View Full Version : A question for Lolitas...

Does anyone actually dress lolita outside of conventions? I know that a lot of people make "Lolita Cosplays" for anime conventions, but does anyone who lurks around this forum make these clothes for going out and partying? Or _not_ cosplay?

I'm in Japan now, and it's AMAZING how awesome the people in Harajuku look. I mean, the clothes, make up (even if it is just to pale down your skin)... The hair. X_X I didn't know if anyone in the states wore anything wilder than ... >_<*... Hot Topic.

*gag, sweatdrop*

OK, so I shopped there.. But, after EVERYONE at my school constantly asked about it, I swore to start making my own clothes (^^;; Haven't gotten around to it, yet ^^;;)... But, yeah. The point of the post--

Does anyone dress Lolita normally? Would you suggest doing so to go to school? Or to save it for partying/hanging out with friends?

^^* Thankies!

I actually sometimes dress as gothic-lolita in school, but my teachers don't like it though -_-;;;.
I like to do it, because you will be the one who's popping out of the crowd. After several times no one will pay any attention to your dress, because they 'll get used to it ^^;;.
But sometimes people think that I am a satanic ~.~, there are always people who don't understand .

Same here about people thinking i'm Satanic. I dress Lolita if I have a chance, my school has such a strict dress code we practically wear uniforms, and not to mention my mom is the same way.

I dressed Lolita to school quite a few times. Everyone already thought I was weird, so it didn't make much of an impact. It was a lot of fun though. My friends and I loved to do it, especially when there were field trips. Now I just do it when the mood strikes me... well, except for at work. **;

I am starting to dress in lolita style for the weekends and concerts and such. I can't wear it to work because of what I do, but I do enjoy being able to express my self outside of work.

Koumori

For clubbing, sure. But I wouldn't wear it every day; it's too elaborate. I've found as I've gotten older that I like it if the time I spend preparing to leave the house can be measured in single digits. If I were going to go swan around Harakuju, that would be one thing; but since I'm just going around living my life... eh, not so much.

I go all out to some parties and clubs. Though sometimes when I go out to dinner or out w/my bf, I sometimes wear Lolita like shirts, boots, and accessories like jewlery and purses to dress up my jeans.

I've worn my petticoat and a lolita-esque outfit around school, but nothing pretty enough to wear to a convention, since I haven't made / bought any dresses.

kewl... I think e eryone at school knows I'm obsessed with anime stuff, they just don't know about lolita stuff...

I wore a little Loli-type outfit to school a few times..
All I got were compliments though..o.o;.. probably because it was more rustic country-cutey GL the EGL .. no major pale pale pale makeup and only one petticoat ^^;

sometimes, I'd meet my friends in town for a shopping trip in full lolita or gothic garbs. It's fun! Not that we favour attention, but it's cool to take candid shots of ourselves outside cosplay. xD

that sounds like a ton of fun. do have any pics online that I could see? a couple of my friends and I plan on getting into MM costumes and hitting a cemetary in MA, maybe around the boston area not sure since that's where they live. kind of like a mini-photoshoot.

Hmmm...I have to say I'm not lolita, cuz I don't really have the face structure to look like a little girl (but I do look like a feminine guy, which is great for cosplaying bishies. ^_-)
...but I do look pretty different, anyway, I'd say. When I was in college, I'd always wear blue lipstick whenever I had a speech or presentation to give. I also sometimes would spike my hair weird or dye it green or something when we had really conservative guest clients, too. I seemed to have a thing for fake scars, as well at times. I've got a lot of vintage hats I've restored and wear in public. As far as work goes....well, my store's weird, but I do wear random bits of cosplay quite frequently. And I've started to use pieces of parachutes, nylon netting, electronic crystals, fiber optic cable and other such odd things from work and incorporate them into jackets and skirts (just gotta remember to detach them before washing....)

And nothing wrong with shopping Hot Topic. It's okay to get some stuff from them. I've worn my 5-buckle 4-inch platform boots from there just about every day for the past 2 years. To date, I've gotten 267 comments of basically a positive nature (yes, I keep a tally on shocks....got 189 incredulous comments on the obscenely long silver fingernails that no one can believe are real, too. Hehe....people are impressed by so little.)

Yeah, it's easy to be visual daily with just little touches. You don't have to go all out glam every day -- save that for the big audiences -- because sleeping is a cool thing to do, and most days, over extravagance will just go under appreciated. Besides, subtlity is great for getting those fun double-takes.

katrinastrife
12-12-2002, 05:09 AM
^^;;

LOL at the sig, Yui...

