View Full Version : Which is Best? XB, PS2, GC

12-08-2002, 10:27 PM
Ok I'm going to buy either a PS2, XBox, Dreamcast, or GameCube but I was wondering if anyone knows what the differences are between them? Which one has more games or better games? What are the better games? What are the specs.? Also is there anything else coming out soon that I should wait for? Thanx a bunch!!

12-08-2002, 10:43 PM
So far, it looks like PS2 has the best games in my opinion. But I'm going to get a Gamecube since the resident evil games are coming only for GC.

12-08-2002, 10:56 PM
All three systems have their merits. I'd like to own them all, but financially that is impossible for me. It really depends on what you are looking for- is there a particular genre, series, or company that you really enjoy? Right now, the PS2 has a considerably larger library than the other two, so it's a safe choice, in my opinion, if you are really unsure. ^_^

You might also want to read these other threads which are somewhat related to your question:

12-08-2002, 10:59 PM
I'll check those threads out! thanks for your help. I like a wide variety of games but want to know alot more about each system before I decide.

12-08-2002, 11:01 PM
I have a GC and Xbox. In my opinion ps2 only has "better" games because it came out a year before the others. Not that I don't want one...I do!

My advice would be to look at some gaming websites. See what games are out there and whats coming out later. The systems are pretty comparable otherwise.
Cool games for all systems:
PS2: .hack, Contra, GTA (although i still prefer the first one)...those Final...gah..can't remember the name.
xbox: panzaar dragoon, Fable (project ego), Jet Set Radio Future
GC: mario sunshine, animal crossing can be quite addicting, eternal darkness

But Soul Calibur 2 is coming out for all the platforms...and that's all that really matters

12-08-2002, 11:02 PM
Statistically, the PS2 has better games, if you look at how well they are selling. Yes, the PS2 is still has lots of games that are selling better than X-box or GC games. Last I knew, the only X-box game that made it into the top three for one month was Halo.

12-08-2002, 11:04 PM
Game Cube. With out a doubt. Nothing is more fun then playing Melee when your ass is plastered to the wall.

12-08-2002, 11:05 PM
And everyone hates the xbox for some reason...but I love mine.

:hugs giant contraption:
You don't need memory cards do you...no you don't...weeweefifigigi

12-08-2002, 11:06 PM
yeah, but there's like 2 games worth playing on the XBox, the rest is shit.

12-08-2002, 11:07 PM
i'd suggest a PS2 it has a lot of really good games and a lot of good games that are coming out. you can play all your old playstation games as well.

plus you can play dvd's without buying extra components

12-08-2002, 11:09 PM
ok.. so PS2 is the best! Oh wait.. i mean Game Cube is the bomb!! Oh wait... It has to be XBox!!!! *so confused* think I'll wait for more entries....Thanx!

So far I'm going toward good old PS2

12-08-2002, 11:15 PM
Well I don't want to hear any complaining when Fable comes out. I get enough of that from a friend. If it looks half as good when it comes out as it did last time I saw a preview... :takes a cold shower: I think most people hate the xbox because its not Japanese. Hey..I don't really like Microsoft either...but the system and its games rock.

And anyways...I hate FF....I only want a ps2 for .hack and Contra...mmm contra.

But again I will repeat: All the systems are the same except for games...go with what you like. Although at this rate...you'll only get like 2 years on your ps2 before the ps3 comes out.

Ooh! and kinda off topic...I heard that the GC is going to be the last console nintendo puts out...then they are going thirdparty like sega. Anyone hear about this?

12-08-2002, 11:18 PM
I have 2 out of the three (Gamecube and PS2) and will soon have an X-box, but I definatly like the PS2 the best out of the three for the following reasons:

PS2 has the best set of fighters (Tekken 4, VF4)
PS2 has the best racing games (Twisted Metal Black, NFS, GT3)
PS2 has the best RPGs (FFX, Sukoden)
PS2 has the best action games (Devil May Cry, GTA)
PS2 has the best default controller (great for all kinds of games, and is definatly the best of the three for twitchy games like Tony Hawk)
PS2 can play PS1 games
PS2 can play DVDs (although X-box is better quality DVD player)
PS2 has the largest selection of games (because it's the oldest of the tree, and if you include all of the PS1 games...)
PS2 has yet to crap out on me (my Gamecube died on me a month after purchase, and a friend of classmate's X-box died on him also).

12-08-2002, 11:21 PM
ahhh thanx Sirami!!!

