as my father and I built a collection of some rare stuff by John Denver and many other artists.

Back in the day though, I remember hanging on to incredibly useless stuff like pogs, Creepy Crawlers, and free AOL diskettes and CDs. I made crafts out of the diskettes and stuck the CDs to my walls. In retrospect, those all seem pretty ridiculous.

Trading cards. Jurassic Park I got the most of back then. Then I saw the movie which I didn't like much, I actually thought it was a bore. I guess I don't really care much for dinosaurs. If I was to watch it again I'd probably appreciate the movie more as an adult though.

I used to also collect anime promo trailers by ripping them off DVD or recording from VHS via video input on the PC's graphics card. For when people asked me "whats this anime like?" then just show them the trailer. Useless to do now with YouTube in existence.

When I was little I would collect gel pens.~
Now a days I collect Gloomy Bears. ^-^ When ever I go to a con, or somewhere new and they have Gloomy Bears for sale I always get one to add to my little family.~

I still have a few running around my book shelves. I love them but I'm thinking of just donating them. Though I still have that voice in my head saying "You spent how much for these??"

Now I just collect yarn (I'm a crochet fiend) and make an array of stuff such as pillows (one with Kirby for my friend who love playing him on Smash Bros.). Other than that I collect books. Half Priced Books is going to be the end of me I swear! ><

O-o;

In chronological order:
-Care Bears
-Fischer Price Little People (I even had Sesame Street)
-My Little Ponies
-Ranger Rick magazines
-horses
-unicorns
-stickers
-panini stickers (in the albums)
-carosel stuff
-Star Trek figures
-Star Trek cards
-Star Trek everything
-Magic the Gathering cards
-bad fantasy novels
-otters
-Disney stuff
-random anime swag
-bad Visual Kei cds
-La Cryma Christi band stuff
-band flyers
-omamori
-Kaworu figures (ongoing, still pointless)
-catgirl toys (ongoing, still pointless)
-every postcard I've ever gotten or possessed (ongoing, mostly pointless)

At the end of every significant phase of collecting, there is a massive ebay purge. I have been lucky. Generally speaking my habits have been cheap to feed and have resold well... making it all the harder to resist falling into another silly collector's hole.

Ribbons... They are kinda useful for cosplay but I started collecting them when I was like 7? I love ribbons XD I just got a new yellow one yesterday. My bf gave me a gift and it was on it.

Pogs, yugioh stickers, clippings from magazines of 'Anime's I want to watch but I don't know how to get them other than paying for DVD's', and stuffed animals (still do this though....).

For crossplaying and being called a guy a lot, man I'm such a girl. ...Ribbons and stuffed animals.. *sigh* so lucky people at school are not gonna find out lol

'Antique' tea cup and saucers -- not like hundreds of dollar ones but ones you find at yard sales and dusty antique stores. On hold due to living in another country. (My grandmother used to collect milk pitchers. We're all set for tea time!)

Doujinshi -- ongoing. My wallet weeps. T_T

Marvel comics -- ceased after the early 2000's, when the storylines went pllllbbbbbt

Penguins -- semi-on-going

Alice in Wonderland stuffs -- on-going

Poetry

Perfume oils

The rest of the stuff I don't so much collect as it collects on it's own into a big, junky pile ala that room in the Labyrinth. >_< I be a packrat.

Kingdom Hearts stuff. 8D It's the newest one as of... three, maybe four years ago? O_o

And belts, scarves and little dolphin things. The dolphin things I've been collecting since I was 5, though most of my things have gotten broken over the years. ;__; Makes me so sad.

Hmm, use to collect:

Pokeman cards (no longer)
Pogs (no longer)

That's all I can really think of right now. It's late...tired. I don't really collect anything anymore.

