I know what I think of these costumes, but I'm just curious about what other people think.

here (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=135886&password=d46f796a2bb2c55c771a48102a1b4be3&sort=1&cat=7816&page=1) are pics of the costumes. heinkel reference shot (http://www.bloodknight.net/Manga%20Scans/Pics/Wolfe02.jpg) and a yumiko reference shot (http://www.bloodknight.net/Manga%20Scans/Pics/Yumiko01.jpg).

There are parts of both that I know need fixing. I made both from scratch and kinda crammed the finishing touches until the last second (as in 3AM morning we were supposed to wear them -_-) so yeah. but as I said, curious to see what you guys think. There are some more shots here (http://img39.photobucket.com/albums/v119/sithkittie/penguicon2004/), here (http://img39.photobucket.com/albums/v119/sithkittie/heinkel/), and here (http://img39.photobucket.com/albums/v119/sithkittie/yumiko/) if you care to look, as well as some in progress pictures. *cringe*

critiques?

You did a wonderful job on the costums. I think that they look wonderful on both of you.

Wow, these look really accurate to the manga drawings! *huge Hellsing fan* XD I especially like the Heinkel coat and how you got that to hang the way it tends to casually do.

The only critiques I'd make are fairly minor, and few:

On Heinkel, is that a wig, or is that natural hair? (Forgive me if it seems like a bit of a duh question, I only had one hour of sleep last night...morning...yeah - and just woke up from a 5-6 hour nap @.@) Anyway, if that's a wig, which I'm guessing it is, I'd cut it shorter, at least in the bangs. Heinkel's got really short, mannish hair, and that's a bit long for it... She's also missing white gloves - Heinkel's almost always wearing gloves, usually with something cryptic written on them like "Speak with dead," "We have a mission from God," or "Jesus Christ is in Heaven now."

As for Yumiko, her white underskirt hangs pretty unevenly - and while on most costumes that wouldn't stand out so much, it really does here, because it's white against black. Maybe you could adjust it's positioning, or shorten it in the front so it doesn't hang down like that?

Also, a wig/hair dye may help, since I think Yumiko's supposed to have black hair considering how she's drawn/toned, and the fact that she's Japanese...and all Hirano's other black-haired characters are given that same jet black inking. However, this isn't quite that big a deal considering you're working with characters who've never been colored, so there's room for some free interpretation/corner-cutting. (Something I've been dealing with myself, I'm finishing up a Pip costume! XD) Anyway, as long as the hair is pretty dark, it's all good.

And that's all that jumps out at me.... But overall, I think your costumes came out pretty good! Really good job considering this was last minute, late night work!

thanks.

yeah, trying to fix the gloves issue. *sigh* i am wearing a wig in the pictures, but i'm nervous about cutting it (expensive). It's also a bad style. it's got a zig-zag part that screams feminine. Thanks for the compliments on the coat ^_^ that thing took forever.

We have plans to dye audrey's hair, at least temp dye over the summer for a project. Her hair is far too long to fit in a wig, and she glared at me when I mentioned even temp dye on her hair. We tried pinning the slip up the first time she wore it. I'm thinking of actually stitching it in for our project, but the dress is rather tight as is and she can't step into it, it has to go over her head. *frustration* ok, i'm done ranting. hehe.

I love nun costumes, so they're automatically cool. I don't know the characters that well, other than the black hair thing on Yumiko. I also could hardly notice her glasses...but I mean, most of us wear prescription, so hey. I wouldn't expect someone to go get special glasses just for cosplay (although, some people have!).

Audrey's hair is not too long to get under a wig - check out the wig forum. There's threads on how to get hair under one. Make sure you have a wigcap, and practice. Sarcasm-hime can do it, and her hair is to her knees. Sometimes she pincurls her hair, and other times she makes a circular braid around her head, then wraps the trail of braided hair around the inside. Wigcaps keep the hair down and give you something to pin the wig to. Also, there's no such thing as 'temporary' black hairdye, so she should be warned. It's just due to the pigments required to make black.

Why not just hem the slip up a bit higher? Then you don't have to pin anything.

If you're nervous about cutting the wig, do you have any friends who have experience cutting/styling hair? You could also take it to a salon or barber shop and ask someone there to take care of it for you (which will cost a little, though I'm not sure how much), or at least give you advice. Don't be too nervous about cutting it though, it's good practice. ;)

As for your friend's hair, no worries XD I understand where she's coming from. I've got really long/thick hair myself, which is largely why I'm cosplaying Pip - I look a lot like him, hair and all. I've never dyed it, and have no intentions of doing so. Whenever wigs are concerned, I'll have a friend braid my hair and I tuck it into the back of my costume, then try to keep that covered by the wig hair and the collar. This only works for certain costumes, unfortunately (those with high collars, and/or longer hair), and after a while the braid starts coming loose and those damned stray hairs start peeking out. For Yumiko, however, I don't think your friend will have much of a problem - the costume has a high collar AND that nun's habit, and a long wig to keep her covered.

I've read over those multi-braid and pin-curl methods Eleryth mentioned in the wig forum, but I've not tried them myself yet... It's something I'm definitely interested in attempting though, I'm curious if I can manage it with my thick mane...

I've heard of people managing to put long curly hair under wigs before, but even my hair, which is only shoulder lenght, is a pain in the butt to stick under a wig. It's also a cost issue. Long wigs cost more, and we want it to look real. My wig was 50 and it's short. A wig for her would cost about 100 from what I've found. But if we do end up dying her hair we're gonna talk to a profesional first. I dyed my hair black and within a week it was brown in parts again, but we do want to make sure cause she'll have my head on a silver platter otherwise.

I just need to sit and fiddle with the slip for a while to figure it out. I also need to attatch the cowl somehow cause it looks funky after a long wear.

My aunt is a barber, and I talked to her and my mom's friend who is a stylist and both said that I'd need to take it to a wig salon and it'd cost a lot of money, which thanks to school i don't have. Is it really bad in front?

*laugh* Honestly, I don't think it's bad, it's just a little long in the front. Based on your pictures, I don't think you need to do anything in the back; I'd just snip half an inch to an inch off the bangs. Maybe what you could do, is put on the wig and have your aunt trim it for you while you're wearing it? That'd definitely save money :) I've never spent money on styling a wig myself, I always place it on a styrofoam head and trim it myself, or I have a friend cut it while I'm wearing it. You need it to look good on you, after all.

As for wigs, I've actually seen nice quality, long wigs for well under $100. Go here:
http://www.witchwigs.com

I've ordered from them several times before, and I have yet to be disappointed. The wigs are great quality, they're much less expensive than most other stores, they have a big selection, lots of colors to choose from, and they ship FAST. What's also great about them, is if you organize a group order and get at least 12 wigs in one shot, they give you a 40% discount off the price of each wig!
