View Full Version : Fanime 2004, worth it?

I've been wanting to go to a CA based anime con for a while and right now I am leaning on Fanime. The only thing is I live in Surrey BC, Canada..... so the trip will cost me A LOT of money.....>.< the plane ticket alone will be like 319 usd..... which is like 400+ in canadian.... so I'm wondering if the con is worth traveling that far for. I dunno if I can go though..... it's like a month after Sakura Con so my funds will be low lol, May 29th is my b-day too hehe (maybe I should ask for funds to go to it lol) Anyone know how much the hotel rooms costed last year. If I do go I have to find some roomies for a hotel..... I'm still kinda unsure about going alone, I have never been on a plane before >.< anyway any info or tips you can give me would be great. *hugs*

Fanime is a really fun con. I've heard Sakura con is really fun too, but I'm not sure on how to compare it size-wise... Anyway, it is definitely worth it to travel to Fanime. If you want a bigger con, you can try AX, which is another con in California, but its in Socal. Those two are very fun!

you can also get a discount on rooms at the adjoining hotels as long as they know you're there for the convention

*blinkblink* You're coming to Fanime just for the heck of going to a California con? No friends here? o.o I dunno if I can really give advice, because as much as I enjoy and love FanimeCon to pieces, I've always loved it because of the friends I get to see.. and I only travel to cons where I'll be seeing people I know. ^_^;

i have to agree with michi. I know i wouldn't have a blast at cons if i didn't go with my friends, there what make it so much fun ^_^, as for hotel fees last year for me its costed like 100+ i cant remember exactly but i hope it helps a lil. So far the hotels haven't mentioned nor has the fanime website have said how much the discount will be and what hotel will be offering what so you will have to wait to see what happens for now.

Well truthfully, Fanime is awesome and I have a BLAST, but I really don't think it would be worth a trip all the way from Canada. It's easier for me since it's the only local con...but I'd have to suggest that you save up and go to AX. The only main reason I choose Fanime over AX is because Fanime is smaller, so it's not anywhere near as crazy. And it's better if you want to meet new people...oh I dunno, it's really up to you what you want to do. But I hope whatever you decision is, you have a great time. ;)

I went out there from Wisconsin last year, and I plan on returning this year. I had a great time, even though I knew about 2 people. I now know 3 people, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. ^^

Hey there. Well Fanime is about the same size if not bigger than Sakuracon. I went to Sakura con last year and didnt know that many people but i still had fun dispite some problems. If u are wanting to go to a Huge Con then AX is the one to go to. it just depends on which one u would like to go to. Have fun at Sakuracon this year.

I'm going because its going to be close by me and I dont have to do driving and more....next to that I'm planning some new outfits to try and have fun with. I hope to find groups to match them with.

Being a cosplayer, the only reason I go to cons to to socialize and check out other costumes.... Fanime is one of the most important things in my life and the experience is amazing. If you're ok w/ shonen ai or yaoi and like smaller cons, you can just save up for Yaoi-con, which, seems to have a slightly friendlier feel to it, prolly cuz its small. I'd cash into Fanime, but I'm a bit biased becuase its the only other con I go to besides y-con. ^^;; If it helps, you meet some very interesting people! I met my girlfriend at Fanime!

"Fanime 2004: worth it?"

As I see it: some of it, yes, in general, but not at those airfare prices. I'll be attending BayCon (SF con) instead (same city, same weekend) which is more worth it than Fanime, IMO.

If I had to spend that kind of money on only ONE CA con, I'd probably make it either Anime Expo (HUGE), or the delightful little Ani-Magic (about 1000 attendees so far, but growing.)

Ani-Magic: Not as good a dealer's room as Fanime by any means, but a real cosplayer's con (most attendees are cosplayers), and a really very nice li'l old weekend party. ^___^