Used to collect: (not in any particular order)
Pogs
Marbles
YuGiOh cards (to this day I still have idea how to play that damn game)
McDonalds mini barbies
Beanie Babies
Teeny Beanies
Sea Shells (kinda still do this)
Plasic Spoons (we used to smuggle them from the cafeteria, my locker was full of them)

Currently Collecting:
Bottles that catch my attention
Those little "blind box" figurines (I get one every con)
Plushies
Gold Dollar coins (I have like 20 of them, I tend to forget they're money)
Children's books (this isnt useless, I'm going to teach pre-k)
Cat Ears (the hard plastic kind. I have like 5 pair)
Pennies
Shiny things that catch my eye

I used to collect Pokemon cards. I stopped somewhere around the Neo 3? Neo 4? series.

I still collect the non-TCG cards for some series I like when I can find them - mostly Mario Kart Wii, New SMB, and Zelda: Twilight Princess. I haven't finished out any of the sets, but I'm close on a few of them. I wish the cards weren't so hard to find. I was lucky enough to find some packs of the Zelda cards for a dollar each in a bin at Target. (There wouldn't happen to be anyone out there on this thread who collects as well and wants to trade? ^^)

When I was younger, I would collect any Mario series items I could find, usually at flea markets and thrift stores. And everyone I knew would get me Mario items, too. The problem is that now, Mario has become popular again and there is too much to collect it all. So I have to be more selective with my collection (and I think some of what I have will be going off to Ebay-land). I'll definitely hang on to certain characters and the older things (because the character designs were so different and interesting).

I do try to collect an action figure or doll of every character I cosplay. Sadly, a few of them are way beyond my price range and crazy rare. I saw a picture online of some adorable Lunar keychains that alas, I will never be able to afford.

Pogs.

And especially, slammers.

Oh Pogs...man that was a fast fad. I must have been the only kid who would play those long after the popularity died out. lol

I use to collect those umbrella party picks whenever I saw one. I had over 100 at one point. I really have no idea why I kept them. I ended up turning them into a mobile to hang in my room. Wish I had pictures. It was an awesome mobile.

Now I collect video game systems and pre-CD games. I'm sure some people would think that's odd.

What I collect and used to collect? Oh man..a lot...

Collecting in the past..

PoKeMon Cards This was back in Middle school. I would buy and collect cards and go to the local Toys R Us every weekend for a Pokemon card battle. It was so much fun! Though now I no longer collect them but they're still in good condition! Well I hope so...they are in a bin, in a bin, in a collapsed shed (the snowfall this year made it collapse).

YuGiOh Cards Same as PoKemon cards.... :)

Beanie Babies! So they were very much fun to collect...yea x3

Collecting now...

Convention Pins (or at least for Anime Boston) Every year for Anime Boston I buy a convention pin to remember which year I went :) I will continue doing it for any convention that sells the pins~

Convention Badges I lost my first ever convention badge ;-; Now i make sure that I remember them!

Parasols I've learned to love these beautiful umbrellas. Currently I only have a red, white and blue asian styled and a long base small coverage (if that makes sense) black one :)

I did not sell them. I don't think they were ever actually worth all that much, despite what those collector book things used to say. Maybe they will come back into style when we're 40 and I can sell them then. Right now they are heaped in a bag in the basement.

- Stuffed animals in general, including Beanie Babies. I've probably got at least 90 if you include my 40+ Beanie Babies. I've loved animals since I was a child so it's really easy for me to get attached to cute fuzzy things, inanimate or otherwise. I've got a lot of cats, rabbits and birds.

- Images. It's not a physical collection, but I hoard images from the Internet and never seem to use them for anything. Presently my "pictures" folder is 27.5 GB and 99,407 files. These are mostly gifs, icons, animal photos, my own photographs, and fandom-related images.

- LOTR-related posters and newspaper clippings. Between 2001 and 2004 I used to cut out any magazine or newspaper articles or images related to the LOTR films as they were being released and would tape them to my wall. I practically wallpapered the largest wall of my room at one point.

