I'm having qa bit of a fabric delema as wi want to use Teal velveteen but No one stock thats shade in Southern Ontario. (Dark green yes but not teal)

I also need 11 yards of the stuff for Merida.

This is the only on i can order but it had a gold flower design on it.
http://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/xcart/SWB1202-Stretch-Velveteen-Embroidered-Teal-52-Wide.html

I plan to remove the sequins is I got for it.

The other issue is that it's the only store to sell cotton based velvet to Canada.

This is another option but I'm not a fan of the shiny quality of most 90% Polyester 10% Spandex velvets but it's my only solid fabric option.

Here is a crush cotton velvet.

This is probably the one and only Disney Princess I'll ever do but I have her hair (me on a mad day) and the ridiculously rosy complexion with freckles as well. I'm usually cursing it and covering it up with a full coverage foundation to hide my red cheeks just don't work with cosplays.... for once I can actually wear less foundation. :mfg: :bigtu:

Awesome! More Merida love! And I LOVE when I can use my own hair for cosplay :D

I did some searching and got these, not sure if it's 100% the color you're looking for, though.

I also think the dress is a darker green in the trailers since it matches the plaid worn by her father (weird lighting *ugh*) and when I used the dark hunter green shade it made the wig pop more. To each his own, though, I know your dress will look gorgeous irregardless of the "proper" color, lol. :)

My god why didn't that show up! I've always ordered from them too and searched there first. lol

It's out of stock till the end of May so June it should be back in, I've got time. The shade on screen looks the same. ^_^ Cross my finger they will have another good sale code in time for the restock.

Yay! Brave cosplays! I am thinking of going as Merida myself someday, but probably in her fancy dress.

I'm not sure how to do the gussets under the arms though, or what kind of fabric I'll need for the dress (silk?) Also, the wig. Does someone know where I can find a wig that bouncy?

Once I see the movie, I might dress up as another character, though. We'll see.

Techinally the split part is an under-dress she wears the is revealed when the seam rips when she moves her arms to pull the bow. You can see the collar of it in white as well.

Silk or a nice Sateen fabric would works. Silk won't be period accurate but the Queen's looks like a Silk Dupioni with all the nubs in it.

In the hi-res screen caps I've found it looks pretty teal, rather than green, but yeah I agree it really is an each to their own. I'm using a nice deep teal (more toward the green end than blue) linen (as that's a bit more accurate for the time period) since I'm doing this cosplay for the summer, and linen breathes. XD The chemise (under dress) is really the only thing that will probably make it warmer than I'd really like, lol.

Probably one of the same ones I am using for my friend's Gothel costume.

XD I think I got away with 5 for my Gothel, and 8 for Merida because of the really full skirt. Eleven just seems really excessive to me. My Elizabethan and Tudor gowns didn't even take that much fabric.

Ani_BEE
04-24-2012, 10:43 AM
Yes I found another one that is MUCH simpler, the two I was looking at were really full in the skirt area.

Butterick Pattern B4827 EE call for 5 to 6 yards.
http://butterick.mccall.com/b4827-products-6120.php?page_id=916&search_control=display&list=search

These were the two I was looking at.

http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m4490-products-413.php?page_id=493

Also some of the fabric I was looking at were extra narrow so it would jump from 9.5 yard to 11.

Does linen come in softer weave as the only I come across are rather thick and tight or potato sag style.

I'm also not using wool form my cape..... I have a skin reaction to wool (itchy/readness/welts) and it will be summer. I feel like I'm cheating but I avoid wool as much as possible and only have winter coat that I protect my self from with scarves and glove. lol

Elycium
04-24-2012, 03:07 PM
Avoid that McCall's pattern, it puts together like crap. That first Butterick you have listed (B4827) works nice - I've put it together a few times.

Most linen is light and not really thick. Its great because it breathes nicely in the heat (something velvet doesn't seem to do as well). If you have trouble finding it in your local JoAnn's, ask one of the clerks to help. There should be some that isn't like potato sack (I've seen that stuff too). And if not, there's always online? (I use linen for almost -everything- not fancy for my SCA clothes).

I'm not using wool for my cloak either. HECK no. I don't have reactions to it like you, but like you saif, its going to be summer, and there's just now way, lol.

Ani_BEE
04-24-2012, 04:11 PM
I'm somewhat jealous of the magical place that is JoAnn's as the online ctataloge is HUGE. lol

Most of the time I only see linen in the fabric section of Toronto, as Fabricland would never bother to carry it and what you find at Len's Mill is for drapery only. ^_^

I actual have all my fabric for her but the teal outerlayer dress. I'm wait for a swatch before I decided.

In fact all I need is a good wood bow that I can carve into. ^_^

^ she looks like the doll version of Merida they put out. Sparkly fabric. O_O
http://www.flickr.com/photos/b0ttledwater/6865449971/

I got very luck! I was just at Fabricland to pick up some thread for my current project and they had Dark Teal 100% cotton velveteen on sale for $9.50 a meter. It's a low luster version so it even less colour shifting then my Jack one. It's also lighter weight then the other velveteen I used.

