I don't think it's a con exactly - I think it's a cross between a fan gathering ("informal programming") and a scholarly conference ("formal programming"). I see among other things a Call for Papers on the site, which is how academic conferences solicit scholarly writing. As for the fees, I would bet Disney World isn't a cheap place to run a symposium.

Definitely not my cup of tea in any case.

$100.00 approx to pre-register?!?!?!?!? O_oo_O

Good Frickin God, that's just too much for ANY convention! Now I don't feel bad about spending 45 for Katsucon.

Anime cons are different because we cover all genres of the interest.. Harry Potter is one thing. ^^; It isn't a fantasy book con -- our equivalent would be "Ranma Con" or something, y'know?

Anyway... Yeah. No interest here. :P

I wonder how many people will actually attend this...

Babbit_Chan

Tenjou: A LOT of Harry Potter obssessees - expect a lot of parents and their children turnout apart from the adults.

I can address this one a little bit, as I'm most likely going.

HP Fandom on line is a pretty big deal. Lots of people write fan fiction, and participate. It's a huge fandom. Heck, it's my other fandom. :) You all thought my other fandom was a Porsche, I know...

Anyway, here's the deal on Nimbus. The organizers are trying to get professors to present academic papers on Harry Potter. Several of us professor types do. I just presented one in exotic Wisconsin in October, and I hope to present a paper related to that one AND one on online writing workshops at the convention. Pricey? Yes. But at most conventions like this one, your college pays for you to go if you present. This is pretty much the cost for most professional type conferences.

The other side of the conference is a fan gathering, and I can't defend the price for that. I can only say that such high prices can be found at SF conventions (World Con regularly, for example.) I have also gone to a Space:1999 convention that ran about this price.

I guess anime fans are pretty darned lucky at the (comparatively) cheap prices of anime conventions.

As for me, I'll go if the college pays. I wouldn't say no to a weekend at Disney talking about Harry Potter and wearing my Ravenclaw suit. I can also cart Nemo (my husband) along, and we get a half price vacation at Disney.

If you like Harry Potter fan fiction, and you have cash, you should also check it out.

Long winded enough,
Grandis

If I could go, I would love to ^_^; I'd... not wash my hair for a few days and cosplay as Snape @_@;; My hair can be like his length/color wise lol. It would be pretty cool to go to a HP con but those admission prices are a bit too high and I live quite far from Orlando.

You know what a continental breakfast is, right? It's a donut and coffee/orange juice. I certainly wouldnt pay that much for admission to a con when I can get that at any motel 6 in the country for free. =P

This is the part that gets me :

Q: Will there be a costume contest?
A: For legal reasons, there won't be an official contest, but you are free to wear costumes if you so desire.

Legal Reasons? What do they mean, do cosplay organizers have to get permission from places to have us up on stage dressed as Sailor Senshi or whatever? I'm just curious as to what legal reasons would preclude a costume contest.

LMAO, of COURSE I know what a continental breakfast is, but that really shouldn't be included in the price anyways :P The Sunday brunch sounds nice though if it is all out fancy shmancy ;)

But otherwise, I wouldn't spend my own money to go :P

I always thought it would be cool to have a Harry Potter convention. But it's way too far and expensive for me.

The thing is, J.K. Rowling hates merchandise from her books and just barely agreed to allowing merchandising... so... She'd hate a costume contest, I'm sure. X_X

I'd go if it were closer, but I'm as far away from Florida as you can be within the US. :P Stupid Washington!

It seems expensive, but it's kind of academic it seems, and not just for fans. Other conventions of acedemic or historical nature that I have heard of, IE. theatre preservation convention, Lewis Carroll society & other authors, Barbie Collectors, etc. usually run about this price or more. I hope anime cons never get that expensive! ^_^ It looks interesting, I'd probably go if it wasn't so $$ and in Florida.

I wish I lived in Washington... ._. Sigh.
