Same here, I think my dad is getting more into it but I know my mom loves watching anime. I finished showing her Angelic Layer over Thanskgiving break and plan on finishing FY, AnC, and Furuba over Christmas. :D

My mom watches some stuff. She really liked Vampire Hunter D....I don't think she's seen Bloodlust yet. (I need to remedy that.) But she wasn't too fond of Slayers. (She only saw the Slayers movie.)

I live in Kansas....... My parents don't know what anime is. have no interest in learning about it. leave the room when i start watching it. Don't listen when i talk about it!! Same with most of my friends here! I go around acting like some of the characters and no one knows why i start laughing my butt off!!! it can get very very frustrating. THANK GOODNESS I found this place! It's my home away from home! I love you guys..... *crying for joy*

my parents just see it as cartoons and is meant for kids. they've always been like that. and besides, they don't really bother watching or researching any of it. but Morrissey over there is just about as old as my grandfather and we sometimes watch anime together with a whole buncha other friends, does that count??

hm.. my mom keeps saying random japanese phrases every time she sees me watching it.. and my dad, after reading two manga of Blade of the Immortal and one Maison Ikkoku manga, has decided that ALL anime is extreme violence, rape, or otherwise sexually oriented.. kinda like the old japanese samurai movies my grandmother used to watch.. -sigh-

Well, I'm one of those "mutant" parents:

Been watching anime since I can remember & my daughter has been watching since birth.....

Still playing video games to this day (every system known to man except X-box & Game Cube, but give me time...)

Read manga & comic books to her then unborn daughter & still reads with her....

Has taken said daughter to anime & comic book cons, and has cosplayed with her (Our next con is Anime Central 2003)....

Collects action figures, toys & 80's stuff...

Has large group of friends that are in the same things as us...

My belief is: "If the bills are paid, there's food in the house & just about damn near everything else is OK, LET ME HAVE MY FUN!"

My parents don't care. They think I'm crazy. I remember watching the Slayers OVAs with my father in the room. He turned around on one of the Naga parts where her breasts made that sproing sound and she started to laugh. He just gave me the weirdest look and turned back to his spider game. -_-;;;

My grandmother reads my manga though... ::runs off to shove Love Hina manga into closet::

I can actually watch my dad recoil when I watch subtitled animes. The well endowed woman with child-like voices creep him out. He's also wigged by nudity in cartoons. To him a cartoon is WB or disney, and sexy animation was jessica Rabbit. As for my mother, she does what she does for 99.9% of my hobbies. Ignores it and pretends it doesn't exist.

my parents are uber conservative christians and view pretty much anything that doesn't relate to church and god as a waste of time. they really hate anime(as well as most everything else i like). i nearly got kicked out of home when i was in highschool simply because of my anime.

My whole family really likes anime. My mom helps me with my costumes, and we watch Card Captor Sakura together with my little sister (who is obsessed with it). It was actually my dad that got me into anime in the beginning, about 5 years ago when we watched Akira and the like and argued over meanings and symbolism. Right now I'm the only manga reader though, I watch the most out of my family, and I'm the only one who has gone to cons.

Yes, I admit it, I've been watching anime & reading manga as well as making / wearing costumes just about all my life, and I corrupted my KIDS with anime and cosplay (and CROSSplay, hehe)!!

My parents just shake their heads while I dish out another 100 bucks for three DVDs. ^^;; They think it's okay, and as long as I don't force them to watch it, they don't mind and as long as I don't beg them for DVDs. n.n;; Nnn..but if I let them watch it, I wouldn't be able to watch anime anymore!

My dad's the more understanding though, he likes to go to conventions and watch the cosplayers! My mom just gets a disturbed look the first time a guy in a fuku walks by.^o^ She might need therapy!

Well I like my mom...and although she doesn't watch anime, she does help me with my costumes. I think it more has to do with me being away at school most of the year and she's just excited to do stuff with me.

My dad just thinks it's a waste of money. (Luckily I have WizzyWig nearby with cheap dvds...whoohoo!)

And my brother just thinks I'm really weird...athough I am, so it doesn't count.

My parents don't seem to mind. At the beginning they thought I was being childish for watching "Cartoons" but when I became a more distinct otaku, they learned to live with it. Now its pretty much an everyday thing, even though my parents don't like to watch it, they don't tell me to turn it off or anything, and my mom seems pretty enthusiastic about cosplaying. When they went to the first con with me they said I shouldn't cosplay because I would look silly, when they got there they took it back XD! They have no problem with going to more cons though, they just drive me there and leave XD but my dad got a few chuckles (okay MORE then a few) at the male Sailor Scouts.

As someone else said (too lazy to look), they're just glad I'm watching anime instead of running around the streets doing drugs or something screwed up like that. NEVER! But I will admit, anime is probably more addictive then drugs hehehehe XD!