The shade is almost exact to the movie colour with a stronger blue tone just a tiny bit darker but I don't mind, I'll be an even more flaming pale redhead with it. I saw it on the rack and had a freakout. :mfg:

I'm also sure it's the same fabric as the one ayaasan linked from Fabric.com above. I ordered a swatch from them before fining this that is coming in the mail.

I'm probably not staring her still after the movie comes out (well the cape and the bow I could work on. ^_^)

The brooch design.

I just saw the dolls and the movie preview yesterday. I'm in love with that outfit! Is there a good way to simulate slashing on the sleeves without making an entire under-dress?

I was explaining slashing to my date, and I think he was kind of confused.

Moonfall- You could wear a tight, long-sleeved, white undershirt underneath the bodice since you don't see the skirt part. I'd recommend some sort of athletic shirt so that it will also be breathable.

Ani- Try ebay for bows. Wood ones are harder to find, but they're there.

Just finish the edges and add new sections or the turtle neck idea.

I'm debating on just adding sections or making a under shirt (under dress is what it is) myself on her hunting dress.

They ones seller I've got on my watch list that has hickory bows. I'd love to find one locally first if I can as the shipping is high to Canada.

I'm also realized I might have to fake the carving as it might cause the bow to break at the thinner point... I was looking forward to carving the design in but most of the bows are not as thick in body as hers.

Ani-Bee... just came home from Fabricland... THEY HAD TEAL VELEVETEEN! It was plain and the perfect colour! It was $18/m it was a medium weight on the lighter side...i think it was literally the perfect stuff you're looking for. I tried to take a couple pics of it but they didn't really capture the colour...it was somewhere between these two shades...( basically exactly what hers is for colour ).

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/IMG00904.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/IMG00903.jpg

You can kind of see the draping in it too showing it's a big of a lighter medium weight...it was very soft, i thought it felt more like velvet than velveteen in terms of flexibility.

If you want it and don't want to drive down to Niagara, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Maybe we can meet up at AN and I can give you a sample...it would be heavy to ship though, and the next nearest con is FanExpo...HMMM

I think that the same fabric is got at Fabricland as it was Dark Teal 100% cotton velveteen originally $18 a yard but I got it at 50% off. It's really short pile velveteen so it has a low luster/ colour shift.

I'm making her as my main costume for Saturday at FanExpo. ^_^

And speaking of wigs, has anyone seen that sometime in June Arda wigs is going to have a wig that will be perfect for Merida? They actually mentioned that in their description (its the new long version of the Glinda). So, anyone looking for a wig yet, there's an option.

But the only thing I was going to make before the watching the movie was the cape anyways.

Hey everyone! I'm another one doing a Merida costume this year (hopefully finishing in time for SDCC). I was pretty sad that I bought my Arda wigs before the new long Glinda came out. I bought the Glinda and a Claudia and am splicing them together slowly but surely. I didn't like the pumpkin color, personally. It was a little too... well, pumpkin. I think I ended up with the dark copper red, which is actually looking pretty good.

Here's a progress pic! SO MUCH HAIR and I'm only about 2/3 done. It's really frizzy right now, after I finish sewing the wefts in I'm going to defrizz it and recurl.http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4z2ovCrX41ql89q0o1_500.jpg

Ani_BEE

Are you splicing them row by row (weft by weft)? You sould be able to re hand curl this wig first to see if you like the new crazy texture your creating.

I have the light copper red and am looking forward to getting the Pumpkin shade because I want that Orange hue (otherwise I'd use my own crazy copper hair lol).

Dark Copper Red is an option int he new wig as well.

It also seem Merida gets her cloak pendent from the witch.
http://pixar.wikia.com/Witch

Edit: Though I would share this little bit of information. In an article for Galaxy theater's in Canada they mentioned that Merida has 22 costumes. Not I would hazard to guess that also include variations on the distressed version of her outfits and as a child as well as I don't foresee the movie being that long to warrant it.

I sorry to double post but I'm in a bit of a delema.

I want to buy a bow and carve in the design (heat tool actually) but Merida has a recurve bow and the only ones I found online are thin in the arch were the designs are and I'm afraid of shatter the grain and causing the bow to split as there is a lot of tension one these types of bows.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/White-Archery-Traditional-hunting-Longbow-10-60-Nice-Bow-Recurve-bow-String-/320869674636?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab552ae8c

I did find this US manufacture but it not accurate to the shape of hers but is much thicker like her's is and can take the scoring.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/250436941008?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I've also design/ordered some royal tartan from Spoonflower. I order three fabric swatches the two cottons and the cotton linen base fabric.
http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1236154

I tired to go as accurate as possible but the dimension of the line are larger and the colours as close as possible. I did this intentionally as Disney is a afraid of copyright infringement and the shade of the tartan vary a bit from the products images to linen seen on the king.

Why make it because I've got a sneaking suspicion that the Parks dress is the one we will see at the end of the movie. Plus I kind of want to make that belt.

Assiduity you will make a great queen Queen Elinor. (If I didn't love Merida design so much I would have probably done her.)

First thing ink doing a remove the plastic/rubber hand guard. lol

I was looking up different way to make a bow including heat shaping PVC pipe (search PVC archery bow) but i feel more conferrable dress up a pre-esisting fiberglass bow as I don't have the ventilation or the room to carve or heat up plastics.

