View Full Version : saiyuki!

I have this thing, when I've watched/read some of a series, or listened to the beginning of a song, and I have that . . . "I'm gonna really love this forever" moment, I have to go bounce off the walls about it to somebody. Since no one's around, lucky you! XD Course I'm gonna evangelize to my friends and force the anime club to watch it, later on.
I got the Saiyuki manga back in October, cause I'd heard the name flying around, and as soon as I saw the art I was sold. I spent a good portion of the next couple of months transliterating it (I can't translate much besides SFX and the occassional phrase, but I do it to practice). Hah, I took it to the emergency room with me. The doctor looks at it, asks to see it, then after a long pause says, "Why are you reading Chinese porn?". Since, naturally, he flipped to one of the boobie pages, lmao.
So anyway I had to get the anime, just took a while. I had a rather nasty moment tonight, when I discovered that my mom taped over episode 4 with a David Bowie concert . . . =_+ But luckily episode 6 survived, I'd been saving it cause I thought it was gonna be good. I was right :crylaugh: And now I'm REALLY glad I decided to cosplay Genjyo Sanzo. He is SO one of my favorite characters now. But . . . now I have to wait a few WEEKS for the next episode to reach me . . . 9_9 Since I note that there aren't any character shrines on the net (didn't find any), I shall block off some future time to fix that. ^^ Anybody else want to share the love of Saiyuki? Otherwise, you can just look at me strangely and move along . . .:juggler:

^^;; I got a Saiyuki promotional DVD with my NewtypeUSA I bought today. It's the first episode I think. IT IS THE FUNNIEST THING ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!! After watching the first few minutes of it, I was already laughing so hard I was crying XD
Oh -- try going on http://www.anipike.com/series7.html and scrolling down to where it says "Saiyuki". You should be able to find some okay sites. =D

I actually have another Saiyuki dvd bootleg which has some other kind of media on it. It's saiyuki, but it looks 1/2 fast mega cheap animation. It's really really bad. but at least it was in Japanese. I watched the disk that came with the latest US newtype, and it was much better animation.. actually it rocked.. but the dubbing made me ponder sappuku.. How much do they pay these english voice actors again? I think they told eachother to shut the hell up, and swore enough time to snuff out anything they really might have been saying in Japanese. Hell as long as they are swearing it's gotta be fun filled right? hehe
I patiently wait for the final Saiyuki dvds -_-

I actually typed a rant and then my browser crashed. ._.; *looks around for ADV spyware* lol.
Aside from the painful miscasting, a fair amount of the dialogue was pretty true to the original. What they were thinking with Hakkai's scene, I have NO CLUE, all I can say is he's really NOT the swearing type. It's less of a "omg look what you did to my show" crazy fan thing, and more of a, look at how casting and rewrites *fundamentally change* the audience perception of characters. :|
But, if even the dub (which honestly broke my heart, and I'm not a hardcore sub monkey) can draw people in, that's a testament to what a great show Saiyuki is. ^^ So glad to have you, Tenjou, lol. ^^ Hope you get the series when the DVD comes out at the end of this month!
Nails I think the thing you're talking about is the "interactive" Saiyuki movie . . . I don't have any other info on it really though.
*edit* Oh yes. All other questions aside. The thing I want to know most from ADV is not why they cast the emotionless pretty boy voice actor who did Orphen as SANZO, or anything else, but why - WHY WHY - did they DUB THE DRAGON. Hakuryuu says nothing but "chuu!" and things to that effect the WHOLE SERIES. WHY DID YOU NEED TO DUB THAT. I just fundamentally don't understand. @_@;;; They had to HIRE someone and pay them money to go "chuu!" into a mike . . . "in English"? I'm not sure whether to laugh hysterically, or recommend them for the looney bin.
o_o; They dubbed Hakuryu?! Ok, something wrong with that. -_-; But yeah, I just saw the first DVD of Saiyuki a few days ago and I absolutely love it. The opening sequence was really cool and I love the theme song already. ^^ Since I only watch animes subbed, I didn't even bother looking at the dub. *shivers at the thought*
I think my fav characters are Gojyo and Hakkai and I absolutely love love love Hakuryu! When I first watched it, my reaction was "OMG! It turns into a Jeep! Thats so cool!" lol Of course, I've always loved dragons. ^^
Though I do have a bit of a complaint of the anime style as compared to what I've seen of the manga style. Specifically the way they draw Sanzo's eyes in the anime bugs me. They make them way too slanted. o_o; Some reason it just really annoys me and the fact that on the DVD whenever they get to a point where the "commercial break" is (and I don't know if Saiyuki orginally had eye catchers or not since the DVD didn't put them in if it did) that there is this odd pause after the fade out where it looks like they just stopped the anime for a few seconds and then it unfreezes. Its just weird and it does that in every episode. O_o;
Other than that, I absolutely loved it! ^_^