12-08-2002, 11:21 PM
I have yet to be dissapointed with my PS2. I have about 10 games for it and not one below what it should for how much I paid for it. Persoanlly, I live in the now, and right now, there's less then shit for X-Box, whether is Japanese for Martian, there are *no* games, save for DoA3 that are even worth the money you pay for it, memory card or not. Whatever happens in 2 years happens in 2 years, right now the PS2 is dominating all and sitting here bitching about it really gets ya no where.

12-08-2002, 11:35 PM
Definitly agree with Sirami on the controller thing. Both the GC and Xbox controller bite configuration wise. The ps controller is like perfection. The GC controller has the one big butten just there....I don't think it will be good for fighters. And the normal xbox controller is huge....I like my madkatz one...and a friend has the small one...he says it rocks. Ooh! but the GC has the wavebird! It is the coolest thing ever. It works perfectly...and I sit in weird positions.

After Soul Calibur I can no longer play tekken....but 2 will be on all three so thats fine. I don't particularly like VF but i think thats because I suck at it...

Shenmue 2 is out on xbox...originally for DC...but never brought to the US. I haven't got it yet...but I want it! Friend raves about it...but he's a total DC nerd. Need to stop buying fabric and buy more games!

And Metroid Prime is supposedly awesome...not really into 1st person shooters...but I might change that for Samus.

I feel like the Ross Perot of video games. Can I finish!

12-08-2002, 11:55 PM
DUDE, yet another reason the Game Cube ownz all... ::drools:: Gotta love it when the games you grew up with become the shit games when you're older *-* I love Nintendo...

12-08-2002, 11:56 PM
I would go with a Gamecube. There are not as many games for it as PS2, but the games they do have are all really good. Especially the ones coming from Nintendos internal teams. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox Adventures, Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, Wave Race, etc. Not to mention that Gamecube will be getting a Final Fantasy game sometime next year.

12-08-2002, 11:56 PM
I wouldn't waste your money on FFXI... not that it's comeing out on GC or anything...

12-09-2002, 12:10 AM
Hi Naru. I personally have a Dreamcast and a PS2. I'd say if you only get one... then look into the games that are currently out for all of the platforms.

See which games you like the most and choose your platform that way. I mean, the system is only as good as the games.

My reason for getting a PS2 was the fact that I didn't have a Playstation and with one machine I was able to play a whole *ton* of games both Plastation and PS2 games. The first 2 games I got were Playstation 1 games. :) I didn't get a PS2 game until Final Fantasy X came out, that was like a year after I bought the PS2.

You may want to consider the fact that the XBox and PS2 can playback DVDs and the GameCube cannot. Though, I have to say that the PS2 is a pretty lame DVD player, but if you don't have one, it's works pretty good. :) I don't know how well a Xbox plays DVDs, but you do need to get a "DVD Activation Pack" to enable the feature. You can't play DVD's right out of the Xbox... err sorry for the pun. ;)

Also if you are looking forward, you may or may not want to consider each machine's online capabilities.

Both the PS2 and GameCube needs an addon adapter to get online. The XBox has a built in network connection, but you need to buy a "starter pack" which does include a game, I forget which one.

And if you're a geek like me. :) Sony offers a Linux Package, which actually let's you boot up linux and use the PS2 as a computer. Currently it's limited, but it's just so cool! :)

There is a project that's trying to put Linux on the Xbox and is actually possible if you have modded Xbox, but Microsoft frowns on this *very* much. For instance, if you connect your Xbox to "Xbox Live" their online service, it will detect if you have a mod on your Xbox or not. If you have one, it will ban your Xbox from the service for life. :/

Ok, I've rambled on enough. :) Basically, look at the games and go where the games are.

12-09-2002, 06:05 AM
Thanx! When you say you can connect online can you also play over the internet? For that matter are there any good games on the internet for computers? I once heard about this in detph fighting game where your character grows as you play. Do you have any clue as to what I am talking about lol?

12-09-2002, 06:21 AM
Yep playing over the internet with other live people, currently I think the GameCube has Phantasy Star Online, which I hear is a fantastic online game, though I haven't played it myself.

Both the Xbox and PS2 have a lot of sports and shooter games that you can play online, but I haven't used it myself. I'm still slowly playing through regular not-online games. :)

As for the fighting game... I'm afraid not. :(

12-09-2002, 06:41 AM
Naru: It seems like you would be the most interested in the PS2 from what you are talking about. It seems imperative that every gamer has the PS2 not because it has the best games (yes that is questioned to debate) but it has the most good games out there, and for a lot of gamers that is enough. Not to metion that some of the best games are exclusive to the PS2 as well.