My arrow are going to be foam tipped anyways for my piece of mind. Higher grade artist acrylic are the best way to paint something that flexes and I've done a lot of wood grain painting in the past.

BTW the PVC bow are amassing way to go. *_*

Also this one is amazing shape but I' won't be able to complete the auction as I will be out of town (if only if I had a smart phone. lol)

Hey guys! Also looking to start a Merida cosplay, so excited. =]
I just can't decide on anything, though, haha. I've got so many options for her wig, and I can't settle on one. I'm very weary about colors, while I love New Look's Diana the most for the shape, I'm worried about any of the reds not quite having the orange pop I feel it needs. I'd probably have to add pieces from other orange wigs to make it a better shade? I don't know. Same with Lioness. With the Arda wigs, I feel like I'd have to add to it either way, either for top-volume, or length. I can't seem to decide!

I also struggle with the bow. I like some of the options you guys have posted, particularly the $37 one from Ebay. The only problem is how flat it is compared to her bow, since it's modern, of course. You pretty much won't find a rounded bow like she has anywhere. I'm trying to think of some options to fashion a mock bow with the same shape, but something that will be plenty sturdy for a con environment. I may end up with the Ebay bow in the end, though. We'll see.

I think with the new Arda wig (The Merry), it actually does have enough volume, you just have to tease the curls a little bit to fluff it out. They showed (I want to say on FB) what it looked like with the curls teased, and it was almost perfect.

I'm just hoping they're still in stock in a few weeks when I'm finally able to order one. My costume is complete, save for the wig and the bow.

Yeah.. I think thats the way I'm going to go. Everything so far is just too dark, not really as bright and vibrant as I like. I might pick up some wefts to add to the top anyway, just to make sure there isnt any real "part" and to add her cute little forehead lock. The price is certainly right, too, lol. I'm excited to see your finished product! I feel like I have so much to do, lol.

I think I'm going with the Butterick pattern mentioned earlier in here. The adventure for fabric begins, lol.

Also, @kiggi, from the photo you took, I think the gold option on the left and definitely the "blue radience" would be my choices. Though, either gold could work. I'm on my phone, so it's a little hard to judge properly.

@kiggi, I agree with psychoaccess on the blue radiance and right hand gold (sunshine?). The blue jewel seems more blue than turquoise.

@psychoaccess, It seems that she uses a straighter longbow for most of the film (after the fight with Elinor), so I don't think it would hurt to do that. If you could come across the materials and tools, you could always build your own curved base? Honestly, I think the curve is slight enough that a regular longbow would work really well. (I'll hopefully be taking a bow-making class in January, so I would probably just carve some detailing into that one.)

I don't forsee myself actually making my own legitimate bow, sadly, don't have quite the time or the funds. If I find the right materials that are sturdy enough, I could attempt to make a frame with the same shape as hers, and then just use elastic string to emulate the look of nocking an arrow. We'll see how it pans out.

Also, I loved how your dress came out! I really like the fabric and the color. Did you use linen?

It was a hard choose for me to make as well on the bow I was looking up ways to make one from scratch that could bend but I just don't have the power tool to do it properly in the end.
I was going to crave it out of upholster foam and shape it smoother with a spading belt (this is the tool I'm missing and is crucial) like most mascot maker do. I would then cut a seem to the centre of the bow and inlay a wire for spring and shape. seal the seam then heat tool the design into the foam. Then start to ad layers of latex and/or acrylic to seal the outside and a wood paint finish.

The bow would still be cable to flex when you pull the sting back but would also be prop stage safe and street legal as well.

Also her bow is a misnomer. Most Celtic horse style bow thin down in the arms but more then what they did with hers. You can see too styles here.
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/33608333@N06/tags/stpatrick/
Both have a thicker grip but the arms are thing so that their is less tension in the draw.

Merida should have some massive biceps using that bow as the adding thickness would make it twice as hard to pull the bow string/arms back.

I also will have two wigs now for Merida... the Arda colour was to good to pass up trying to tease but most wigs that start curly can be tease further.
This was the other wig i got which comes in a natural ginger (Light Ginger shade).
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290442663596&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:CA:1123

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300265951451&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:CA:1123

In the end if the Arda one get to messed up I'm happy with the ones I linked.

That dress is not in the movie but is what WDW has chosen as Merida'a meet & greet dress.

I cannot imagine trying to find the perfect wig for Merida. It's crazy insane! Thankful I can use my own hair even though it's too short. It's just longer than mid back & obviously not as voluminous but nothing beats no wig!

Can't wait to see pictures of everyone's cosplays!! I'll put mine up soon.

I won't be till the end of August I'm debuting her. The wig hunt was intense as I have about 5 workable wigs for her that I saved the link/product codes too. lol

My hair would make he suffer if I tired to add more copper to it for a full year. I've done the whole dye my hair thing for cosplay and it make me regret it every time. I would be so bad if I had more blonde in my natural mix but their just too much brown and no enough copper I would need to stripe the color back to a crazy orange shade then you strip copper hair. >_<

Yes the WDW dress kind of scares me, the fabric looks like fish scales. lol

Yeah. I might remake a bow later on, your method sounds good, but I also lack any sort of the tools to do it, haha. And thanks for the texture link! That's a good read.

