Costume: Relena's pink business suit from Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

As far as I was able to find when I researched it a two Novembers ago, no one had done this costume before. One reason why I chose it. ^_^ Especially since I really don't like wearing pink...

Anyway, I'd love to hear any critique! My grandmother and I spent quite a bit of time (spaning 6 months) making this. All I'm missing are the white boots that I cannot for the life of me find.

Picture Page: Here (http://ami_yuy0.tripod.com/cosplay/relenaEW.html)

I have much better bangs now (they are full across my forehead instead of one-sided -_-) and am growing my hair out. Look at my profile picture for the bangs...

Thanks!

Wow! I think that looks great ... I am a gigantanormous Gundam Wing fan, so this is great to see. (I'm actually looking into creating a Sally Po costume ... endless waltz era, I think ... Preventor Sally Po! ^^) But yeah, it's pink, you've got the frills in the collar, and the design on the jacket. It looks really good. As for the boots ... hrm ... I'd try waiting a little bit. Sometimes people don't put out white shoes until the summertime. In the mean while, check Mandees and lots of womens shoe warehouses (maybe you can find some white men's cowboy boots or something that aren't too far out ... you might be able to alter them). You might not even need boots. Try white flats and see how far the hem of the pants go ... might cover up enough so you look like you're wearing boots anyway!

Awesome costume. :)

Yah good job on it you look exactly like her. All you need now is a guy to play your heero, lol haha.

It's almost perfect o.o (other than the shoes, I can't keep white shoes clean anyways so I don't like using them >.<) You're pretty good at this sewing thing, unlike me XP All I can suggest is to do a little ironing on the collar (so kewl <3) and get a Heero plushie if you can't find someone. ^^

Maybe make it more tailored around the hips, and the pants more streamline and not so poofy around the crotch area. Also in some of the pictures the white thing around the collor seems to be coming off around the edges. Might want to appliqué that a little better.

Excellent choice of fabrics.

Arrow: Lol, yeah, but the thing is, I've been on the look-out for white boots since November 2002...I have thought about white flats, but it's hard to find even those with the style of toe and heel. I would rather not have a tall heel or have to alter anything.

ShuinLookalike: *bows* Thank you!

Misa-chan: For collar, see below. Lol, Heero...I tried to get my boyfriend to be Heero for me, but he has an unatural hatred of him, so that, eh, doesn't work. -_- Instead we go as Relena and Quatre. If I didn't already have a bear to carry around (see bottom) I might get a Heero plushie. ^_^

cutekawaii: *nods* I completely agree with you about the pants. It was a bit of a fight with my grandmother to even get them to be more fit around the whole leg. Perhaps someday I will attempt to take in the hips, but I have no idea really how, so, eh...
For the collar, it is faux felt (I think...) and I actually made it removeable so that I could clean the coat without it getting ruined (there are snaps on the underneath). I will look into how to hold it down more, that did bother me the whole time I wore it, expecially since in a suit jacket you can't reach up to adjust it that easily. -_-
Good old cotton knits... We chose the cotton for the sheer fact that I knew I was going to be wearing it in July and did not want to die of over-heating. Hence the tank-top on the undershirt. ^_^

Oh, and I don't have any pictures anywhere, but a few months ago I won and e-bay auction for a bear that looks exactly like the one Relena gets from Heero (if only a big lighter fur). And for the grand total of 99¢ + shipping! Now I just need to get a ribbon for it and take some pictures. ^_^ So I'll be carrying that around cons with me. ^^;;

But, it's not that big of a deal, Relena's just seems more tailored. There's a pic of you without the jacket, and the pants look poofy in the front. You can take them in in the inseam to fix that.

Have you considered sheet appliqué for the white collar?

I think the tank top undershirt was a good idea.

Lol, no mob, but I did have a girl muttering nasty things about me being in a group of gundam people for pictures. Lol, I shrugged it off. I actually thought that I'd get more than I did. ^_^

It's weird. So many people hate Relena ... but I dunno. When you read her Episode Zero Manga and you actually look at her as a person and not just someone who's looking for the affections of Heero Yuy, she's really a neat person. I mean, she's a diplomat at ... what, 16, 17 in EW? She kicks arse! Who wouldn't want to run the world at that age? Very smart, too. So what if she asks Heero to kill her all the time and mutters his name to empty dark rooms with windows? LOL

By the way, I think there are also two buttons on the breast(s?) of the jacket, but now I'm just being nit-picky. I also agree with the pants thing, though. They definitely look more fitted to Relena in the picture.

I like it very, very much. I've seen others do the costume, but none as well done as yours.
If you're really desperate for the boots, you can always just look for a pair of boots that have the style you want (ignore the color), hopefully cheap, and then paint them white. I'd suggest using acrylic paint since it's thick in texture, and would probably cover black with enough coats. There are a few down sides to this, one, I'm guessing on the paint choice, that's what I used for a pair of shoes I needed and so far I've had no problems, and two the paint may decide to crack on you, showing through. This is really if you're desperate, and since you've been looking since 2002 it might be the way to go.
Other then that I still love your costume, it's so exact! Carry that teddy with pride, you really do deserve it. ^-^

Is there a such thing as latex paint? ... something that'd move with you. Excellent idea about the painting, Saiyen! I never even though of it. :)

Arrow: Lol, you're exactly right, at first I saw her as annoying, but then I read the mangas and started to change my opinion. Um, and I'm not sure what buttons you're talking about, I think I have them all. ^^;;

SaiyenGirl613: You've seen it done before!! Could you tell me at what con or if you know of where I can find pics, that would be awesome. ^_^

Actually, my boyfriend suggested that I paint a pair of boots I already own, but eh, they're a little too nice for that. ^^;; I will probably consider that as a last ditch effort just before Anime Expo, who knows, perhaps I will find some this spring.