Anyway, the only reason I don't like shoping at hot topic is because everyone knows I do, and they always bug me about it... ><;;

Yui
12-13-2002, 11:17 PM
Hehe...there's so many good lines from everywhere, I couldn't decide on which to use...so I thought I should just quote myself. ^_-

Yeah, I frequently am asked where I get my stuff, too. I don't say Hot Topic anymore either, because it -is- annoying having to tell everyone. I don't even say the Alley (cuz I guess it isn't -cool- to say you shop there anymore....got too touristy or something.) I like to tell people I made them instead. Or pulled them off one of my fresh corpses. Or something silly so they stop their assinine questioning. If you shop at Hot Topic, you already know where it came from....they don't have too much stock or anything you'd miss something. Anyone who doesn't, doesn't deserve to know.

katrinastrife
12-14-2002, 12:21 AM
LOL ^^;;

Sooo... Does anyone think that the lolita fashion would ever get ... popular? ... in the US? Or at least known outside of cosplay? o_O Maybe this is a silly question, cause it prolly won't...

Lilli
12-14-2002, 05:46 AM
._. *ponder* Hmmm.

Much as I may wish otherwise... Probably not. Barring some unforseen event, like an amazingly popular little pop star suddenly turns loli on us, or America magically realizes that 'Good Lord! Fashion designers/trends exist in this world ouside of New York, Paris and Milan? Well shut my mouth wide open!!!' then... the outlook isn't so good ^^;

Then again, at the risk of sounding cruel, Lolita fashion trends not taking hold in America... may be a blessing in disguise. I mean, the "OMG, ew. That's just... NO??" factor may vary depending on what region you're in, but when you look around at some of the people roaming the streets, would you really -want- to see them in lolita or elegant gothic lolita gear? ^^;

You guys are so god damn lucky.. you have Hot topic there. We hardly get lolita clothes here. Most of mine are deconstructed from normal street clothes or made from scratch. ><

Did you see the mag "Gothic & Lolita Bible" beofre? Highly recommanded if you're really interested in Gotchi & lolita clothes and life-style.

It's actually BEEN popular for a long time in certain subgroups of the goth scene. Which is probably about the level it's at in Japan - I don't think it's exactly mainstream there.

manaxmana
12-14-2002, 09:23 AM
I guess it started out in America. I did my school project on the gothic sub-culture once. It all stemmed from there. But it's probably got blown out of proportion in Japan these days. ><

You'll get stared at when you dress Goth or Lolita here. Gah...

very unlikey that there would be an americain idol who would be Lolita americain rock is so much diff than Japanese music after listening to J-rock I loose alot of respect for americain idols and there music its almost like they dont use most of the things you can do with your voice, however it would be nice to be able to walk out of the house in lolita gear and not have people accuse you of worshiping the satan around ever other corner lol

¬.¬ dancingvampire, I'm aware of the unlikelihood of a popular American Music Idol turning Loli. Regardless, I was saying that's pretty much what -I- think it would take, for a mainstream Lolita/Gothic Lolita fashion trend to take hold in America.

._. Odd, perhaps... That even when I've been dressed 'strangely' or had unorthodox hair coloring, (orange... purple... cherry red... that bizarre metallic copper color I've never been able to duplicate, and that unfortunate bout with neon pink tips resulting from the purple which we shall not speak of...) I've never had old people shoot me dirty/wary looks, been accused of 'worshipping satan' or even being one of those 'damned punk kids.' Who knows? Maybe it's because I'm not 15. Maybe it's your demeanor, or how you present yourself. Maybe even though I lived in a 'conservative' part of the country, it was close enough to a major city for them to find amusement in " 'Lilli's Technicolor Dream Hair!' Oooooh, what color will it be -this- month? The excitement never ends!!" ...and so forth. The cute little old ladies, especially, seemed very fond of my purple hair :3 (I miss it too...)