I was actually looking at that seller, as well, I also have a text file of several different wig options. I really like the Arda wig mostly because of the color. While the more natrual tones aren't bad, I really like the orange tones of Merida's hair.
And of course, the evening I finally decide that Arda is the direction I want to go in, they are sold out. Sigh. Lol. Luckily I'm not wearing Merida until sometime in August, so hopefully I can get the wig before then.

Eep, thanks! I'm really happy with it as well (the only things I've actually made in the past two or three years were a sundress, an apron, and a handbag so I'm really pleased). I did use linen because southern CA + wool + summer = not gonna happen. (Of course, I say this two months before I go to Scotland, dress-in-tow. At least, I hope I'll have my dress in tow.)

It's (at least) very similar to the dress she wears at the end but, in my opinion, that dress looked to be a very dark blue rather than black. And, as previously mentioned, it's the base for the face character parks dress. (The second time I saw it, I paid particular attention to the bottom of the dress and it does have some of the same/similar detailing.)

I like it! I'm in the same boat, living in Florida, so linen it's going to be for me aswell, haha. I've also only sewn maybe two/three things before this, so I'm hoping it goes well enough.

And, to put some curiosity to rest about the black "Epilogue Dress" I took a screen cap, and also cropped it down to where it only shows Merida wearing the dress, for study:
http://i.imgur.com/UlOHv.jpg
I think it is black, when you look at the highlights on the fabric, they're relatively colorless, and it seems like a velvet fabric. It has the same wide belt and detail at the bottom of the dress as the art does.

EDIT||
Also! I forgot to add. I immediately pestered Arda about their Merry wig, lol. They don't have Merry listed on restock yet, so I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. I was told that they won't be getting the Pumpkin color back into stock for another 4-6 weeks, but! They are also currently working on adding another color variation of Merry soon, that's close to Pumpkin. They just don't have pictures of it yet.

@psychoaccess, Yeah, I feel that linen has a similar aesthetic to wool (at least, based on the wool in the movie) so I think it's a great alternative choice. I might eventually make a version in wool as well but I doubt I'd do it in the teal (ooh, maybe I'll make the Epilogue dress in black wool). I prowled the fabric district in downtown LA for that color because I didn't want to dye if I didn't need to. (What pattern are you using?)

I do think that it looks more velvety than wool but I don't know.

I like the weave in linen as well, it looks very similar to the texture in the film, so that makes me happy. I haven't gone out to actually go out and try and find it, but apparently, from what others have said in this thread, Jo-Ann's has a teal linen that works? So I might go out and check that out. If not, my fiance's mother might be able to help me find what I want, since she runs a sewing shop. (Up a couple states from me though, so sadly I cannot make use of all the wonderful machines and such they sell OTL) There's also a fabric store about 30 minutes from me that I haven never been to, though I have heard they're a little expensive. I need to figure out my pattern and what I need first, before I go find fabrics.

I planned on using the Butterick B4827. I haven't bought it yet, though. Which did you use?

Linen is period accurate as well and in the summer no one would wears wool. (I just can not WEAR it against my skin, it break our in a rash. lol)

You can also dye linen to the shade you need as well but from personal experience dyeing a lot of fabrics once requires a fie pit and steel garble scan. lol

Fabric.com has a few hunter green linen options.

My cape is a texture synthetic fabric I've picked up and need a good washing, it had nice drape and again wool would be a nightmare for the August heat. I will have to option to take it off during the day.

Butterick B4827 is the pattern I'm using as well.

@psychoaccess, I agree with you on the film aesthetics. I'm torn between whether I think it's linen or wool. Ooh, good luck on your fabric search!

I actually didn't use a pattern. I modified a generic t-tunic "pattern" to include gores, a back lacing, and modified sleeves. I also added darts to the sides because it was way too big when I first put the dress together. If I remember correctly, I only bought four yards of linen and had half a yard (maybe more?) left after finishing the dress. I did a similar thing for the underdress. I can go into more detail at some point if you'd like me to. (The instructions for a t-tunic can be found via google, I'd link one but I'm on my phone right now).

@Ani_BEE, A huge part of the draw to linen is that it's period. It was important to me that I use period fabrics so I could wear this dress to middle ages reenactment events. (Which is also why I haven't yet made the belt and quiver since I want to use leather and make a fully functional quiver, but there's not a leather store near where I live.)

Ani_BEE
06-26-2012, 11:42 AM
Yes my fabric store have leather but the inflation on it is really expensive ($50 for a 12" square.)

The velveteen I got looks more like wool with the shorter pile to it.

If can can get the fabrci right for the lower part do you think it would be ok to do the epilog dress in the park's palette but with real textiles. lol

Sonsko-chan
06-26-2012, 03:24 PM
@Ani, Eugh, that's so expensive! When I put together my armor for reenactment, I got an entire hide for about 175$ but I used most (aka all) of it on the armor itself. Hm...I wonder if I can convince my brother to let me make a quiver out of his spare leather.

Also, in my experience, dying linen gets tricky because sometimes the fabric doesn't all take the same coloration.

So making the Epilogue dress in the Parks colors? Because I think that would be just fine (I think I've seen one or two people do that).

@psychoaccess, I've also heard that McCall’s M4490 would be a good starting point for this dress.

