Hi everyone!

I will be going to my 3rd con next year, and I'm planning on being a comic book villian(animated version, of course) Click! (http://www.comicvine.com/cheshire/29-2537/all-images/108-199748/yjcheshire/105-1868634/) And I was just a little curious what people's reaction are to people from comic books? I can't imagine they're bad or anything, but do people take pictures, or recognize the character? Do they get shunned?

I didn't see another thread for this topic, but if there is, just direct me to it! ^_^

Again, my philosphy is, if you're a fan of the character, go for it.

You're cosplaying for yourself, not anyone else.

I've always been a huge comic geek so I love seeing them!

aw don't worry, i'm sure you won't get shunned or anything crazy like that. people love comic book characters, you'll be great. just be confident and happy in your costume :]]

A lot of people at anime cons are also comic book fans as well. Just about every fandom has some kind of representation, even though the con is anime specific. I did Shadowcat from X-Men for Otakon one year and got nothing but positive feedback! So I say go for it :)

No there shouldn't be any trouble cosplaying outside of an anime or video game. On the contrary, me and several of my friends cosplay random crap all the time. Last con I went to was A-Kon and my friend was Deadpool, which got alot of positive feedback and was his most popular cosplay he wore that weekend.

I myself cosplay stuff from Movies & American Cartoons/TV Shows, and in alot of cases, they turn out to be the most popular ones. If somebody DOES give you crap for not cosplaying from an anime, then they're probably an elitist or a douchebag (or in most cases both). Go for it and don't be afraid to cosplay who you wanna cosplay. :D

I think honestly anything is fine - heck, I saw Papa Smurf at Otakon last year! Just do whatever you like, there have to be people who will recognize your character.

I've done video game cosplays so they're technically not anime related lol. As for really not anime, yeah I've got a few ideas planned, I just have to get all the parts of the outfits put together first.

The only Anime I know anything about is Gundam Wing. I don't know much about anime, and frankly I do not like it. I costume as characters from other media outlets that I do like however.

Yeah, no... No one gets angry at you for wearing non anime costumes at an anime con. Sometimes you even get more attention, because it's "unique" or whatever.
I speak from experience on this. It has been over a year since I did an anime costume at a con.

Lol, in my cosplaying group, I'm the only one who really know's anyone outside of Anime xD
Like, whenever I see someone from Harry Potter, Supernatural, or Doctor Who, I have huge fangirl attacks~

Pardon my saying so, but if they don't know what Harry Potter is, I don't know how indicative they can be of the rest of the country. XD

I've seen Jesus at conventions, so I'm pretty sure you're okay. :D

Heck, I mostly wander around in companion cosplay (usually Rose) looking for a Doctor to abduct me for a day. XD

I know I'm pretty much reiterating what others are saying, but as far as I know, there's no stigma attached to cosplaying non-anime costumes. Even if it's a convention specifically for anime, there is no rule governing what/who you can cosplay, so pretty much anything (within reason) is welcome. Personally, I'm considering the idea of being a character from InFAMOUS for next year's Anime Expo, but we'll see how that pans out.

On a side note, I'm geeking out that you're gonna be Cheshire XD She's made an appearance in both Teen Titans and Young Justice, two shows that have been welcomed with open arms at the conventions I've been to :]

In fact there are many a con that are comic based and seeing Anime cosplayers is rare. My daughters did their Anime characters at a recent con in the north east US and I think they were the only Anime cosplayers there. And it was cool...they did their thing and people enjoyed it.

My next con is an anime con (well, technically a Japanese culture convention) and I'll be cosplaying two characters from the webcomic Homestuck. And I'm not the only one. I personally like seeing non-anime characters, especially since I've watched very little anime myself and I'm not brilliant at recognising characters. My favourite cosplays from the last con included Chell from Portal and Shadow the Hedgehog, haha.

There's usually a ton of comic characters at anime conventions. My personal philosophy is, that I wear comic characters to comic conventions, anime characters to anime conventions, sci-fi to sci-fi, etc., but it's not a big deal if they mix.

You definitely won't be shunned and it's pretty common for people who attend anime cons to be into comic books too so I'm sure you'll be recognised if it's popular enough.

I've done non-anime cosplays (games and web comics) and I had anyone treat me any differently for that, though looking back on it my anime cosplays probably have recieved the most attention and photo requests.

This. If you want to cosplay Batman at comicon, great! If you want to cosplay Space Pirate Captain Harlock at Sakura Con, great! But unless your going to a "fantasy kitchen sink" con (i.e. anything and everything is welcome, like Dragon*Con) Try to wear a costume appropriate for the con.

I actually changed my Con' schedual this year because I'm doing a non-anime Cosplay (Rainbow Dash) Going to Dragon*Con instead of AWA.

I'd swear I just replied to this thread... well if i pop up twice, sorry mods!

I've never been to a convention where there wasn't a mix.
My first years cosplaying were video game mascots, to majorly anime conventions. I couldn't go a few steps without being asked for a picture.
If someone does, for whatever reason, have a problem with it, its likely that their attention isn't worth attracting.
Do what you wanna do, no one is gonna stop you.
Unless its illegal or downright creepy.

Unless its (...) downright creepy.

You've not met some of the intense "L" cosplayers... it IS downright creepy... ;) :P

Normally what I consider creepy is general forgetfulness that a convention is still a public place.
IE. If said L cosplayer is 'glomping' random people, or being generally inappropriate or too loud for any common public setting, they do need to be escorted or receive a warning.
What they look like isn't the issue there, unless its 'My version of L where I wear a thong and a Wig and nothing else.'

It's the former... L's character design is not THAT creepy, but the really intense RPers who portray him can get that way... (Your not familiar with Death Note, are you?) It can make people very uncomfortable...

Actually I am pretty familiar, its the first series I cosplayed from, I was a very short preteen L to coincide with a decently sized group of talented death note cosplayers who taught me the ways of the costuming nerdytimes.
I cosplayed it both before and the during of the Death Note fandom escalade, I still know quite a few Ls that have since moved on, I've only met one truly creepy L, who wasn't quite being in character, just apparently wanting to spend the night my groups room instead of his own to 'Convert Lesbians'.
Generally I never truly saw people being too socially distasteful with it. Just a lot of fans being distasteful, armed with wooden paddles that had just made their way into the scene, craving the spilled blood of the innocent.

I cosplay as Yellow for AX every year. Since she is only in the pokemon manga not a lot of people get it. The ones that do love me though^^. A year ago a lot of people wouldn't know her but she is on Young Justice. So more people will get it then you think. Of course even if she was only in the comic books she is still an awesome character. Basically go for it, have fun and don't care about what other people think!^^
