Are any of you canadians in Western Canada? I'm in Alberta, about 45 min south of Edmonton.

There isn't much con action in western Canada I guess, other than Animethon, Otafest, Anime Evolution... but whatever :D Who attends these ones?

I wonder if anyone will reply~

And I wonder, if anyone does look at this, has there been a festival thing in Saskatchewan before?? That's probably one of the most forgotten provinces in Canada I think hahaha.~~

Im in CA, but Im from Edmonton, Alta. We are going to go to Animethon^__^. Who attended that and what is it like?

We would also go to Otafest in Calgary, but its during my finals ><

When we used to live in edmonton, we used to attend alot of sci-fi conventions..we took pics too^^;, not much though because we werent doing the photography that much as we do now, but you can see the pics (of what we have) at consplayers.com , they were mostly based in Edmonton though.

I hope to have a great time at Animethon^^.

I'm from Manitoba. The only cons here are Ai-Kon and Chibicon, both located in Winnipeg. I've attended Ai-Kon twice and Chibicon 2K5 will be my first to it.

I'm Toronto-based but I went to the first Anime Evolution in Burnaby, BC (near Vancouver) a couple of years ago and had a great time! I heard back that they have since expanded the con and attendance has gone up (for which I'm glad since the organizers were awesome). There's also the possibility of driving down to Seattle for Sakura-Con. ;)

I'm not from Western Canada, but my friend Stan Hyde and his Monster Attack Team run the model show/panels/contests out at Anime Evolution so I've been meaning to try and make it out there sometime myself. ^_^

did you check my dads site? We went to the Star treck cons at the Coast Terras(spelling) Inn in Edmonton, on Calgary trail. We were into the star trek fandoms back then, and thats where we actually bought our first costumes to dress up..hehe but that doesnt fit me anymore. But there arent many anime cons in canada...theres 2 in alberta only..i think..but i really hope to have fun at animethon, maybe we can hang out, since i dont know anyone else.

Heyhey!! I'm from Leduc AB. In fact, the first masquerade I entered (along with Eleryth) was the first ever masquerade at Animethon. ^_^

I was in Edmonton over the holidays visiting my family, but I've been living in Ontario for several years. Regardless, it's great to see the western cons gathering speed. I would love to get back for another Animethon one of these years, but in the past it's always clashed with Toronto Trek. Bou! Who knows, though, perhaps this summer it'll work out differently. It'd be great to meet some of AB costumers!

Wow, I hardly post in these boards. Hey SkullRabbit I'll be seeing YOU from Animethon for sure XD

I've been to Animethon 8-11.. 8 didn't have much, but by 11 the number of cosplayers and attendees had skyrocketed. I'll be definitely attending this year

Wow, Animethon has certainly taken off -- that's fantastic!!!

I went for 3 years...Animethon 6-8. 8 (in 2001) would be the one where we entered our first cosplay event, barely knowing what the whole thing was about.

Because my family is still in Edmonton and the surrounding area, I'd really love to come out to see how much the convention has grown this year. Does anyone happen to know the date for the 2005 event, or am I safe in assuming it will once again be held the third weekend of July (15th-17th)? Because alas, that is the weekend of Toronto Trek...if only there was a way I could do both. Bugger!

Hmm...quite a few, actually! I think around 30-40 people, as singles and in groups? Perhaps I've gone nutty, I'm starting to think that was the second year they did a cosplay event.

I used to go to Animethon every year, before I moved here. But being once a year, and expensive sellers... :( It wasn't that much fun.

I'll be going back to Edmonton in August... but I won't be back in time for Animethon... because if I stay over in Japan a little more, I can go to Comiket.

Comiket vs. Animethon... er... yeah, I'm going to Comiket.

Sure! You're nimble, I'm certain you'll fold up nice and small. ^_~

I really am planning on this, as I want to visit Edmonton again before next Christmas anyways.

I doubt I'd compete in the masq., but I'd be happy to volunteer in some capacity. RedXII/SkullRabbit, do you know who I might get in touch with about that? Y'know, seeing as you're my animethon informers. :)

☆Skull Rabbit☆

well, I think you can join the AA forums ( http://www.anime-alberta.org ) and PM Mo-chan I think...he might be able to give you more information :P

Eleryth
01-10-2005, 09:43 PM
Hahhaha. Mo-chan power! (Oselle, that's Mark, btw). I'm over at the forums as well (the AA ones). I think Sakuragirl ran the masq last year, but I'm not positive. They're not using ICG guidelines, and I'm not sure what they use. They had a pay-to-enter system, since the winners (which I think were basically judges awards and a few construction ones) received actual prizes (DVDs and things, not just paper). I think most of the past executive did the judging, because Jason was saying he's judged before. There should be a link to the Animethon homepage from anime-alberta, probably under Events.