But it you're looking into a second system....X-Box all the way. Don't listen to the people who tell that the software lineup is shit, because it's acutally better than the crap that the PS2 had for games for most of 2000-01. It's best said like this. Don't beleieve the hype.

12-09-2002, 07:37 AM

I remember a thread of similar nature...

Look at the games out for each system and then make your decision on what console to get, they are all quality consoles with the Xbox and GCube having hardware advantages due to being newer. Games ultimately make the console.

12-09-2002, 08:31 AM
I have all three systems so it really depends on WHY you want a console.

PS2: It has a lot of good games and it can play PSX games, but it's an older system so the graphics aren't as good as the others and it has a low grade DVD player....a lot of DVDs won't play in it.

Xbox: There are quite a few good games out and coming out for it. (Contrary to what people want to believe) It has amazing graphics and I use it as my main DVD player with no problems.

Gamecube: Some good games....a lot of kiddie titles (Yes, I count Mario and Luigi as kiddie titles). No DVD feature. Graphics are pretty good. (And Metroid Prime was an OK game....not amazing or great or anything....just OK.)

All three have some good fighting games (I'm counting Super Smash Brothers Melee as fighting)...so it just depends on your reason for getting a console.

12-09-2002, 10:21 AM
If youíre more of a social gamer Id go for the gamecube. I tend to use the gamecube more when my friends are over, it has some good party games like super smash brothers melee, super monkey ball, phantasy star online, ect..

I use the ps2 more when Iím just playing solo. There are TONS of great games on this console. It also has some good 2-player games.

X-box has some beautiful games on it also, doa3 and splinter cell just to name a few.

Id say save up your money for all 3 ^_~

12-09-2002, 06:21 PM
PS2 without a doubt. While the Box is fine and GC has been putting out sum good games as of late, Sony offers alot more than the other two consoles. As for the whole no more Nintendo consoles, that aint happening. Rember just coz Sony and Microsoft have mentioned new consoles,it doesnt mean Nintendo's gonna bow out soon. Just coz it's been getting reemed by Sony these last few years, I severly doubt the big N's gonna leave a genre they helped mold.

12-09-2002, 07:00 PM
ps2 has droped its price to $150

12-09-2002, 07:04 PM
also remember since X box is one big comp, it can be hacked into very easily threw X box live. Also remember Microsoft made it, meaning them making money is more important than you happiness. Hench they won't release an anit virus becuase they just want you to buy a new x box or a xbox2 (which will never happen) the've done it before (Windows ME and XP)

12-09-2002, 07:34 PM
Where did you hear the news that the PS2 dropped it's price to 150? I looked all around, and didn't find any news on this (something like this would've been reported...everywhere by now, even if it was a rumor)

As for Microsoft in it more for the money than you're happiness. Do you honestly think that Nintendo and escpecially Sony are in it for your happiness? Do you think any business that makes a profit is in for you hapiness only? No, making a profit is their first prioirty, you happiness results them in making more of a profit, so they play faux on all of us and pretend to care about said things.

As for X-Box being hackable, I'm not going to comment on that because I am ignorant, but I'm going to comment on buying extra systems. You do realize that about 30% of the people who bought a PS2 have already bought second one, right? You want to know why this is, because the DVD player isn't worth much as far as durability goes, meaning that the thing will mess up at anytime, meaning that you're screwed as far as getting a replacement. Meaning you'll be in the same position.

It's time people stop trying to make MS look more evil than Sony, because if you do the reasearch Sony is after the same thing as MS, and is coming very close to achieve it.

(Shouldn't this be in the Videogame Forum, for the case of consistency?)

12-09-2002, 08:07 PM
no because i like it here :P Thanks so much for your help. I think I will get the PS2 to start out since it has more variety. Then I may get something else in the future.

12-09-2002, 08:23 PM
I know you may like it here Naru, and I hope I don't sound rude, but it doesn't belong here. Admin didn't make all the forums for VG, Anime, just for them not to be posted there. Now I'm not a moderator, but just think it's a small matter of respect for the forums.

