Okay, so most of us have that character that we absolutely hate and everyone else seems to love. For me, it's Tifa from FF7.I just started playing FF7, (I have an issue where I get into popular things ten years after they were popular, but I already know what happens and I saw Advent Children so yeah.) and I really cannot stand her. EDIT: okay, I realize that my argument of why I hate Tifa was really stupid... In any case, I don't hate her because she had huge boobs. I hate her because she seems to me like the kind of character that's only purpose is to be admired and loved by the fanbase, and not really be of any other importance, like Mikuru from Haruhi Suzumiya and that chick from Chobits who dated Hideki whose I name I can't remember at the moment. I think that if you take away Tifas looks, people wouldn't like her anymore.
What makes me hate her even more is that shes so clingy of Cloud, but when it comes to telling him how she feels NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I don't understand how people like her. Well I understand how a lot of guys like her. But girls like her too! I don't understand! :lost:

So yeah. Tell us about that character you hate that everyone else loves! It doesn't neccesarily have to be a video game/ manga/ anime character. :toothy:
By the way, thanks for responding to this thread! It makes me feel creative in a way, even if a lot of the response is just to me being stupid.

That's all feminism needs, hating on chicks for having a big rack.
Anyways i neither liked nor disliked that character.

I don't tend to have massively strong feelings towards most characters.

I don't hate any characters, although I'm not particularly fond of Misty. I just dislike her at times. I don't have full-blown rants about why, she just sometimes irks me. /shrug

I don't really have a character i hate; more like a character that i dislike. I dislike just the typical "tsundere-type A," characters but i already put that in another thread. Also i find it really really hard to "Hate" anime, manga , or game characters.

Off topic V V

Umm what does breast size have anything to do with being a feminist? There are feminist out there that have larger breast size than that game character. Also; just putting it out there, but it is possible to have a large cup size and still have a pretty fit body Myself and younger family members that are proof of that.

Back on topic V V

Why people like tifa; i have no clue, i haven't played ff7 so i can't really criticize the character, however i'm sure a lot of people like her because they can perhaps relate to her or they just like her model design as a character or perhaps the many moves she can do. Who knows everyone has their own opinions, yes? Wither you like her or not is up to you.

I find weak female characters annoying, like Rukia and Orihime from Bleach... but not everyone loves them, which pleases me.

... is Misty weak ass?

I never hated her, nor have I loved her, so yeah xD

But the character I hate the most is Sakura Haruno from Naruto. BUT EVERYONE LOVES HER!. Sakura's such a b☆☆☆h! I mean, she always talking down to everyone, when she can bearly defend herself in a fight. She's also not a good friend, I mean come on, who stops being friends with someone just cus thet like the same guy? Not to mention she thinks Sasuke is a god, and she feels the need to treat Naruto like dirt cus everyone else does. Well she and Naruto do become friends, but yeah v.v

Like everyone, I don't really have a huge opinion on a character unless I'm OBSESSED with the series. (*cough*Kuroshitsuji*cough*) The only characters I really dislike (don't hate them with all my being, mind you) are Claude (Kuroshitsuji II) and Prussia (Hetalia).
Claude is pretty hated throughout the whole fanbase, with a few exceptions. [If you want proof, there's a fanfiction titled 'Ways to Kill Claude Faustus'...or something along those lines.] So that doesn't really count.
Prussia is loved and hated, depending on who you ask, though loved seems to be the majority. I just don't get it. I like the characters that pop up randomly, but...Meh. That's all I ever felt about Prussia; 'Meh' and 'shut up'. =/

I hate your font.

On Sakura, I felt she was a poorly designed character at first, however when they did that whole time skip thing, she suddenly became pretty powerful and was able to kick some serious ass, and heal people. This pleased me. She also stopped her obsessive love of Sasuke (shes more confused over his motives then anything) and seems to have some feelings towards Naruto, however conflicted they might be.

I like it when characters grow.

Good, I WANT you to hate it ♡

Lady Tsunade made Sakura change. . .Lady Tsunade's Ninja Boot Camp C:
Yes, Sakura does get better in Shippuden. But the time Shippuden came to the US, I lost motivation to continue Naruto. Eventho I do watch an episode or two every few weeks.

A character I hate equally to Sakura is probably Amy Rose from the Sonic franchise. She reminds too much of Pre-Shippuden Sakura =/

Speaking of character change, Reese from Zoids: Guardian Force. Started as a really strong character, but after Hiltz tried to kill her she changed drastically. She wasn't a villain anymore, and that made her into a Fiona reject. I bearly remember her during that mostly cus she kept so quiet. She became meek and followed Raven everywhere.

I was pretty disappointed since I liked Reese the Blue Devil, she was a tough chick at first. I didn't see many strong female characters in the Classic Zoids, other than Moonbay and Viola.

But Raven also became more of a wimp when he decided to be a good guy =/

I remember this from Boyfriends dad, after watching a week of Naruto:

"They've been on this damn bridge the whole week fighting. I am waiting for them to get off the bridge"

And that sums up Naruto for me pretty well.

Yeah, I feel almost the same about Claude. Now, when I've had a lot of sugar and am on a fangirl rampage, I HATE him. But he isn't as bad as he could be. I haven't read any of that fanfiction in a while, either. I still don't like him though. =/ (He's just...annoying...and puts way too much obvious fanservice out there. With Grell it's hilarious. With him it's blech.)

Same here. My friend (who wants to cosplay Prussia) will just come up to me on a rant on how (s)he is awesome. Yelling in my face. Seriously. That's ruined Prussia for me, and it isn't that far off the mark.

Well, as far as Final Fantasy goes, Quistis from FF8. I don't HATE her, but I think she's creepy and immature and everyone seems to love her. @_@

I mean, if a male teacher said things along the lines of "I'll fail you if you don't go out with me" to a female student he'd be a pervert, but because Quistis is a lady it's hot, and Squall is a big meanie for rejecting her? He was probably creeped out by his teacher constantly coming on to him. I know I would be. Doesn't matter if they're close enough in age, that's just wrong to try and manipulate a student like that. She gets FIRED for it. Don't see the appeal.

Personally I really liked Tifa. I liked that they made her a hand-to-hand fighter.. usually girl characters are mages or thieves, so it was nice to see a girl who could kick ass.

I dunno. I can't really think of too many characters I really hated..

So far Tifa is the only FF character that isn't a mandatory healer (IE: If you don't use her, you DIE) that made it in my primary team in any FF so far.

FF13 should change that, whenever I get up to that point.

Which is a big reason I tend to favor non-main female characters (ie. Selphie, Rikku, Meru from Legend of Dragoon.. etc). They aren't expected to be healers, and even though they are support characters, they all have high agility and are very fast, so if you can boost their strength and defence they kick major butt XD I've always been better with agile, fast characters in any game, so having all the ladies as mandatory healers or wimpy staff users really bugs me :/

When it came to Bleach, it wasn't Orihime I had a problem with, 'cause she's just like a real high school girl with the exception of a few things and scenes.

However... Grimmjow... I don't even know why I don't like him... but I don't...

In Naruto, I don't exactly hate him so to say, but I definitely can't take him seriously as a major villain, Kabuto. EVERY time I think, hear, read, or say "Kabuto", I immediately think of a cute little rolly-poly Pokemon in place of the fearful ninja, making him... not very fearful XD

...you know, I just dislike Organization XIII entirely. Pretty much the only redeeming qualities of KH2, for me, included the gameplay, the fact that you still got to play as Sora (unlike any of the recent games), and the fact that (SPOILER) the whole organization bites it at the end.

I'm guessing a lot of this is based on personal opinion (Well, *any* type of view involving X being better than Y is).

