View Full Version : Ezio's Armor of Altair material help

11-15-2011, 01:03 PM
Hey guys,
My most recent project that i want to undertake is to make the Armor of Altair from Assassin's creed 2 and brotherhood. I also plan on uploading a detailed tutorial on how to make it as well when i complete it and perfect it! :)
The only problem is that I dunno what to look for when choosing the right materials that can fit my budget, are durable and look as accurate as possible to the game's depiction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey! I may not be able to give you advice for this, like some of the pros here, but I found of few people who created armor in different ways.

Craft foam covered with Fabric (Armor of Altair):

Craft foam with Wonderflex etc. (Missaglias Armor):

Craft foam, Felt, Paint (Seusenhofer Armor):

Craft foam, Glue, Paint (Armor of Altair):

Cardboard, plasticine, etc. (Missaglias Armor):
(he explains his method briefly in the comments)

Cardboard, Bondo (Armor of Altair):

I know you're on a budget, but if you are willing the shell out a nice chunk of money there's an option for leather (like this) (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2802302/) and or expanded pvc (a sort of plastic that bends to heat) you can paint or cement leather to. There are many ways to approach this; it's just a matter of what you can get and what you think you're comfortable working with! :) Some of these materials may be cheep looking, but with some time and effort they can look professional!

Also before you jump into making the armor, definitely make a pattern first (like fev did here (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2410410/)) out of newsprint, paper, fabric, or heck even a garbage bag to make sure it fits you and that it looks right. Collect plenty of reference too! The more you have the better! :D I hope this helps!

This helped me SO MUCH!
Thanks Vonviolet! Your advice is definitely good for me! :)
I'm gonna get started on this soon. I'm actually now really motivated to do this...

No problem! Btw I just realized you were asking about the entire outfit and not just the armor. X'D Well, in that case, here are lots more things! (I'm making Ezio's standard ACII outfit so I'm a little familiar with the general construction of an assassin outfit. ^^; This outfit may jump on my list next!)

Armor of Altair by La Licorne Ailée:
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.447274797679.247791.201740547679&type=1 (Ezio with some Courtesans :D)
(I can't read french for my life, my browser translates it for me, apparently the guy who commissioned this works for Ubisoft! XD I thought that was pretty cool! This is one of THE best Armor of Altair outfits I've seen!)

-A couple of notes about this outfit~ The "slashed" sleeves are accurate for the time period, even though Ezio's sleeves look like black and white striped fabric in game. Doing slashed sleeves will take some extra time and effort, but it could be worth it in the end!
-The boots for this are inaccurate, they're supposed to be black with 5 buckles running up the side. If you want buckles (probably about 1in. ea.) prepare to shell out about $15 for about 10 buckles, which is about $1.50 ea. Not bad, but that's from Tandy Leather Factory, if you go to Joann Fabrics they vary from $3 to $5 per buckle, which is vastly overpriced imo. There is a design on the boot, however I can't distinguish it from my ref![/URL] EDIT: I did some more searching on Google and found a back view as Ezio's boots (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/541763649809232062/786ADD9164B4173A5E8FD783418DA77C17FE7B95/). It's looks to be a black version with silver details of the Missaglias (http://lh3.ggpht.com/_RU8vXW4WLqU/S9mNlC_BZLI/AAAAAAAAR0Q/OnGzpDX0Eho/greaves.jpg) Armor (http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/xmeteorz/DSC03740.jpg).
-As for the hood you may want to sew it down in the back so it doesn't slide all over the place. Several people had that problem with Altair's hood. :'D Some people have it as one piece, some have it where it connects to the collar of the tunic.

Hood Pattern/Ref:
(Alternate for hood: http://vegetanthony.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=ezio#/d2q0ymn
This hood will be the bane of your existence, I'm serious. I've made like 8 patterns for my hood and I still don't have it just right. D; The guy who made the first hood above got it super close! My only crit is that the beak needs to be a tad larger and the smaller side strips need the be a little longer. Other than that, it's spot on! :D

Motifs on Doublet and Tunic w/ tails:

http://vesferatu.deviantart.com/art/Armor-of-Altair-Griffin-Print-217153921 (for panels in front)
-To do this you can make a stencil and use fabric paint (or airbrush it on!) or you can hand embroider it. Embroidery would be accurate, cheaper, and very time consuming, but for ease and time a stencil would be the way to go. If you can get your hands on some iron-on fabric transfer paper that may be even easier! EDIT: you can also make a stamp caved from linoleum to save time hand painting each individual design. Another option is to screen print the design on, but unless you know how and have the materials to do so, I would pick an alternative option! ^^;

A few side notes:
-EDIT: The belt insignia, vambraces, and pauldron clip ARE GOLD. Silver can work just as well. The gold will bring out the rest of gold/yellow in the costume and the sliver will bring out the metal details. It's your choice! :3
-The vambrace for Ezio's right hand looks to be apart of the Missaglias armor like his boots, just a different color. I see what you did there Ubisoft! It's not all of Altair's stuff...
-EDIT: The pauldron (leather shoulder piece) is brown in game and black in the concept art. Most seam to have gone with the black, but imo it blends too much with the rest of Ezio's robe so brown may be a better choice for contrast.
-EDIT: The cape is a type of suede, you can get some from Joann Fabrics called micro-suede. It's lots cheaper than actual suede because real suede is leather! The micro-suede is still a tad pricey so be sure to use a coupon! Joann's also accepts competitor coupons now.
-EDIT: The lining for the hood, the red tails in the back+front with the gold fringe, and the ends of the tunic tails appar to be satin (sateen, silk, or charmeuse could work too). The rest of the costume looks like a cotton. (You could probably get away with cotton for everything if you wanted to.) Quality fabric and trim/lace tend to get costly fast if you need a lot so try to find a store that sells fabric for 1.99 - 2.99/yd near you! It will save you lots of money compared to Joann Fabrics where the mark up on fabric is frankly ridiculous.
-EDIT: Some useful websites I referenced to when I made my patterns from scratch.

And a few cosplayers who have made this beast!

I seriously collect too much reference in my free time. X'D Welp, the more the merrier! NOW I think that's it. Phew! If you have the time to read through the main forum thread (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=131330) it's definitely worth your while! The thread mainly covers Altair's, and Ezio's default robes for AC, ACII, ACB, and ACR along with some multiplayer characters. There were a few posts about this variation, but not a substantial amount and far less detailed than what I've sited for you here. Feel free to ask questions over there! It's currently in the ACR/Brotherhood mode, but there's plenty of people who'd be happy to answer your questions! I hope this goes well for you and good luck! :3

My god, this is a great amount of GREAT resources. Thanks a TON dude.
And yea, maybe you should start working on this! It sounds like you've got some resources for yourself as well with all this stuff you found! XD

You're VERY welcome! I'll start working on this after I have my first one done. XD This one honestly looks easier now that I've found so much for it. Time for me to crash in my bed and SLEEP. X'D

Edit: I added some more things in my posts above! Now I'm off to bed!