- Artbooks. Thankfully I haven't gotten hugely into these yet but I spent about $150 on three artbooks off eBay last fall.

- Figmas. They're small, poseable Japanese figurines which typically come with a wide variety of accessories that are interchangeable with various figures within the same line. I own 14 now, most of which were bought last year, but I've slowed down a lot and only have one preorder left for now.

- My dog's whiskers. When he was alive, I found them on the floor around the house and would keep them. I'm not sure why I would do this, but now that he's passed away, they're sort of like mementos.

- "Special" Canadian coins - in 1999 and 2000 there was a new quarter every month with a different commemorative image, and there were also loonies and toonies (our one and two-dollar coins) with images commemorating the country's history (e.g. war veterans, aboriginals, etc.). I probably have at least $25 in these things, but I stopped keeping them about a decade ago because they've made so many different ones since then.

- Foreign money (other than American money since we can actually use American change here, for the most part). I love seeing how coins and bills vary in different countries around the world. My favourite is a five-Franc coin. It's huge! There's also some kind of penny with a scalloped edge; I think it's from the Bahamas but I don't have it on hand to check.

Now, there are things I used to collect consciously. The only things that come to mind are tabs from soda cans (I don't know if that was a trend in high school for anyone else), stickers and sticker books when I was in grade school, and dolls. Not, like, the creepy porcelain dolls or anything. I had a bunch of "collector" Barbies and action figure-type toys. What a waste of money and space.

Then there are things I don't consciously collect, but tend to pile up anyway: perfume, makeup, ribbon, handbags, shoes, greeting cards, old copies of Martha Stewart Living magazine.

Oh, and cake stands. You bake one frigging nice cake, everyone you know gives you a cake stand every Christmas.

doxiequeen1
03-07-2011, 09:58 AM
Stuffed animals- I had a queen sized trundle full of these things. Thankfully a few years ago I got rid of half of them, it's lame, but I have so many good childhood memories of them to get rid of them all. But the collecting has stopped.

YuGiOh! cards- I collected these when I was..7?..8? I spent so much money on those stupid things :x Thankfully the collection is GONE.

Those are the really stupid wasteful ones. These are the ongoing ones..

Stamps - I have a pretty amazing collection, it was passed down to me through my father. I add to it from time to time, but not religiously. I suppose it's silly, but atleast I don't spend huge amounts of money on it.

Markers- I actually don't consider this one silly...I just have a MASSIVE amount of them. And I've only been collecting them for a year....But I use them on a daily basis.

Now all my money goes to cosplay and my collections have been halted xD

I also used to have a small Pog collection. I tried to collect pop can tabs in high school but didn't drink a whole lot, so I just had a small handful before giving up. I tried collecting the state quarters but was broke one day so I spent them.

For a long time I was collecting the castle lego sets. I had all the sets lined up on my shelf, collecting dust. When it came time to move out, I realized space was going to be an issue so I only kept a few sets and eventually narrowed it down to just the black knight from the joust set.

I collect the occasional anime/game figure and used to do plushies but decided to stop collecting the plushies as they just take up too much space.

Dinosaurs, and beanie babies.
I had over 1000 beanie babies that about 950 are now in other homes. (Goodwilled that shit. But had to keep my favorites. >>')
Dinosaurs were when I was really little. I just loved those guys. I owned books, action figures, stuffed animals, movies, everything was dinosaur.
Pokemon cards too, I have a done of those suckers.
Now I collect my convention badges. I don't really collect anything else since I'm too lazy.

Pokemon cards Got a nice big binder full on them! never played the game though XD Just liked the cards....I really need to get rid of them =_=

Yu-Gi-Oh cards Also have a fan amount of those...(of course my Pokemon binder beats them handsdown) Tried playing the game, but just liked collecting the cards better

Beanie Babies used to have a LOT of them, sadly, none would get me anything from collectors. I played with them too much as a child, and most of them no longer had tags (I apparently used to think they were "hurting" them so I cut them off....stupid child me!)