And not to seem like I'm picking on you, because honestly I've better things to do with my time, but as far as your sig... 'bye' in Italian is 'ciao' not 'chaio' (Ok, more formally 'bye' in Italian is 'arrivederci,' but ya, there's more than one word to say what you mean) Unless of course, you were trying to say some other word, in some other language. In which case, obviously, nevermind.

manaxmana... A Loli fashion show sounds like lots of fun :3

OK, another questions... In order to pull off a "lolita"esque hairstyle, must one have bangs??? Or at least some sort of fringe in the front? Layers? I have no bangs, but I wish I did... ^^;; I guess everyone in Harajuku does, or they spend LOTS of money on wigs, ne?

manaxmana

nah.. they do sell bangs extension. They only cost around US$8. ^_^ Anyway you dont really have to have bangs to look lolita. ^^

katrinastrife
12-23-2002, 07:15 AM
^^;; that's good. I've heard that they're more of a pain than they're worth... =^.^=

manaxmana

~_~ I dont live in US.. ^^;;;;;;;

Why dont you get a basic pattern and modufy it..? GLB has pattern pieces if I remember correctly.

Koumori
12-23-2002, 09:06 AM
The GLB pattern pieces tend to be for accessories and very basic things like circle skirts (though circle skirts are certainly a good place to start with). Anything else can be made to look "lolita" if you put enough trim on it, I think - ruffles, ribbons, lace, all that other stuff that makes me look like an idiot. :)

I haven't checked these out yet, since I haven't been able to get to the fabric store but a girl on another message board said that these patterns could be used as lolita ones, probably would have to add some lace and ribbons like usual. ^^;

If you're looking for patterns, actually some of the western style ruffle skirts can be modified for a GL look. Like shorten the skirt and put LOTS of ruffles and lace on it. Same goes for the tops.

As Koumori put it, putting lots of lace and frills on something black will give you the look. :)

Here are some links if you want pics from the GLBs (go google search!):
http://www.geocities.com/goth_loli1/glb01.html
http://www.neitherland.com/hyperballad/candy/files/gothiclolita/vol4/
http://www.blue-period.fsnet.co.uk/egl3.html

Also, ebay usually has GLBs for auction. I noticed that they go for about the price you would pay in a bookstore.

Sigh... I was all good until Lilli introduced me to the GLBs... now I'm busy sewing goth/punk clothing when I SHOULD be sewing costumes. :) Bad Lilli!

OMG. I was JUST having that conversation with a co-worker!

Edit: Hehe, as in like I was telling her how it seemed a common thing for Japanese cosplayers to randomly make costumes out of satin wether or not it was appropiate, and that I didn't understand it, and so it seemed as though some American cosplayers did it because the Japanese ones do it...

But how I didn't understand that some American seamstresses will make a loli costume from satin, when I don't recall ever actually seeing a loli costume done in satin O.o EGA, yes. EGL, not yet. Tons of pleather, though XD

I agree.. I'm not a very big fan of satin.. and it seems like they make their whole outfit soo shiny.. bleh.. only times I use shiny material is when I think it needs it or it is suppose to be that way..

Ooh thankies for links!! It's helping out alot.

Pleather is just COOLER than satin. I can't imagine having stuff like that made out of all satin. I might die. X_X

Like, my Mana costume. I don't think I'll be using SATIN for it. Geez. Shineeee!

But sometimes people think that I am a satanic ~.~, there are always people who don't understand .

Same thing happenes here. I'm always wearing my gothic lolita clothes. People just think I'm weird, but since I study and read alot, they leave me alone, and never bother me; well, except maybe my parents ^^U.

im much more fortunate since there is no strict dress code in school. ^__^ I change my hair color every so often ( i had red, pink, orange, violet, purple and now blonde)..and sometimes I dress in a gothic-lolita style....but only during cool days since the weather here is hot. ;p

the only problem here is that people act towards you differently when you dress in such a style. They think you're weird, or satanic. -___- Its a good thing my friends understand my style, and some people here think that its cool. ^__^ But mostly I dress up like a jrocker. ^___^

I go to an artists' college (SCAD) so it's no big deal for me to wear my lolita warbdrobe everyday. I go all out with the fans, gloves, cute basket, bonnet and, if it's cold, a muff or cape. Since its the south, most people are really friendly here and think I'm just some "cute Bo Peep" and ask for my picture...there are a LOT of tourists around here. My website has a few of my favorite lolita and gothic everyday outfits: www.sadwonderland.com. *shameless plug, sorry!*

I've been interested in Gothic music and clothing for a long time. I always wasn't quite sure what my look was. I enjoy dark clothing, but at the same time I like bright anime's and stuff like that as well. Nightime and pale skin. To me it always seemed like I was a walking contradiction.

Also, I always liked the clean, pale, no makeup type look. Not the outrageous, out of this world, punk/goth we have in America. (not that I dislike it, but its not my style).