I think someone might have pointed these things out but just incase...

The only thing I see wrong with it is that the buttons on the jacket need to be pink or white and the shoes need to be white. If you really like the shoes you have now (I like them, the shape is really good for this costume) you can just spray paint them white. And buttons can be poped off and replaced! Those things aren't really a big deal but its easy to fix so you might as well. right? Maybe if you didnt want to even re-sew the bottons you could paint them as well. Other then those small things it really is a beautifuly done costume.

Actually the girl I saw was on cosplay.com, I think. I have no idea what her name was, but if you search for relena, you'll probably find the costume. (maybe it was you with an older picture? I dunno, but I swear that I saw another one SOMEWHERE)
Also, if you don't want to ruin the boots, you could make short boot covers out of lycra for them. This will sometimes look a bit tacky, but if you do it right, it should come out really nicely.

^^;; Well, the buttons are supposed to be at least blue or purple (See the first attached file which coincides with the second attached picture of my costume.) We went with navy blue to match the hair bow.

The shoes I mentioned in my original post and we've been discussing how to get them white. ^_^ I did choose those shoes though because we already had them and they are buisness shoes with the same shape to them. They're my moms though, so no paint. ^^;;

Hm...I did the search and all that came up were mine and other relena outfits.

*nods* Considered that to, and will possibly attempt it, but we'll see, that's another last minute option.

I have to ask how you did that super anime collar on the undershirt. It looks wonderful!

Suits are a pain in the butt, so I commend your work! It certainly wasn't an easy costume to attempt.

If you're looking to just touch up parts of this costume... The collar applique needs to be attached a little better. Most sewing books or sewing machine manuals come with stuff on applique work, and done well that looks very nice.
I do think the buttons need a change. They look very pastel in the reference pictures you provided. Of course, this is only if you're going for nit-picky accuracy; I doubt anyone who's not compared your costume to the reference pictures would notice. ^_^

If you ever decide to remake the costume... maybe some stretch suiting fabric? That would help with the unrealistic anime-fit of most costumes. I know Fabric.com has a whole lot of nice looking suiting fabrics with lots of stretch to 'em.

As for white shoes... Try some shoe magazines. I get a few (I have absurdly narrow feet, so I have to wear ugly shoes if they're going to fit. ^_^) and they usually have at least one pair of white heels. I'm not sure about boots... I haven't looked.

Great costume!

Looks good! I never disliked Relena, and that's a pretty snappy suit. I don't think anyone mentioned this, but it look like your pants are a smidge long, making them bunch up on your legs, taking away from the tailored look. Also, I'm going to be getting some boots from this site: http://www.electriqueboutique.com/index.asp They have pages full of all sorts of boots, and the prices aren't too bad!

Whee!

Thanks Ali & Kaine!

laerry: That is an awesome site to find shoes on. I actually did find a perfect pair (http://www.electriqueboutique.com/shop/proddetail.asp?id=JOYCE-W), but I found another pair on e-Bay for roughly the same price, and I won!

Right HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2888596719&category=45327&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1#ebayphotohosting). I do realize that they don't have white heels, but I will somehow whitewash them. The reference pictures were much better on the auction and I like being able to see more of the shoe when I'm buying something.

Anyway, they should fit, since the black boots I have now that are a similar cut are size 6 and these are 6.5. I hope they do. ^_^

Now, the only thing missing is to get a red/maroon ribbon for my bear and to do some touch-ups to the rest of it (collar, hem pants, grow hair out, find a Heero...).

There's stuff called Nu-life Color Spray, which I *think* is opaque, and pretty commonly available at shoe repair shops. You can also find it online (just google "nu-life color spray). I haven't used it yet, so no personal experience, but I'm planning to use it to turn some black shoes purple. Anyway, this stuff is supposed to be good to use on both real and synthetic leather, as well as other shoe surfaces, so it would probably work on those shoes you bought.

As for critique, I like the overall look, and I think you've done a good job. You might want to consider hemming the trousers a little shorter once you've settled for sure on boots - my openion (and this is only my opinion, to be used or ignored as you see fit) is that the trouser legs are a little to wrinkly and it distracts from the overall nice appearance.

But overall, good job! :bigtu:

I just completed a detail page for this costume. It has as many details about it as I can remember from along the way and also has pictures of the boots and the bear.

Oh I love the bear so much Ami, it's so cute! I also love your choice in boots too, those heals can be easily painted, no big deal with those. I love how the final touches of your costume are coming together, very nice. Can't wait to see the whole thing completely done! ^-^

Yep, dredging up an old thread.

Okay, I've got the white boots and the bear. The heels of the boots never got whitewashed, but I will someday (hey, my strategy is, "Why make it perfect the first time? Then you always have something new to fix for the next con!" *laughs* at least that's what I tell myself...). Nothing else was touched, but I think those alone really spruced up the costume along with longer hair (and a week after the con I had more bangs added so they're not so thin anymore).

What do you guys think? The pants are less "baggy" looking with the heels of the shoes, but I will have to buckle down and hem them eventually.