I always found Legend of Dragoon kinda silly (And yeah, I finished it). Not really for the storyline, which was decent.

It had a little more to do with the dance battle theme and GUST OF WIND D-D-DANCE (IE: God-awful voice acting, admitedly, with performances like in Grandia back then, there wasn't a lot to go on, but still -- the voice-work outside of the FMVs was surprisingly sub-par. Though nowhere the level of Chaos Wars or Baten Kaitos)!

Nits, picking and all that.

I don't really get comparing what used to be called 'PC RPGs' (Now western RPGs and even that is a fallacy with Gothic in the picture) to what used to be called 'Console RPGs' (JRPGs nowadays, I'm in sure I can find reasons to call that moniker a fallacy too).

They're entirely different styles (Mainly on the linear story-telling bit).

Also, Planescape Torment will always hold a special place in my heart.

(PS: I love Persona, I know you're gonna like that statement :p)

I was so disappointed in Death Note. Interesting premise, to be sure, but it was destroyed because the main characters were ridiculously unwatchable.

I hated the vast majority of the cast of Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

I don't know if they're universally loved by the rest of the world, but I feel it needed to be said. Part of me felt increasingly crazier with each passing 'humorous' (AND UNSKIPPABLE) cutscene.

Same thing could be said about the mains of Infinite Undiscovery.

A lot of the storytelling/cutscene designs of those games were strangely similar, like the same doofuses worked on both titles.

i second that faize and lymle<--however you spell her name were annoying side characters; the only one i "truely" felt sorry for was the cyborg, and edge, what can i say about someone who feels bad about destroying a parallel type earth.

Bacchus and Myura (Whatever her name is, the only female character on the cast that didn't have a fail comedy moment every 5 minutes of cutscene) were the sole exceptions to this hate.

I would put Lymle, Meracle, Welch, Sarah, Faize, Edge with Mack & Cooke (Lost Odyssey) in an airlock and release them in the vaccum of space.

I don't so much hate them as totally don't understand what's to like about Orginization XIII. Axel and Roxas have their moments but I'm sick of every KH meet up or disscussion being overly saturated with them. I played 365/2 days to try and find the appeal, but nadda.

I also find it wierd as a Disney fan that I can't really find any love for Snow White. Yeah she's the first princess, but I don't get the appeal. I think it might be her voice that gets on my nerves. *shrugs*

My Japanese male friends all find something quite lovely and charming about Ami from Toradora. But while I love the show to bits, I can't bring myself to find a single speck of redeemability in that self-absorbed, pity-mongering bully (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucQ7Z7W6ViQ). I always thought she was a character designed to be hated... so I'm not sure why everyone loves her so much O-o;

But I hate people like Ami in real life. Her personality type is my ~kyptonite~... and yet, a lot of people seem to like those people too.

Oh, and Cloud is a boring Gary Stu... just like all of the Final Fantasy heroes up to 10, at which point they spontaneously developed at least framework personalities and fanboys, in turn, immediately started bitching about how annoying they were and had to watch genuine characters win the hearts of the hot, wilting princesses that ought to rightfully belong to them.

I don't really... ever hate characters. They don't bother me. Seeing character hate makes me sad. Like one cosplayer who was hating on my friend, since she was cosplaying a character they hated. Its just... negative emotion you don't need.

Now, I do have to admit. I have hated one character. Though its less of a hate for the character, and more of a hate for the fact people pair her up with someone she obviously has no chance with. Liechtenstein in Hetalia.

Because she's got this horrific big brother complex with Switzerland, and its nasty. Since every time she touches him, he thinks of Austria... yet people STILL pair them. I can't understand why. Seriously.

Case and point, episode 25:

Liechtenstein: Still, I get sad thinking about how I don't get to see you that much. I miss these times.
Switzerland: There's more important business I have to attend to now.
Liechtenstein: I know, you've got better things to do than sit with me. I've always liked that you work so hard at your career. But I don't see why you can't relax more often. I get worried about you sometimes, big brother. *leans over and touches his hand*
Switzerland: *flinches a little, blushes... smiles... then thinks of a time when he and Austria used to hold hands like that* ... *gets angry* Gah! Why can't I get that stupid Austria out of my head!? *puts bucket on head and starts banging on it*
Liechtenstein: Big brother!?

Obviously. He still has feelings for Austria :I Stupid Liechtenstein. GTFO.

I hate Near from Death Note with a passion.
The thought of him pisses me off, and I just want to punch him in the face.
I also never understood why Matt got so much love. He was around for like... a minute.

I hate Winry from FMA. She's always pissed me off, and always will. Idk why, she's not that terrible, but I just... don't like her.

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but all of Hetalia in general...

^In retrospect this is unfair, but I will leave it in case anyone needs to unload on someone. Although it does amuse me how Aryan looking America is...

If I really had to hate on someone it'd be Touru from Fruits Basket...I do not appreciate heroines with double digit IQs

There's a separate thread for anime you hate. This is for characters. If you hate every last character in hetalia, then MAN, you've watched a lot of it XD;; Considering how many there are. (And no offense, but posting that here instead with an intro like that is sorta asking for it)

There are very few characters that are in series that I honestly hate. I hold a strong dislike for some, but not many make it to the point of me hating them. However, I would never bash on a cosplayer thats in costume of one of the characters I don't like. I've actually talked to a lot of them and they're pretty awesome. Then I ask why they like the character and so on and so forth.

List:
Sakura - Naruto (One of the few I honestly hate in the younger episodes. I still didn't like her when she was older either. Shes annoying, rude, immature, clingy and just a royal pain in the ass. I can't stand her or how she talks. Makes me twitch.)

Near - Death Note (Don't ask me why. I just can't stand him.
SPOILER:
once L dies in the series, there really is no point to it.
Just saying.)

Kairi - Kingdom Hearts (Just one of those things where you start with a series and just don't like the character and can't figure out why. Shes cute and I like her outfit but don't like her personally.)

Edward Cullen - Twilight ('nough said?)

Ahhh, I could keep going on and on and picking one character out of every series. XD Its pretty bad haha. But i figure I should stop now.

Off topic - My little sister LOVES Hetalia. xD I need to watch it to understand what everybody is talking about haha

Personally, FF9 will always have a soft spot for me in terms of characters.

One of the few games where I didn't actually outright dislike a lot of the characters. (After FF6 anyway, I really enjoyed 4 and 6 in my youth for some reason and still regard them fondly)

With the exception of Zidane, my dislike of the FF mains has kept going strong from FF7 and up with Tidus & Yuna. At least Vaan was a character of ever-diminishing importance in the story of FF12.

I'm hoping Lightning isn't the female version of either.

I too love 9 best. It's adorable, fluffily designed, and visually original in a way none of the others really have been. It felt like a small, self-containted world that I'd like to visit inhabited by people I'd like to hang out with. It gave feminism a token nod and it's best shot yet at a heroine who wasn't just arm-candy (even Lightning is undermined in her strength by the undeniable fetishism thrown into her design). When I turned on the game I was happy to be back and when it ended, I was sad to go. That said, I couldn't summarize the plot in a coherent and interesting way for you... I haven't played it in 7 years and I've forgotten what the whole adventure was about aside from a few haircuts and card games. Which is in part because Zidane wasn't so much a character as he was a character type with a cute design. Silent protaganists suffer from... well... silence. Why no one bothered recording voice tracks for Playstation games when the platform was perfectly capable of delivering them (see "Black Matrix") is beyond me. Discs don't cost that much money.... and the games are already on 3 or 4... throw them on 6 and give me dialogue.

