Any of you read a Manga that's good but hasn't become popular yet? ie, no anime, not a lot of hype? Mention it here!!! I was introduced to Naruto, Get Backers, (I was going to mention Hikaru no Go and GTO, until I found out about the anime...), Black cat (ehh, average. I'll have too see where they take the story.), Family Compo (Go! Go! Mr. Hojo!) and Angel Heart (See previous statment.)

Actually isn't Get Backers an anime now?
I remember watching an episode- it's got Nobutoshi Hayashi and Morukobou Shoutarou as the main character voices! cool!

Anyway there's a short manga called Sakuratetsu Taiwahen which is quite comedic for a good laugh! and Zombie Powder that's good too sort of black version of Trigun or something!

Riot? Satoshi Shiki, right? I've read one volume but that was ages ago.

I've been a big fan of BLAME! and recently, I picked up Noise & Naruto. Blade of the Immortal is one of my favorites but it still hasn't caught on here in America. I'm waiting for Bleach to come in the mail. ;_;

Alichino: pretty but slightly boring. The artwork is amazing but the storyline is a bit of a bore. Still waiting for the fourth volume to come out but it doesn't look like she'll release it any time soon.

Dare I say Clover? I don't think I really even own any manga that couldn't be classified as "popular".

Kenshin Ken
11-11-2002, 04:44 PM
Yes that's it ^^. I read both volumes.. but hte publisher in america didn't bother to release the last and 3rd volume because of ..well unpopularity ^^;; and it's all the way in japan and it it's never gonna get translated!! ^^;;

Get backers is an anime now? Wow... that's extremely hard to animate. I didn't think anyone else knows about Zombie Powder... Where else can you see a sword-chainsaw? :p

Blade of the Immortal, an award-winning manga in Japan, practically unknown here. It's a very interesting read, and with beautiful art. The translators even went through the trouble of not mirror-imaging the artwork, which usually happens manga is translated in the US ( with the exception of Tokyopops "100% Authentic Manga brand )

I instantly fell in love wit that sword-chainsaw thing...why else would i have instantly bought it..aside from the cute (yes she's also quite well endowed) lady that uses a camera tripod as a weapon? Ya know it would be great to cosplay Akatabi Gamma..but my body type suits John Elwood Shepherd better..hmm...i think there's also a fan translation somewhere on Toriyamaworld...but I haven't checked it out yet!

Angel/Dust by Aoi Nanase

Published in Newtype Magazine a2 years ago. I have the tankoubon of it.

She's also the fan artist for Nakoruru...and she's working on the sequel for Angel/Dust at the moment, called Angel/Dust Neo

I have taken up Mars, which is really a romance (totally not me!) But I have to say, it keeps me entertained.

Then if you go with the strict japanese, I would say Battle Athletes. It is majorly entertaining, that is, if you can get ahold of the rare 4th volume!

It wasn't nearly as cool as the game, nor did it really match the characters/plot, but I did like the art in the Koudelka manga. It's a total of 3 volumes.

Also, the Valkyrie Profile manga has really nice art, and for those of you that just can't get the "A" ending, it basically covers that part of the story. ^^;;; Only 2 volumes...

Appare Jipangu! is one of Watase Yuu's (Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres) least-known works, but I enjoy it immensely... it makes little or no sense, really, but it's hysterically funny. It's only on volume 2 though, and it looks like she abandoned the series. -.-

DAHLIA is a one-shot manga by Kakinouichi Narumi (Vampire Princess Miyu, Vampire Yui). For anyone who likes Miyu, Dahlia is basically Miyu but thirty times cooler and fifty times bloodier. :D

I'm not sure how popular Angel/Dust is, but it's a neat one-shot by Aoi Nanase (character designer for the Samurai Spirits 2 OVA). Not a terribly deep plot, but the art is pretty and it's got some cute shoujo-ai elements.

One of the best comics I have ever read has to be the manga Parasyte by Hitosi Iwaaki. It's an award winning comic from Japan but most peole in the U.S. have never heard of it.

I highly recomend it.