I collected stickers, marbles, cards like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, books, folders, gel pens, pencils, and color pencils. I collects a lot of things and STILL have them. I have 2 horse folders from elementery school and more. I also had issuses using the pens because it was to werid to have the ink so low and the ink was pretty and I could not waste them. Still collecting things. My sister has pens, pencils, markers. We have them in rubberbands the size of oatmeal containers right now. And they are sitting in a cabinet where the mirror is. hehe

I collected keychains in middle school & high school. I still really love them and my bags tend to go a bit overboard with them, but lately I've managed to keep it to one or two keychains and that's it. In school you could hear my bag jingling from the other side of campus, I swear.

Now I collect bottlecaps. It's only silly when it gets to the point that I'll only want a drink if it has a new cap I don't have. But, as I mentioned in another thread, I've tried out so many great new drinks because of this side hobby!

Those really bothered me as a kid.

My gf and I recently watched (tried to, anyway) the movie.

A decade that allows a movie like that to exist, is a decade that needs to be put to death.

-As a kid I was obsessed with She-Ra. I had soooo much She-Ra stuff. To this day I'm only missing three of the figures to complete the collection.
-The X-Files
-Batman

Current Collections:
-Wicked or Wizard of Oz stuff.
-things based on Neil Gaiman's works (Sandman and Coraline mostly)
-Shoes. (holy crap I love shoes. I have around 70 pair including my cosplay shoes)

I also tend to accumulate unintentional collections. As in, if my family realizes I'm into something they'll buy me anything they think relates to it for birthdays and holidays even if it...doesn't..
They find out I like anime..oh hey, let's get you "Japanese" stuff. And I say Japanese in quotations because some of my family doesn't exactly research this stuff. It's why I'm the proud owner of a florecent orange "kimono". (which I lovingly refer to as my "hunting kimono") It's hilariously adorable and I love all of it. ^_^

Oh God, I always seem to be collecting something.

Beanie Babies and Pokemon cards were my main ones when I was a kid. :B But I think my mom threw away all of my Pokemon cards cause she thinks Pokemon were created by Satan or something. T_T Dude, I had some awesome cards... They'd totally be worth something by now.

I collected Sonic the Hedgehog stuff for a few years too; figures, comics, games, posters, tons of crap. Now I'm trying to get rid of/sell most of it. xD Might put up an ad on the marketplace soon or something. It was a pretty cool collection though lol.

Now I primarily collect manga and anime figures. xD They're addicting! I have over 200 volumes of manga and a small but good bunch of anime figures. Good Smile Company makes the best stuff. <3

Oh, and I also have a mini-collection of Alphonse Elric phone charms (well, I also have quite a few plushies and figures of him too but that's not creepy right? lmao </fangirl>). xD He's so cute! I have 7 right now, and they seem to weigh more than my actual phone does. My phone can't technically have charms though, so I basically took off the back of my phone and put the cord in that way and put the back of my phone back on. but eventually the charm collection grew and got to be so heavy that I busted the back of my phone. rofl. So I bought a phone case and attached them to that... Funny, now my phone case is broken. xD

In Cadmium: FOR SHIZZZZZ omg I still have my Pogs... my treasured "7 1/2 Ball" (get it? Not an 8 Ball?? lol so cheesy XD) slammer... my uptight Catholic School banned pogs from the grounds because it was a "form of gambling." So what did we do? Played marbles. Yes, MARBLES. Which, if you play for keeps, is ALSO a form of gambling... but they had no problem with that of course.

I still collect lots of things that I DON'T find useless (X-Files memorabilia, anime figurines, my huge hard drive full of cute animal photos lol), but in the spirit of the thread's "quite silly in retrospect" title, I'll have to go with stickers.

