View Full Version : What makes a GREAT Yoko cosplayer??

Alright guys (not sure if something like this is already posted somewhere, if it is please POLITELY let me know! ;D)
I've been cosplaying Yoko for about a year now, and although she is my most famous cosplay by far, I believe mine to be quite a mediocre cosplay :// I don't have the right belt/shorts/gloves or even the gun!! I see this now and since there are so many other Yoko cosplayers out there, I feel I definitely need to step my game up!!
So what do YOU look for in a great Yoko cosplayer?
The big gun?
The yellow shades?
Does it matter if the cosplayer wheres golden contacts or not?
I'm just curious to what people critic about! I aim to be the greatest Yoko cosplayer in the galaxy!!!!! >;D

The thing that usually makes a costume stand out (especially Yoko) is the contacts. While its not mandatory, it can easily jump a costume from good to great.
Another thing that helps is having the boob size, but again, not mandatory. Its just the little things that make it better, ya know?

The gun makes a difference, for sure. I experienced that first-hand when I debuted my Yoko costume without my rifle. xD
I think what makes a Yoko cosplayer stand out is how you carry yourself and how you pose. Out of a group of Yoko's, the one that I'll be more likely to ask for a picture is the one standing straight and looking confident. :)

Most important is confidence. When a Yoko cosplayer, or any cosplayer for that matter has confidence they stand out.
Also I personally think the Yoko's that have all of the right details are the ones who stand out from the crowd. If they have the belt, the boots, hairclip, etc of course but I personally like the Yoko's that have the rifle, golden contacts, and a styled wig instead of a sideband wig. They just make more of an impact on me.

The wig is a big thing for me too. I myself have an Ebay "yoko" clip in wig and I feel that it is not fully accurate. Yoko wigs that stand out have volume and an extra "oomph" to them!

I like anyone who pays attention to detail
So contacts, wig, a decent gun, poses -- will always catch my eye.
Of course awesome boobs work too but that also just brings more guys around.
For me, it's usually the wig and the way a Yoko cosplayer carries themselves. If they're confident, I'll of course take a picture. Sometimes, if I can see the girl cosplaying Yoko is trying to improve on her confidence, and is looking very shy, I'll go over to her, ask for a picture, ask for a hug, and give her a compliment. Sometimes we need that.
And personally, I'm tired of seeing the rifle. How about the flag? I've seen a couple Yoko's carry the flag around.

A nice body.

I really like when they opt for the darker shade of red, over the bright candy-red that I see. I know it's not entirely accurate, but it usually looks better.
An accurate pair of boots help too.

As a huge anime nerd, I'm a stickler for details. Sooo, basically, here's my list for the greatest cosplay:
(As a warning, the following are details for the ideal cosplay -- something that may be, ultimately, unattainable. I'll admit, there are plenty of wonderful Yoko cosplays out there. But, since you're aiming to be the greatest Yoko and you asked...the cosplay closest to perfection is what I personally think would land you that title.)
♥ How in-character are you? Most people already mentioned things like confidence and everything, but while it plays a large role in Yoko's personality, there's more to her character than just that. For instance, I know someone who cosplays just to be sexy, which is entirely that person's prerogative. But when you pick, say, Chi from Chobits, she isn't exactly aggressively seductive. Sure, Chi partially performed for a peep show, but it's very clear that she's still sweet and innocent. In said peep show, Chi couldn't even figure out how to remove her bra, and she's literally a robot. She will not flirt with someone or pose seductively. In her artwork, any of her sexy poses are clearly unintended, and her face reveals a naive girl.
So, basically? Make the viewer believe and feel like you are Yoko, who popped right out of the animation into real life. Your expression, pose, walk, and mannerisms all contribute to your cosplay. If you even spoke like her, I personally think that would definitely make a fantastic Yoko.
♥ Details, details, details~! But, referring to my previous (heart-)bullet point, does Yoko normally carry a gun around? Is it the flag? What episode/chapter are you picking her up from? It's been a while since I last saw Gurren Lagann, so my memory's rusty, but again -- whatever it is -- I find that being your character can make your cosplay superb. But getting the basics down, from the gloves to her hair accessories, is definitely something to take into account.
♥ When it comes to things like under-boob as you mentioned, it does make a difference, but it's more than just having a nice body. In my opinion, being the best Yoko means trying to have a body shape as close to hers as possible -- not too much, not too little.
♥ Going off the previous poster's post...a darker shade of red is something that catches my eye, too. I know that earlier, I mentioned that a great Yoko cosplay is one that feels like she jumped straight out of the animation. But you have to remember that this is Yoko, jumping out of the animation into real life. This might vary from person to person, but cartoony colors can detract from the overall presentation (or, at least, in my opinion). The only reason it looks good in animation is because, well, it's animation. Everything around the animated character shares the same cartoony color palette, making a smooth, finished look.
Now, in real-life? Your surroundings aren't awash with slick, cartoony hues and shades. So, taking that into account, toning down the colors oftentimes does wonders. Do people think Yoko looks awesome in the anime? Then, in real-life, you want the same effect when they see your cosplay. For me, I found that it also helped to confer with a trustworthy friend/relative that wasn't involved in cosplay. I ask that person what they think of a character in an anime. Then I ask what they think of the cosplay. If the person unaccustomed to the world of anime/cosplay/etc. finds them pleasantly comparable rather than off-putting, it's a job well done.
If possible, I usually noticed that using/dying your real hair can make the cosplay look more authentic, too.
So, here's the summary: the closer your cosplay is to Yoko, the better it is. But, most importantly, have fun being Yoko~. That always makes things ten times easier!
Good luck with it! c:

I don't think a Yoko cosplayer should do the underboob. It just looks really nasty. You should have a good body, that's very important in my opinion. And all together it just has to look right.

I think for any cosplay involving as little as Yoko, all the details are really important. However, I also believe your costume should actually fit your body. Too-small top and shorts look a bit awkward on a real human being, and you don't want to have a wardrobe malfunction.
While I'll give you that some under-boob is 'more accurate' than none, it's not a detail I find flattering for all cosplayers to strive for. You want your costume to flatter you as well as be accurate as possible, after all.

Possibly an alternate Yoko outfit? She has more than her signature outfit, and that would stand out to me. :3
