We have the most overrated games, but what games do you think aren't recognized enough?

They're all out there, those games that you LOVE so much, but they never got that much hype and you wish that more people would open their minds and play it!

It's kinda sad when you play a game, love it, and tell your gaming friends, and they're like "What?!"

At the moment, my favorite underrated game is Ico. Personally, I think it was an absolutely beautiful and heartfelt game with really unique gameplay.

I think the hideous boxart was to blame >_< I'm sure if they had kept the Japanese boxart, it might have been a little more successful?

So people, what do you think?

IQ- this addicting little puzzle game for the PSX. I've wasted so many hours defeating that game. It's simplistic but can also be very difficult, has excellent music, and the graphics are adequate given the premise. Somehow, practically no one I've ever met has played it! I don't think it was advertised much (at all??) when it first came out- I only knew about it thanks to a demo disc with some magazine I bought.

Besides that, the original Suikoden. Practically everyone who's played it knows what a fabulous game it was, but so few people have played it! ^^ Hopefully, Suikoden 3 will revive interest in the older games.

SplatterHouse 1,2,3 - the original Horror games. Hard but fun, and VERY bloody

Anachronox. Of course, I'm biased cuz I worked on it, but it truly was like Final Fantasy meets Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Eidos just let that sucker be dead on arrival. Worthless morons won't invest publicity in anything that isn't TOMB RAIDER.

Legend of Dragoon

I got addicted from a demo disc then I couldn't find it for months!
Okay so the graphics aren't as good as lets say FF, but the story is so cool.

Legend of Dragoon is awsome, I own it. Haschel is the man.

Dewprism, also known as Threads of Fate. Okage was also a very good game that deserves more credit.

Threads of Fate is a classic.
Raphsody: A Musical Adventure is one of the best PSX RPGs
Elder Scrolls series is the best game series ever.
RC Pro AM for the NES.
SNK vs. CAPCOM: Card Fighters Clash 2
Faselei
Puyo Puyo
Haunted House for the Atari 2600
Tecmo Bowl for the NES
Star Tropics for the NES
Crystalis for the GBC
Y's Book I&II for the Turbo Duo
Lords of thunder fort the Turbo Duo
All of the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna games
All of the Bonk games
Tricky Kick (hardest strategy game ever)

I have to question some of your list, Joe, because some of those games WERE widely appreciated back in the day. Which sports fan doesn't talk about Tecmo Bowl?

Maybe not in this circle of gamers but Xenogears wasn't appreciated by the gaming community as a whole.

And Rez for the PS2.

I mentioned Tecmo Bowl and the others because no one mentions them these days and are still great games.

The only footbal game I like is Tecmo Bowl. The only racing game I like is RC Pro AM. Star Tropics is pretty much a forgotton game as is Crystalis.

Raphsody is looked down by most RPGers. Puyo Puyo has a small but loyal fanbase.

99% of gamers never played Bonk and the TG-16 and Turbo Duo these days are very rare.

Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is the truist definition of a PC RPG in my eyes. But the series is barely played.

Joe

[Tangent] Uhhh, Tecmo Bowl HAS and ALWAYS WILL BE appreciated by sports gamers. Trust me. A LOT OF MY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS LOVED TECMO BOWL, my cousins LOVED TECMO BOWL, and probably my cousin's friends LOVED TECMO BOWL. Underrated? I don't think so.

Romance of the Three Kingdomes IV: My favorite of the series. It was a great game back in the day, but almost noboby new about it. Don't bother with the later romance games tho.

Ico: Not trying to steal the idea or anything, but this is one of the most beutifull games I have ever played. It's strange that a game with very little combat, and almost no vocals or text will stick with me forever, like a really good RPG.

7th Saga: Any huge RPG fan will know this game is the most difficult RPG in existance. I think that everybody should play through this game at least once.

Harvest Moon: Blows the Sims out of the water in my opinion. It does have a growing fan base, but most casual gamers don't know anything about it besides its name.

There are more underappreciated games, but that's all I can think of at 3:00 in the morning.

Okage is a great game. The character designs are really bizzare.

Two other great games are the first Klonao game and Skullmonkys. Both are very hard to find now.

I once saw that game for 20 dollars and I didn't buy it. *Stupid me!!!*

I have a few golden oldies that were unnoticed

Cyborg Justice (Sega Genesis, the only game I know where you can rip your opponent apart, then revive them or use their parts for your own purpose. :D)

Blaster Master (NES, I haven't played the Sega Version nor the PS Version. But the original rocked... even if it was harder than all get out.)

Ice Climbers (NES, old, simple, addictive)

Circus Charlie (NES, Yeah, I know, simple. But something about it... you can't leave until you jump over those monkeys or rode jumped through those hoops of fire...)

Clu-Clu land (NES, Actually, I only played this on the Famicom way back when. really cool puzzle game.)

