What type of makeup and brand does everyone use for their J-rock costumes?... I had an eyeliner and some general black costume makeup and they together did not manage to make my eyes and lips that pure black that they J-rockers have so I was curious just what the heck does work. ;p

I haven't done any j-rock cosplays or anything but Mac stays on long and works great~ I also use this liquid eyeliner that comes out really dark and it's called I-liner or something... Have you tried any theater make-up stuff?

I haven't cosplayed as a J-Rocker before, but I am in various threatre groups. I use Ben Nye make up, which is great! And I also hear their black make-up stays on nicely. It's also fairly commonly found at Hot Topic and Torrid stores.

I forget what brand of liquid eyeliner I use, but I use L'Oreal Wear Infinite smokey eyes. It has black and some greys, and it's really nice quality. It's able to be very dark and is easy to smudge and make look charcoal-y.

Am I glad to see this thread. I guess with the 90's good and gone, goth and grunge out the trendy window, you can't find black lipstick anymore. I guess I'm old... *sigh* But I remember when you could buy black lipstick at rite aid! ^_^
Not that I'm a habitual black lipstick wearer, it's for a costume. I've just been using face paint for it so far.

Check theatrical makeup suppliers. They'll be able to fix you up. Kryolan and Ben Nye are two of the biggest theatrical name brands, and they both make excellent products. Be careful about using makeup on your lips that wasn't designed for them, as you will end up ingesting some of it.

does anyone know who makes black lipstick???
im gonna need some for my filth cosplay...

as for ben nye...i used the blue clown makeup for my royce cospay at neko..that stuff stays on! i mean it! after neko was over i was so tired that i forgot to wash it off, and in the morning it still looked as good as the second i put it on..but make sure to get the powder stuff that makes it smudge proof..otherwise it won't stay...so two thumbs up for ben nye. ^^

I use Chacott-for professionals make up, it's the best one IMHO. The eyeshadow's black shades are really black (and you have to be careful not to use too much or it never goes away...), the eye liner comes with both a thick and thin brush to apply it, and the lipstick (it comes in mostly all the shades of blue and black, also) stays on for a life!

since everyone is suggesting Nye I'll take the opportunity to say do NOT get their mini makeups to make your eyes black... that is what I used and it is not as rich as it needed to be... now their eyeliners are probably great though ;p

Hm...I've never used actual black lipstick...but I've found that simple black pencil eyeliner, used like lipliner and filled in, and then sealed with one of those color-stay clear liquid lipglosses works really well if you're in a pinch or forgotten your lipstick or you've ran out of time ^^; *has had way too many hotel room disasters with makeup*

NARS do a lovely Mana-esque shade of lipstick called 'Times Square' which is deep black/purple. They also do some very nice black and black mixed with coloured glimmer eyeshadows. Like MAC, they cost a bit more.

Eyeliner and mascara - always recommend MAC

I can vouch for the NARS lippie ^^ It is really good and comes out gorgeously dark. A very similar shade to that which Mana wore in the Beast of Blood PV and booklet.

For eyeliner I tend to just use Rimmel and Boots 17, they're cheapie cheapie brands but stay on really well. I just need to find some face whitener.

I've gotten really good eyeliner results with Sephora brand liquid eyeliner. It's nice and mega-black and doesn't come off easily (aka you need soap to get rid of it), and relatively inexpensive. For lipstick, I use this lipstick from the Halloween store that somehow is this perfect extremely black shade, but it does rub off. Since I need my black and white makeup for cosplaying Death from The Sandman, who always has eyeliner designs on, I can mention that if your chosen cosplay requires drawing a design in black eyeliner, use a grey pencil to draw the design first. It eliminates a lot of mistakes.

I use this really cheep liquid eyeliner that my mom got from the swap meet. In my opinion, all makeup is the same. If you wanna have black eyes and black lips, black liquid eyeliner is the way to go. I don't know if the brand actually matters. I'd suggest going to the local Rite Aid or Sav-on or whatever else and just picking up liquid black eyeliner. You can skip looking for lipstick; black eyeliner can be used for that too. Just coat it with clear gloss and you're good to go!

Revlon and MAC both have very long staying power more than the others that I've used before...

Morbid brand makeup has very high quality gothic makeup. You should be able to find a plentiful supply of it at your local hot topic. If there's not one near you goto: http://www.hottopic.com/store/nodePage.asp?LS=0&RN=191 They also sell Manic Panic makeup on their online store. http://www.amphigory.com/ sells a wide variety of unique makeup colors (and if you need a wig, they sell high quality unstyled ones.)