As for 10 onward -- I said they had personalities :P I didn't say they had good ones. But, for me, characters' are much more compelling to follow when they have clear motivations, emotions, and minds of their own.

Video games still have a long way to go in crafting compelling, well-rounded characters of any gender or genre :/ It happens once in awhile, but so infrequently that it almost seems like a happy accident.

That much is true, I recently (IE: Last week) replayed FF9 and rediscovered why I liked Steiner, Beatrix and Vivi so dang much.

And Vivi is still a dang cute take on a black mage.

Silent protagonists are even worse in this era of cutscenes --- the Suikoden series having suffered from this a lot. Strangely, I really liked the ones in the later Persona games even if they don't say anything really.

I,m thinking talent and the market wasn't all that present for games voice-overs of the time, the 'large successes' of them was verey niche. I'll readily admit liking Grandia, Lunar and the like -- even if the voice-work is very amateru-ish VS today's standards.

RIP WOrking Designs, in with Aksys & XSeed :D

Point taken and agreed upon.

Stories in games have become much more interesting to me when they stopped having so many cardboard cutouts for characters. It will never be perfect, but it's improving.

EDIT: You added this part when I was typing my reply, it echoes my last thoughts on the matter XD

Ok... were to start... I can sense waves of hatred coming towards me when I say this but...

AERIS

God I hated Aeris. Maybe it is not even her fault. When I played FFVII I was like "meh, another girl with a cutey-I-am-somehow-important-though-useless profile." Then she died, and there is still people who has not gotten over it. SHE'S BEING DEAD FOR YEARS AND NO PHOENIX DOWN WILL CHANGE THAT, OK? Thanks. ^^

That being said, in general, there are two types of characters that I get to hate:

1. The main character that always wins just because he's the main character:

- Pikachu (he must be freaking level 9000 already)
- Seiya (yeah don't worry dude, everyone else got beater to death so you could be the hero)
- Naruto (when I saw him defeat Kiba just by farting, I knew I was done with that anime)

2. The clumsy, cutey girl that is somehow important to the story but she's totally useless:

- Again, Aeris.
- Yuna (her annoying voice didn't help to the case either)
- Esther on Trinity Blood

... I'm pretty sure I could come up with more names if I think it over. I'll make sure to come back here whenever I need to vent! :D

Oh god Vivi was like my first fictional crush lol. I played FF9 when I was still in my "boys suck and have cooties" stage and felt so conflicted inside that my favorite character in the game was a boy.

Speaking of underrated games, Xenogears. Xenogears and Xenosaga. I don't care if the cutscenes go on forever, or that both projects ended up rushed toward the end because of funding... I still love those games. I like them more than FF, as a whole. Great stories, even though Shion and Fei were aggravating at times.

Everyone from 'Twilight'.
This.

Other than the characters from Twilight, the only other characters I've really come to dislike are Haruhi and Mikuru from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya. Mikuru was so weak willed, it got to the point I'm rather annoyed every time I saw her cry. Or just simply see her face. >.> Haruhi was the exact opposite of Mikuru, and yet, she was still a terrible character. Haruhi bothers me because she's very much a Mary Sue, and her personality... it was god awful. I don't know how anyone could like her, but to each their own.

I usually don't watch a series long enough to really hate a character, though. If they bother me too much, I'm likely to drop the series all together.

Vivi can suck my ASS.

Hell, 95% of FF IX's cast can jump off a bridge, especially Vivi and Beatrix.

Zidane: "waahhhh I don't know where I'm from"
Garnet: "wahhhh it's all my fault"
Vivi: "wahhh EVERYTHING EVER"
Steiner: "wahhh I'm incompetent"
Freya: "wahhhh my boyfriend is missing"
Quina: "HUNGRY"
Eiko: "wahhh I want to be an adult"
Amarant: "wahhh WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOOOOOR"
Beatrix: "wahhh I didn't use my conscious soon enough"
Kuja: "wahhh I'm going to die"

I can deal with being sad, but jesus everyone in IX just whines like bitches from disc 1 to disc 4. At least Cyan had a GOOD reason to be sad, and he didn't mope the entire game, he hid it well.

Ginny Weasley. She barely gets a role until the 6th book and she's all of a sudden perfect. Harry is head over heels for her just because she grew up to be pretty and it doesn't really get any deeper than that. She is in all 7 books but the reader doesn't really get to learn much more about her than her looks and who she is related to. Conversely, Luna who is only in 3 books is well fleshed out.

I am so annoyed by Ariel. She was never my favorite Disney character as a child, but now that I'm an adult, I find myself cheering for Ursula. :3

Back when I watched Pokemon, I hated, hated, hated Ash's Pikachu. The level 10,000 Pikachu who uses electricity on ground-types and wins. And I hated Ash too. Speaking of which...
TRACEY. Tracey was the first character I hated with a passion. I wasn't a huge Brock fan, but when he was replaced with that bandanna-wearing loser I was furious. "I'm gonna make a sketch of this!" "Ohhhhh Professor Oak~~~" And his annoying half-dead Scyther. Just hated him so much and I can't even fathom why.

On the topic of RPGs that are underrated, no love for Lunar? I have never finished a Final Fantasy title because of all the angst (although I am enjoying 9 and really liking the characters,), but I loved the characters in Lunar (Silver Star Story, never played the sequel). Kyle the smartass womanizing drunk was one of my favorites, along with his sometimes lover, the butt-kicking healer Jessica (the first character I've found who was as good a fighter as a healer, made it tough to decide how to use her in battle). And snarky, adorable Nall. Really, I loved everyone except for that douchebag Nash, but that's to be expected.

I think the OP was mad about a female lead needing big boobs to compensate for character qualities that wouldn't immediately make her likeable to the majority audience playing that game. In other words, a character design decision tailored to the presumed gaming community for that game before it even came out. I really doubt the OP REALLY equates big boobs to anti-feminism, but it makes sense to be mad at someone who purposefully designs a character to look that way.

ANYWAY, I'll never understand fangirls of Matt from Death Note. Seriously, at best he deserves a modest golf clap for his five minutes of being nothing more than helpful to a character that actually mattered.

Wow, you are SO RIGHT! I guess I never thought much past her generally chipper attitude and the fact I was hypnotized by her hair and the fact she's a mermaid... but dang, that girl is a ditzy brat.

Isn't there a sequel movie where she has a kid? I can't even imagine her being responsible enough to be a mother. "Change a diaper, what? Yep.

Besides my hate for the constant heroine that does nothing but heal, and her whacks with a staff are something a child could do, (Yes. I'm looking at you Final Fantasy.) I actually really don't like Katara from Avatar. Okay... I didn't like her at the beginning, I did grow to like her as the series went on... but the first season, I wanted to deck her. But she rounded out more and she became one of my favorites... so I guess I can't count her.

Any anime/video game character that basically is helpless for the most part of the series (i.e- Kagome from Inuyasha) and has to rely on EVERYONE to protect her, so of course the bad guy ALWAYS goes after them... It just drives me insane. Especially when they just stand there and scream as they get kidnapped. Seriously? Get a large stick and whack the guy in the family jewels. Don't just stand there and whine.

And the two Disney princesses I never liked were Snow White + Ariel >.> They didn't DO anything... Bleh.

Twilight: I'm sorry but I just dont get why everyone likes it

Sai from Peach Girl: OH MY GOD, if there was ever a time where I wished I could reach my arm though the computer screen and choke the life out of someone it's got to be her. I mean who is that jealous and manipulative, I hated her. She put Momo through so much it made me actually cry (No lie).

