Just curious...I know there was this other con (I don't remember the name) that had it...Rising Sun has some info on it, or so a friend of mine told me. But does anyone think there'd be one at ACen next year? Or maybe Anime Reactor?

It is metrocon in florida that is having it(ffball (http://www.finalfantasyball.com/) ). I doubt acen would have it. They will probably stick to the rave dances. It would be cool to have a ball type dance, but not limit it to just FF. *shrug*

The FFBall is an official, almost somewhat trademarked event by my friend Aaron. The roleplaying/dance idea is completely original. A con just can't be like "we're gonna do one" because it's a total idea-sniping. Little known fact: ACen's "Underground Groove" actually was spurred by a petition I sent around two years ago, asking for a more formal dance ala FFBall. Isaac Sher didn't believe that the people wanted a more mellow event, and I proved him wrong with over 200 signatures. It sort of turned into "Just Another Rave," but at least they play anime music. ...ACen is just really techno-based I guess and can't escape from it. I still like UG, though; they let us Para Para there. As for an actual "FFBall," that's a no. Probably a NO for AnimeReactor, too, since they're centered around exhibitionists and naughtiness. ;P COME ON, they're having a hentai toga party. Your best bet would just be to try and get out to Metrocon and join the fun there...Chicago won't be getting anything like that for a long time.

Well, I thought the FF Ball was a cute idea, but I didn't know the whole background to it so...oh well.

I whould love a ball at Acen too. Heck even Underground Groove is too much for me. (Why did they make it so freaking dark in there? I could barely see my hand in front of my face! Last years UC had the lights dimmed so you can see who the heck you were with!)Same goes for Anime Reactor, even though their dance is 18+. I was happy that they had karoke running at the same time for those who didn't want to/couldn't go to the dance. Don't they have an all ages dance at AR too? Though that's probably a rave too. :p

So yes, I'd love some kind of formal dance, doesn't even have to be FF. But I can see an extreamly slim chanch of happing judgeing by the replies. :( It whould be nice for the poor souls who can't travel all the way down to Florida.

What if there was a band playing final fantasy music that you guys all danced to? =)

I have seen other cons have more formal or in-character dances, and I think they're great ideas! I'd love for ACen to have a ball in addition to the dances they currently have. I don't think they should copy FFBall or any other con-specific dance, but in general a formal-style dance would be cool.

HEY! That's a great idea! We could have a little FF gathering in the lobby, or something! ^.^

Troppy - That was your petition? I think I totally signed it!!

I would also like a formal, high-class, non-rave dance. I enjoy dressing up and it'd be a good opportunity to hang out with friends while our ears aren't being blasted by techno. We wouldn't have to make it Final Fantasy/cosplay oriented . . . we could just call it the Acen Formal or something like that.

One possible idea stems from something Cardcaptor Will said . . . he'd really like a piano concert. It'd be neat to have a small piano concert where everyone gets dressed up, with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres <s>and martinis</s>, though this would cost a prett penny. I still really like the idea of a formal dance.

I think a formal ball at Acen would be great.

...you guys want to start a petition about it? :)

Hey!

Who didn't get the message there in my last post?

WE HAD THIS PETITION LAST YEAR.

It got hundreds of signatures.

IT WAS FOR A FORMAL DANCE. The initial signing requested formal wear. slow songs. prom-ish. ACen accepted it, and then decided they didn't want to do it, and turned it into underground groove. It isn't a new concept, people, and if Isaac or anyone on programming gets such a thing in their inboxes, they'll be like "again? we already dealt with this."