Almost no one seems to have heard of Chrno Crusade. One of my faves. ^^ It doesn't have an anime. Though I should say "yet", because there's going to be a DNAngel anime now! *rejoices*

I haven't much been able to find manga that NO ONE'S heard of, lol. Not that I mind, cause it's great finding other fans. Blame! (and Noise) I think, will soon have more fame. I like the Marie and Elie's Atelier manga (I don't know if the game is based off it, or vice-versa) . . . +Anima isn't that well known, and pretty cute. Devil x Devil (Devil and Devil) is a manga that really surprised me, it's funny and I enjoy the storyline and characters.

I did read the Hellsing manga (well, some of it) before I knew there was an anime, and certainly before anyone I talked to knew what the heck it was. Then they come back talking about this new anime . . . :P lol

I've been reading The Big O manga before they decided to translate it.
I also have Master of Mosquiton.
Two of my friends have some Trigun so I've read those.
One of those friends has Saiyuki Manga so I've gone through those too.

I have a few others but I forgot what they were called.

I'll be back later.......:)

I highly recommend Shadow Star. It's a slow moving story and on the surface looks silly, but it's actually quite deep and deals with some emotional issues. There is a lot of mystery in it and even in the 3 books published in the US so far very little has been revealed but a lot of character dev. I really think you guys should check it out. It's distributed by Dark Horse.

Precious Katte ni Kaizou~~ I am obsessed with this comic, but hardly anyone else is into it, except the few people who were reading it on www.mangascreener.com But the comic has changed so much since the first volumes, no one every knows what I'm talking about when I bring it up *sobs*
But its the most hillarious comic!! XD I always hear it compared to Ping Pong Club, but I never saw that so I can't say, but I know they can both be very gross ^_^ In Katte ni Kaizou, its extremely crazy and gross and freaky, but it makes you go "Ahh I know someone just like that!!" And it always is full of references to other comics and anime, there was even a chapter making fun of the editing of anime in the USA, lol~

Also any manga by Conami Shoko!! She makes the most wonderful shoujo manga, and no one knows her *o* She can do really hillarious slapstick humor but also quiet and emotional love stories. And her art is sooo good~~~~ *o*

Also, it's popular in Japan, but not really in the USA (far as I know ^_^) Ahiru no Oujisama, the story of a nerdy little boy who gets hit by a car and turned into a super cool bishounen~~!! Ah it is sooo funny, and its the #1 shoujo manga boys want to read.. Because its soooo funny!!!! XD

Also, its only got a couple volumes out, but Fun Fun Factory is the cutest comic~~ (and by the creator of Ecoko, yaaaay) I want to eat the curse a la mode~~ Ahahaha~~

Oh yeah, I read the first volume of Black Cat... It seems sort of like a plainer Trigun.. The main guy was cool, but it was a little hard for me to get into the story. I guess maybe it gets better as it goes on?

But I do mostly read popular comics ^_^ In English I get Peach Girl and Para Kiss and I also read HanaKimi, CLAMP's stuff, Yami no Matsuei, ect etc.. There is just too much good stuff!!!!!! XD

I want to read more Naruto and some Getbackers too.... *o* Need.. money...~~

Paradise Kiss was printed in the US by Tokyopop, and I don't know how popular it is, but it seems not many people know about it.

But I've read all the volumes they have out and it's really cute...although it's pretty lovey dovey. But they've got a crossdresser! Haha ^_^ And it gets a little explicit at some points O_o Heehee.

it's a Manga about fashion....there are some really cool ideas for cosplay in there, but if you did cosplay an outfit from it, it might be hard to have recognized ^_^*

The Mangas done by Kouyu Shurei are fantastic. Her most popular is "Alichino". People compare it to Anne Rice's "Interview with the Vampire" plot. She also made some other gothic mangas. To see more images, please visit this link:

http://alichino.free.fr

It's in french and I don't understand french too, but it's very easy to navigate.

