View Full Version : Crossplay?

Girl--> Guy
Guy--> Girl

I was kinda wondering because I'll be doing my first crossplay at Megacon, and I'm a bit nervous about it, even though I've seen it done all the time^_^

I'm going as Riku from Kingdom Hearts in the black bodysuit and I've muscled the whole thing out, so everything except my legs is very realistically guy-ish^_^ (Yes, I even padded 'down there' O.O What...? I had an extra pad left ^___^ )

So, what are your thoughts, experiences, reactions, etc. ? ^_^

hm i have never actually -cos-played
always end up cosplaying a male character and last time i checked i was female ^^

but i've never had any problems o,o, and not really any strange reactions since i think its pretty often that girls will cos/ guys..and guys vise versa
esp if your cosplaying a bishonen...in my opinion. most girls can pull off bishonen better than guys but of course....there are many guys who can pull them off as well ^_^ *heck they can even be bishojo!*

*laughs at "I even padded 'down there') Lol... i suggest socks ^^;;

I'm crossplaying Chloe, Pretearwink. It's my first crossplay as well. Megacon will be the second con I wear it to. I think it's fun, the added challenge to make it believable is great.:D

I have yet to do a female cosplay. >.>;; Even though I am one...

::Pads down there as well and, upon Rosiel's suggestion, uses socks. Feels funny.:: But it does help. Hehe. u.u;

Are you strapping yourself down? (I've seen a lot of crossplayers that don't, it really helps if you do... and what's cool is a squished chest can look muscly with something over it. XD )

Crossplaying is my favourite pasttime.. but I've always liked confusing people as to what sex I am. ^_^ ::Dork, wanders off. ^_^::

I've never cosplayed a female character,just haven't had the motivation to do one.

Cross-play is really all I do ^^; and I like it that way.

as for wrapping/binding: argh! I can't wrap the flipping gauze right! help! ..It's either this or buy a stomache-wound binder thingy.

I like crossplay. ^__^ I've always enjoyed roleplaying the male characters instead of the female, so why not cosplay them as well? It can get tough to choose one based on my body type (short, petite) but I usually just go with it and have fun. :) I've done about an equal amount of crossplay to my normal cosplays, and I've got at least 2 crossplays planned for this upcoming year..

I especially like crossplayers that leave you guessing their real gender! ^_-

You're going to Megacon too, Psyth? Maybe we could meet up ^__^ And Chloe is from.....? ^_^;;;

Thank you, everyone^_^ By the way, does anyone have any..er..."binding tips"? ^_~;

Yepper. I will be there, Chloe is from a series called Noir. Sure, we can meet up, I think it's still gonna be at the Convention center, no? They switched it on us from the Expo Center to the Convention center last year....

I've crossplayed as Gackt and Gabe (from http://www.penny-arcade.com) Nothing really hard about it ^_^ except for the breasts part >_<

Crossplaying to me isn't different from other cosplaying. Sometimes it's more fun ^_^

Regrettably (for the topic under discussioin), I have a very obviously "feminine" body (good hips, curvy waist). While I can strap myself down pretty flat, there isn't a lot I can do about my hips. There's a lot of crossplay I'd *like* to do, but I'm simply not built for it - usually I run into this problem in j-rock costumes, where not only are my sources male, but they're skinny little stick-boys. I've given up on making myself resemble the source and just try to do the best I can with what I have.

I only Crossplay so I'm use to the odd staring match with confused con goers.it's intresting..My only problem is washrooms. So many times I've been corrected by people in the halls saying "yo the mens is that way man!" followed by "oh sorry I thought you were..nevermind"..

your pretty brave walking around with "padding" lol I could never do it with a straight face.

PretearWink
12-01-2002, 08:14 PM
I'M not the brave one ^_^ I once saw a Dante crossplayer who was 'stuffed', crotch-thrust her way across a stage in front of a thousand people....THAT'S brave XD

nekochan
12-01-2002, 08:44 PM
lol.. that's so cool. i'd like to be that brave someday.. but i doubt it.. it's hard enough for me to GO on stage. but yeah i've been meaning to crossplay but so far.. not yet. i prefer it tho.. in my opinion, it's easier for girls to crossplay because a lot of girls wear guys clothes often anyway. however, it's not that common for a guy to wear a dress outside of crossplay.. ^^

Spooky Brew
12-01-2002, 08:49 PM
For me, I love doing costumes and a lot of them are guys, but I don't like to call it "cross-play". Basically, I want to dress up as who I want to be, and that's the fun part of it. "Cross-play" to me kinda sounds like 'cross-dresser' (which, duh, of which it comes from), and I'm not a cross-dresser at all. So, nevermind what I said in this and keep going.....