Yeah it's definitely not the same as the manga art. It's really cool actually, in the movie (Requiem), they had Kazuya Minekura do a lot of the key animation. The artbook for the movie has a section in the back that's her key animation right up against the cleanups that were actually used, I thought it was really interesting to see them side by side . . . so the movie artwork does actually look more like the manga, though it's still different. I think no one draws quite the way she does, lol. ^^

The DVD that I got is rated "15+" for the profanity, but the stuff they said wasn't all that bad. ^^ Nothing worse than what I hear everyday at school.
Ayaka~ Yeah, if I hadn't gotten the promo DVD, I probably never would've heard about Saiyuki. Hopefully the longer DVD will have the Japanese vocals as well on it. =D Maybe I'll get it. It looks like a very good series from what I've seen. ^_^
The ending theme song is great!! It's like.. Japanese ska! =D
04-18-2003, 11:53 PM
They dubbed the dragon!!!!! :eek:
Anyway, Saiyuki is a pretty good show. My friend has the entire series (HK bootlegs ;) ) and forced me into a Saiyuki marathon. o_O . Another friend of mine has the entire manga series all exept for "Reload". Another friend has that. ^_^
I have noticed that they toned the anime down a bit compared to the manga. In the manga Konzen Bosatsu (I think thats her name) perfers to wear a see through top.:eek: I'm glad she doesn't in the anime. :thumbsup:

And I'd still like to know why the only thing Hakuryuu changes into, is a jeep (Goku wonders the same thing).
*Is reminded of Goku again, because he is currently hungry*

I've finally thought of a possible reason for dubbing Hakuryu; maybe they couldn't isolate that from the audio track or something. I'm going to try to find out for sure, actually, I'm really curious . . . ^^;
Yeah . . . not overly fond of Kanzeon's "diaphanous" manga top, either.
Maybe cause dragons are bred for transportation? The only other dragons that appear are the flying dragons that Kougaiji and co. have, which are for the same purpose. o_O Dunno though, lol! *wonders how often Minekura-san gets asked about that*

