This was my first picture in my Kenshin Costume. I didn't have ALL the right materials due to I spent most of my money and a bit of my parent's money on it and couldnt get anymore stuff. I'm only 14, so this was good for me. ^^x' ehe. Anyways, I know there are a few things making it worse. First, I need glasses 24/7 so they are in the pic. Second, the hair was bad.. Basically covered my head in fake hair, but now my hair is a bit longer, and I'm going to dye it red next week probobly, and add a pony tail attachment for the con in July I'm going to. Well, anyways, the kimono is the major thing, I just bought the hakam from my Martial Arts dojo I go to. So, just tell me what you think...

(Squints) (Squints some more) Bugger, I can't see the full thing. Post a larger picture of the full costume. The hakama may have been bought, but it's still needed for review. Let's see how the top matches the hakama.

As for the specs, there have been plenty of threads regarding cosplaying with glasses. Generally the general advice is to remove the glasses for the picture (unless the character wears glasses). My friend needs his glasses for all the time himself. But when getting his picture taken, he takes them off and pockets them (or hands it to me). He's not going to walk anywhere until the picture is taken so he doesn't have to worry about walking into anything. Once the shot is taken, he puts the glasses back on and it's business as usual. It can get tedious having to remove glasses for each picture but it's worth it for the quality of the costume picture.

*shrugs* thats the only pic I've got, sorry. I'll get a REALLY nice one in July though to show. By then I might have contacts, and the hair will be alot better. lol

The Samurai X costume for the top is Blue, not Red... (normally, I think...)

Samurai X = OVAs
Rurouni Kenshin = TV series

That's how it's usually referenced... but most people rather you put: "Rurouni Kenshin OVA" rather than "Samurai X" because most people think that "Samurai X" is such a lame title...

I can teel how hard it is to get those bangs, but I have 2 main drawbacks:

1. The sword. from what i can tell, it seems to be a thin plastic sword from a costume shop. There really is better stuff than this. If you go to a con, check the dealer's room for a bokken. most bokken have a sharp end on the reverse side, so you got most of the work cut out for ya. You could just paint it accordingly.

2. The glasses (what Valentine said). If you go to a con, try and get contacts first. It's okay. whenever i pose 4 pics at a con, I ALWAYS forget to move/hide my con badge. It's really annoying seeing it dangle in front of me in the leftover pics.

yes, those are 2 major things.. the glasses will probobly be gone by then (I hope) and the pose+sword.. *shudders* uhg.. lol Itll be alot better at the con.. trust me.. *shudders*.. anyways! Is this good for somebody who has had no experience whatsoever in costume making, etc?

The black shirt was because it was cold. This was a Halloween costume, and my 1st one too.. so.. ^^x' I'm planning on changing a bit for the Con...

These are the things I notice: The white and red/blue layers of kimono are two separate pieces (kimono and juban). It looks as though you've made it as a single red layer with white trim. Also, it looks as though the sleeves are narrow and straight (like a karate gi); a traditional kimono has square sleeves sewn closed all the way around, except for the wrist opening. If you are trying to go for an authentic Meiji/traditional look, you might want to check out some authentic kimono from the period and maybe "The Book of Kimono" by Norio Yamanaka, one of the few kimono books available in English; it's mostly for women but does touch on men's clothing.

I gave your costume a "C." It's not bad at all for a first costume, though. Since you're going to fix the hair, the only thing I suggest is, make the white layer look like it's a separate layer, instead of trim.
I intend on making a Kenshin costume sometime soon ^_^. I always like to see how other people portray the character before I start, so I can get some ideas on making the costume. Anyway, good luck on your future costumes, and I hope the constructive criticism was able to help :) .

here are my tips...

go out and to a martial arts store and ask if they have any white hakamas.
then ask if they have any red gi's and if they have white gi's if they have all three buy them.. if not order them or make them.... then get yourself a decent red wig and some red and black eyeliner for the scar and eye brows... Get a decent plastic sword fill it with sand or something to give it the weight affect and spray paint it.... and ask your mom or a freind thats a girl to do your hair for the wig... you can buy a pair of sandles like his at a thrift store for really cheap... then all you need is an hour or so to do the scar because your going to want to wash it off try it a different way do different techniques and most of all have fun!!

I know most of this from previos expereince from helping with a kenshin costume