Zone of the Enders (PS2, the only game where you're so fast, you can dodge between bullets. XD If that doesn't rock, I don't know what does.)

cyborg justice was a horrible horrible game.

Bahamut Lagoon(mostly because most us players have never played it). For Super Famicom.

Hoshigami, PSX. It had the best battle system of a war strat ever. none of this bull shit retardedly easy stuff. A REAL war start. If you didn't have good setups and plans you couldn't beat it, end of story.

The Entire Persona Series. psx blame sony for America never getting Innocent Sin. They denied atlus the release of the game for "the graphics aren't good enough". It is one of the best series out there.

Valis1-4. Multi platforms. Oh the memories of Valis and it's incredibly hard crap.

Friday the 13th on NES. To this date, no game has scared me as much as this game. It's still freaky to play. Impossible as hell to. I could barely kill jason twice, they expect you to do it three times? WTF...

Inindo Way of the Ninja on SNES. RPG + warstrat+ Japanese history... too good. Holding R to run 40363094536 times faster= too good as well.

I love Legend of Dragoon! The beginning was a bit slow and seems like it'll be cliche, but it has such a unique storyline! I love it! My avatar is me as Meru^_^

Fatal Frame and Ico rock too^_^

I think Shadow Hearts didn't get enough credit. That game was great! The storyline was intense, the graphics and battle system were really unique with an insanity meter and stuff. Also, the characters were very diverse and interesting. The only thing I didn't like was that you had to level up like a bastard to get enough money to pay for things.... ^_^;;

The Sega CD sequel to Out of this World, which I believe was called "Heart of Darkness" rocked. It was amazing, and now it's gone ...

Also, Sonic CD was pretty incredible. That one's appriciated by critics but no one has ever played it.

While we're at it, I think Alien 3 for the Super NES was pretty amazing. The best Alien game ever. And PSONE's Vagrant Story is overlooked because of its slow battle system. But it's a beaut!

The Sega CD had a bunch of nifty titles that most people sadly never got to play! Snatcher, Sonic CD, the original Lunar, and Shining Force CD. Yeah Sega CD. ^_^

I heard someone mention Rhapsody. I want to play that sooooo badly, it looks wonderful! I can't find a copy anywhere!! Anyone know a good retailer?

Celine
12-10-2002, 11:10 AM
Rhapsody is fantastic. ^_^

I've seen it occasionally still in stock in some stores... and you can always try and order it from a large used-game retailer like gamestop. But, if you can't find it elsewhere, there is always ebay.

*Puts down Shadow Hearts and Rhaspody on his list*

For some reason I avoided Rhaspody...Did they dub it Celine, or is the original Japanese voice still there?

Despite the fact that I've met a good number of male Rhapsody fans, I'm convinced that the game is aimed at girls. ^_^ That makes it really quite unique, but it's hard for me to convince my guy friends that it's a cool game and they should give it a try. Maybe you heard it was silly, super easy, super short, and girly? ^^ It is.

They did dub it, but you have the option to set the songs in either English or Japanese. I think that most of the English voices are quite good, and the lyrics are hilarious. I'd suggest watching all the songs in both languages for the most rewarding experience.

Xenogears! Great game, too much talking tho omg x_X but a favourite for sure! (best is taking down enemy gears with your little human fists)

Legend of Dragoon! I LOVED that game, it was pretty easy though, graphics might not have been the best but who cares, it was great, and Meru was frikkin awsome XD (her theme music...lmao) And I loved the battles with the Additions, I have NEVER enjoyed getting into battles more then I did in LoD, I was so obsessed with it, I mastered every addition for every character, and then mastered the one you get when you master all the others XD.

HARVEST MOON 64 DAMNIT! >< Lotsa people don't even know about the game, and those who do don't like it that much, but when I played that game I so so obsessed, I even made a plan on how much money I made daily and everything, omfg, without that game I would never even think of being a farmer, but when I did play it, I actually grew some tomatos IRL. Creeeeepy.

Kirby SuperStar!!! :D Sorry, It's just that's the game the probably originated the idea of Smash bros. Not one seems to realize that so I'd thought I'd mention it. :D

They need to put Metaknight as the next secret Smash bros character. He'll be like Kirby. Small, light weight. Except he carries a sword. XD

My underrated game right now is an Xbox game called O-TO-GI. Its sort of a hybrid of Gun Valkyrie and Shinobi... only 100x better than both and loaded on some sort of variant of that Citrus flavored Jolt Cola brand soda. Its gorgeous. Had a promotion tied in with Britney Spears for some reason.

Older stuff I love an old NES RPG-Racing game called Built to Win. That was a hoot and a half. So was a Genesis shooter called Trouble Shooter. There are a bunch of Saturn and DC games that come trickling to mind too.