Koumori
12-01-2002, 10:34 PM
Same here, I think. I don't call it "crossplay" because I just don't try hard enough to look like a guy. I don't look like a guy. It is the hand genetics has dealt me.

Omigosh..people always think i'm a guy
when i'm dressed up as Squall. the most confused are the people at japanese conventions. An old lady came up to me and asked if i was a girl or boy. -_-;
most of the time, girls just point at me and giggle. -_-;
It's a lot of fun to fool people and pretend to be someone I'm not. ^o^

I don't think anything's wrong with a woman using Rosiel's patented "sock crotch" technique for crossplay:)
It's all decent as long as the bulge is not too much. Besides it looks more realistic that way.

Zelly
12-02-2002, 10:12 AM
I have yet to cosplay a girl XD lol. all my costumes have been boys. Everyone usually can tell I'm a girl anyway by my voice though...;_; and I usually don't tape down my chest or whatever. Even though it's small to begin with. *._.*; How do people do that anyway? Flatten their chest? X_x; People tell me different methods and then say that such-and-such method is actually bad to do and...yeah. okay. *shrinks away* ._.

Rosiel
12-02-2002, 10:14 AM
> It's all decent as long as the bulge is not too much.

That is the important point. I've seen girls who must have stuffed a big winter coat down there and I could not help but stare. LOL

And one of the good sides of stuffing is that is changes the way you walk and sit and makes you lose a lot of your feminine habits. Which is why I tend not to if I dress up as Zoisite or any other male character who needs to be highly effeminate.

aahh i do love it when ppl address me
by my other cosplay name ^_^ !
^_^; sorry to dissapoint ya..

socks?? i'd never use a sock down there..
0_0; ppl are gonna think i'm a trans or something.

Binding - well it's easy for me cuz i'm not really big there. I use my artist tape/ drafting tape over a sports bra. Drafting tape can be easily removed and it's soft. don't put it too tight or you'll like faint cuz it would be hard to breathe.

No disapointment!
Just means that il have to fight over you with a few other girls xD

poor overly molested scrawny..

Karisu-sama

is changes the way you walk and sit and makes you lose a lot of your feminine habits.Dunno about the walk, I didn't notice much difference when I tried it (except that you are aware there is padding), but maybe it's just me. (The SO didn't notice anything "different" either - I didn't tell him, and I had on a long T-shirt that day.) I don't sit like a girl anyway, I have to consciously remember to do so when I (rarely) wear a skirt, LOL...

I think my husband would kill me for a crossplay sock deal. Or at least he'd try to. He's already not happy about, quote, "being married to a guy" when I crossplay. I don't see his problem; so my chest temporarily disappears, big deal...

I once saw a dancer in a lesbian bar in San Francisco who wore nothing but a guy's wrestling uniform (with a sock), and sneakers. Now SHE could pass. Whoa.

I don't think my Seifer costume can count as crossplay, cause I was a crazy female version. My first real crossplay was of Shurenlord from Magna Carta. Ace bandaging your boobies down sucks! ow. ;_; But I luved the costume anyways. Pics are up on my site. ^___^

Crossplaying's fun. I don't see any female character to cosplay in the future on my list. The first time I crossplayed, as Duo Maxwell, I bandaged "it" and I was so amazed at the way I look with a flat chest. I realized then how different it would be. LoL. ^_^

Hikaruchan
12-25-2002, 09:57 PM
Of my 4 crossplays so far, 2 of the characters had cloaks with capelets on top of that - so didn't have to bind myself to try to look right - which is good. If Access & InuYasha hadn't been so ghetto I might have bound myself, but since I was just goofing off decided to be comfortable.

I could never ever pass for a guy. I've tried it, but there is nothing I can do about the hips and waist (unless I padded the waist, which would make me look like a chubby guy with girl's legs or something, I haven't tried that).

