That was / is such a pain in the ass to try to beat, but you still loved playing it?

Mine has to be Blaster Master for NES. :)

LOL, BATTLETOADS for the NES! I sucked so badly, but I just kept plugging away...

Super Marios Brothers on NES. I beat the first round a few times (8-4). I tried playing it again on the next level, but I kept on dying.

UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A START

By the way, the first video game that game me a big sense of satisfaction when I beat it was (the original) Castlevania. Man that sucker was hard!

Beyond the Beyond.
(The first RPG available on the PSX)

It drove me beyond insanity... to something I had never done before... detailed map-drawing. This one dungeons was many floors high and had sandtraps in the floor (which was all SAND, no tiles to count or anything) that were invisible and sent you back to the ENTRANCE.

One step right, two steps forward... Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Right now it's DDR. I WILL DO MANIAC ONE DAY!!! I SWEAR UPON MY FATHER'S GRAVE!!!!!

Back in the day, it was Super Contra. I beat that game once, and smiled when I did it.

Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels (D-4 = Broken Controller)
Blaster Master
Jet Set Radio
Castlevania III
Super Castlevania IV
Sonic 2

I really like playing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer game, but some of the higher levels in it are really hard. (For me, anyway...I don't really play all that many games so it's not really all that hard to make a game hard for me.

Haha, aw Rosiel :P
A friend of mine has vented to me about Beyond the Beyond.
It was almost the exact same reaction.

As for me, Phantasy Star's big dungeons were annoying. It took me a few years to finish, playing off and on when I had time.

Tenjou
11-11-2002, 01:29 PM
Oooh DDR is annoying. I tried it at Wal Mart, and I got many stares from my screaming at a small TV screen.

Once, I remember that game. The first chance I got after so many years was to hack the hell out of it an screamed mockingly at all the bosses. (Yes, I'm the vengeful type. After ten years....)

But that's a great game thought. How are the sequels?

For me, Chrono Trigger (getting all the endings, not to mention stuff like ozzie pants and gold stud) and Tales of Phantasia (Mecha Blade!!! Ya-ya!!!)

Sonic & Knuckles

that game pissed me off so much

you couldn't save, and when you ran out of lives you have to start all over again. Old Sonic game pissed me off, becuase it seems like the very last levels of everyone goes nowhere. I remember one of the last levels in sonic 2, i couldn't find the damn exit.

BM2 for Genesis was okay. Still mad that BM3 never made it to Super NES. And I haven't played the PS version yet.

Beyond the Beyond was a pain in the ass... but, for me, it was agony to play.

Hardest game I didn't completely hate and managed to finish: Phantasy Star 2. Doing those dungeons without maps is IMPOSSIBLE. They are large and the monsters are ridiculously powerful. Oh my gosh.

PS1 receives an honorable mention. I didn't ever complete it... but the INVISIBLE TRAP DOORS... >.< Characters which miss randomly, even at the end of the game. Odin! SO useless. Only being able to heal inside/outside of battle! AAAAAAARGH!!! Limited inventory slots!

Sami, Battletoads was great! I remember wasting soooo much time on that game! Fun!! XD

Let's add TMNT in there too.

[ Gaah, I remeber that! Stupid shuriken-throwing turtles....it was 8-3 that drove me crazy ]

Yeah, that was a pretty hard one to beat. The trick is, you try to get enough power-ups so they can buy you time. But, if you die, then you're small again. ^^

Tricky Kick for the TG-16... I got that game on the day it was released and still haven't beaten it and that was like 10 years ago.

It has 140 or so levels and have only beaten 68 of them.

I don't know anyone who has beaten it.

FRom,
Joe

Isn't this about games that are hard, that we like? It sounds like some of you don't like the games you are mentioning.

Gradius III on Arcade settings. Very fun until you die. I refuse to use the cheat codes on that game either, because they make it very eassy.

Actually, I do use one of the cheat codes sometimes (Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A). Can you guess what it does?

