I am a girl, and I dressed as a female character once and got mistaken for a male crossplayer. ^_^;; And I'm not really that masculine looking or anything... (see my gallery for reference)

But seriously? Even the people who managed to figure out that I'm not a guy are cool with it. They don't really mind that I'm dressing as the opposite gender.

I'm a guy and people walk up to me at work and say, "Hey miss..." :lost:

My work outfit isn't flattering at all. :eeek:

I think the question is what do you mean by succesful? Does success mean having a good time at a con wearing your costume, or it means fooling people about your gender?

There was a rather amusing moment at Katsucon this year when a girl ran over to me in the dealer's room, excited to see someone cosplaying the boy that I was indeed cosplaying - she stops short suddenly, eyeing my chest, and says "You're a BOY!"

"No," I replied, patting several layers of ace wrap, "But I am very uncomfortable.."

My definition? When people actually THINK you're the other gender. Case in point, one Halloween when I was dressed as Stalker-chan, I was walking out of Burger King to go to work, and some guy actually called me "Young Man". See below for my photo.

I am an artist, a theater-geek and a perfectionist, so when I crossplay I try to create the illusion of at least a skinny "femmy / bishie-looking" guy to the best of my ability, but I don't think I really "pass" except possibly in certain still photos.

None of that really matters anywhere as much the fun I'm having IN costume, whether it's a "girl costume" or a "boy costume".

Back at Acen 2k i dressed as Irvine Kinneas, it was my first official cosplay. I am very short, which probably helped give me away. I don't think i fooled anyone for too long, if at all. the funniest part? I was hit on more in this costume than any costume i've worn since. I mean a lot more.

One quick question, does anyone ever refer to someone they know is crossplaying as the sex that that person is. Like you know it's a guy being, lets say Sailor Mercury, but instead you say "She did a good job." Curious, i seem to do it.^^

Here is some crossplay that i feel was successful. I think our costumes came out pretty well. I think that only one person mistakin me for a guy...only one. but other than that yeah.

im on the left and my friend ameria is on the right. :)

Saturday night after the MegaTokyo panel at Otakon the other year I was all dressed up in a cute little Gothic Lolita outfitand I went up to talk to Fred Gallagher. We had a nice but short conversation and as I was leaving I heard him say, "She was pretty cute." I turned around befuddled for a moment and then someone next to him said, "Um, Fred...that's a guy." The look on Fred's face was interesting to say the least when he looked back at me. I'd say that qualifies as successful. ^_^

ROTFLMAO Catboi!!!

I haven't really had the chance to test out my full crossplay skills As Learned At Cosplay.com ;) yet but this weekend will be my chance, at Anime Detour. But if success is having fun in your crossplay, then I've already been quite successful. I adore being Hiei, especially when the girls with the ratings cards at DragonCon rating costumes they saw below them in the lobby gave me two 9's and two 10's. Better than Dead Elvis got. :)

As for fooling? A friend who will get her first taste of both cos- and crossplay this weekend as my Youko showed my picture in costume to a friend, without saying who I was, and reports the reaction as "He's pretty cute." That's the only one so far, though. Not counting the people at DragonCon having to ask me when I was Dende whether I was male or female under the makeup - I admit it's hard to tell with full green face makeup, bald cap, ears, antennae, and a body-disguising robe. :)

You're going to Anime Detour? You'll have to stop on by and say hello to me in artist's alley.

I like dressing as Kurama and because of his girlish charm my mom thought he was a girl and that i was dressing as a girl. But when i told her that i was being a guy she ask why i was wearing mascara and caring around a rose. That took a lot of exsplaining.lol.

When I showed my mom my Kamui artbook costume I wanted to make she was happy!! (was one of the only anime characters she could tell was a guy) She said she was glad I was wearing something that covered me and made me less of a target to staler that may be near the hotel the con is at this year -_-'. I probably have the only mother who would rather me crossplay then dress as a girl character.

HA! Finally! Had the most hilarious reaction at ACen, dressed as Hiei.

I was about to go up the escalators from the dealer's room, and a guy coming down yelled across the hall "Dude! It's Hiei!" I just sort of waved at him, trying to stay in character even though it makes me grin when people call my character name. But as he got closer to me, he suddenly yelled out again "DUDE! You're a CHICK!" It took every ounce of my strength not to bust up laughing.

