Hey everyone,

This is to inform anyone living in San Francisco/ Bay Area of a special event next week. At my work place, the SONY Metreon in downtown San Francisco, CA, is having a pre-launch sale of Final Fantasy XI inside the Playstation Store on Monday, March 22nd. It starts at 8pm, and you get to try out the game, and then at 12:01am, you can buy the game/hard-drive at that time. The big news for cosplayers is that they'll be having a COSPLAY CONTEST, and the TOP-2 cosplayers will get "special prizes" I don't know what that is, but I'm sure it'll be gooood. :D I asked, and the contest should begin around 10pm or so. The cosplay costumes don't HAVE to be from FFXI, so cosplay from whichever Final Fantasy game you wish: I-3, FFIV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, Tactics, Tactics Advance, & Crystal Chronicles. Does the movie "Spirits Within" count? heehee)

Since I work at the Metreon, I can ask for more info during the days I'm there (M-F) and so if you have any Questions you can ask me to find out, or else you can call the Playstation store at (415) 369-6040. Stuff like weapon-policy, stuff to do besides playing the game, etc. So the remaining days this week (W-FR) I'll find out more info and post it here.

I myself will be going, just to see who might be going and plans to cosplay (besides us members of c.com, there might be other people who don't know about this site, but cosplay FF-characters and DO know about the event at the PS-store) so this would be a good way to get cosplayers together for pictures. I'm NOT going to buy the game, since I no longer have a PS2 (for now) so I'm there for cosplayer pictures. I'm up for doing photoshoots of solo and group cosplayers for a few hours. :bigtu:

So here's the general info so-far:

PLACE: Playstation Store at the Sony Metreon, 101 4th St. San Francisco, CA 94103
DATE: Monday, March 22nd, 2004
TIME: 8PM to 2AM (Play the game starting at 8pm, Cosplay Contest at 10pm (tentative), and purchase the game (limited quantities!) from 12:01am-2am)

Since SQUARE representatives WILL be there and running the show, it will be quite a BIG turn-out, so please get there early as people will be lining-up as early as 3pm or maybe sooner!

So I hope to see everyone who can make it to the event, and so be sure to be there with your fave or best Final Fantasy costume, and good luck! :skidude2:

Sounds cool. Would you mind asking them if they have a problem with prop weapons?

Let us know if you hear any other news... that 10pm start time is pretty late, but I guess it makes sense since they need to keep people entertained till the 12am sale time.

positive: I will ask tomorrow for more details regarding weapons. Yeah, 10pm is late for them to do stuff, and as far as I know, the only events will be taking place inside the PS-store and possibly the area on the side of the building where they close off to let people play the game.. Nowhere else are they scheduled to have any other events. Back in February, when Jet Li was here for the release of "Rise To Honor", it was pretty hectic, and they let people go up to the 3rd floor and play the game on the giant IMAX screen. But no word yet about if they plan to do the same for FFXI..

Hey everyone,

Well, I went to the Playstation store today and inquired more about the event, especially about the cosplay contest. From my friends whom I talked to, and who KNEW about some of the details for it told me this:

They said to be there around 8pm, in costume, and the Square people will keep an eye as more people show up, and either before or at 10pm, they'll start having the contest. I offered to help gather cosplayers when it was close to the gathering, and the PSstore crew said that maybe by that Monday they'll have more info about the schedule (including a time-chart showing what time everything will be happening) But right now it's like I said yesterday: 8-10pm: try the game, 10-??: cosplay contest, and 12:01am-2am: buy the game. (I'll be on way home before the game goes on sale, although after getting a special pamphlet about FFXI, I'm sooo tempted in getting it now..)

WEAPONS-POLICY: They said that weapons WILL be allowed, but no live-steel or gun-replicas will be allowed. (So all Irvine cosplayers should leave their rifles at home..) As for other weapons made of wood, foam-board, cardboard, or tin-foil, they stressed that to make sure there are NO SHARP EDGES or POINTS on the swords or gunblades you might be bringing. So anyone bringing those, or Rikku or Yunnie's Thief Blades, PLEASE try to cover the tips (corks, tape, styrofoam, etc.) to make sure you don't get in trouble. I told them that all my friends whom I know (that would be most of the c.com members who are going to this) would be mature and courteous to everyone at the event, that they wouldn't be swinging their weapons around carelessly or attempt to pretend to attack anyone. (I trust everyone to abide by this rule) So be smart when you bring a FF-weapon, to make sure it's always in your possession, and not to brandish it at anyone, even for pics. Security WILL be heavy at this event, and like the Metreon Anime Festival back in October 2003, they will be keeping an eye on us cosplayers..

I got a lot of flyers for the event, and FFXI pamphlets, and will be placing them on a table at Reccacon this weekend, so pick one up if you want an official "invitation" and a cool souveneir book. Hopefully we won't be too tired out from Reccacon to make it for this.

I'll post more tomorrow, so see everyone who can make it on Monday! ;)

Most of the info is here, Sohjiro. I've explained everything of what I know and asked about at work regarding the event. If there's any Q's you have, post them here so that in case if other people want to be informed also, they'll find out as well. :)

To the people who went to this event, was their even one FFXI cosplayer there? Cause I checked positivespace's gallery (http://images.cosplay.com/showgallery.php?cat=7202&ppuser=4751&password=&page=1), and The IGN report (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/501/501292p1.html). And still didn't see no other FFXI cosplayer.

IGNPS2: How do you feel about going to a Final Fantasy party without a Final Fantasy costume?

Ryoga Vee: I don't have any Final Fantasy costumes, but it's a little intimidating I'll admit that. But I'm with friends so I'm somewhat comfortable. I was kinda worried I'd be alone and they'd be like, "Hey, you're not supposed to be here!"

IGNPS2: How long have you been doing this for, you have a pretty elaborate costume?

Ryoga Vee: I've been cosplaying for five years.

IGNPS2: And what was the first costume that you made?

Ryoga Vee: [pause] I don't remember. I think I did Ash from Pokemon. I did a Pokemon trainer.

IGNPS2: Have you done a lot over the years?

Ryoga Vee: I've done a lot over the years. I'm constantly working on stuff. I've done Cloud and a bunch of other people.

IGNPS2: How many do you have?

Ryoga Vee: I think I have 10 completed costumes right now.

IGNPS2: And how many in progress?

Ryoga Vee: Four that I'm actively working on. I never do one project in particular. I always start a project go, "you know what? I should do this," and just blend the two together or move on to another and do them at the same time.

IGNPS2: Are you looking forward to playing FFXI?

Ryoga Vee: I've already been playing since October. Day one, October 28, I sat there at my door, waiting for the UPS man to come. I couldn't hear the doorbell so I kept running back and forth. I was on the board before it came out and we're all on the general board saying, "it's almost here, it's almost here," for a good five hours. I remember I woke up and UPS had a tracking at 7:22 AM and it was only 10 miles from my house. They didn't show up until 3 PM. Every time someone got one they'd write, "I got mine! I got mine!" and we'd bless the UPS driver.

SoulCrash: Yes there was a FFXI cosplayer there, she was there as one of the fishermen (woman her case). I believe she won 6th place(?) and got a FFXI OST. :)