My dad doesn't mind, he's actually kinda cool with it and helps feed my anime addiction at times. My mom'll have nothing to do with it though >_<

She says it's just a phase and in a few years, I won't be into it anymore, eh heh (yeah right!) But she helps me with cosplay and if I'm a little low on the cash, I manage to get her to buy fabric for me. It's amazing how much I've seemed to get away with in the way of fabric shopping with her O_o

And both my parents agree about their daughter (me)

1. She's not doing drugs or out having mad sex with everyone.

2. Since she doesn't cook or do laundry, she IS learning to sew, which could prove useful in later years....

my dad is always making fun of sailor moon and my mom and my older bros. . .its really annoying! when i watch it my dad sings the theme song(not to mention he sings it wrong). this is how it is according to him:
Fighting fire by midnight, winning love by daylight
never running from a Fish Fight(??) thats why they call me sailor moon! *sigh*

Heh ^_^ My dad has been helping me quite a bit with my props for my costumes, and he seems to have fun, so I'm glad for that. But my mom, too, has said it was just a phase and I'd get over it (I also say to her "yeah, right.") She doesn't condemn me for it though. She actually copies Naga's laugh when I imitate her. XD

I got really lucky....both my parents would have totally wigged if it werent for the fact that both me and my brother got into it at the same time....then it was two against two so it was ok. Over the years they've almost gotten used to it; I almost got my mom to watch Princess Mononoke (but the decapitation thru her off....gah) and I got my dad to watch the infamous "Mushroom" episode of cowboy bebop (on CN so it was in english), which he enjoyed . My mom totaly loves that I am sewing and gets cosplay (mad props to her, because lets face it, thats wierder than just watching anime). She helps me alot too, and looks for fabric for me if I am looking for a perticuar kind (she came home one day with just the right amount of red satin ribbon for my vampire princess miyu costume!! It was so great)
So basically they get it and are ok with it. I give them props!

No one in my house KNOWs what anime is. my mom isnt a very good sew er but she did give me some advice for cosplaying. I told her aobut Anime boston and me dressing up and all she said was "Cool" with NO exclamation mark. my parents do not mix well with anime. . .they dont know what mangas are. But they are fascinated by my site. Here is a quote from my parentsa(i have 2 older brothers so u know) : "We did this all the time to your brothers. We annoyed them when they liked something. We annoyed them until they didn't find interest in it anymore* smile* *laugh* " or something like that. . .Well im not gonna give up anime that easily cuz I have my own DVD player now!

My parents are weird about anime. When I was younger and just casually watched, they didn't mind. In about 5th or 6th grade when it became a true obsession, my dad started to hate it. He wants me to stop spending too much time "watching those Japanese Cartoons"-except yelled in Thai. My mom will joke about my studying habits and saying things such as "If your tests tommorow were on the Japanese cartoons you watch then you would be the top in your class, but they aren't so go STUDY!" - also said in Thai. If I am watching a dvd or my mom just happens to be in my room watching anime on my computer, my mom will watch too, but not if my dad is home. My dad is the one who mainly thinks I am insane. The getting into cosplay thing doesn't help either. When these things are said to me, I reply, "At least it isn't a harmful addiction like drugs!"
- my dad then ignores me.
- my mom agrees with me, "such a good daughter, go clean the house."
^-^ Ah well teenagers will be teenagers!:crylaugh:

I honestly don't know what my parents think. I didn't get into anime until I moved out of the house. I know that my dad's boss's daughter is big into anime, and he flew her on his private jet just to goto Otakon. I know she cosplays too. The ride in the jet cost $10,000 round trip. Now that otaku for you.

My parents seem to be very uncomfortable around anime. I have never asked them or made them watch anime.. I never tell them anything about it. I know dad visits web pages I make quite often, and he wants me to make some kind of web publishing business in this over-saturated market. I guess one of these days I will get around to asking my parents what they think.. but I'm not really all that interested in knowing.

My parents have always ridiculed my interest in anime. But ever since I printed out a copy of this forum and showed it to my mother, she's been taking a new interest in anime.

Well, my parents are okay with it. My Grandparents only know that I go to a convention about Japanese Animation. They don't know about the cosplay part. ^^;
My Dad doesn't really care about it. While we were in Japan last year, we went into anime stores and he was looking around at the posters. And he played some UFO catcher games but that is about it. But I give him credit for taking time from his business trips to look for Doremi items while in Japan. I wanted some Doremi dolls and he had his clients help him look for them ^^
Big thanks to my Mom. She is the one who truly supportive. She is the one who takes me to cons/takes photos/helps with cosplay and buys the anime. But since I now have a bank account she says "now you pay for it". But she does want me to stop cosplaying when I graduate from Junior College.

My parents are super cool with me and my anime! ^.^ My mom takes me to go buy my manga and DVDs, and doesn't mind me ordering fansubs and stuff like that. My Dad always tells me when he sees one on TV, just incase I hadn't seen it yet. He even tries to learn stuff about it. (He was really proud of himself when he told me that he read that Yu-Gi-Oh! started out as a Manga! :3) And my parents usually buy me Anime stuff when they go birthday or Christmas shopping. ^^

As for cons, they're even MORE fantastic. My dad offered to take me and three of my friends to Ani-Magic in 2001. We only stayed for one day, but the fact he drove us, and we stayed over-night was just a great gesture. Now my Mom takes my best friend and I to cons. She pays for the gas and the room, too. While my friend and I go out and do our thing she chills in the room and helps us with our cosplay, or goes shopping.