That, I guess, is success. :D

"OMG it's a girl!" reactions are pretty funny LOL XD I've had one of those happen before, I think I mentioned it in a thread similar to this one... Two girls thought I was a boy cosplaying Gackt but it was really Dee from FAKE ^ ^;;

While cosplaying is about the character and not about whether you make a convincing man/woman or not I have to admit I'm thrilled because today I had successful crossplay moments @D@

I went to the SoCal Renaissance Pleasure Faire dressed as Raphael Sorel and at the ticket gate the lady asked me "Sir, is your sword peace-tied?" It was the first time I enjoyed getting my weapon checked. Then later on one of the Ren Faire workers kept giving me this funny look. The scene went kind of like this "::him:: o_o" "::me:: ........" "::him:: >_o!" "::me:: .... Yes?" "Oh, you're a girl, thank god!" It was weird @D@ Anyway that's all, Ren Faire rocks as always XD

This past weekend at Fanime con, I was dressed as Baralai from FFX-2. I don't think I really fooled too many people, since I didn't make any effort to act as I guy, and I left my bindings a little loose, because they were getting uncomfortable- so I wasn't completely flat. However I was in the dealers room with three of my friends, two guys and one girl. We were browsing by one of the tables selling yaoi manga, and my friend (the girl) started to browse through there. I had already gone through all the manga there the day before, and had no real need to go through it again (mostly for my own good, because I spent $32 on a Gravi remix manga the day before) so my guy friends and I started talking about Yaoi and Hentai manga. The dealer (who was rather loud and obnoxious) obviously hadn't heard me talking because he was like: "Hentai for you three gentlemen down that way". I had a good laugh at that. He must have not recognized me, because the day before I had been there, out of costume looking through the manga rather extensively.

I was also at Fanime this past weekend, on Friday I was dressed as Touga and a bunch of girls came up and asked for my picture. I obliged them and then went to pick up my purse almost falling over in the process and squeaking (I have the most terrible balance >.<) and one of the chicks whispered "Omg, it's a girl" and her expression as she walked away was priceless^_^

Yesterday, when I was walking around Helsinki in my Fukusuke costume and attending a big forum meeting, I heard multiple isTHATaboyoragirls and a nice girl came by and told me I was a cute guy. ^^' My friend had to tell her my name is Milla and that I'm not a guy because I was laughing too hard at the moment. :P I always get those isTHATaboyoragirls even when I'm not cosplaying, but I guess that was the first time anyone has actually thought I was a boy. Oh, wait, not. Once when I was out in my kodona gear a little girl said "Look! That boy's got pink hair!" to her mom. ^^' It made me go all 'awwwwww'.

At JACON a few weeks ago, I was a judge for the cosplay contest on Friday night, and then on Saturday night I was a judge for the costume contest (no skits). Friday, I didn't wear a costume. Saturday, I wore an EGL costume (the one in my user icon, actually). The same two girls were judges on the panel with me Saturday night as Friday night.

After we had discussed and judged 4 or 5 people Saturday, I remarked on something, and one of the girls said to the other judge and the contest coordinator, "I agree with what she said," referring to me. The other two looked at her oddly. We kept judging.

A few minutes later, after a few more contestants, the same girl who had called me "she" asked, "So is Lee not going to be judging this contest?" (Lee is my name, btw.) Everyone looked at her, wondering if she was serious. Finally the other judge said, "That's Lee." I waved at her. :)

"Oh my God!" :D She had no idea I was the same person, and since she called me "she," I think she also thought I was a girl.

Later that night, after we finished prejudging the contestants, we three judges were called upon to present the awards after the fashion show. We each got to present our personal Judges Awards first. When I was called up to present mine, I approached the mic, and in my normal, male voice, began to speak. An audible, visible shudder ran across the room as people gasped, chuckled, whispered, or said "Oh my God." :) Most people had no idea I was a guy until I spoke. A whole audience thought i was a girl.

After the contest, at a party that night, a guy told me he was sitting in the audience, and before I had spoke, and was merely standing on stage, some guy behind him said, "The girl in the pigtails is cute." That was me. ;)

I have to keep reminding myself that Lostboy isn't a girl... because I still think he is she even reading that post because of the avatar! Add that to your list of successful crossplay stuff. :p Here all this time I thought Lostboy was a girl, a damn cute one too.