ahhhh hara heta.....heheh^-^

04-20-2003, 02:25 AM

and yes in the poster they are really hot!!!!
04-20-2003, 08:31 AM
You probably got Newtype this month without the plastic wrapping, I guess. That's probably why you didn't get the DVD =(
04-20-2003, 09:07 PM
There's a Saiyuki poster in this months Newtype!?!
I better let my friend know. She's a big Saiyuki fan.
Heck I just might even buy a copy myself ^_^.
04-21-2003, 10:25 PM
Just bought it. ^_^
GIANT SPIRITED AWAY POSTER!!!!!
I watched the dvd and couldn't help but laugh. The dub is just plain weird sounding.
04-25-2003, 11:51 AM
Waii!! I love Saiyuki! Especially Goku, I find him to be the cutest thing =3 But yes, I have a wondeful friend who got into it over a year and a half ago and she dragged me into it ^^ My got those cute Saiyuki UFO dolls of Sanzo & Gojyo last year at Fanime. *sigh* she has still yet to finish get the last half of the series -.- Every Saiyuki fan would drop dead if they saw my friend's room. You can't see the walls because there are so many layers of Saiyuki posters. =P
04-25-2003, 02:26 PM
Dub Hakkai is the "Dude, Where's My Car?" version . . . ok I guess it would be "Dude, Where's My Jeep?" . . .
My place is becoming a Saiyuki shrine, but it's still pretty subtle at the moment . . . mainly cause it has to compete with all my OTHER anime junk from miscellaneous series. If you get a chance to snap a pic of your friend's room, I'd be amused to see it. XD
04-25-2003, 03:17 PM
I've actually seen the entire two seasons of the show, half of that in badly subbed Chinese-based Japanese translated to English fansubs. It was quite hard to understand what was going on, but it's a wonderful series.
I bought a Saiyuki calendar the year before it became an anime, just based off the art. Never figured it would get this big.
Anyone else seen the entire series?
04-25-2003, 04:03 PM
Ayaka - Will do =P

I've seen the whole series as well. Can't remember if I said that earlier in the thread or not . . . o_O; And I keep rewatching the episodes . . . ^^;;;
04-30-2003, 10:38 PM
I still need to see the 2nd season ;.; I've been waiting over a year for my friend to get the last 25 episodes and she won't let me get them because she claimed that series since I got Inuyasha ^^;
08-01-2003, 12:12 AM
yes...i think saiyuki is one of my favs! i was going to get the first dvd at jacon...but i didn't i got WK...and either way i got to see the 1+2 dvd from my uncle. i want the 3rd one put i wanna have the others too. genjo sanzo ::drrooollls::