12-09-2002, 10:16 PM

12-11-2002, 11:05 PM

I think I'm alittle late, but I think if your going to get a system you should get the one with the most games you actually want to play. I mean what's the point of getting a system that only has like 5 games you want? You should just go to the store, and look at the games the seem interesting, and finally just pick the one that has the most games you want. I figure that way you get the most enjoyment out of it at first. Then if you decide you don't like it take to to gamestop, and trade for a different one. XD

12-12-2002, 04:13 PM
I own a PS2 and I love it! It may not have the greatest grapic capabilities but it all depends on who made the game.
EX: Final Fantasy X came out #1 on many lists as game with best grapics and it's for the PS2.
Plus the PS2 has some of the best platfoem games! My favorite game (along with Kingdom Hearts, which is also on the PS2) is Ratchet and Clank!
The PS2 has some really great games and is the best! I don't know what went wrong with the GC but it seems to be selling very low. Everyone hates the X-Box because it's Microsoft but I don't see what's so bad about it. I think it has the worst games on it though. It does have some games that look really cool and make me wish I had one but I don't. :(

12-12-2002, 07:07 PM
i have had this question many times at my work and im gonna say go with the system you think youll have the most fun out of. in my opinon i luved my dreamcast, it was the first system that came out with a modem and it rocked hard, but no more games are comin out for it except in japan and you dun wanna have to go thru the whole import thing. but i luv my gamecube and ps2. gamecube is a cheaper system all around in my opinon, well besides the dreamcast, but memory cards are cheaper the system is cheaper and its pretty awesome. you can get one at my work now like i did for like $129.00! but you can get ps2s kinda cheap too like for mm $179.00 >< go with the one that has the games you wanna play! and now like some ps2 games are down to 4.99 and brand new parappa is only 9.99! its all up to ya! okies sorry that was long and didnt make any sense! ^_-

12-13-2002, 05:07 PM
Right now...my xbox is the best. Mech Assault on live baybayyyy
But I take spells! However it always shifts between xbox and ps2. My gamecube hasn't hit the spotlight yet ^^

12-13-2002, 06:13 PM
My sister's GC controller doesn't work and when I played Animal Crossing it wouldn't work right and the C joy stick was stuck. There has actually been a thing that lets you use a PS2 controller on a GC because no one really likes the GC one O_o; Sad... poor Nintendo ^_^;

12-13-2002, 06:34 PM
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove my Wavebirds. Actually, I don't think love is even the right word. It's more than love. I think my Wavebirds are my favorites controllers.

12-13-2002, 09:25 PM
PS2 is best!!!! XD! But GameCube is really good too, so I like them both, but I hate XBox, it sucks, badly. I have a few friends who will only play Xbox and I ask them "why do you play Xbox? It doesn't have any good games or anything!" they say "yes it does!" I say "name off some good games then." They say...

Thats it, and to tell the truth, its not that good. And besides, you can get Halo on PC and its better then the XBox version, so why bother?

12-13-2002, 11:53 PM
Halo, Mech Assault, Halo 2, Project Ego (did they change the name on that one?), Ghost Recon... built in modem and harddrive. I mean, the xbox is one crafty bitch!
But it's definately a guys system (even though I'm not one ^^;). It's for those people who like to blow things up...not the ones who like storylines and cute things ^^ I say gamecube is for cutesy stuff and ps2 is for storylines.
I happen to like it all but my current craze is to blow mechs up....so I'm lovin' the box!

12-14-2002, 08:40 AM
You forgot Steel Battalion. The game sold out.....and if it sold out with a $200 price tag, that's telling you something.

12-14-2002, 11:25 AM
Oh yeah. I don't have it so I forgot about it ^^;; Wanna leand me $160? That's all I need!! You can come over and play it ANY time!

Best set of fighters? Yeah right. VF4 is the only real fighter on the PS2. Now if you want a set of fighters, then you're looking at the Dreamcast and the Saturn. I don't care if they're both dead systems, regardless they have the best fighters......ever. Arcade-perfect and the DC had a wide VARIETY of fighters.

Twisted Metal Black isn't even a racing game. It's car combat. Never have I seen a finish line in TMB.

Best RPG's? Hmmm.......FFX sucked. Although Kingdom Hearts makes up for that loss. Of course Suikoden.

Devil May Cry redefined the term "action games". I enjoyed that game much more than Metal Gear Solid 2. Definitely a must have for anyone buying a new PS2.

The control is definitely the best. But for fighters, you'll need a joystick definitely.

Your GC bit the bullet after a month of purchase? Well I'll be damned. I have yet to hear anybody complain about their GC dying out on them.

12-15-2002, 12:26 AM
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove my Wavebirds

Its nice to see that someone else here has a wavebird. It was well worth the cost of the controller.

12-15-2002, 12:29 AM
PS2 by far, I couldn't live w/o my FFX, kingdom hearts or LOTR let alone DDR max ^^;;

12-15-2002, 03:03 AM
Yikes...the best system??? *gulps*

i am in love with both my gamecube and PS2.....

i cannot bare to think of parting with either - this question is like me living without either anime or video games....and that's a hell no....^____-