I don't know if it was in this thread or the Disney thread that I mentioned it, but I highly recommend staying away from that McCall's pattern. The neckline does amazingly horrible things, and it has a tendency to never come out right.

It's about 1.5 inches across. Not entirely sure how I feel about it, I might remake it. I've got paltry tools for my dremel, so nothing that was small enough for the carving, and ended up doing it by hand. I don't know if that just makes it look "period" (lol) or messy. This is also just one coat of paint without adding texture, and I still plan on tarnishing it.

Yes it might be a long shot but I want to try this method of bleach (http://calamitykim.typepad.com/calamity_kim/2008/10/soft-scrub-bleach-discharge-on-velvet-tutorial.html) out the design in velveteen and redye the sections lighter blue. I will be making this section out of the extra fabric I got rater then ruin the dress fabric if it doesn't work i still have my standard dress. I'm also most certain they don't sell Soft Scrub in Canada so I'll be looking for a alternative.

Tho other option is to strip the extra fabric and redye it the lighter colour then cut and sew the pattern on. I want the texture to be the same otherwise I you go with a other fabric in a lighter shade.

The Disney parks dresses are actual two tone with the lower section is in a black background for the design.

Tarnishing makes everything look better. ;)

Woop, been a bit since I replied within her sadly, since you all seem polite and what not.
I've been working on getting things completed for Anime Expo, which is tomorrow.

Anyways, I can't wait to be Elinor, especially after seeing the movie.
I'm especially excited to work on her wig, since there isn't a whole lot to do, but I will say I am slightly struggling upon finding one.
I found this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/150cm-Chestnut-Brown-Heat-Styleable-Extra-Long-Cosplay-Wigs-81-04A-/110869698984?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D230941930723275806%26pid%3D 100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D8%26) but I'm uncertain when I split it and start the weird ponytail type things, I really have no idea what to call them xD;, they won't be thick enough.
A friend had mentioned getting some pigtails and putting them in there, but he never explained how to really.

Basically, my question is how can I maybe make it look a bit more thicker without spending too much upon very long wefts, or even buying a second wig and doing the wefts that way?

Also, a friend has a grey weft left over, so I'm super excited for her to help me get that into my wig. :D

I'd also post references, but it's a bit hard at this point sadly, since there's no many screenshots of back view that are big or good quality >__<;!

@Assiduity, have you considered putting something in the middle (yarn, padding, etc.) and wrapping the wig around that to add some shape to it? I once saw a Rapunzel wig tutorial that did that and it seemed to work out pretty well. I can't find it right now but I think it was on deviantart.

Padding is golden, most wig maker, make pillow in the the shame colour as the hair and shape you need and stuff it. This allow the structure to still bend also if the hair shift to reveal some thinner spots the fabric being the same colour will allow it to be less noticeable.

You also need to sew the pillow to the base of the wig as well for the gathered ponytail.

I don't want it to be too heavy or thick, due to how small I am, I'm only 5 feet tall XD;, so I worry that my head will go looking towards the sky if too heavy.

Given you're only 5', you could probably get away with a Godiva-length wig. You can use the pillow idea and use wefts to cover the thin areas. They don't have to be huge, just big enough to give it volume. You could also try pool noodles.

Ani_BEE

pool noodles work well with jump braid because her have seem to have a bit more flow the pillow idea would work out to be more softer. I think the one wig and a few wefts should cover it. Also because the pillow is fabric could can sew on wefts to it directly as well.

Okay. So I read through this whole thing, and looked at all of the suggestions for the Merida wig.
However, I still am not content with the colors. I like the look of Arda's Merry in pumpkin, but at the same time, I don't think there's enough volume at the top (it seems very thin to me), and it's a bit too orange for my tastes.
Then when looking elsewhere, all of the reds are too deep.
I just want to find a wig with the right balance of red and orange. I love the look of the face character's wig. Does anyone have any suggestions? ^^ I'm also very particular about length. Most wigs I've seen either fall just below the shoulders of above, and that's much too short in my opinion.
Is there a way to lighten/dye wigs? ^^

Gah, so I was hoping, sincerely hoping that the new color variations Arda said they were going to have for Merry would include Light Copper Red, but unfortunately it is the Dark Copper Red. Way too dark for Merida. The Light Copper Red probably would have been a decent replacement for the Pumpkin, I think.
I still like their wig best, so now it's the waiting game of restock, or them introducing the Light Copper Red color. =\ Whichever comes first.

Butterick is not bad really but I usually forgo the instructions as I find those at times confusing. lol Most things are marked out clearly however to know what they are implying. With a dress I feel like it's a simpler pattern then some of theirs as well.

I used there B5440 Misses' Costume for the base of my Red Queen. I only ran into trouble with it because they didn't have plus sizes at the time fro the pattern so scaling up was a nightmare.

For reference here a picture of me in Light Copper Red.

Shana, if you liked the colour of the fabric you saw in the store, and there wasn't enough on the roll, you can ask them to order more, and they'll call you when your order comes in. That way you don't have to worry about the fabric coming in the wrong colour from online. Plus, generally when you have the store order it (if its like a Jo Ann's) you won't have to pay for the shipping.