I'm also from Leduc. My first convention was Animethon 4 (yay for the WHITE t-shirts!!), and I attended for a while. Uni and other things took me away, but I've still a soft spot for it. It's still one of my faves, mostly due to the programming and better rooms for the showings. Be sure to check out the 404s Improv (mark's group). And harrass him if he's not wearing his Mo-beanie. :P Oh, and I think this is the first year A-thon's in a hotel, not GMCC.

My biggest surprise was PikminLink being from Edmonton! Whaa! I've been admiring your work for ages. I wish I was into the Sci-fi convention curcuit sooner, but I was probably too young to drive out there, anyway. Finding out about these things before there was the internet was a lot harder!

RedXIII

I volunteered last year as security, it was fun. I read Animethon is still held at GMCC with the dance and other events at the hotel.

Eleryth
01-11-2005, 06:19 PM
Yeah, I'm not too up on the details since I'm not actually going. I just remember some talk of getting a hotel, so I guess I just assumed it'd be there, like other conventions that have hotels (or convention centers right next door, I guess).

I couldn't find the animethon page, for some strange reason. I looked! And I found it once randomly... found it now.

http://www.animethon.org.

Go Oselle, go! It's gotten so much bigger from when we first started going, I think. Hahah, I remember becoming a door person, somehow, while Grant was watching Jin-roh. And I had to keep these little kids out b/c of fire hazards and people limits and stuff. And the funniest part was telling some guy that I missed getting white A-thon t-shirts, and he said "They've always been black", and I said "Nope...." The look on his face was funny. Hehehehe. Kev hung out with me a bit then....ah, I miss playing Mario Party with the old gang....

It's a shame when Canada's longest running anime convention (at least, I think it is; one of the longest, anyway) gets overlooked.... (remember that lady in line at Toronto Trek, I think it was? "Edmonton has an Anime Convention? Must be new, cuz I've lived there for many years and never heard of it." ) >.<

Oh man...the old gang. HA! I still remember our "introduction to anime" with them. Hee! Wonder if I'll see any of them there this year, assuming I make it out?

And yes, that is DEFINITELY a shame (I miss the white shirts too!). And it's not even like Animethon is an isolated thing that noone hears about - the concom (sorry, I don't know what else to call them! the AA exec?) has always done a great job of promoting it online, in newspapers, etc. I remember the first year we went, we saw it in the Journal and decided to go just for the hell of it. I DO remember that lady in line at Trek, and I remember thinking that she must have been living under a rock. Of course, I guess one has kind of an information filter. So if you're not keeping your eyes open for anything but scifi/fantasy events, maybe you wouldn't notice an ad about an anime con.

^^;; thankyou. Yeah I was much younger when we did all the scifi convention things. when i used to live out there i actully never heard of anime, so i didnt even know about these anime cons. but yeah my dad from consplayers.com and I with my mom too will be there, its really sounding like alot of fun, so if its good we will end up going next year.

Sooo many people that I know from AA. . .Ha ha.

I'm hoping to make it to Otafest this year, but since I have so little money on my hands, I'll probably not be cosplaying. . .again. >< ARGH.

As for Animethon. . .I must beg my mother to go there, because I live in. . .dun dun DUN. . .Sundre! The isolated 2100 small town half an hour from Olds that NO ONE has head of. . .XD But Edmonton is two hours away, versus Calgary, which is only an hour and a half. So I most likely won't be going to both, even though I really want to.

A fine assbitch I be :bigtu: Alright. So next time I will remember to send to your other :D I shall be smart now. Maybe we can communicate with cryptic messages :O Haha jk~ I wonder though if we scared off conversation in this thread :D

Everyone else who reads? SAY SOMETHING. About a convention. Or a cosplay for one.

Hey guys! The cryptic post action I don't mind so much, but could you please tone down the profanity? This is a family-friendly set of forums, and that kind of stuff can certainly put people off.

I'm still planning to fly out to Edmonton in August, hopefully attend Animethon in its first year as a 3-day con. I almost certainly won't be entering the masq. there, but I'm going to see about volunteering for the event in some capacity. No idea what costumes I'll bring, possibly Cheshire lolita if I ever get it...erm...started. Dot is a good candidate as well, she won't take up much room in a suitcase/backpack. ;) Perhaps a Matsulika? Gah! Ah well, at least I have options.

I'm not all that sure which to choose. . .Otafest or Animethon. . .It's very convenient that they are more than three months apart from each other, but the problemI have is with distance and the gas that my mom slaves to buy.