Zero Vampire knight: So I bought the first season of VK and though I was enjoying the show I just was a lil annoyed by Zero, i dont know why but to me he just seems like that cliched character that's Hellbent on revenge like a certain someone else "Cough Sasuke Cough*. Maybe theres a requirement to have such a character in some anime series :/

Sakura Naruto: Most of what I want to say has already been stated. But let me add on I just dont care for her because I want Naruto and Hinata to be together & she's getting in the way of that XD lol

Haruhi: Yes the dance is fun & the song is catchy but underneath it all lies a HUGE B*tch and that is exactly what Haruhi is, I mean she bosses everyone around, she sexually harasses Mikuru and has the power to destroy the universe, I dont think I could handle begin round someone like that

There are plenty more characters I can name but for the sake of not taking up a huge post I'll post more later ^_^

Generally I felt like adding Ginny in last minute was kind of haphazard. I didn't MIND it or anything. But the build up to her and Harry was so minimal. Going from like..one event in book...2 or 3 or something where she gets him a singing valentines day 'card' to just being a kind of background character with no real connection to Harry.

Speaking of Harry.
He's kind of a douche.

Everyone from Naruto. I just hate. that. series. That ^

Speaking of Harry Potter - Cho Chang. Christ she was annoying, though I think she was more noticeably more aggravating in the books than the movies.

Wolverine - I never understood why he was so popular. He seems very 2-dimensional and awfully boring.

Trinity & Neo - Well, I'm pretty sure there is a strong following of hate for these two, or maybe that's just my feeling. I should just put Keanu Reeves here instead. I hate him more...I want to punch him in his "I-use-the-same-expression-for-every-emotion-and-somehow-get-acting-jobs" face.

OH OH! I'll second this! I've had a few friends that were so proud to get Slytherin House in one of those stupid quizzes because of him. I just shook my head and sighed, there's no way they would make it in that house and I'm certain Snape would have no interest in them.

I used to hate Sora from kingdom Hearts.
just because I think he should have been more responsible in watching over Kairi in KH2 and respecting the wishes of Riku who asked him to take care of her at the end of the first game,
Most of Kairi's encounters with danger in KH2 are thwarted by Riku, Sora does little to protect her in that game, even when he is standing right next to her.
I just never really saw what was so great about him and hes not a really solid character and does not develop AT ALL in KH2 (but thats not really his fault)
and I dono he was just kinda an ass. like when Kairi asks to go with him to hollow bastion he responds
"you would get in the way"
and you don't really get this attitude from most of square's main characters, usually they just bring the girl along and do their best to protect them (she obviously isn't completely useless or Sora would still be a heartless)

Ive mostly gotten over it though, he is not so bad, a sweet guy with good intentions and a strong heart. But I still like Riku better, I just..... respect Sora now and always stick up for him when people claim TAV are all way better than him

They reminded me of every single person from 10th grade I ever wanted to back hand.

She has alot of boys like her (i dont think she deserves one of them)
she gets four eggs (kinda of a spoiler sorry)
and people thinks she so cool.. She can't even decided really who she wants to be and so
i guess it also comes that she doesn't really listen and use her brain

then again, i am a Tadase fan (not fangirl, but i do like him) and i just get tired of her hurting him and coming back all sorry and all...

I never was a fan of Amu (shugo chara)

I actually think Amu's a pretty good role model for a little girl... until she gets those godamnned eggs with dreadful gender-role magic packed inside of them. That whole show has a pretty abhorrant message and reflects everything that's wrong with Japan and the women raised there.

Let's run down the list:
----------------------
-Women can be "anything they want to be!" Ie: bitches, elegant traditionalists, housewives, cooks, flight-attendents, artists, perpetual-babies, idol singers, actresses, library-girls, and cheerleaders...

-It's perfectly acceptable for a 5th grader to date a high school student.

-...who seems to be trying to hurt her and her friends.

-Wait... why is a 5th grader dating?!?!

-5th graders wear skirts that fall mid-thigh and a host of other fashion inappropriate for children of any age

-The boys who treat you nicely are good to string along as safety nets, but you should really go for the criminally-minded, dangerous one.

-Fashion and appearance > personality

-Male attention is the peak of feminine aspiration

-You will become popular for being pretty and fashionable, regaurdless of whether you work hard or not. Pretty, fashionable people fail... but everyone immediately forgives them.

-Girls, be nice to gay boys and crossdressers: you can cure them!!!

Oh, Shugo Kyara! You had so much potential to do something positive to challenge gender roles and a relatively strong heroine with which to do it. Why did you have to stab a generation of little Japanese girls in the ovaries?!?! Ah well ~ it could be worse... look at Pretty Cure *gouges out own eyes*

Though I have to defend Amu for one thing -- she can't commit to a stereotype and often her discontent seems to be a result of finding them all ridiculously limiting. Everyone else seems all too happy to embrace the downright awful destinies handed to them in easter-egg form. Could easter eggs = the Japanese establishment?! *dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn*

Think on it for a moment... you are given an egg and out pops a tiny annoying person with an obsessive-compulsive 2-dimensional personality and fantasy occupation and are told "this is who you are and everything you'll always be"... I would shoot myself. Twice.

It makes me feel creative in a way, even if a lot of the response is just to me being stupid.

lol. That made me giggle.

Back when FF7 was first released EVERYONE loved Aeris/Aerith. There was no interest in Tifa or Yuffie. It was all about the flower girl, whom I disliked. Immensely. I was the only one that I knew for the longest time that was on the Tifa bandwagon. Somehow over the years, that's flipped. I don't know when or how it happened, but it did. I'm guessing after FF7:AC. Character interest comes and goes in cycles. *shrugs* I'm still a Tifa fan *pokes username* but I was one wayyyyyyyyyy way way way way before it became a fad to like her. So if you don't like her, that's fine. ^^ It just made me giggle that the opposite was true for such a long time. XD

Well, as far as Final Fantasy goes, Quistis from FF8. I don't HATE her, but I think she's creepy and immature and everyone seems to love her. @_@

Very similar to the Tifa argument. When FF8 came out, everyone loved, and still does, Rinoa. No Quitsy love when I was on the bandwagon. Even when I cosplayed her just last year. But now she's coming into style. People confuse me. lol

I always thought Rinoa was kind of spoiled, clingy little brat.

Though from Square, it comes as little surprise.

Cloud & Aeris?
Squall & Rinoa?
Tidus & Yuna?

I'm seeing a theme... (Purposefully leaving out FF9 and FF12 since the entire romance thing didn't seem as focused in those titles)

I don't quite understand why is everyone calling games that directly relate to the story spin-offs. The only true spinoff of the KH is Re:Coded, but that game was originally for cellphones, so no big surprise there. 358/2 Days does explain what happened to Roxas between KH1 and KH2. Bith By Sleep explains why Roxas looks nothing like Sora, expands on what is a keyblade, as well as introduces a new trio of characters. Re:Chain of Memories explains what happened in the gap between KH1 and KH2 to all the characters besides Roxas.

Without Organization there would be no antagonists except for Ansem and Disney Villians. Plus they aren't strictly evil. Just wish to exist fully because they are but remnants of their original selves. Which makes for an interesting motivation.

There is a difference between needlesly milking the franchise and expanding on the world the games are portraying.

/end rant

On topic: Kaname from VK. He only cares for himself really, Yuuki just happens to be 'part of his plan'. He treats everyone else like dirt, and that's not a sign of a good character.

Harry is a total douche.
But I disagree about Ginny. See, I loved her from the first book, where she has like one line. And I went through my books as a kid and highlighted every scene she was in. And there is some foreshadowing early on that she's a cool girl. For example, her brothers continuously mention that she does not act shy and quiet when Harry isn't around. They talk about it a lot. Even if the fifth book, she starts to get more fleshed out and actually dates someone.
I agree that the romance between her and Harry wasn't very well written (especially because she grows as a character BECAUSE she's no longer interested in Harry), but I thought she was a good character overall, even if she was pushed to the background.