I <3 Saiyuki... but it has more flaws than I can count on both hands. ^^;;; After 50 episodes they are STILL going west... and then dealing with the pain of killing demons is inconsistant. Sometimes they hurt knowing that a demon was once good, then sometimes they randomly kill dozens without caring, then some demons just seem to always be bad. ~_~;; That aside, it has good potential for character development, each character is endearing in their own way, the art is very very appealling. I prefer the manga a bit, just for the sake of not having all that damn filler... and despite being gorgeous, the Homura arc was just so freaking stupid. >_< What a waste of 25 episodes. I think Sanzo is my fave... I cosplayed Konzen, though ALL the Sanzo cosplayers at A-kon didn't know who Konzen was. ^^;;;;;;;; Anyway, I had a chained Goku monkey plush and that kept me happy. ^.^
08-02-2003, 04:55 PM
AHHHHHH!! I LOVE Saiyuki!! Specially Gojyo...*_*
mmm Yaoi goodness (GojyoxHakkai) ^_^ *Big fan*
But i adore Saiyuki! the op.theme is one of my faves.
I don't really like the english dubbing of saiyuki....
08-06-2003, 05:20 PM
i think the dub is accutally good. the themes ending and intro r really good and get u hooked. genjo sanzo... <drool> my fav.
08-06-2003, 05:33 PM
I like the dub too surprisingly, though I'm still loyal to the original.
Mmm.. My Goku costume is almost done!
I just have the cape left to do then stick the pieces that need to be stuck all together!
I'm gonna have fun harassing my Kougaiji >D..
Though deep down I really want to be Hakkai...:/
Anyone else have RELOAD yet?
08-06-2003, 07:30 PM
Saiyuki's so great. I've only seen about half of all the episodes so far, and I really want to get a hold of the mangas and such (that's what Otakon is for ^^ ) but I think they did a pretty decent job with the dubbing--nothing to complain about though I'm not the biggest fan of Sanzo's seiyuu (both American / Japanese) Hakkai is definately one of my alltime favorite anime chars and the provider of my favorite quote EVER:
*blows whistle at Gojyo* "Toooo much information"
08-06-2003, 08:01 PM
Hakkai is tied as favorite of all time with Seiichiro Aoki ^^;;
Yes I have a thing for the tall,mature brunettes with glasses xD
I've got a hold of all the mangas so far but am still working on the DvDs~ The artbooks I have though... so expensive, but the pictures are just jaw dropping.
My favorite so far would have to be Salty Dog over the backgammon's.. despite the lacking of many Hakkai pics! ;-;
Anyone here ever watched Wild adapter Yet? I have a Tokito cosplay in progress~ ^^
08-07-2003, 12:20 AM
Heh...I guess my favorite Saiyuki people would have to be Son Goku (so damn CUTE!) and Hakkai. My sister is more of a Saiyuki fan than I am. :\ I think the problem with the anime is that you could've cut, like, 25 episodes of filler and have what was left with money left over to have - gasp! - actual animation for the fight sequences. :P
But damn, Saiyuki's music is catchy. OO *huggles her Goku plushie* Plus the artwork in the manga is just downright lovely - one of the artists I look up to. XD
As for the dub: eh, I've only seen the first episode dubbed and I was horrified. Hakkai was...ew. He turned into a foul-mouthed surfer-punk. ;_; Goku was pretty good...just...eck. Can't get over Hakkai.
09-29-2003, 09:27 PM
I've been watching it since I got on demand a month ago, and I'm now trying to buy the whole series. XD I <3 the Goku-ness!! & at first Gojyo looked kinda evil & scary in the opening, but I <3 him too now. Maybe I'll be Lirin next year or something. ^^
10-01-2003, 05:36 PM
The dubbing is alright..I can deal with it....And i do agree..hakkais' voice is good, but....for hakkai's kind of character..ehhh...Anywayz.
I'm thinking about cosplaying as hakuryuu ^^;; thats a maybe though.
10-01-2003, 08:26 PM
Anyone else have RELOAD yet?
I have the first volume... nothing remarkable though. I must say, I'm in love with my copy of Stigma though... she has an interesting layout style in that one-shot manga. Pretty. *_* Pricy, but lovely. *continues to idly hug onto Sanzo*
10-03-2003, 04:01 PM
NEW NEWS! Check out this site: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/b-bansen/index.html Apparently Saiyuki Reload is coming out this month on TV! ^o^ Hopefully they'll be more faithful to the manga this time around... looks like it's exactly the same production team though. Only one with any change is Gojyo who is wearing the new outfit from Reload plus his hair isn't such an insanely bright shade of red anymore. ^^;; Plus... more DiGi Charat, Naruto, Prince of Tennis, and other series too.
Just watched it... the new opening sucks (Japanese Rap ~_~)... the CGI is worse than before. ~_~;; There is some slight changes in Hakkai and Goku's outfits too. ^^;; The ED song isn't so bad if you don't fall asleep during it... the visuals are practically a mirror image of the first Weiss Kruez ending but sadly they aren't even that decent. ~_~ It's almost worth downloading for the little extra at the end... but not really. *cries* Why do my fave series become such sucky anime?! ;_;
10-20-2003, 03:33 AM
My fav's Gojyo!! GOJYO GOJYO GOJYO GOJYOOOOO!!! (look my domain: www.shagojyo.net ) But I love Sanzo too, what a hottie monk, mm...
I'm working in Gojyo's Reload costume for this Christmas, but I already have some Saiyűki's costumes in my wardrove, look to my gallery if you want
10-20-2003, 11:12 AM
Gojyo reminds me of yoji. nice site
10-20-2003, 03:40 PM
Lirin- I LOVE Your Site!!! hehe <----fave is....GOJYO. ^______^..he's a lil hottie.
10-21-2003, 11:52 PM
Haha, yeah Saiyuki is really good, though repetitiive(much like the origianl Journey to the West story). I havent real much of the manga, but ive seen all there is to see of the series, movies interactive and what ever is out of the RELOAD series. im currently working on Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai costumes for my friends so i can have the entire Saiyuki group to gowith my Sanzo costume.
10-29-2003, 05:06 PM
If I see any of you at Otakon next year you I'll be the Lirin w/ a big Sanzo plushie.....probably stalking you. XD
