Curious to know if any other coscom members are post-crossers.

I just started recently and so far it's been a lot of fun ^^

If you're a post-crosser, post your profile page so we can request cards from each other here on coscom ^^/

****************************************

What is postcrossing?

Postcrossing is exchanging postcards via snailmail with random, computer-chosen partners all over the world. You never know when and from where your next card will come. The possibility for virtual anonymity and lack of return addresses on postcards prevents creepers from exploiting the system and most people never exchange cards with the same person more than once.

Your profile doesn't need to contain your real name. Address cannot be requested by visitors to your profile, they only pops up as a random destination when chosen by the computer. Postcards don't carry return addresses either. It would be literally impossible for anyone you've actually corresponded with to stalk you (or even find you) based on your interactions at postcrossing.

The very worst thing that could happen is that someone could decide to prank you with something scary after recieving your address in their very first batch of 5 random addresses (you can't continue to recieve addresses until your previous cards are inputted to the system by the recipients).

Why would someone prank you with no way to see your reaction or the outcome?
If all they want is a random address, it's easy enough to obtain one from any of the thousands of address listings on the internet.

Can't wait to get started!

(They didn't have the city nearest to me either, so I tried using the town nearby... but apparently there are two in ontario... so then i changed it to another one that is also close.... its just for the map so its not a big deal)

Odd, thought it was the end of April. Fairly sure the postman who came to the office told the secretary they weren't delivering the next 2 days.

Might be for other reasons.

You can use the walmart photocenter online to make postcards! And best part is, you can make it at home, then send it to the one hour photo center and pick it up the same day! I did some and liked how they turned out :) They do have envelopes, but the postcrossing thing said it's ok to send stuff in envelopes. I figured they'd arrive in better condition that way. I think you can also do custom postcards on cafepress, but it's more expensive and you have to wait a lot longer.

Question. I thought about joining, but hesitated when I considered that a company would have my address... thusly much real-life spam to my real-life inbox. Is this a problem?

Also to consider: this might be prohibited in their current terms of service, but they could sell the rights to their presumably massive address index at any time...

I didn't see any reports of people claiming to get more junk mail. I think this is because companies who send out flyers only do so in a small radius around each store. Flyers and stuff are expensive to manufacturer and make.... and they don't need your address to send them out, at least not in Canada.

Unless you are thinking of junk mail with your name on it... in which case i have never heard of such a thing.

Oh what, like the DOZENS of letters I get from credit card companies to sign up for credit cards? :B

Naw, I'm mostly worried about the prince of Nigeria showing up at my doorstep with a dozen roses for an impromptu blind date... (that he wants me to pay for of course)

Their (http://www.postcrossing.com/privacy) their privacy policy.

The thought of Nigerian princes makes me shudder. There was a guy at my jr. college who was apparently a prince in his Nigerian tribe, and he would follow me around and beg me to become his 10th wife or somesuch. Even the direct approach of, "Okay, so you have a nice car, nice clothes, pretty bling, etc... but would just fuck off?" wasn't enough to get rid of him. Apparently he was heartbroken when I had to involve campus security to get him to leave me alone but sheesh, dude gave me the heebie jeebies!!

Got my first "official" card ^^ From a couple in Germany. It has taught me that there is Kentucky Fried Chicken in Germany. I am a better person for knowing this, surely.

Meanwhile my letter to a 16 year old in China (requested) seems to have gone over ~really~ well. She loves anime/manga and was delighted to meet a cosplayer.

She's open for direct swaps here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I) ^^/ I'm sure she'd love to swap with other geeks.

On a more upbeat note, I did get two really cool postcards!

This one (http://s3.amazonaws.com/static2.postcrossing.com/postcard/medium/1f4f28cf2cc1e05e6e0b25a6e8ad1d8d.jpg) and this one (http://s3.amazonaws.com/static2.postcrossing.com/postcard/medium/c14bdddc62f302b8ef51328984a4fbb7.jpg).

I found my postcards at a stationary store... though I've also made a handful that I worry are good enough to send or not :/ Apparently most people dislike handmade and ad/free cards.

I got another one, from Alabama, with fried green tomatoes on the front and a recipe for them on the back. I'm up to 6 sent postcards logged, 4 received, and 5 in the air. Some of the ones still in the air are from the first batch I sent; I wonder if I have some that will age out rather than getting logged.

I was kind of taken aback at how picky the descriptions of what some people wanted were; I think maybe they don't realize that not everyone has access to unlimited postcards. I figure they can like it or lump it.

Russian post apparently just takes forever. My card didn't go lost or forgotten after all, it just took a whopping 28 days to arrive. Now it has and my first wave of returns has already come in full!

China, Finland, Germany, USA and Australia.

4 cards from my second wave out are already in the mail with one more waiting to be written.

I've also used the forum to participate in a few tags and have found a penpal in Russia ^^

All in all, a good day.

Forgive me for being a noob, but is there a way for us to send a postcard to someone just by viewing their profile?

Users write on their profiles if they are interested in direct swaps or not. If they have toggled "yes", they're usually happy to arrange an exchange outside of the site system. Just send them a message through their profile telling them what you are interested in trading.

It helps if you have a few postcards registered both ways with the system, first, though. That way people know you're trustworthy.

the sad thing about this is i never can think of what to write on the card. talk about how i made the card or what it's a picture of, or even the weather? mrrrrr......... -_-;

I usually include a description of who I am, where I am and then anything about the card that I can share. If it's a picture of something in my city -- what it is, if it's an artists' work ~ whose, if it's something cultural about Japan -- what it is/means, translations of Japanese text on the card.

Some people use information on profiles to write about something they have in common. People write to me OFTEN that they also love sitting in cafes with books and/or coffee. It seems I have that in common with most everyone all over the world ^^

-----------------------------------------------------------

I've just gotten another card from Holland and have had my 6th outgoing card registered by a user in Estonia. My new swap partner is an 8 year-old boy in Russia who loves animals and legos. He needs the English in block letters. Dawwww.

Had my first run-in with a discourteous postcrosser today.

As a new user, I was unaware how maligned homemade cards are and how completely out-of-joint people tend to get about recieving them. So when a lady from Slovakia requested "views of my city and state", I made her a card out of a travel magazine from my area, explaining on the back that I'm from the smallest prefecture in Japan and my area doesn't even MAKE picture postcards!

She registered the card, but included no thank you or message in response.

I imagine she was put out about it's being a made card...

:/ Ah well, learned my lesson ... no more made cards.

So...you join the site, you buy postcards and send it internationally or domestically?

Speaking of self-made postcards, we should send other CosCom members with your cosplay picture postcards with your city as the background. Wouldn't that be kinda fun?

nannyogg
06-03-2011, 08:42 AM
When you get ready to send, you can check a box that says you don't want an address in your country, if you don't want domestic. But there's no option for no international. Whenever postcards are logged as received, the person who sent them gets their name put in the next slot on the list, as addresses are requested.

I made photo postcards at walmart, using their photo collage stuff. My oldest daughter included a picture of her as Seras Victoria on her collage :) People have made really nice comments about the cards (and they were only about 9 cents each to make!).

Just got my 45th card today and am near filling up my 2nd album.

For people who are impatient waiting for cards to arrive and want to send more more often, the forum has a lot of swapping, games, chains and tags going on. I've been playing around for about 2 weeks and have already gotten three times as many cool cards from folks on the forum as I have in the official mix.