And I hated Ash too.

This^

I remember back when I used to watch pokemon, and before anyone says im a nostalgic fag (which I wouldn't care anyway) is that back then, I remember Ash used to be cool. He was like this kid who just started to train and even tho he lost, he wouldn't quit. Plus the whole comedy was funny and all. But after the seasons started to change, his attitude really stank. It was like from "Im going to try my best" and actually win battles to "I'm so great Noone can beat me attitude" and lose constantly. From that point on, i stop watching pokemon except the times I get to see Piplup buts that a different story.

I don't hate Ash but I do find his attitude to be irksome. And his lack of development throughout the entire series is annoying too... mind you, that's the same with almost every character. You'd think after so long, if he doesn't age then at least he learns some things along the way? But apparently not seeing as he makes the same stupid mistakes he did at the start of the journey and his attitude is pretty much the same as back in season one. I still like him because I'm one of those people who cannot bring themselves to hate him but he's a really unlikeable character.

If you put in that way, yeah I can't really hate Ash but I agree with you there, the lack of development shows. The same applies with Gary, tho at least he still doing a better job in then Ash. Least by then, he'll know not to use Pikachu against Electivire.

To be fair to Gary, he probably shows the most character development of any Pokémon character, simply because he stops being a douche. Yeah, within the first few seasons he spends his time harassing Ash but he's the first to actually make a step into becoming friends with him, when Eevee defeats Pikachu and he actually compliments Ash. But the rival element still remains, even after they actually become friends and Gary quits being a trainer. And yeah, it does bug me a little that Gary was the ultimate troll and now he's all... decent but it would have gotten a little boring going to every region and having Gary leaving little bullying notes for Ash on sign posts.

But in a series that has been going on for so long and yet has little development, Gary is the only one who really breaks this mould as he changes not only as a person but as a trainer (and later into a researcher). It's just that we don't physically see his personality changing, as he changed when Ash was skipping around the Orange Archipelago. He's probably got the most interesting story as well but that's just me, my imagination likes to run wild with his ~tragic~ past.

And another thing that I like Gary for above Ash: he actually understands the rules of Pokémon, vis á vis the whole type advantage thing. Like he uses Blastoise versus Charizard, although somehow Ash's Charizard wins because of course it would, despite Blastoise probably being a higher level and having been with Gary longer. Ash and his stupid logic defying Pokémon.

Apologies if I rambled a bit there, haha. No prizes for guessing who my ultimate bias is.

This... is exactly how I feel. I don't hate many characters from anything but oh my gods, I friggin' hate HATE HATE Pikachu. Annoying rat that can somehow whoop everything, even types that would destroy electric types.

As for Tracey, I won't even get started there. I still don't know what in the hell was he ever good for.

Ash got on my nerves. "Hey, look it's Team Rocket doing absolutely nothing! Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt!!"

Lightning, boring and typical. They took the worst parts of Squall and Cloud and shoved them into a pink haired female. I'll never understand why some many people love her.. but then again, most of us are girls, and to have some hard headed super girl AND cutesy pink hair! It's like throwing meat to a pack of wolves. I suppose she progressed, but I'd stop caring about reviving her in battle by then.

Also, I can't stomach any of the cliche KH characters. I'll take my Disney mice in grandpa shorts up to their chest, black and white, not helping out emotionally undeveloped teenagers in grim reaper coats wielding giant pin wheels and keys. Though, I don't discriminate anyone who loves them! I mean I liked Seymour in ffx, and loads of people have told me just..."why would you like a creepy rapist man child?" well.. "why would you like a bull headed summoner with a personalty of a rock turned gun wielding pop star?" :p I never take offense or any of it seriously though, our opinions and personalities are what make us who we are, plus I didn't create any of these characters.

Oh mannn you so made me remember my hate for Lightning. I have tried so hard to give that game a chance, I just can't. Most of the characters are obviously previous characters thrown together. I think Vanille annoys me more because at first she has no accent and then it's extremely thick out of nowhere. She just wants to be Riku but she can't because she doesn't suck at fighting like her. I need to stop coming in here. I like Snow though..kinda hard for me to hate a Square Enix guy. ><!

I'm a guy, just started FF13 and I must say Lightning is one of their better female characters from where I stand.

Then again, I find myself liking most of the cast from the get-go, that's pretty rare.

All depends on personal taste I suppose.

I think FFXIII's problem is that for most people, it works the opposite way.

I found myself immediately disinterested in and irked by the characters and story... and by the time I found myself liking nearly all of them and giving a snot about what happened to them, there were only about 10 hours left in the game >.<

I guess that's a valid way to write a story... but if you don't want to play the first 30 hours of the game, it's hard to plug through on the promise that it gets a lot better in the last 10. I ~hated~ Hope for 20 hours... then he became my favorite.

I still think Snow, Sera and Vanilla are cheap stock characters with cheap stock-stories, though. At least the other characters' faults were part of the story and their growth.

13 isn't a bad story... it's just not a particularly good game.
Because it isn't fun :( It's tedious.

I like Lightning, she punches Snow. Yay. (but Hope was my favorite, too.) It's mostly because she's a leading female without some thrown-in romantic interest or any sudden "my stoicism was only a frooont!! I'm secretly weak and helpless and kawaii, save me" or "my coolness is a flaw and no one will want to marry me if I'm like this, so I'm going to work hard and learn how to be domestic by the epilogue" BS. (especially since those characters are totally feminine enough, geez ><)

The latter is the one kind of personality twist I absolutely cannot stomach and I feel like I see it too often... It's like they made their personality do a 180' specifically because losers find truly cool girls intimidating. I don't even mind if they give her the most fetishy design in the world (I like certain eye candy too), so long as her personality isn't compromised halfway through the story.

The whole cool + sensitive thing is only really great with characters like Hana no Saint-Just, or Juri Arisugawa... but it's presented in a totally different way for a different reason. Them being messed up isn't a twist and it isn't done to make them cute. ie. because they're from yuri series *cough*

<stuff>

On my end, I absolutly love the chemistry between each character in FF13, it just seems more interesting to follow (And better delivered) than in previous installments of that series --- and the main not being like Tidus or Vaan is a huge bonus for me.

I'm not a big fan of Hope either --- but FF13 plays it pretty good by not making him a focus to the scenes all the time like FF usually likes doing with distraught characters.

It might be due to my expectations being lower for an FF game, or that I've been playing the old ones in my list and with one exception, it wasn't all that good an experience.

Maybe you gain better appreciation by playing through a bunch of crap beforehand? :spinner:

I mean, Saionji from Utena constantly smacks around Anthy, and I like him. And I like Anthy too. :P

edit: Actually thinking about it, it really shouldn't be a big deal at all, if it's not a big deal for girls to beat up guys.
You almost never see guys hitting girls in fiction that isn't a "omg abuuuuse!! this guy is a jerk!" situation, or a "this girl is nuts, she's coming at me with a knife saying we should commit lover's suicide and I have to defend myself" situation.
If the guy and girl are supposed to be equally strong, it doesn't make a difference who hits who. (sure violence is wrong and all, but this is about fiction.)

My dad loves the Twilight series @_@; Every time I've tried to point out how creepy (and poorly written) the books are, he completely overlooks it. I mean, it's canon that Edward is a stalker! He greased Bella's windows so they would be silent when he sneaked into her room at night! This is our generation's iconic, ideal relationship that "every girl wants"? wtffff.