With cosplay, it's great too. She takes my friend and I on Cosplay-Shopping-Trips, which are tons of fun, since she knows really cool places! My mom is extremely creative, so she'll make parts of my costumes. (She made my bandana for Anna from Shaman King SOOOO awesome!) She even paid for half of the Syaoran Li cosplay, and the wig for Shuichi I got for Ani-Magic 2002. I luv my parents to death! She's always willing to help out with stuff like that.

My mom doesn't like to watch it, (she says the girls in it talk too whiney)... and my dad isn't too crazy about it unless it has subtitles or captions (He doesn't hear well, so he can't lip read animation.) but he likes stuff like DBZ and Dual! ^_^ My Grandmother watched some Trigun with me, and she likes it when Vash is "crying in French". My grandfather helps me pay for my cosplay, and even my Aunt offers me transportation to San Fransisco for Manga splurges and con-ness.

So my family's philosophy on my anime addictions is- I get good grades, I get anime/con/cosplay. ^_^ I like that plan.

Yeah... I luv my family. ^^

WELL, my dad likes all the fighting animes, but my mom's a girly prep like my sis. They think they're cartoons. My sis [13] watches cartoons, but only american. My Dad enjoys the action channel animes, but it's not like he'll go research it or anything like that. He just watches the animes that have action. He doesn't even KNOW they're animes. He tells me that i just ahve gotten into more "violent cartoons". [this happened when i was watching Akira]

My kids are going to probably be cosplayers from birth. I'm lucky my guy is obsessed with this stuff like me. Our family is going to be so weird.

Anyway, I can't tell my mom that their are things like homosexuality and stuff in it. She walked in while I was watching Ranma just as Akane walks in on Ranma in the shower. Her jaw dropped at just the nudity portion of it. If she ever saw scenes from the Utena movie she'd die.

My mom still calls it "that Japanese stuff". Also she assumes I must speak Japanese fluently. "How do you say this in Japanese?" Uh.. I can only greet you, say thank you, and apologize. Sorry ma!

My parents are cool with it.

They watched blue submarine no.6 with me when it was on tv and they both liked Princess Mononoke. My mom even took me to see the Escaflowne movie and she still can't get over how good Spirited Away was. My dad still likes to make fun of few of them like Gundum Wing (Goddamn Wing) and Dragonball Z(Dragonbutt). My mom even took me to my first anime convention and she said she had fun. ^_^

My Grandma thinks its cool that I can speak some japanese (I'm on my second year in school). She was going through a Carcaptor manga and asking my what they were saying. It was really funny when she was trying to pronounce words out of my Japanese dictionary ^_^. She also helps me sew my costumes.

Sounds like your parents have just gotten a bad impression from anime (they hear on the news that some of it is pornographic, and think that all of it must be...). I'm one of those uber conservative Christians, as many would describe me, yet i don't really have a problem with anime as long as its tasteful and creative (meaning anything that isn't hentai in any way, shape or form, such as Slayers, Inu Yasha, Lain, Record of Lodoss War, etc...). Aside from the perverse side of anime, there are only a few other things that bother me about it, like how obsessed people can become (rabid fangirls, anyone?), and how cliche the plots can be (as well as the character archetypes). However, i don't think all of it is terrible, but you have to admit, a good amount of it has to be watched out for... Not saying that justifies your parents behavior, though. -_- They shouldn't judge anime until they study it... Just please don't think that if someone is Christian they're inherantly against anime... Most of us are just against certain aspects of it, certain aspects that can be found in almost all forms of media...

By the way, my parents are indifferent to it. The only aspect they encourage is my artwork, which is only loosely based on certain anime characteristics. My mom is somewhat interested in some anime titles, but usually insists that they're just cartoons. My dad doesn't show much interest at all, yet seems to be of the impression that almost all anime is dirty (and unfortunately, the majority of it is). However, he likes to mock the clean things that i like... Like when i was little and watched the original Dragon Ball (he would say that Goku lost a fight with one of those perming domes you find at a salon, or lawn chipper, or a vaccuum cleaner... cheesey jokes...). Mom sometimes gives me money to buy a vhs tape or two, but i usually fund my hobbies by myself... Haven't attempted to make a costume yet, and if i did i wouldn't wear it, just sell it or something... but i'm pretty sure Mom would insist that i have too much time on my hands or that i'm crazy (neither of which i could argue with), but both she and my father would find it interesting at the same time...

My dad comes with me to all the conventions and is a big help for our club. He will occationally sit down and watch CCS or OMG with me. He did memorize all 150 pokemon if that counts. My mom on the other hand really has no interest in anime. Of corse I'm adopted so they try to take interests although sometimes it doesn't accually happen.
