View Full Version : Captain America USO Girls: What kind of fabric to use?

If this belongs in the movie thread, please let me know and I'll change it.

Anyway, I would like to make a USO Girl costume from the Captain America movie and I wasn't sure which fabric to use. The USO Girls costuming group on Facebook recommends bridal satin but I know that it frays easily and I don't have a surger. What would you guys recommend?

Thank you in advance.

Bridal/casa is the way to go because that's what's essentially used in the movie.
You could maybe find some Egyptian cotton but it won't have the same sheen.
The fraying is never that noticeable when you put the garment on (the majority of my costume dresses are made of it), but if you're really concerned about fraying you can use a zig-zag stitch on the excess fabric or apply some fray-check.

if you're very very concerned about fraying you can french-seam your outfit. It'll make a slightly bulkier seam, but I promise it'll hold up nicely.

Backing up Faraday on the casa satin :) I used it for my USO Girl costume, and I even "blinged" it a bit and got glitter-time for the white skirt panels and belt--it barely shows in pictures, but looked great in person :p

I'm also going with Casa satin. I was hesitant, too, but after working with it and seeing it in a garment I really love it. You could invest in a pair of pinking shears to cut the edges of your seams if you don't have a serger (or use a zigzag stitch on your machine if it has that option). The pinking will help keep the fabric from fraying.