After finding out just a little bit about the Gothic Lotita's and the Gothic scene in Japan in general I have decided to put together my OWN version of the look.

Hehe, clunky shoes and baby doll hair here I come.:):)

I have like, one issue of the Gothic and Lolita Bible, and it was a gift from a friend. *laughs*

But as for the question at hand: I don't really dress up in Elegant Gothic Lolita clothes. It's not that I'm afraid or whatnot, I've worn a Gothic Lolita ensemble to the mall before (pictures are in my gallery), and got a lot of attention for it (even got one guy who was relentlessly flirting with me to believe I was a man in drag, even though I was in hysterical laughter. XD). But I think I relate more to Elegant Gothic Aristocrat.

I've been considering options of clothing recently...I'd like a few lolita dresses in my wardrobe for the every now and then when I want to wear something cutesy. But were I to set a specific style for myself, it would be Elegant Gothic Aristocrat. I just feel a lot more comfortable in long flowy things and belle sleeves. ^^ Had I the clothes, yes I would wear then every day, without a doubt. ^^

And though it may be late, I completely agree with the satin thing. *x.X*;;

o.o It dosn't have to hurt when you bleach your hair. At Sally's Beauty Supply, they sell something you mix in with the bleach, it helps protect your scalp :3 No more pain, yay.

._. Gyah. Arrrrrrgh. Bleaching hair, even dark hair, really isn't that hard if you know what you're doing!!! I don't know why salons make such a big deal about it, maybe I'm missing something? It's never given me any problems T_T *uwuuu* Lilli will resist the urge to bring a bunch of bleaching and dying supplies to a con and set up a service to colour people's hair. Cause I'm not a cosmetologist ._. Hehe, I'm just good at turning hair fun colours :3

hey lilli..

its good that in that salon they have this something that they mix with the bleach..but here...gah! It such a pain. And since Im Asian with deep black hair...it takes long before my hair turns blonde or light brown. I still have to put a blonde hair colour to make it really satick. I just hate it when my hair grows..there will be black hair part again that sticks out. GAh...

Salons hate it when you damage your hair..I went to different salons when I wanted my hair to beocme purple but they wouldnt want to do it, since they said my hair is already damaged and stuff. (I had red hair with violet ends back then). And they said that the purple wont mix with my red dyed hair...so I just did it myself. And it turned out good...until my hair started growing again..bummer.. -_-"""

now its my 6th hair color change..Im planning to make it platinum blonde for my pictorial this June. ^__^

:3 Hehe, ya, that stuff they mix with the bleach to make it not hurt is what I was talking about. You can buy it toooo.

Tips! (If you want)

._. If you're using like... a kit from Hot Topic or some store like that, yeah, it's gonna take you forever to get your hair a decently dyable shade. Since you have 'ethnic' hair, and it sounds like it's pretty resistant to bleach, you may want to consider using a level 40 developer. Also you'll want to add some red/gold corrector. It will help with the brassy... well, red/gold tones that your hair tends to turn when you bleach it.

Also, if you're dying your hair a "fun" color like Red, Blue, Purple, whatever, you're MUCH better off not dying it blond first, if you can avoid it ^^; Sometimes, dyes don't react well with each other. Also you're layering a dye over another, and the color likely won't be as true.

But yeah. It's definitely possible to get your hair light, without torching it ._. (a-la chemically singed Gackt Vanilla style) Hehe, I've done my own hair more times than I can count, (but I don't count, cause I'm... uber-white.) bleached my bf's Italian hair out to blond two or three times (and then he looks disturbingly like Spike from Buffy T_T uwuuu) and also a nice little dark brown-haired guy I know whose hair is more like fur than anything else, hehe. I turn his hair FREAKIN red, it makes him happy :3

So ya, hair always comes blond, sooner or later. The problem with that stuff they sell in the little plastic bubble-cases is that more often than not, the developer is level 25 or the "ultra" kit might have 30. woo. Which is great, for someone like me with light, fine hair that bleaches out in 10 minutes. But if you have thick, dark hair, it'll take a bit more than that ^^;;

^^; Hehe, then again, if you're bleaching out a previous color, that can be a bit trickier. I remember I used a bad dye once. It stained my hair pink. For a year. I finally got pissed/desperate, and bleached it to get rid of the pink... Turned my blond hair nearly white... and the Pink didn't come out T_T *goes off to sob in a corner*

XD Coming to Anime Boston this weekend? I'll bleach ya white XD MUAHAHAHAHA!!! *cough hack hack*

._. If your hair is truly damaged, might I recommend an intensive conditioning treatment? Maybe some nice hot oil once a week or so :3 Hmmmm.

riasa_hideto
04-29-2003, 07:09 AM
waaahh!! I dont live in the US!!