As for the Butterick pattern, that particular one is very straight forward. You probably won't even need the directions, as it really is an obvious "piece a fits to piece b" type dress.

Oh, thanks for the tip. I'll ask them next time I'm over there. I also appreciate the feedback on the pattern. I've always been nervous about Butterick.

When shopping for my vinyl last night (leather is still to pricy even the scraps are $25) I pick up a new white linen fabric for the undershirt as the fabric I got online remand scratch/stiff despite repeat washing for 100% cotton.

Also picked up my bow.... I think I'm making mine now. It a rather thick fiberglass body that has no give. Forget getting the one I linked because it seems more leather then I would like to carry around. I hope this works but I'll be carving it out tonight.

I have both version of the Brave Tartan up for sale now.

Well I tired to get my velveteen dry-cleaned first but the cleaner highly recommend me not do it with their machines. Might cause streaking was the issue. O_o

So soakwash it is!!! But it also means I wash after I've sewn it up so that I use less soap. ^__^ They also sell it at Aqua by la Vie En Rose store in Canada if they are not in the main La Vie En Rose stores.

I also recreated the hem of Merida's Epilog and Disney Parks dress (see the full pattern in 2 yards view)

When i bought my fabric I was going by a few of the teaser images the cape looked brown but it a shade between brown and olive grey. I've tried to find something like it but have failed miserable over then on wool (but I'm allergic to wool so that's a no go for me.)

Do you think I can get way with this?

Tea dyed my feathers last night and cut down my bow shafts and sanded the ends as well. Feather are still damp in the photo and lightened a bit after drying

Ani_Bee, your fabric colours look good. I would say if you can, maybe try and dye the cloak? And if not, don't worry about it and just go with the brown. It matches the reference you had at the time, and really, I don't think people will nit-pick

Yes it's a lot of fabric to dye with iDye Poly and I'm not sure how well 7 yards will take. Last time I dyed that much fabric I ended up with random spots. I'll keep looking though.

Hand sewing my quiver right now as my sewing machine is still MIA from Sears! I'm made the form out of 4 10X13" sheets plastic canvas first as the vinyl is flimsy. My quiver will look longer on me because I have shorter legs compare to Merida >_< but I need it this length to hold my 30" arrows to match the bow and my draw length.

So, I'm not sure if I'm as pleased with the Merry wig as I thought I would be. I'm on a backorder for it, so I don't have it yet, but I've seen some pictures of those who got the first order in. I still feel like it needs to be longer and with more up top.
I just don't know.

It look thin to me even though it's not. You really need two of them to build up the volume with teasing it completely out. I'm on back order as well for a second one. But I might have to sell mine off and go with the natural Light Ginger wigs I got for Aug. 24 (Fan Expo).

Longer would have helped as well.

Yeah. I'm only really pleased with the look a claudia+glinda will give you, but I wish they both came in pumpkin or light copper red instead of only both coming in the dark version. There's just no winning here for me, ha. I may just have to settle for the Merry wig at first, and then as I can afford it, order another wig to help fluff it out and maybe lengthen. We'll see, I'm going to try and not stress over it right now.

I got my bow in, it's the simple, pale wooden one from ebay, not entirely the proper shape, but I'm hoping to add to it at the grip and ends to give the illusion of more curve in it. I might end up just making a bow later on, but this is what I have for now.

I really need to go and buy my pattern and fabrics. I think I'm putting it off because I both want to and don't want to start sewing, lol. I need to clean up some before I start sewing, honestly.

Never the less, I'm going to Jo-Anns today to at least get some other things, if I don't end up buying fabric. I need to get the leather and beads for the bow grip, feathers and dowels for arrows, and look into materials for the quiver and belt.

I wish I could add a weft or a curly clip to harvest from to my Arda order, but none of those are restocked until the end of August. I'm just going to have to use Merry as it comes with some styling for the first time I wear her at AWA. I'll survive, lol.

I did go out and buy almost everything I need, though! My pattern came in and I bought all the fabric. I'm trying to decide if I want to tint the linen I got (I went with the Deep Lake color at JoAnns) into a touch more blue shade, but I do also really enjoy the color as is. I have all the parts to modify my bow, and make the arrows. The only things I lack are supplies to make my quiver, which I think I'll worry about once I get some headway on what I already have on the plate. Same with the cloak. The cloak is the last thing I'm going to be concerned with.

Now to clean up some space in order to work, haha.

The hem pattern is really details so I have it listed on spoonflower in both the epilogue black and the Disney Parks blue.

Which wig are you using for the top layer Su Ying?

I'm still waiting for my arrow heads to cur before I can feather the tails. Also made the stones out of tin foil base and a thin layer of paparclay you see on the bottom end of the bow.

The medallions are done however but I had to repaint them are the enamel paint reacted badly to the fimo and refused to cur completely (stayed tack). So I ended up using Rub N Buff in Autumn Gold instead after.

First time using Rub N Buff, It's so cool and little goes a long way.

I sewed a comb into the front of mine, french braided my hair across the front, stuck the comb in and it was super secure. I only needed to pin down in 4 other places. Be sure to not be an idiot like me, though, and slide the comb directly into the front of your hairline if you have a widow's peak at all. The weight of the wig ended up resting on that one little section of hair all day (very painful), and I ended up with a welt and a now a bald spot in my hairline. The next day I stuck the comb in further back and it was infinitely more comfortable.