I use Rimmel and annabelle black eye shadow and eyeliner. They both work fablious to create my looks. Painted on with a bit of water makes them last for hours, in fact you can sleep with it on and it won't come off.

Once you get a hang of painting the make up on you can even use the eyeshadow as eye liner. I've done all of Toshiya's myaku make up as well as Shun's make up with a couple of paint brushes and water and it looks just as good as any thing elce.

Although MAC is good makeup, it is way too expensive for me. For cheap (1.99 ea.) black eyeshadow check into the N.Y.U. available almost anywhere as for the blacklipstick I just wait until Halloween and stock up on black halloween lipstick, which ocassionally comes with its complementary black (cheapo) nailpolish. Also you might want to try Hot topic (http://www.hottopic.com) for more black makeup even though it might be a little pricey.

I have to agree..it doesnt matter on the brand but on the technique..
Use liquid eyeliner to darken your eyes..you can use it as an eyeshadow too (if you cant find liquid eyeshadow) but sometimes it hurts when you put too much and it gets in your eyes. BUt when its dry..sugoi...^__^

For black lipstick, line your lips with black pencil eyeliner then put on dark black-red lipstick..smudge and mix and voila, black lips for you. =p

I found a really good cheap black eyeshadow at Kroger. It's Jordana, and it goes on very dark, and solid, and stays on. And it only costs 99 cents.

For eyeliner..I hate liquid eyeliner, personally. It takes forever to dry, and if you open your eyes while it's drying, you get it everywhere. I use prestige black eyeliner, which you can find at some grocery/drug stores. It's like..uhm crayon. You don't have to sharpen it, it just twists up, and it stays on well, and stays put. I also use this for black lips/lipliner.

I have a nice black lipstick, but I don't know what brand it is. I got it I think at a Walmart, or something of the sort, that carried a lot of African American makeup. (I also have a nice Mana-blue, of the same brand). You can ALSO use the black lipstick for eyeshadow. :O

It worked great when I did my Tatsurou cosplay at Ushicon. I wore it for 18 hours, and only had to reapply my makeup 4 times, mostly just to freshen it up, and fix it when it got smudged.

Surprisingly Wet 'n' Wild DOES make a black lipstick and eyeshadow still the only problem is that its typically only available at Halloween time. For the last three years I've managed to find the pitch black lipstick, eyeshadow and nailpolish by WNW at WalMart.

N.Y.C. (http://www.newyorkcolor.com/eyes/eyeliner.html) make a great black liquid eyeliner that stays put. I use it on a daily basis and found that it can be pesky to remove without mascara remover.

Forgot to add... There is a line of makeup that some of my friends have used. I think it's called Manic Panic and you can find that here (http://www.evileyes.com/manic_panic.html).

I used some from the dollar store and it worked just fine, only it was kind of weak and broke so it was difficult to put on after a while.

Hot Topic's Morbid black lipstick is pretty good, and fairly priced at $4 per tube. But make sure its actually black!! [check the label on the bottom of the case] I bought some that looked perfectly normal black...went to put it on...and!! shock!! GLITTER. made it look like a crappy purple-gray color, and the glitter somehow migrated to other places on my face then took up residence there for the rest of the day. x.x;

Halloween is the best time for buying black makeup. Or, even better--hit up the After-Halloween sales. The only problem is, its pretty cheap. But you can easily get a very nice dark black color...too bad halloween stuff wont be out for the next 7 months or so X.x;

http://goodgoth.com also has some pretty good quality makeup, or you could just go to any goth online store and chances are they'll have pretty good quality makeup.

Aqua Color by Kryolon is apsolutly THE BEST for any sort of brillently solid color of make up and it is what most profesional makeup artists use to get that look. Even in the fashion industry. It's basicly like watercolor paint for your face and with a little translusent setting powder it will stay on untile you use soap and water so take it off. It also does not smear or get sticky like liquid eyeliner nor dose it creas. You aply it with a wet paint/make up brush or sponge and let it dry. (Neat Trick: use a fan to facilitate fast drying) A little also goes a loonnng way. You can find Kryolon on line or go to ANY costume shop worth it's salt. If you live in the Bay Area the company is based in San Francisco and you can bye from them directly.
I work at a costume shop and we get a lot of make up artists and face painters in and they swear by the stuff. Also a lot of Goths and Jpop/Jrockers I know use the stuff as well.
If you check out my profile picture I'm wearing the red Aqua Color. (I'm not sure how well you can see it but it's there.)
