After a lot of hesitation and thinking on my part I have decided to go to Anime Matsuri alone :woah: My brother bailed out on me today and none of my friends are into anime so I don't have much options available to me:lost: Now, I am completely new to this, I've never been to an anime con before so this will be my first!:mfg: Considering, I'm quite shy and a girl that will be on her own during the con, is it a good idea to just give it a try and go by myself? I also won't be cosplaying since I'm a noob to the whole anime con experience, will that make me stick out like a sore thumb? :drunk:

not everyone is going to cosplay. My anime group that I run called Otaku Bento(FB group) is going and we have a meetup during the con too. You are more than welcome to join us and maybe make a friend or two who is into anime.

I think its usually best to try and go with someone. Because you are a girl, it can sometimes be dangerous and best to have someone with you.

I agree with that last part, but I'm a bit of a hypocrite about it because I also go to conventions alone when I have no one else to join me.

So a few tips to help! Always carry your cell phone and have it charged. You never know when you might need to call someone for help.

Try not to walk alone late at night when others are not around. It can make you an easy target for trouble. If you're worried, ask con security if they can escort you to your hotel/car/ride.

If someone is bothering you, never be afraid to stand up for yourself. Tell them exactly that, they are bothering you or making you feel uncomfortable and then leave. If they follow, seek out security.

It can be hard when you're shy, but enjoy the panels, photo shoots, and other events. They're all good ways to make a new friend.

Bring a camera if you have one! Taking pictures of all the cosplays can be fun and it's another good way you can talk with people.

And don't worry about the lack of cosplay. Not everyone does it. =) You can always try again next time if it looks like fun!

Thanks for the invite :) I'll definitely look into your anime group page on fb. Yeah, your last statement is very true and well...I admit that the thought of having company sounds a lot more comforting than being completely alone in a new place.

Yes, actually! I usually just meld right into others groups and make new friends. I personally go to photoshoots for the cosplay I'm wearing and it just happens. I also go to other shoots just because I like the series. It's easy because chances are if someone is wearing, say, a Final Fantasy cosplay.. then they like Final Fantasy!

Creeps and stalkers? I'll admit it, yes. I'm a bit on the taller/older side, but still get them now and again. When I was younger, I was too afraid to say no or seek out help. I was really shy and didn't know what to do. But no is a great word. Never stay anywhere or with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable. It can be hard at first to stand your ground, but no one has the right to make you feel uncomfortable.

They usually give up easily, too. Very very rarely one will keep trying, but for the most part they are looking for "easy prey" as sick as that is to say.

Don't let to whole idea of the bad ruin the good though! Cons can be so much fun. You're completely surrounded by like minded people who enjoy the same things you do! There's so much to see and do, there's something for everyone.
