View Full Version : Merida's bow and arrows

Everything else about Merida seems to be falling in place. I even found little ankle boots close to what she wears with her green dress.

But I'm having a hard time finding her darned bow and arrows! The official Disney ones are sized for kids. But the ones I've found that are adult-sized are often real ones meant for competition or hunting and cost $TEXAS.

I found a few that look close and are affordable, so help me decide which to look harder at, fellow Brave cosplayers!

Here's a reference pic: http://pixartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Brave-Archery-Merida.jpg

And here's the three possibles:

The Katniss Deluxe isn't the right shape so I wouldn't go that route.

The Bear Archery seems the closest due to the "handle" but the other one has a more dramatic curve in the wood on the bow...like Meridas.

Id say choose between those two, Bear Archery may be the best. Or you can try making it yourself :)

I don't have much experience making props, let alone from scratch. So I'm planning on using one of these as a base and either re-bending the bow into the right shape or whittling/sanding down the parts that I don't need and build up the parts I do need with paper clay (like the medallions on the ends). I'm leaning toward the third one because it looks like it would be the easiest to modify.

Any tips on modifying or making one would be welcome, too!

Recurve/ Horsebow bow are hard to make and also hard to find. Mine made out of a PVC pipe the was first form by someone else then I reshaped it to Merida shape.

I found this seller in my searches for more accurate versions or her base bows. Didn't get them because the shipping and customs would be a nightmare to deal with coming into Canada on this.

I also spend about 4 months hunting on ebay and didn't get one that would work for her either but you can fin Asian horsebows on ebay if your not going for 100% accuracy.

Ooh! $100 is a little steep, but the squire bow is almost perfect.

Keep the suggestions coming, guys!

I was about to suggest this (http://www.bytheswordinc.com/p-2108-basic-horse-bow-bhb.aspx) but the one from medival collectibles above is nearly perfect.