...sorry but...that's how it went down...I don't know what you are expecting, but... it's been done. :(

Persistence pays off you know... ^^ I like the idea, but then again costume balls in general are fun. I don't know, if there's a petition I'm willing to sign it. And yes Troppy, I did read your post. Some of us didn't go to ACen that year, so who knows... I'm up for shoving another petition in their face.

if you have enough signatures why not just get a space at some hotel an do it on your own time/space...like the egl tea party? acen didnt want the egl tea party but they had less than 100 ppl a did it else where an it was still fun and successful.

this makes more sense than complaining a con, won't devote a large room to small group of ppl. in one year one could easily arrange for a non-con-funded event like the egl tea party or the "banned costume" event.

i have no problem with FF, the ballroom scene in whatever ff game it was in, or formal dances...just think that complaining about how you didnt get your way b/c "big bad (insert con here) didn't do what i wanted them to do...". so what if acen didnt wanna do it, am sure acen had alot of other ideas that didnt happen proposed to them. there are other cons in the area that might just want to hold this event on their schedule, or just rent out space yourself at another hotel. i think if you held it at another hotel if any given con rejected the idea...you coud have your event however you wanted and ppl woud be happier (maybe).

Well...

I don't think it's a bad idea. I'm also up for a petition if that's how it's gonna go, so I agree with Masayume. ^.^

Flik - I think you should play Final Fantasy music. ^_^

Sorry to revive an old thread, but if anyone is still interested in the possibility of a formal ACen dance, this was recently posted in the ACen forums:

" We'll I guess it's my turn to chime in here.

In case nobody knows, I'm Beryl Turner, 2006 Operations Section Chief and
Co-Promoter/DJ with ACen. Along with Chris King, Underground Groove has been my
child for the last few years. Issac and Jazz approached me about the idea of
creating an alternate dance featuring alternative forms of music including, hip
hop, J-Pop, anime themes, and top 40.

Chris and I took that idea to heart, simply because we both believe in diversity
in music. So, with Allen Castillo's help, we began looking for DJs to do just
that. There have been some ups and downs with this project. People refer to it
as "the other techno dance." The only reason that it turns out that way is
because by the time the evening winds down, it's the only thing that people will
dance to.

All that this has proven is that you can't please anybody. We catered to the hip
hop crowd and people got on the boards two years ago and complained. We catered
to top 40 and people complained. We played anime/video game music and folks
caterwauled all about it. We catered to the Eurobeat/Para Para crowd and people
complained...okay, I complained a little too, but I'm man enough to admit it :D

Just for the record, I'm a stepper. We don't play any stepper's music at
Underground Groove. Nor do I play any Dusties, Disco or Deep House. Those genres
of music are what represents me...but I don't play them because the majority of
the attendees would not like to dance to them. That is what happened to the
other above mentioned genres of music. The vast majority of ACen attendees want
to hear techno, tech house, jungle, breakbeat, trance, and other regular
ravey-clubby stuff.

Now, we're getting eight pages of thread traffic for a formal dance.

Okay.

But before I go any further, let me say that this formal dance will not take
the place of Underground Groove.

Prove to me that this will work and that we can get 300+ people to participate
in this event.

To, the programming people on the thread, 300 people for a formal ball is
actually a decent attending number. More than that, and it gets clunky and
convoluted. Twelve years of doing weddings, cotillions, coming-out parties,
graduation parties, and even one Bar Mitzvah (don't ask...please do not ask how
I got roped into DJing one of those), gives you a sense of these things.

I think that a separate registration/admission for this event is not an unfair
requirement. The money taken in for this event will help pay for decorations and
catering...but more importantly, it will serve to show who is committed to
attending and who is giving lip service.

How does $10.00 a head sound for an admission fee?

Do you know why, I say that there should be a fee?

Because, if I'm going to be standing up in the front of the hall with a damned
suit on, playing waltzes and other formal music, there damned well better be a
full house dancing to my music!!!

So, here is my proposal. If we do this, then it's a RSVP w/cash retainer.
We'll set up a room with cocktail tables and your money will get you entry, a
seat and drinks at a non-alcoholic bar.

Better yet, how about the Spoony Bards performing live and a DJ for the band
breaks?

So there it is.

If the gorram lot of you can guarantee 300+ people who want to attend this thing
and will put their money where their mouths are, then I'll do my damnest to try
and make this happen.