*sniff sniff*

but my hair got a litttle pale!! More like a really really light blonde..though what im trying to achieve is Hyde's platinum blonde look..the really really white hair...

hahaha! I wish its not summer here so I can wear my jrock clothes! But for now, its summery clothes for me...bummer

but yea i kinda keep it on a low level when at school so i dont draw attechin to myself like head decorations, or cool ruffled sox, or mostly the shirts. and i sometimes cross dress if i feel like it.

but when i go out i go out full bloom ! i have done lolita before i even knew really what it was ! i just kinda wore cloths that resembled the frenchmaid vamprie cult stuff.

I dress lolita most of the time.. I guess not really gothic lolita. It's more like a sweet lolita style. Most the stuff I wear is pink or cream coloured with lace and frills. My favourite peice of clothing is a short cape with a hood with bunny ears. It's pink and so soft, and has little strawberries on it. I do get strange looks, but some older women think its really sweet that I dress like that. My grandmother thinks it's great, and kids at school think its cool. I don't do a really pale face, though. I usually don't wear a lot of make-up. ^^;; I get most of my stuff from BTSSB though.. <3

Sooo... Does anyone think that the lolita fashion would ever get ... popular? ... in the US? Or at least known outside of cosplay? o_O Maybe this is a silly question, cause it prolly won't...

I have a feeling that the ashion will probably be made known about in the U.S. whether is will become a huge fashion trend, that's up to the citizens here.

Well, that's another thing I'm scared about is the fact that people in other countries will mess up the whole idea of lolita and try to make it original (which is good), but it won't be lolita.

I dress in Gothic lolita all the time lol It draws so many mixed reactions!..Some poeple will give me compliments on how nice I look (or in sweet lolitas case, cute xD! ) and others will call me a freak! So I guess you just have to get used to the thought that outside of convetions, people aren't always so nice -_-;;. But don't let that stop you!!

About the school thing...
I wore mine to school a few times but stopped because everytime I did people would ask stupid questions and call me horrible names! :sulk: But it really just depends on who you hang out with and how accepting people in your school are!

P.S. Your so lucky to go to Japan!! Im planning to study there in about 2 years!

Well, that's another thing I'm scared about is the fact that people in other countries will mess up the whole idea of lolita and try to make it original (which is good), but it won't be lolita.

Plus Lolita is a lifestyle to many people and if fashion got a hold of it, it would be alot harder for people to see it for what it really is! Hard for me to explain, but It's kinda what Gwen did with her Harajuku lovers line( not a big fan ) It doesn't represent what Japanese street style is all about, it's not just bright colors and some cute animals. ( Im no expert of course )..

lol Sorry for my ramblings xD! I just think lolita should stay off of the big fashion markets :geek:

My favourite peice of clothing is a short cape with a hood with bunny ears. It's pink and so soft, and has little strawberries on it. I do get strange looks, but some older women think its really sweet that I dress like that. My grandmother thinks it's great, and kids at school think its cool. I don't do a really pale face, though. I usually don't wear a lot of make-up. ^^;; I get most of my stuff from BTSSB though.. <3

lol I know what you mean by that! I have older women come up to me all the time telling me how cute I look, or in the case of EGL how grown up I look, but the kids my age don't really like it...Which is weird I thought it was the other way around x.x!

That cape sounds really cute!

the airport that i went to school at in eastern michigan university didn't like girls so they tried everything to chase me out. and when i started getting sick of it i started playing on there instructions to me and they couldn't argue to much cause it was what they told me.

i wore my full lolita dress and accessorries to the wed class (not in a plane in class) when they told me i needed to dress nicer. then they said i needed to where black slacks and a button up top with a collar. so i got a short sleeve button up lolita top with a round collar that had a little ribbon to tie. it was very lacey and had ornate buttons. they weren't happy with either.

but also proir to this they had me change my whole woredrobe 4 times. and each time i followed their instructions exactly. and it was never good enough then taking away my clean equipment (germaphobe) and forcing me to use the shared equipment with peoples spit and puke and who knows what else on it, just kinda forced me over a line to make there lives wretched with my lolita.
