~ Hi guys! I have a question. Back towards the end of December, I commissioned someone to do Zelda's dress from Skyward Sword for me. I paid them by the end of January and told them that they the deadline was the end of April. I, of course did research on them before and they had 2 good reviews on them in the review thread. Now as I near the end of April, I am freaking out. I had asked for updates and they had agreed but I have not heard one word since the end of February. No pictures, no updates, nothing. I get that people get busy, but surely one email wouldn't hurt them. I have sent 5 messages over the course of the last 3 months, asking for updates, and I even started bugging them via the PM system on this site, but still nothing. At what point should I freak out completely? I'm not sure entirely what to do at this point as the con is less then a month away and I've not been able to order any of the pieces I need for the costume because I was waiting for the dress to be done first. I was suppose to Cosplay with a group and we are in an event.

I'm sorry i don't have any idea for you to figure out this mess. but if i may ask you a few questions about which dress it was id be happy to try and commission the dress myself for you. now i cant promise to meet the deadline since its such short notice of me reading this post you made however if you paid them through pay pal then you are entitled to your money returned.

Pm me if your interested or if you'd like to talk about future cosplays. and ill be honest im not the best i'm sure there are others out there much more talented than me but we can talk and determine if i can help you

Sincerely, Cosplaymaker

This is why I try to respond all of my messages. Even if I can't give a proper update or much of an update, it lets everyone know that I am still alive.

I hope this all works out for you though :/

When I work with commissioners they always message me every week if not every other week, unless they say otherwise.
So going three months was a very bad idea.
After the first 35days of no response you should've gone through Paypal and got a refund. Then if the commissioner got back to you later, you could just pay them again.

It's looking like you've lost whatever amount of money you payed that commissioner.
You should let everyone know the name of the commissioner so that no one else commissions them and gets scammed.

If your PayPal account is linked to your bank account, go immeditely to the bank and file a chargeback claim. They should give you papers and you can get your money back that way. Sadly, there isn't much else of an option. You can try to contact their state's attorney general and report them to the BBB...this is all quite drastic...but at this point, sadly, you can only conclude you've been scammed.

If the commissioner has just disappeared, the best thing you can do is try to get your money back through your bank and then leave a review stating the facts. You don't know if you've been scammed or not, there could be a logical explanation (even if it completely shafts your cosplay plans - logical can still suck), so until you have the facts of why/how your commissioner has been unable to fulfill your order, all you can report is that they disappeared so your only recourse was to try to get a refund or chargeback because you weren't going to get your costume on time.

As a commissioner I know I do my best to stay in touch, and if someone emails me to ask me where we are I absolutely reply. Not replying isn't necessarily a red flag, but disappearing for months is more than an inconvenience - that could ruin your plans and is bad. But these sorts of things aren't the type of thing you can guarantee when you're in the negotiation stage with a commissioner. All I can offer advice-wise for the future is to gravitate toward a commissioner who will give you a contract and agree in writing to any stipulations you request, including updates and photos and such. That way, not only do you have the peace of mind that the commissioner is listening to you, you also have something in writing to prove that they're defaulting on your agreement.

Hmmm yeah, fair point. I probably should of done something after the first month, but I thought maybe they were jus' busy. I'm to nice I think, giving people the benefit of the doubt. Sucks because I am letting my friends down, now they won't have a Zelda for our event! I'll figure something out, hopefully though.

I don't want to jump to any conclusions yet, because yes I do know how busy life gets. Happily, my other costume is pretty much done, so at least I'll have something to wear!

Thanks so much for making this thread everyone!
My commissioner has only been MIA a week now, but the shipping deadline for it to arrive in time for my con, has since passed. With my con within 5 days, it would have been nice to get ANY sort of update. (emergency, supplies ANYTHING) I would have been way more understanding ... I will let it go for a few more days. But with my con within a week, I'm not left with many options. I appreciate hearing everything you guys have gone through...

Thanks ...