I know for example Anne Rice wrote some weird crap back in the day, but it was never portrayed as ideal romance or marketed toward young girls. I think that's what bothers me the most, Bella and Edward glamorize and perpetuate some reeeeally bad stuff, while still being "kid friendly".

The first thing that kills Twilight, is the sad attempt at a Shakespearian-Rice romance. The second thing, is the glitter. I'm sorry. Does 100+ SPF for Vampires only come with glitter?

Then it becomes like a pig in a mud puddle with the poor writing, sad attempts at description, painfully agonizing dramatic or bland-as-white-bread characters. In my opinion, Twilight is nothing more than a really. Really. REALLY. Bad fanfiction.

I'm gonna have to agree. I liked her much better in Brotherhood than the first series. All she did in the first series was cry and make automail. She and a lot of other female characters existed for the sole purpose of being protagonist cheerleaders.

Let's redefine "everyone" as "everyone who's played a game that's 20 years old".

You know who I really, REALLY can't stand? Celes Chere, the fan-darling of Final Fantasy 6. Celes, you're a fucking general. Not just A GENERAL, the TOP GENERAL. TOTALLY EFFECTIVE MILITARY BADASS. What do you do once you become a PC? YOU SWOON AROUND. You pine and hover. All for this shnargly little pickpocket bozo who was lucky enough to be the first male PC you saw. Your crowning plot-moment involves PUTTING ON A PRETTY DRESS, SINGING, AND GETTING KIDNAPPED.

What.

Oh, and your special ultra-technique, the one that you get instead of badass weapon strikes or hand-to-hand kickbuttness, or a stunning array of magical puissance for free? The one that sucks up magical effects from enemies (Yay! Celes sucked up Meteor! Oh wait no she didn't, that's not actually a magical attack somehow)? ALSO SUCKS UP BENEFICIAL EFFECTS CAST BY PARTY MEMBERS. Consistent theme: sucking. BEST IDEA EVER, HOW DID YOUR ARMY EVER NOT GET BLOWN UP EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF EVERY DAY.

Fuck your writers, General Celes Chere, and fuck you for being written by them. Fuuuuuck.

^ Actually, I agree with that. Everyone LOVES Celes and completely overlooks that once she joins your team she gets more and more emotionally weak to the point where she gives up and jumps off a cliff, even though it's an avoidable scene

I don't hate her, but she is definitely overrated and misrepresented. Her development takes a downward turn, while Terra, who's considered the 'weak' one, gets stronger as she develops. People like judging characters based on first impressions.

Throwing out an old-school one. Natalya from Goldeneye. I swear she was programmed with a chip in her head that said "whatever you do, ignore all aspects of self-preservation." What an annoying habit of dying she had. And if she wasn't dying, she was yelling at you about killing Boris or anyone she knew. Ugh. Hated her.

Ugh she was annoying when you have to protect her from all those bullets in Control. Luckily I was amused when I rescue her and kill her at the same time giving myself a completed mission. XD

Rory, from the new season of Doctor Who.
And yes, I am also a DrAmy shipper. But that's not why I hate him.
Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen the most recent season.

He's useless.
Completely and totally USELESS.
When he got the gun in his little plastic robo-hand, I was freakin' EXCITED. Because you know what? If he stopped being so damn useless, I wouldn't have hated him.
But then the universe got rebooted and he lost it, and married my favorite character.
Every time he's on screen he's either being a load or making Pond miserable! He's either slowing them down (and making her significantly less bubbly and interesting) or he's dead and making her miserable.
The two-parter where he died is my favorite two-parter of this season, my favorite episode is the Van Gogh episode. The Van Gogh episode because it was really good and HE WAS GONE, and the lizard-people two-parter because HE GOT HIS ASS SHOT AND EATEN BY A TIME CRACK.
I freaking cheered. At five in the morning. It was how my mother discovered that I had stayed up all night to watch the new season, AND IT WAS FREAKING WORTH IT.

My now ex-boyfriend loved him to death. A few friends of mine love him too. I just want him to die and freaking STAY DEAD THIS TIME.

Honestly, I didn't mind him as a concept. Sure, he was in the way of my ship, but I know that realistically, my ship isn't happening (and I'm fine with that. My rage goes towards Watanuki/Domeki denials). And, honestly, he just needs to GTFO the Tardis. He doesn't belong there, he's just being a weight and screwing things up for everyone. I would make Pond miserable to have him gone. I love Pond.
God I hope she shoots him next season. That horrified look on her face (and general lack of his face) gives me SO much hope.

Yes. She's the annoying one that nags you about not taking care of your horse.

Ah yes, the one under bestiality watch, I bet she would of ended up on one of those Brazilian zoo girl sites if she was real.

Not anime, but I can't stand Littlefoot from The Land Before Time (the movie in general is a giant clusterfuck of things that piss me off. Yes, I do mean the first one *is shot*), Tommy and Susie from Rugrats, and Simba from The Lion King. Even as a kid I never liked those characters for some reason (though I obsessed over Scar from TLK from age five or so to seven). Yet to many people they're some of the most beloved characters/films from their childhood. Always been a weirdo I suppose.

Also, Beowulf from the literary classic of the same name. Yes, the work has tremendous cultural significance, but I swear to god as a character Beowulf is little more than Ye Olde Sonic Gokuverine. When we read it in lit I couldn't unthink that we were just reading the 2000 year old version of some preteen boys' Gary-Stu fanfic.

Me, I liked Auron mostly because of the home movies you find in the course of your adventures--the ones where he and Braska and Shirtless Jecht are just hanging around bro-ing it up. That moved me.

But lemme get back to the hating: Garrus, in Mass Effect (1 & 2). I just can. not. give. a damn. Okay, he's all principled and upright. Okay, then he's all hard and bitter. Sure. It's all well-written but his arc just completely falls flat for me, and everybody else seems to be OMG I LOVE HIM DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN DATE HIM and I am all....what. This is the guy who yells "Hold the line!" in a fight. NOBODY HAS HELD THE LINE SINCE NAPOLEONIC BATTLE FORMATIONS FELL OUT OF FASHION. I also hate him because he's the designated Nice Alien Boyfriend instead of my delicious Solarian doctor, Morden. It's okay if your species doesn't marry, Morden, we can just have no-strings sex all the time. BUT NOOOOOO.

I personally liked Garrus, and thought singing Morden was hilarious. I was sad that you couldn't have a romance line with Morden, but Thane made up for that XDD That game irritated me because you couldn't continue your romance with Kaiden if you were a female. WTF? I spent 10 hours in ME1 MAKING THAT! Don't take it away!!!!! 0.0

I don't know how much of a fanbase she has, but Misa-Misa from Death Note. I hate her. 0.o She's whiny, immature, obsessive to the point of creepy and a general pain in the butt. That being said, as the story progressed, I grew to like her more and now I medium disapprove of her but when it began she was like Sakura from Naruto... And on that subject! Nanael from Queen's Blade. I'd like to stuff her good wing in her mouth to stop her from whining all the time!!!!

Which reminds me, I'm not terribly fond of Char Aznable. 2/3 of the UC Gundam fandom thinks he's God incarnate, but honestly I don't like the guy. This is actually why I didn't mention her. I just thought she was universally hated. o.O

Actually, on that note. Zelda.
Specifically Twilight Princess Zelda. If she was cool earlier, more power to her. I haven't played any of the old games because I'm bad.