I was a sticker FIEND in grade school. Sticker trading was all the rage. People would have these sparkly ones, holographic, bubbly, etc... those were worth like 5-10 regular stickers! Luckily, my Ant met a guy she dated for a while who did graphic design for a STICKER FACTORY! He used to give me whole rolls of stickers, and even printed up about 2000 transparent stickers with my name on them for me, which I thought was just about the most rad thing ever.

I wonder what happened to all my old sticker books...

Miniature tea sets, My Little Pony, Sanrio (especially Spottie Dottie and Little Twin Stars), and the American Girls books and magazine starting from the first issue. It'd be nice if Mom had kept all of them, they're probably worth something today... I also collected the entire series of the X-Files on VHS, as well as anything related to the show I could get my hands on.

Now I collect vintage kimono and accessories.

Wait, WHAT?! Fellow X-Philes on the cosplay forum!!! You and Miyabi too! Hurrah!! I have ssoooo much XF stuff. The fandom is VERY much alive today! And full of nerdy girls! It's great! Visit biglight.com sometime! or XFN! Oh the fun we have... I'm good friends with some folks who run charity events that they manage to get the XF folks to attend... I've met Chris Carter, Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Nick Lea, Dean Haglund, Mitch Pileggi, and tons of writers/producers/directors who worked on the show.

I also have 2 XF related tattoos... no joke.

If you guys ever feel like you want to get rid of your XF stuff, I know a big fan that would very gladly accept your donations >_> *coughthatwouldbemecough* I fact, not to get off-topic, but if you seriously want to sell any of it, I or any of my XF friends would probably happily purchase!

I used to collect stuffed animals like crazy. They were the only things I would play with when I was little. (I also had like thirty or more barbies and one ken, but they creeped me out) I now collect t-shirts related to my favorite fandoms. Sounds kinda weird, but when I see one I gotta have it, which is why I avoid going to places like hot topic and the disney store.

I used to collect:

-snapple caps
-pez dispensers
-plastic utensils (with subtly different designs)
-sets of toys released from macdonalds/burger king (if i liked them)
-pokemon cards
-movie tickets
-playbills

I was an only child so I had to amuse myself somehow ^_^; wasn't so amusing for my parents wallets, however. Lol. Nowadays I'm not as sentimental, I don't really collect anything!

Oooh! Neat story..my 3-D design professor used to be bff's with Gillian's (ex?) husband who was an artist. @Miyabi- and KamiNeko317: Aah, high school...I was sooo into the show during my middle and high school years. It was my obsession before I really discovered anime. (So many sunflower seeds consumed because of that show ^^)
I still have all my tapes and magazines and the seasonal guide books in a box somewhere. I'm not quite as into the fandom anymore, but I'll always love the show. I idolized Scully back in the day...I thought she was so cool, I wanted to be just like her.

Ahem, other stuff I collect. Manga, of course. My collection's around 325 at last count, haven't bought any in a while due to financial constraints, but I've lent it all to Sakura Con a few times to supplement their manga library. Ended up making up around half of what they had, I think, including what the convention itself owns.

I also collect bento boxes and accessories. Fabric and wigs, naturally (bins of both). For reasons related to cosplaying, extra long dowels and PVC piping. Fan art, though the series I like are hard to find at conventions. And Detective Conan and Ranma 1/2 merchandise.

I also collect large Lupin the 3rd figures, particularly Fujiko, not too many but I look for them whenever I go to cons.
I'd like to collect more large anime figures. I have an excellent Miroku, Lum, and a beautiful Escaflowne statue, and I've been hankering after more of the really nice Inuyasha series for a few years now. I really want a nice Kagome.

- Old/foreign/interesting coins I come across, (ongoing)
- Flowers received [dried, of course], (ongoing)

-Random Figurines. Recently discovered that I had Ed-kun figure.
-Anime disks.
-MANGA!! Currently over 112 but ran out of bookspace. Waiting till I get my new to-ceiling bookshelf.
-For some reason, Magic: The Gathering cards. A nearby store sells them 2 cents each. They are quite pretty picture wise. On a random note, I am quite proud of my JP card and my card illustrated by the guy who did the pictures for Spiderwick books. BTW, that movies terrible.