I'll me making a new string and order some bungee cord in 3mm width to replace the 5mm poly cord it came with. Progress: I have the dress mostly done, just working on embroidering the eyelets on the front, and need to hem the bottom, and had the trim on the neck, and do the sleeves. I am so excited to be done soon! I will probably be doing something like the park dress/end dress for the belt.

Does anyone have or know of any good tutorials to tease out the merry wig? I'm afraid to just wing it, so it's sitting on my wig head.

Also, ani-bee, you made the tartan pattern on spoonflower right? Is it available to buy?

Ani_BEE
08-13-2012, 09:41 AM
Yes it is. I actually have two version of it. One based on the official art and one based on the in movie colours.
The "official" one is more accurate/detailed. you will only need a yard and I recommend the cheaper Kona Cotton or the Linen-Cotton Canvas if you want a more textured look to the fabric.
http://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/ani_bee

For the merry just tease it hand by shaking you hand/finger into the fibers once your done fluffing you can set with hairspray letting the hair dry int he opposite direction. ^_^

Added more pictures to the gallery progress. I ended up work on the bow last week instead of the dress. The wood grain was brushed in with heavy body acrylic paint in layer. I'm letting it cur before sealing it matte varnish and adding the finally details.

Sewing my dress right now.

Their pretty crisp when printing and they know what level to print the dye at based on the fabric type so that they don't bleed to much. I gets tester for all the patterns I post and the only one the gets too soft is the Vola which is a sheer fabric anyways.

Thanks so much ani_bee! :)

I'm still where I was last post, well, I guess I finished going around the eyelets and dang they look good :) just haven't had the energy to finish the sleeves. If I don't finish them before I move, then it'll be another two weeks before I do.

Ani_BEE
08-16-2012, 02:14 PM
I ended up drawing the design on the bow last night (which took about 3 hours haha) instead of dong much sewing. I also sewed in the brown string on the collar into the seam instead of eyelets and opened up the collar shape a bit more. I Have to dye my linen tonight so i can wash it out properly over the weekend for the under shirt. (my apartment doesn't have laundry as a it small ^_^).

My dress however fit like a glove (which is hind of scary) I can only put it on from over head. My and my big hips.lol I put in an invisible zipper instead of looping it up (but since it can't get an invisible zipper foot for my model, the zipper doesn't look to invisible sadly.) lol

Once I finish hand sewing the arm hole sleeves and hem then It's onto the sleeve part.
Ill be happy to get to the undershirt is it will be loose fit. anyway.

I basically have to get everything done by next Thursday night. 1 week.... I wanted be be done sooner but all the waiting on thing definitely have put me back.

Elycium

It sounds like none of us have the energy to work on the sleeves, lol. That's where I'm still "stuck" at. I've been recovering from Pennsic for the past week, but now that my sewing room is in order again, Merida is at the top of my list. I'm making false puffing of material at the bend of the sleeves and at the shoulder that match my under-dress, as my actual under-dress sleeves are very close fitting. I'm debating on whether or not to stuff them. The Disney Parks' dresses are very obviously stuffed, but I'm not sure I want to be that over the top about it.

Ani_BEE
08-16-2012, 03:49 PM
I just spent way to much time fiddle with the fit of the dress. lol The sleeve I would not be surprised I can whip out in 4 hours actually even with the segments lined.

For the undershirt I'm planing toe sew on a gather strip of fabric so that it puff out once I put the dress one myself.

Yes they are super stuffed and the made the hole actually above the elbow probably for that reason as well which startled me when seeing it the first time.

Ani_BEE

Well still didn't do any sewing last night but I wasn't idle.

I try to dye a swatch of my linen in with Dylon Reindeer Beige dye but the colour turned out way to pink of a cream tone. So plan B. Tea dye! I will my kitchen sink with half boiled water and half hottest tape water and steeped 30 bag of tea (from a dollar store) and submerged the fabric in over night...It' still there however.

It not going to turn a cram shade but it will have the proper unbleached look to the linen.

I also finished my Bow! I was only going to paint the white sections last night but once the paint dried I went at it. wrapping the handle, adding the beads straps. wrapping the lover ended wrapping the stones and gluing them do and burning my left index finger when the bow slipped (ouch!), warping more string and beading the end (details that got lost in the movie poster crop teal, green, and brown beads strung on). Then warping the top and tying on the medallion then stringing the bow with the bungee cord!

This was midnight at that point so what do I do. See if the arrows are the right length and start to glue on the feathers! I tried my hand at string the feathers on my stage arrow and it doesn't look to bad.

But is there a way way to prevent the feathers grain from splitting? I have to do 4 more.

But I'm not a fan of the bungee cord mind you as it wobbles .... I'll probably untie it and try the paracord instead tonight.

Also my "Back Up" wig from Arda had been shipped and should be hear next week but my main one I order 4 weeks ago have not heard back from get as to weather it's in Canada yet.

The Arda one is Le Tigre in Pumpkin that if it come to it I will set in foam curlers. ^_^
Although the Luthien is longer by 4" the Le Tigre is a touch thicker.

Edit: So my NewLook wigs are in transit Finally!!!