And, admittedly, I'm biased because her light-arrow-shooting AI sucks. I JUST WANT TO BE DONE WITH THAT STUPID HORSE PART SO I CAN GET TO THE REAL FIGHT KTHXBAI. (Admittedly, the 'real fight' was a little less than stellar, but I didn't know that at the time.)
But even beyond that, she just...seems like a twat. I mean, I can actually understand the situation where twilight took over. But I feel like Spoilers Midna went through a lot worse and she didn't spend nearly as much time bitching. She got off her ass and actually DID something. End spoilers.

I don't hate a lot of characters...mostly because they are just fictional, but...

Mamori from Eyeshield 21- She was quite clingy with Sena, and just downright annoying in my eyes. I really don't like the fact that everyone pairs her up with Hiruma. I mean, he is just too cool for her.

Amelia from Slayers- She had her moments where she was awesome, but I got tired of her screaming "JUSTICE!" at the top of her lungs. Lina wasn't that great either.

Sasuke from Naruto- People have already said it numerous times. He's a power-hungry brat. I wouldn't call him emo, but I would call him dramatic.

On a seperate note, I never cared for Rossiu (Gurren Lagann), but his forehead amazes me.

Lelouch and Kaname.

Lelouch. What a douchebag. He's all "I'm changing the world for the better for Nunally!" and then goes off and kills his own family and friends, starts a giant war, and betrays everyone who ever cared for him. Yeah. I'm sure Nunally loved that you massacred people and killed yourself for her. The Zero Requiem doesn't even come close to redeeming him, since about half the hate and conflict in the world was caused by Lelouch in the first place! For such a brilliant strategist, you'd think he'd be smart enough to come up with a plan to dethrone his father that didn't involve the deaths of thousands of mostly innocent people, but no, he was too selfish masquerading as the "savior" of the people to do that. I could go on for a long time, but I'll stop here.

I didn't list it above, but I also hate the Britannia Army, who never seem to think of guarding any of their super advanced prototype robots with more than just a few men, so they always end up being stolen by the Black Knights.

And then the character I hate most is Kaname Kuran. He acts like Edward Cullen with all his undying love for Yuuki, but he's a crazy control freak and just shits on people who get in his way of making Yuuki his undying love slave. And he gets away with it too, because he's a pureblood vamp (aka born a special snowflake). Not to mention that pureblood vampires in VK are like, impossible to kill, so basically Kaname is a self-absorbed, unkillable pretty boy vamp that walks around manipulating people so he can keep Yuuki to himself while other characters have to sit and take it because he's got an "I can do anything and get away with it badge."

It makes me sad to see so many women predictably hating almost exclusively on female characters in anime/manga fandom.

Either 1) Japan has trouble creating convincing female characters who are likeable to real women.

or

2) Most of us have stereotypical envy/bitch issues.

I'm guessing it's a combination :(

... but why does everyone think he's so freakin' great?

Isn't that the entire joke behind Kuroshitsuji?

That Sebastian is perfect and can do everything perfectly in such a badass way as to leave the audience fainting in awe?

I mean... he can take out an army of thugs with a set of silverware, stop a speeding train, successfully solve a murder mystery while simultaneously framing someone else, come back to life after being grotesquely murdered, do complicated acrobatics with no training, and do any household task much better than Martha Stewart ever dreamed...

Oh, and he apparently invented curry pan.

The last is sufficient enough reason to dislike him, I suppose. Those deep-fried hunks of tepid curry-ooze are pretty gross.

noctiluca
04-15-2011, 07:44 PM
I have to say Japan does a way better job making likable female characters than America/other western countries do, even though it's not perfect. They still have the problem of ruining cool/tough female characters when they're given a love interest, where her personality gets toned down to fit into the heterocentric dominant-male relationship. I'd like to see more examples where it stays the same, or at least evens out.

Which leads to the point #3) There's not enough yuri *cough*

Android raptor
04-15-2011, 08:54 PM
Well, and I think many female characters aren't nearly as bad/anti-feminist/whatever as girls make them out to be, it's just these girls have gotten such high standards and arguably misogynistic tendencies from years of hearing that rhetoric in fandom. Especially since there's nowhere near as much hate for male characters guilty of the same things. Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi's been bashed to hell and back for being a "weak crybaby who's dependent on men to save her" yet Shuichi Shindo is a pretty popular character despite having the exact same traits (to an even worse extent if you ask me. At least Miaka tries to be strong, especially in the end. Shuichi just sits around, clinging to a guy who's downright emotionally abusive. Somehow, I don't think Miaka would just shut up and take it from a guy like Yuki).

Or one of the most hated fictional women of all time, Relena Peacecraft. Yeah, she gets off to an awkward start, but in the end she's got one of the strongest wills of anyone in the series (not to mention is one of the most politically powerful people in the world). Yet of course she gets accused of being a horrible, anti-feminist, wimpy girly-girl (amongst other things, some of which are downright ridiculous). Surprise surprise, most of the really nasty hate for her seems to have originated in the yaoi, particularly Heero/Duo fan circles. Maybe it's not that she's a horrendous excuse for a character, it's just that she gets in the way of their hawtyaoiomg and they want to try and justify their unneeded hatred of her? And since it got so nasty and ridiculous people who weren't even yaoi fans joined in because that was "normal" in the fandom. Group Polarization is a concept that comes to mind.

Likewise, are these hated girls really so bad, or is it the fandom and it's influence that's causing it to seem that way? I think it's a good idea to think about whether you'd still hate the character if she were male before going on a bash-fest of her. And really, really think about it, not just say "OF COURSE I WOULD!" and move on.

TL;DR, rambling, I should probably go to bed, etc >.>

I like Relena more than the guys in Wing. Idk about Miaka because I never followed Fushigi Yugi, and I can't compare because I have no idea who Shuichi Shindo is. I also thought there was nothing wrong with Kagome. I like super girly-girls as well. I like super-girly boys too. In some cases like that I do think a lot of the hate comes down to being jealous of a female character.

It's like you end up with 2 main groups; the girls who project on that type (who tend to also ship her hard with their other favorite character), or the girls who are like "that's not like me at all" and end up hating her. Think of the Tifa vs. Aeris or Asuka vs. Rei polarization... for some reason, many people love one and hate/dislike the other.

This is true and has been pointed out before. For what it's worth, I wasn't a fan of either.

I take issue with characters that abandoned their family and/or friends at the drop of a hat for a boyfriend or girlfriend, just as I would with someone who would do this in real life. The person you love should be an important part of your life, but not your whole life.

On another note, I tend to hate tsundere characters. Even if their attitude is understandable to a point, they really just come across as asshole-ish to me. I don't like Asuka from Evangelion, I'm not a big fan on Hetalia's England, I was originally turned off by Toaru's Misaska (until they developed her character more), and so on.

I like tsunderes as long as it's not just portrayed as "cute", so I like Asuka. Then again I tend to go for darker, fucked-up characters. The main archetype I can't stand are purity-Sue ish protagonists like you see in a lot of kids movies (see Littlefoot, Simba, etc). Obviously their Sue/Stu-ness doesn't bother most people, but it just drives me up a wall. Always has, too, since even as a kid I felt nothing for Simba (at best).

Hell hath no fury like my hatred of Land Before Time and its protagonist. I'm not even kidding.

I agree, there's definitely issues to be had with characters who throw their loving family, adoring friends and even precious little Rover to the curb in order to be with their dream boat. I'm not against the fact they're THAT in love, but it's a little unrealistic, considering most people would have too much attachment to their family.

I personally liked Miaka, she did had a typical "save-me" heroine feel, but she tried to be strong and her character (at least in the manga, I never watched the anime) wasn't horrifically whiny, but a typical almost Sailor Moon feel of the girl next door. I much preferred Takiko in Genbu Kaiden though.