Now where we at?

B. Turner "

Troppy: Why not try again? And your friend Aaron should be proud.. He had a brilliant idea and other people want to do it. It's not ripping his idea off at all.

I think this could be great started on a smaller scale, maybe even just in one of the panel rooms (there's a really nice size one where Jan was doing her yoga class last year that comes to mind..). The catch is that someone actually needs to DO it, volunteer for it, sponsor it, whatever. Saying "I'll run X panel" works a lot better than "ZOMG, I want X panel, do it for meeee!"

So you start small. Pop a stereo in a room, hang a sign... Off you go.

The Bards would definitely be willing to contribute music in a formal dance!!!! I've pointed other members in the direction of this thread.

Troppy: I agree with Beverly. Some of us don't exactly have the money to go down to Florida...if anything, your friend started a revolution and sparked other FF balls around the nation...XD

Or *some* sort of ball...it would be really nice...I think it's what ACen really needs. :3

yeah, CCW here

If i'm still in programming this year, i'll push for it, i did try to push for a formal dance, but basically I agree with beryl, we can't make everyone happy, and catering to one crowd ruins it for everyone else. Sad, but true. And after dealing with ParaPara this year, yeah, I also agree with Beryl that it's a great idea on paper, but can get out of hand really quickly. I will push for the dance idea again this year, but keep in mind that it will be separate from UG, and we also have to find a way for the dances to be on time this year *cough*hyatt*cough*, which i think is a reason that it killed PP last year.

I would go and pay the cover charge, though I hope it wont be too formal. I am hoping I could still wear my cosplay outfit to something like that. I am having a bit of trouble finding the acen forum where I can voice my interest on such a project is. Could some one give me the link please?

If the link doesn't take you to the forum page (it's under the heading "Fancy Masquerade Ball"), then hit the Programming section on the main page of the forums, and then Programming/Operations.

Wow you guys, this is REALLY exciting. ACen is going to kick so much ass this year if this really gets off of the ground. Thank you SO much Spoony Bards, I'll be sure to come by and request lots of music if you all are playing out in the halls again!

Man, I'd love a formal ball. I hate dancing, and I feel somewhat dumb during the SoapBubble. This is perfect, and the Final Fantasy theme seals it for me!

That and how cool it will be to dance with Tifa, Aeris, and Yuffie. Maybe one for Spike, too. ;)

Frenzied, I just wanted to expand on this a little, since the thread there is such a good one. Thanks for putting that out there!

In the spirit of an “Anime Masquerade,” this event, while being formal, shall retain the spirit of cosplay. (http://acen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10718)

Acen wants to do a formal charity ball, which means you wear your formals, whether cosplay or otherwise. Yes, this is high school prom, night at the opera, black-tie wedding formal. Ladies, wear your best gowns, and gentlemen, a suit, tuxedo, or at least a dark jacket and tie. Cosplay is allowed, even encouraged, think SeeD uniforms, ball gowns, princess dresses, that sort.

I think a lot of guys will balk at the idea of a jacket, but most guys I know have at least dark pants, and a jacket can be borrowed, even purchased very afforably at a secondhand store.

This is something to make an effort for, something cosplayers are quite familiar with! It does require planning and construction on the part of some people, but that will be the thing that makes the atmosphere so wonderful. We also have the opportunity to do a great thing for the community, which is really important.

And hey... this is around prom season, after all! Lots of sales, returned formalwear on sale, that sort of thing.. ^.~

That sounds really great, I wouldn't mind attending that, except I'm tempted to cosplay for it.

On a side note, I'm not sure if this has been stated in this thread yet(Im too lazy to read every post) But Metrocon will not be holding the Final Fantasy Ball anymore. I talked to the director who ran it, last year and he said that it is over and wont be held again in the future. It was a good idea though, FMB, and theres absolutely nothing wrong with bringing up the topic.