EDIT:

Those really bothered me as a kid.

My gf and I recently watched (tried to, anyway) the movie.

A decade that allows a movie like that to exist, is a decade that needs to be put to death.

I cant fathom why people talk of the 80's with any hint of fondness in their voice.

I literally. LITERALLY JUST GOT DONE WATCHING THAT MOVIE. The whole thing. I mean, who would have thought the Garbage Pail Kids were talented craftsmen and sewed clothes for a fashion line? (This is the entire plot of the movie. Not a subplot.) Why does my life keep coming back to cosplay?

Stuffed animals, stuffed animals, and stuffed animals. :c It is a serious problem. I've been collecting them for as long as I can remember. I think it all started because all of my family members would give me stuffed bunnies for my birthday. Those started to pile up, and I just loved sleeping with them all. I used to be real big into collecting toys AND playing with them. Now I only grab figures I think are really cool. I collect swords kind of. I had a bunch of fantasy ones and "useful" ones that weren't all that great. Then I started getting some pretty serious steel and got rid of the old stuff. I have an actual Zulu spear (my dad got it for me from Africa), Paul Chen's rendition of Musashi's Katana, a Ninja-to, two very well used Nunchucks, 2 pairs of Tonfa, a Daodao, a damascus steel dagger that was supposed to be my wakizashi for my Katana in kendo but they sent me the wrong item BUT I kept it because it was the more expensive item and I figured I'd want the matching set for my Paul Chen blade.

I'm sure there are people here with more blades then me or just weapons in general but I like my gear and although it's an expensive hobby I always look for a new claymore to replace my wallace one.

- Pokemon cards
- Unicorns (figurines, plushies, posters, artwork, jewelry, etc)
- Model horses (mostly Grand Champions, a few Breyers, and some random ones people gifted me)
- My Little Ponies
- Crazy Bones
- Calico Kittens (they were these collectible little kitten figurine things, kinda like Precious Moments)

Things I collect now:
- BJDs (Ball-jointed dolls, you see lots of people call them dollfies) They're soooo expensive but I <3 them
- Buttons (I've got a really fun collection of random buttons that I know I'll never do anything with because they're hardly ever in sets)
- Convention art, especially art of characters I cosplay as (stuff I buy from people in artists' alley. some fan art, some original stuff, you know... I like to support the starving artists)

Ahh! Dollfies! X3 You know, I used to think they were the weirdest, creepiest things ever. Then one of my best "online" friends showed me his collection (I think he has 5, he just got the Saber Lily dollfie, rich bastard >=O). After that I was hooked. I ended up getting a Mai Shiranui dollfie (only 700 at the time) since I couldn't find a blank body and Volks didn't have any available at the time. I wanted to make an OC out of it, but now that I think about it, my OC didn't have a chest that big, so I'm starting over and reverting Mai back to her original state after I get blank body.

At the moment, its just a lot of Dollfie clothing I've been getting. Mostly of dresses and nun habits. I plan to have a photo op with said best friend sometime in the future with his dollfie that has a Shinto Maiden's uniform.

Also an addition to my previous post here:

Swords.

I used to collect them a lot when I was younger, pricing from $60 to $600. Now that I look back, and think "Man, what a waste of money". They're now just a pile of metal in the corner of my old bedroom. The only ones I'm willing to keep is the set I got for graduation and my grandmother's.

What I should probably stop collecting.

Figures. I have so much its ridiculous and all they do is just stand there, posing and collecting dust. Sure, I fiddle around with them and pose them again once in a while, but that's about it. I probably should get rid of the ones I'm not a rabid fan of though. Oh well!
