View Full Version : Painting Your Chest To Look More Masculine (Female Perspective)

I did not know whether I should post this in the crossplay forums or in the make-up forums, so I gave it a shot here. ^^

I was wondering, from a woman's perspective, are there any make-up techniques you can use on your chest to make it look masaculine (i.e. shading that tricks the eye into thinking you have a man's chest, etc.)? For me, I have to wear a costume in which the center portion of my chest is showing *points to avatar*, and I was wondering if I should really consider doing something like this, since I want to pull off the most convincing crossplay that I can (and look as much of the character as I can).

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! ^_^

Ah, I sympathize. -_-; I'm sorry I don't have any really good ideas, only that ACE bandages are my best friend. But I guess that wouldn't work as well for Sephiroth... are you planning to use duct tape or what? (If so, you are a brave soul.) There are also ways you can bind your breasts and leave the middle of your chest showing. How tall/big-breasted are you? Those will help/hurt respectively. (Good job, Ms. Obvious ^_^;) I'd suggest buying some makeup in your skin colour and a bit darker, and play around with it in a mirror. Try to make fake muscles or something. XD I'll write again if I think of anything else.

Although I am trying to figure out the whole bonding issue, I'm most interested in figuring out how to make those "fake muscles". XD That's what I'm really asking in this thread.

Shading! I knew learning about that would come in handy!!

Okay. To make shading look realisitic, first you need to know where light is most likely going to be coming from--which is probably going to be somewhere above your your head. Then, you need to create the outlines of the shapes you're going to be shading, in this case, basically two horizontal lines, curving towards a vertical line in the center. I drew a quick and cruddy little diagram to show things a little better: http://img45.photobucket.com/albums/v137/youtoansweryou/shading.bmp . (Obviously, the different shades should all be blended in, this is just to give you an idea of the light values.) The two horizontal lines (bottom of his chest) seperate two areas. The first being the top area, which will be the area being hit by the light. The second is the inner area, which will be in a shadow. You'll need a few different values (light and dark) of paint, if you use paint, but you should be able to do it with just one shade of makeup, since its easy to blend.

The area right underneath the 'chest' should be the darkest, but with a slightly lighter value on top of it for the 'male breast' closest to the light source, which should blended into your skin tone. From the darkest point out, you just gradually make the values lighter until it fades into your skin. (The colored area shouldnt be as large as it is in the picture, I just wanted the shades to show up clearly.)

The veritcal line inbetween the other lines shouldn't have values as dark as the horizontal lines, because it's closer to the light source than the other lines. (It should also have a lighter value on the side closest to the light, but I forgot to show that in the pic).
You can probably find some good art sites (or books) about shading. Hope this helped, and wasn't terribly confusing (I'm really sorry if it was.. I'm not the best at explaining thihngs x.x). Good luck with the Sephiroth costume ^^

Thanks Sickness, that has really helped me. Although I have never really worked with make-up like this before, I shall do my best. ^_^ Too bad there's not a make-up artist in my Anime Expo group to help me if I need assistance... XD
