So I made a costume with twelve inch shoulder pads... only to find out they sagged under their own weight. Does anyone have any idea what to do to keep my pads perky?

Other opinions welcome.

I couldn't get either of those to open. When I copied and pasted, the bottom one didn't work, and the top one gave me the hotlinking error. Ok, tried from here (the reply box), the bottom one worked, but the top one still doesn't.

What did you make them out of? That might help us give suggestions. I would hate to suggest something, only to find out that is what you made them out of. How did you attach them as well? That might have something to do with it. The more information you provide, the more people here can help you. :)

Odd as it may seem, I would try craft paper and buckram....maybe with a little wire for extra stiffness

I am currently working on a Zefiris costume, and I am simply super-starching some fabric and making a wire frame for the shoulder pads. This gives them the proper form, but is still light weight...I still have yet to see how it will work for my costume. But it might be something to think about.

I would try chicken wire with cotton batton around it to pad it out a little, or attempting some sort of plastic contraption (heating and bending sheets of plastic). You could also try many layers of crafters choice interfacing. That stuff is pretty stiff, and if the fabric isn't that heavy, should hold it out there.

The shoulder pads are stuffed with foam... I don't know why they wouldn't open for you and they would for other people! That's really weird.

I've seen foam shoulder pads work on smaller costumes, but I'd guess from my results that they're not the best for larger pads on costumes.

I got them to stand up a little by stuffing little "pillows" filled with cotton between them and my shoulder... if I make the pillows a little bigger, I think I'll be okay.

But thanks everyone... if I do any more large shoulder pads I'll have suggestions to work with. :P