Final Fantasy II (or IV, as it's called in Japan) was a great, fun challenge. Considering it was my first real RPG, I had a really tough time. Plus, I really got involved in the story. I mean, REALLY involved. (The Package burned the whole village down?! WHAT THE...)

I also liked Little Nemo in Dream Land. That was such a great and challenging game. It deserved more attention than it got.

I totally forgot about that game. It was a great and hard experience, I only finished it once, but I had such a feeling of accomplishment by doing it.

To some people it is hard. :)

I can smoke anyone in Gradius 3 on any level seeting. :D I love that game!

And doing that code will get you powerups and then you explode once you unpause.

Same goes for the speed bike level on Battletoads.

I remember when games on the NES would not work for whatever reason, we'd take them out and BLOW on the connector. I have no idea who decided that would accomplish anything, but everyone I knew used to do it. I had friends who would swear up and down that blowing on the games removed dust particles or whatnot and made the games work properly.

When I was in college, we were once trying to get a PSX rental game to work but it wouldn't, so I took it out and blew on the CD jokingly. Everyone in the room started laughing because all of them had grown up blowing on faulty NES games as well.

Maybe I should use that technique as part of my server troubleshooting. Hmm, can't find working video drivers? Have you taken the card out of the slot and blown on it yet?

psyth3: Thank you. There are better ways now to make sure that doesn't happen. ;)

Hungryjack: I am a Networking major... I know your pain on server/workstation troubleshooting. Speaking of NES pains, I remember we used to put the games in the freezer for 2 minutes and then put it in... And they worked! :D

Mikagami: I got past that after playing the game 40 times... I just can't get through the sewers in level 3. >_<

Dude, when that happened to my mom she freggin FLIPPED. She almost broke the Nintendo at 1am when she saw her game was erased...she bitched about it for days while she replayed what she had done...

Iori E

Hungryjack: Actually, I heard blowing on the connectors damages the game in the long run, even though it might help it work better for a while. Cleaning the connectors with the cleaning solution was much better.

Of course, I forgot where I heard this from. I blew on the connectors, too.

Yay! A fellow Gradius player! Hehehe, I love that cheat code, especially when other players forget about it:
"Do you remember that old Konami cheat code?"
"Yah, but I'm not going to tell you!"
"Oh common!"
"Ok fine. up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a."
"Oh that's right! I remember now!"
*Kaboom!* hehehe

Yah, Gradius is pretty eassy once you get all the powerups. That's why I don't use the cheat codes. It makes it difficult if you die on a high stage. I can beat it fast if I don't die all the way through.

Nope. Never saw the point in dancing games. Dancing for real is more fun, I think, but I don't dance that often.

All I can say is Jet Force Gemini. The game was pretty easy, but then theres the part where you have to rescue EVERY DAMN TRIBAL in the game. I got so close to doing it, but those stupid little things are so fun to blow up, I just couldn't accomplish it!

Curse my evilness and being easily entertained by decapitating and splattering cute fuzzy animals all over the place! *sigh*

Oh, and battletoads... I used to spend hours on end playing that, and I could never get passed the speedbike part... BUT! One day I was thinking, "Hey, its been a while since I've played, and now I have fierce reaction time and video game skillz, so I played, and after many many times... I BEAT, YES, I REPEAT, I BEAT THE SPEEDBIKE PART! My best friend was like "OMFG YOU DID IT AFTER LIKE 7 YEARS YOU DID IT!" LOL! Then I got to the next level and I had one life and then I died.
We got alot less excited after that part. lol.

My oldschool game that I loved but could never get very far in.... The Guardian Legend. ^^

DDRness: Keep workin' on it, Studmaster, you'll make Maniac eventually ^^
Two Gradius tracks? I only know of Gradiusic Cyber (AMD G3 mix)... cuz it's feat. djTAKA, and I loves me djTAKA! I guess the other one is Burning Heat (3-Option mix)? I always knew that sounded familiar...

DJ(SiC): Yeah, that was the problem with Sonic & Knuckles, not being able to save... which is why you gotta love adding on Sonic 3. Yes... Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the best sonic game to date @_@