I have no hate for the series, or the characters (in fact, I enjoy the anime) of Death Note, but I really, really hate the fans. Not the "Oh yeah its a cool anime" fans. The "OMG L IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO HAWT AND LIGHT SHOULD GO BURN IN A PIT!" or the "LIGHT, LIGHT HE'S OUR MAN IF HE CAN'T DO IT... KILL L!" It's like a Team Edward-Jacob battle >.> Only over a whiny, shallow, not very intelligent and incredibly annoying blond model... minus the blond it kinda sounds like Bella... Hm...

Ohyes. I have some.

Prussia (Hetalia) - Egotistical jack-ass, and never mind the fact that he's sexy, no. I've barely watched episodes with Prussia in them, and the one time I did, I nearly closed the screen window. I can't stand him. I just can't.

X (Megaman X) - I understand there's probably some here in the forums that are X fans, but the guy can barely stand to fight, and if I remember correctly, he also quit being a Maverick Hunter because he can't settle his moral issues (when he should've well know what he was getting into when he became a MH). Also, the fans, in relation to Zero's treatment over X by Capcom and/or in relation to other MM characters (kind-of), are really terrible.

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura (Naruto) - I cannot stand those three. (I can't stand the series in general, but that's not the point.) They're basically mismashed mixes of the stereotypical character type (sorry if this seems rather stupid, I haven't seen the series in a while):
~ Naruto: Outcast + Hero (in some cases) + Group idiot
~ Sakura: Bitch + Love Interest + Heroine (in some cases)
~ Sasuke: Emo Dude (tsundere?) + Punk? + would probably be in some way the Jock (like how Sakura would be the Cheerleader and how Naruto would be the Class Clown going about it in a high-school based way)

There's probably more, but I'm a bit too lazy to find them.

SpockKiriyama

Sonic the Hedgehog - What's the point in being the fastest thing alive if you spend most of your time hanging around waiting for small platforms to jump on?

The entire cast of Harry Potter - I love the Harry Potter universe but the world is inhabited by idiots. Every time something bad happens why don't the incredibly experienced teachers investigate? Instead Harry Potter gets one school year to solve the case.

Also, bad guys, he's a school kid and with two annoying friends. Just wait until they fall asleep and stick a pillow over his face.

Has Voldemort ever heard of plastic surgery?

Chun Li - Lay off the thighmaster.

Captain Planet - What sort of superhero gets taken out by litter?

Astroboy - I don't like his face.

Solid Snake - Kurt Russell is way cooler.

Awwww I like Tifa! xD I see her as caring and tough, and not the kind to sit around and cry if somethings wrong. but thats just my take on things.

for me, it's Aerith/Aeris. I liked her in Crisis Core actually- she was really sweet and kind... i guess it's jsut the whole way she sorta forgot about zack and never even found out he died or anything. it's a little tradgic, hm? D: but her clinginess to cloud somewhat bothered me, and her pushiness around him in some occasions xD she forced the man into a dress for heavens sake :'D i know a lot of people really like her but... mmm her character development just didnt do it for me really. it sort of went backwards for me.

one other thing is her voice. but i dont take that seriously because it's hardly as important, and not the fault of the director or writers or anything. could have just as easily been the vocie of one of my favorite characters, so i wont judge from that.

Not sure if these were mentioned, but I read most of this thread and neither was even touched on.

I HATE LACUS CLYNE! Not only is she ridiculously fake in her idealism, but her relationship with Kira was nonexistent. They meet each other once when he helps her escape being a prisoner on their ship, then suddenly they're made to be the next time they see each other. So contrived.

I also hated Flay, but I don't think anyone liked that psycho manipulative "I suffered trauma during war times, so you have to make everything up to me" whore.

As much as nostalgia makes me want to resist saying this, boo to Rini in Sailor Moon (English dub only, never seen original). Her voices were nauseating (second more than first), she was whiny and a manipulative crybaby for her first appearance, then useless and annoying for the rest. The only time she was even interesting was when she was evil (and even then, still whiny).

It might be because almost no one likes any of the characters you mentioned to begin with :P

Gundam Seed and Destiny barely even make the radar outside of the Japan, so I don't think most people are familiar enough with the characters to have strong opinions about them. Even inside Japan, Gundam fans seem to look back on Destiny with either abject disgust or vague amusement. Meer doesn't fare well at all and Lacus really suffers in her obvious rip-offitude of two generations of Macross heroines.

Though their "I just met you, I love you" formula is pretty much how ALL romances get their start in the Gundam world. The formula for romance is generally either saving a princess/pop star/villaness and/or getting stuck in a situation that requires mutual partial nudity. Romance building in the Gundam world involves... I dunno... doing laundry and adopting orphans *eyeroll*

Gundam is a boys club. I forgive them for not having the faintest idea how people fall in love. Making people believeably care for one another would take time away from glitterwings and explodinating stuff.

Poor Rini has been maligned from the moment her pink little noggin appeared on American tv sets.

Maybe we need to start another thread called "characters you hate who everyone else hates".

Gundam SEED/DESTINY are still more popular state side than UC. There are a decent number of anime fans familiar with the characters, and Flay are Lacus are hardly ones "everyone else loves". I'm not even into SEED and I know Flay especially gets some nasty, nasty bashing, such as the quip Diamondinmyeye added.

BTW, if you think no one likes that "psycho manipulative "I suffered trauma during war times, so you have to make everything up to me" whore.", please read this. (http://hated-character.livejournal.com/424101.html#cutid1)

As for Lacus, yeah, she's a bit unbelievable and Sue-ish, but even at her worst Kira blows her outta' the damn water in that department IMHO.

Romances in Gundam do indeed tend to be pretty awkward though. Even as loved as 08th MS Team is I think it has ones the worst examples of an "I just met you, I love you" romance. The only main Gundam relationship that's decently done I can think of off the top of my head is Domon/Rain in G. At least they knew each other for years and their romance was actually *gasp* developed over the course of the series.

Maybe we need to start another thread called "characters you hate who everyone else hates".[
THIS. Like I kind of implied in some of my earlier posts, 3/4 of the characters mentioned in this thread have huge hatedoms. Hardly what I'd consider "everyone else likes" material. Rini? Misa? Winrey? Flay? Seriously? Those characters get plenty of hate as is, and the fans they do have are barely equal (if even) to the number of haters they have.

OT post is OT ._.

Astroboy - I don't like his face.

I just had to laugh when I thought about what your face would look like when you look at him.

'Kay?

I'm not fond of kids, but that has nothing to do with my hatred of this.. this.. belched rather then birthed clotpole. The fact that she was suppose to be the strongest just added insult to injury. Though, I hated all the characters almost equally.

Loads of people hated her, but I've come across loads who think she.. she and her "kays?" cute. I should have stopped playing after the second one. If you haven't played it, be happy you don't get the reference, 'kaaay?

Prussia (Hetalia) - Egotistical jack-ass, and never mind the fact that he's sexy, no. I've barely watched episodes with Prussia in them, and the one time I did, I nearly closed the screen window. I can't stand him. I just can't.

Thats... probably because you haven't seen any of his good episodes, nor read his good comics. He's not an egotistical jackass XD;; Well, he can be, but his characterization is far deeper than that. I bet if you actually read all his comics, you'd hate him far less. Not saying you'd like him, but you'd probably understand his character more.

^That's pretty much what most of this thread is. I didn't think ANYONE liked Misa, and she came up here.

Though its really entertaining to read the reasons people hate characters. Almost all of the reasons in here are horrifically invalid.

Peoples general opinions aren't horrifically invalid, even if they haven't read, played, or watched every bit of anime, manga, or game X character was in. There are just some characters I couldn't stand long enough to care about why they are the way they are.