If the absolute worst I have an extra Light Copper Red Luthien wig to style for Merida already in hand. I'll be Supar-Ginger.

The tea dye work TOO well that I had to stripe the colour back. But now I have creem colour linen instead of optical/bleach white. I just wish it would be a touch darker but I'm not messing around with the colour anymore at this point.

Finish bow, arrows and quiver.

I ended up finishing the dress the night before (6 hours to hand sew the hem on my dress >_<) leaving the con at midnight then spent the next 2 hours making a bow bag and packing to wake up at 7 am.

Yes particularly in the copywriter infringement photo. lol "Would you 7 Clans stop bickering... there be vampires afoot!"

Also yes a smart move to sew the puff for the elbows to the dress. It was giving me a head ache tiring to sew them to the underskirt and have the whole thing line up once I put the dress one. lol

Tomorrow will finally see the dress finished for me. All I have to do is finish the sleeves by sewing the strips to join the top half of the sleeve to the bottom half, and sew in the fake puffing, since I normally prefer a close-fitted sleeve for my chemises, as opposed to really billowy ones (really, fake puffing is the way to go 99% of the time with any sort of historical costume XD). Then its just down to tackling the wig.

finally started making a dent in the sleeves and finishing merida. i got the top edge done of the "undergarment" and one sleeve pinned and working on the little strips that connect the two parts of the sleeves. I also drew out a stencil for my buckle at work today on freezer paper. I am going to attempt to make it out of foam sheets as that will be light weight and wont weigh it down a ton. we shall see how it works out :)

I am working on my belt "buckle" right now. It's looking really great! I got all the pieces cut out and they are painted and drying until tomorrow when I'll give them their second coat and/or glue them together. Right now the dress is at a standstill though as my sewing machine broke last night :( I'm pretty upset about it. It's not worth taking it to get it fixed IMO, cuz itll probably cost more than its worth. Right now it makes a grinding noise down in the bobbin area and I already took it apart to see what was up but it wasn't anything I could see, but it does affect the machine enough to not sew right. I gotta see if I can borrow a machine till I can save up for a new one.

Ani_BEE

My old cast-iron machine I got for $25 was not worth the $90CAN tune up which is why I have the new one for $400 with a five year tune up plan. lol

My family says I would save up for an industrial sewing machine one. After i get my new camera it sound like a great idea.

I wish you luck jdoe7.

I'm starting on a Merida cosplay but it's slow going so far - I've the wig and the fabric/pattern for the dress, but I haven't got the time just yet to properly start.

I'm extremely excited to work on the bow, though, I think that may be my favorite part if I get it right.

Also considering blue contacts, since I have very hazel eyes - anyone have any brand recommendations?

I have the buckle/brooch thing almost done! all i need to do is glue the rhinestones i bought on and its finished! its not perfectly smooth but i like the way it looks. i just need a belt now....any ideas? i dont know if i should buy leather from tandy or make a pleather one.

oh! and update on the sewing machine. im gunna buy one of the cheaper but still good vikings after we pay rent on the 1st of october :) then ill be busy busy busy to get everything done for the con i have coming up and halloween!

What I did with mine was doing everything they tell you NOT to do with a wig. Fling it around. Tease it out. I spent about 30 minutes teasing mine out and making stabby motions with it on to pull it out and it's now three times the size it was. I could barely get the netting and bag back over it when I put it away.

Steadily working on my dress! The base is all but finished, except for some hemming issues, a zipper for the back, and some adjustments to the bust. I have a tremendous amount of extra cotton left over for the sleeves, and I plan to run to Joann's this weekend for the zipper and extra fabric for the undershirt.

I'm pleased with my wig so far - I wore it out to Ren Faire to break it in - but then I decided that it wasn't big enough (and began looking just puffy instead of curly) and bought a second of the same wig, and I plan to stack the two for extra volume.

Hoping to finish by Wednesday so I can wear it to school for Halloween, and the saving it for Katsucon!

One question: what do you guys think I should with the train? It was a part of the pattern I found so I wanted to leave it in until I got things together so I could figure out a unified shape later, but I'm getting fond of it. What do you think?

As soon as the movie comes out I'm going to set out making her epilogue dress with the design at the bottom. You mean gaps on the sleeves? I used the pattern and decided where those gaps would be based on my elbow and removed that section on the sleeve pattern leaving a hem of 3/8th of an inch.

Same with the top and adding the straps to them. My sleeves ended up being a lot of hand sewing as I worked with velveteen fabric but normally you finish them with a top stitch.

HI ALL! I'm Lorraine and I cosplay Merida! I am a natural red head, with natural curls so only seems appropriate and I think I may a little loner when it comes to that because the only Merida's I see use wigs. I do use extention pieces to make my hair longer, but the rest is all real I recently did a photoshoot for a NJ news paper called the Daily record, and was also the feature of an article on cosplay. It just makes me smile to know how far I've gone in such a short time!

Microsuede feels a lot like leather. So while the color looks good, the feel of the fabric probably wouldn't be right.

I usually see people use velvet or cotton blends. However, if you dig around, you can probably find linen or linen-look fabric. I used 100% linen for my dress and under-dress for historical accuracy and it feels amazing. And it's very "flowy".
