I gues its time to subject a costume of mine to the potentially brutal cosplay critique world.

The tin foil gun is both a temporary and it was required by the first con that I wore the costume at. I should have a good one by Fanime. I also didn't have time to bend the arms of the glasses, but that too should be done. Otherwise, I wish I had a shot of the back to show the criss-cross of the straps and such, and I would like to note that all of the buttons but about the bottom 12 on the middle section are functional. Yayness.

That is one of most impressive Vash costume I've seen. I just love the hair. In terms for the glasses, my opinion, they seem oversized for you, for your face. The gloves look perfect! The red is an okay type of red, I personly think a darker red is better for Vash, but that's me... anyway... The last item is the gun: I reasonably assume you'll re-work on the gun, right? It just seems to me too... big.

Portionally, the costume kind of makes you smaller than you look like, because the hair style doesn't seem big enough. The hair is perfect, but to me, the costume then dwarfs you. This is what I think.

This is quite easily one of the most impressive vash costumes I've ever seen. Did you do much of the under-costume? I understand that most don't, but I have seen a few that did and it totally made the costume, plus it makes it easier in terms of removing the coat when you get too hot.

Despite the size of the glasses, that was the only pair I could find that I could afford. I am a little person, and I was not about to attempt to make my own ^,^;

The gun, as I said, was a temporary for the con that the picture was taken at. They had a tin-foil weapon policy, or no weapons at all. I will be re-making the gun out of wood, and better sized.

However, I don't exactly understand the whole dwarfing thing. I am a small person (5'1" or 5'2", depending on my posture for the day), so I guess at the worst I can call myself Chibi Vash. =)

Under-costume? I am a bit confused. I haven't seen the whole series (damn DVD's costing $30 a piece), and I didn't at all base the costume off the manga version. Based a few reference pictures that the front covers of a few of the DVD cases show, I know he seems to wear something like dark blue pants/jeans, over which he seems to wear close-fitting chaps of sorts, the keepads, and then kneehigh boots that seem to have this shinguard things over. Otherwise I assumed he wears a black shirt (which you can kind of see down his collar every now and then) and has the armcover over his robotic arms. If there's more that you have reference pictures for, send them my way! I'd love to futher complete this costume =)

And thank you both for your comments and critiques. *bow*

I think what Kurai Kaze is referring to is the bodysuit-ish thing Vash wears. If you look around, I'm sure you can find a good pic. They show all of it in the last episode (but since you havent seen it yet, looking for it might not be such a good idea, with spoilers and such)

Anyway. This is a really great Vash costume! I looove the boots and gloves. The wig is as perfect as it could be. The only thing missing is the zig-zaggy sides of the glasses, but that's extremely nit-picky. Great job!! ^^ *thumbs up*

Okay... I may be a little nit-picky, but I've made more Vash coats than I'd care to remember. ^_^

Episode 4 (Love and Peace) offers 2 extremely nice and useful full body pans of Vash. I watched those a couple times and used them for my design. You don't have to watch much of the series to see them, either. ^_^

-> Your front panel is longer than the rest of the coat... I've seen this on a couple Vashes, but I don't understand why. Is there a specific reference I missed at some point?

-> You have too many buttons on the front panel. There should be 12 rows total. The 4th row is at the waist (where the straps connect), and there is a little bit of extra space at the bottom of the panel.

-> The straps on the sides of the coat are a bit too wide. The opening has a nice reference for those.

Otherwise... I like what you did for the wig... that's definitely original! And making the shoulders of the capelet wide was a nice touch. Great costume, and I look forward to seeing it at Fanime!

ah....someone finallly got the hair right! XD

i think it looks good. i can't see the pic too well cause i'm on the tv computer, so everything's a bit blurry uhm...criticisms...i don't think i have any. i think i'd have to have a side by side, and really look into it to find something. i think it's gooood

I'm a small person too, but what I'm trying to say is that the costume seems oversized... maybe by a little bit. I just don't know how to describe it. It just seems the costume overshadows you, as opposed as you overshadowing the costume.

-> You have too many buttons on the front panel
-> The straps on the sides of the coat are a bit too wide.

-> Yeah, I know. That's because when I cut the original middle piece, I was stupid and measured the length wrong. So, I had to cut it down, but I wanted to include that last set of buttons so bad.
-> According to the reference pictures I used, I have the exact number of buttons I need =) I too counted them for that detail.
-> I know ~,~ I was just too lazy to re-cut them out AND re-do four buttonholes (remember, nearly all the buttonholes are functional >.<)

And thanks again for everyone's input. I appreciate it a lot. =)

Functional Buttonholes are a buttpainish to do.

Could I possibly see the reference pictures? I'm a little curious about all the variations in the coat design (coat color, button color, button style, strap style... now number of buttons). I get a lot of these commissioned, and playing around with those sorts of details interests me. ^_^

Well, what I did was I looked in the extra stuff of the 1st DVD, and also did a search of images on google, and I tried to kinda average it out. Also it was I think how I divided up the measurements of the pannel to make sure the buttons were all evenly spaced. I can probably lose a row of bottons or two anyway to fix the matter of the middle pannel length and leaving space.

I like it a lot too, and I personally can't find anything wrong with it other than the small correction that others have already stated.
What I can't get over it is the idea that you havn't even seen the whole series yet and you did such a great job on the costume itself. That's amazing. I can't imagine the accuracy if you had seen the whole thing first, before you made the costume. That takes skill. I like it! ^-^
I too especially like how you made the shoulders wide, a lot of Vash cosplayers miss the fact that there is this sort of over coat thingy on the jacket, it just adds that much more demension to the costume as a whole. Very nice.

Cool costume. I can tell you worked hard on it. I agree with the opinion above however that it "dwarfs" you. It seems to be a little on the bulky side, other then that, great job. Definately one of the better Vash costumes I've seen.

First off great job! I have been attempting my own Vash costume. I came across this thread while doing research. The hair you did was perfect I was wondering how you made it if youíre willing to reveal that. I've included one of the most useful pics I found for the under costume.

The gun is another story I had originally tried to buy a kit on eBay to build one. Three different kits were once out there the most realistic is banned in the United States even without functioning. They are very rare and hard to find now I was a hairs breath from getting the one on e-bay. I can find lots and lots of pictures but no sellers I may use my friendís wood shop to make one.

Anyway good job and good luck completing the outfit.

The wig is FANTASTIC, did you order, or style it yourself?

I think there are a few weaknesses in the coat, but none that i'd notice unless i stared at it for a long long long time. It looks like a good vash coat to me ^^

great work! and GO SHORT COSPLAYERS!!

Sorry for taking awhile, but here we go: I have put up a thread instructing on how I made my Vash wig. Good luck, and thanks again for everyone who has commented.