Hmm... Weell, I've been thinking about cross-playing Vash this April... (My friend made this uber-cool Vash coat... ^_^) Aand I see nothing weird about it. But then again, I don't know how well the coat fits me, so I might have ta bind my chest down...Ouch, pain, pain. ^-^

I have absolutely no idea who I could crossplay as. I'd love to do it sometime, but I think i'd be harder for me to pull off. Having a big chest doesn't help at all. >< I'd imagine it'd be too painful! Tho I'm gonna love making Rabi~en~Rose for my boyfriend and helping him look like a girl. That's gonna be soooo much fun. =)

I'm doing a crossplay for Otakon, and all I can do is hope a guy isn't the same person as me. I'm not doing a "female" version of the character and I am very not flat-chested. That's more of my worry than the hips - the shirt hits so the hips aren't as noticable. I don't think I have the courage to bandage down, so we'll just have to see how funky it looks...

Moonlight Knigh
01-05-2003, 09:41 PM
hm sailor pluto ^_^ well I may try that thanks for your suggestion also I think that the Hilos costume can make you look more masculine, but mainly facial features can sway, so it is hard to tell sometimes ^^

Anyways, eh I don't know... turmoil in my life right now, and I don't know if I will be able to do a convention and handle the rest right now ~.~

Crossplaying is really great, like everyone's said so far. Confusing real gender, ect. Just adds a little more depth to it, so its not only just skin (or costume) deep.

At anime expo 2002 I saw a very good rabi en rose, who my friends and I agreed that it was a (very cute) guy. We were hesitant to go up and ask. But hey, it's not every day you get confused for a guy/girl.

I do crossplay quite a bit, its fun. Couple of times have been mistaken for a guy, part of the reason is I am built like a short guy with boobs. Its sad that men's patterns are a much better fit for me then womens.

It was funny a couple of years ago that a girl was bragging that she had been the only female Xelloss at AWA - til I said I don't think so - last time I checked I was and always been female.

My parents found it amusing when I first decided to crossplay. My mom wa sall" you look like a transvestite" got to love the encouragement eh? However, they don't care at all now and my friends at school think it's cool.
I like more male characters than I do female characters and a lot of male anime chars look feminine, so why the heck not crossplay?^_^

Moonlight: Have you tired looking around the net for crossdresser sites. A number of them, as I'm noticing, offer a collection of tips/tricks. And while money can be tight, some of these sites have a listing of products to help (in some degree) appear more feminine.

Moonlight Knigh
01-12-2003, 12:11 AM
Yeah I have been through the whole works as far as more feminine products. =) Such things as silicon breast enhancers and the one that I wanted was a filled in lace bra. I also found some mild to extreme feminine things for down low as well... some of them are to make it look even more realistic than it should be, and besides you don't need to buy something even more expensive than the lower cost items that aren't going to get seen (I am speaking of a certain line of product on this one...) anyways you can easily get things that will tuck away the bulges and give you an amazing female look =)

I've cross-played as Squall from FF8. Guys usually have much more comfortable outfits than the girls. Therefore, if you want a nice comfy outfit, guy characters are the way to go.

I have yet to wear it to a con though..Katsu will be its first. I did wear it for a music video. ^^

I recommend binding for girls
going as guys cuz it totally adds
the effect of the character. I don't know
about stuffing socks or whatever down there..
that's going to far me thinks.

Moonlight Knigh
01-14-2003, 08:37 PM
hm well if it fits the character, than it may as well be padded neh? @_@ I mean it doesn't matter either way, but still it makes it more convincing that you are that character

I don't know what's the big deal with stuffed socks because binding seems so much more uncomfortable and time consuming then simply stuffing a sock down the pants. I guess we all have to draw the line somewhere.^_^

for me anything is fair game as long it's safe and not permanent.

Looks like we had quite a number of young women saying they can pass for anime men. That's not surprising, which this has already been mentioned before.

It's noteworthy to say that humans in the womb first start out as female, then can continue to remain female or turn into a male. Crossplay sort of follows this too.

In addition to the question of crossplay, there is also the factor of ethnicity. Usually a nonissue because anime characters are drawn from the same models, with features like hair to differentiate them. I always wondered why tons of anime characters are white, or white looking even if they are Japanese with Japanese names.