The costumes are fantastic. It reminds me so much of an eclectic mix of Medieval, Renaissance, and 18th century fashion. :)

Well, Conami Shoko has manga with a bunch of publishers, but most of her stuff came out in Asuka or Wings. If you are looking for her funny stuff, check out Yo no Hana Tsubame and Arashi wo Yobu Otoko from Asuka, and Futsu no Renai from HanaYume. As far as serious, check out Chiheisen no Hoshi & Kamakiri from Asuka-CL and Anghel Blood.. Um, I think that was from Wings. They're all good though X3 The art on some of her earlier stuff can be a little tough to get used to, but its really good in all the comics I mentioned~ (Try www.japan-manga.jp for her stuff, their search is messed up, so search "tsubame" then click on her name by Yo no Hana Tsubame ^_^;)
The first comic of hers I read was Yo no Hana Tsubame, which is sooo funny, its about an OL named Chiroru who wakes up one morning to find out she got drunk the night before and got engaed to and pregnated by a 14 year old boy idol from a local bath house!! lol!! And it just gets funnier from there ^_^ Her serious stuff is really good too though @_@

Ahiru no Oujisama is from Asuka too, and the same author put out Yamada Tarou Monogatari which is supposed to be really funny, about a really poor guy posing as rich to go to a fancy school, but I never read it ToT And she has a new one to.. Kanojo to XXX or something, lol ^-^

FunFun Factory was from LaLa I believe, there is even an English fansite for it, check out www.piffleprincess.com X3

Good luck on finding these comics, I hope they will get more fans in the USA, cause they are all really good ToT

Also you like Kaizou!!!! Yaaay~ XD I made Umi's curse doll, and I'm sending print club photos of me with it into Torauma Walker XD I don't have volume 18 yet though ToT But yeah, its like the funniest comic ever...!!!!!! X3

Good luck finding the other comics!!! If animaxis.com ever gets back up, you'll probably be able to find most of em there.

Oh yeah Gohou Drug is awesome too XD But there's only 2 volumes out... *dies* I want to know the characer's mysteries ~o~ Rikuou and Kazahaya are so cool though~ sure is a lot of service in that comic, though, lol ^-^

Check out Hanazakari no Kimitachi he too, if you haven't X3 I didn't mention it before since its a little popular, but its great, and its from.. Uh HanaYume I'm pretty sure.

I'm working on a manga review page to go into better detail about this stuff, lol, just too buzy @_@

Ahh wrote too much @_@

I know about Riot, A friend of mine reconmended it to me about 2 years ago and it sounds pretty cool Anyone here heard of a manga called Lumen Lunae? It looks really cool and it's yaoi but I've only seen about 4 sites on the web that know what it is and even then they're breif. The Flame of Recca manga also isn't very popular here even though it's by far one the most shibby series I've ever seen

I really enjoyed Wish :)

My absolute favorite manga is "Kare Made Rabu KM" though. It currently runs in Margaret like Hana Yori Dango. I love that series!! It's a really sweet manga :) (done by a mangaka that originally did ladies comics and also illustrates for yaoi/shounen ai novels too! ^___^)

Wish? Yeah, I have it. It's one of the better post-rayearth mangas in my opinion. Just keep in mind, Amber, was it? Doesn't have a real gender. I couldn't tell if it was a she or he at first. >.<

Oh, be sure to read the little author/character comics afterwards. they're still my fave parts of that comic. XD

Anyone got their hands on SaiKano Manga yet? I was wonder how long it is right now.

I totally *love* MPD Psycho! The art is amazing (it's drawn by Sho-u Tajima) and is very detailed, but not your traditional anime style with the large eyes and tiny noses. The story is really unique too! (action/suspence-ish) As far as I know, it's somewhat popular in Japan (there's the comic, and some written stories that ran in Newtype and a live-action tv series adapted from it)

I'm not sure if it would ever be picked up in North America, but if it did it would probably be for over 18... There's no explicit sex in it, but it's bloodier than most manga (especially because the style is so realistic), and has a lot of nudity (I think it's the only non-hentai manga out there were you actually see a naked man! ^^;;)

Lil Dreamer

my fave, obscure and only manga i read is Blade of the Immortal.. for the love of god... everyone should read this manga. it's the mot intricately woven, funny and tragic story ever written IMO.