So which one is more worth the visit? Otafest, or Animethon? Because if my mom will only let me go to one con again this year, I wanna go to the best one.

I Love Animethon its so kinda family like, not too too big and just a really fun time. Good shopping too! I think I've been too the last 5 but I can't remeber.

I'll defintley go to Animethon if I'm still here in August. I'm moving back to Vancouver Island(eith Courtenay or Victori) for college. I didn't got to the last Keikon but my two older brothers have helped run it for 3 years and my sister this year.

I might go to Anime Evolution, depending on if my new job will let me have a day or two off at that time. I'd love to go to Animethon as well, but staying the weekend would be too expensive with hotel costs. ;_;

PikminLink: I searched through a few sites and found some cosplay pictures from last year's animethon, but I'm not sure if you've seen them already. The site also has an album of opening ceremonies and other stuff on the main page. ^^

Well, there have been some problems with flaming and such in the forums lately, so I think it's always wise to remember that tone and things like sarcasm can't be conveyed via text alone. So if "people do that to you all the time", maybe just be a little more careful in how you're coming across.

And once again, this has spiralled off topic. My bad.

Yay for Canadian Cosplayers! It's so not fair how few cons we get out here on the west coast.

I'll be going to AE this year - my first time cosplaying too. I went last year, but it was kinda last minute so I only got to go for the sunday (and I had drag around my trekkie father). Hopefully it will be more enjoyable this year, since there will be a lack of parents and I'll be with friends.

I probably won't be. I should kind of have to go early to practice stuff. But it would be cheaper than plane, especially now that apparently plane fares are going up because of jets go going poof and the "competition" is not there anymore so airplane people don't have to charge less, or so my mom tells me.

Zuh?! There's other cons in BC other then Anime Evolution? When does Kei-kon take place? Do they have a website?

I'm limited to attending Anime Evolution, though I've never heard of kei-kon before. I have driven down to Sakura con the last three years, though. I'm going to Anime Evolution this year as well. Me and my friend will probably be cosplay as Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny, and/or CHAM from Perfect Blue n_n

04-13-2005, 02:11 AM
I tried to find a website for you, Scorpion, but I got some weird thing that only babbled about Gendou Ikari (though it was entertaining, there wasn't any convention information). But I did find this page...
http://www.anime-cons.com/events/info.shtml/598 (click the kei-kon link to get the the gendou page... I assume it's a placeholder or something?)

It was on March 11-13th this year, so you'll have to wait until 2006 to attend the next one.

Scorpion_Lady
04-13-2005, 02:35 PM
Yeah, I found that site as well, and was somewhat confused. I'll see what my funds are like closer to the date; it looks like it's gonna be around the same time as Sakura con next year, so I don't know if I'll have enough money to attend both...but we'll see ^__^

☆Skull Rabbit☆
04-13-2005, 04:44 PM
I think if I lived in bc somewhere close to where that kei kon is I would probably go, but it seems kind of deadish and how to say... boring? (from what I have heard) so I wouldnt pay to travel there from here :D I wonder though is someday I will go.

~Yukiko~
04-13-2005, 10:03 PM
Kei Kon will probably get bigger... It's pretty close to me, but I'd have to find a place to stay in Victoria. (I have a friend there so if she wants me to go I just might.) But yeah... I haven't been there yet and I don't plan to go unless someone goes with me. :O

Scorpion_Lady
04-15-2005, 02:00 PM
I wouldn't mind going to kei kon, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to dish out that much money for a hotel and food and costumes if it's just going to be a little con. And I live too far away to go in the morning, and then head home in the evening; I'd have to stay for at least one night. =/

☆Skull Rabbit☆
04-17-2005, 05:37 AM
Yuki, if I ever live in the Vancouver area, I'd go with you. *salute* Haha like that will happen anytime soon, if ever you'd already probably be sick of conventions and what not :D

Anyways, there is about a month until Otafest :D (Calgary event) Anyone who might be going should try to make it 100% able to ;) My group Para Para 2.0 (haha what a dumbass name...) will be doing a mini-event type thing on the Saturday at 1:30 I believe is the time. So if you can go, come watch us...I don't want the room to be empty.....haha. Maybe 5 people will come~~ haha

Also, if you watch the cosplay... watch my lame ass one. I'll be dressed as Hikari from Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai~~ with an Akari, and giant Kuon *its what, 20 cm tall?? our Kuon will be..oh..about 6 feet tall :D . (cheer us on ;)

Even if anyone from MANITOBA is going, it will be....... so great if I can hitch a ride!! I'll totally split the gas and everything. I can budget $100 to get there; just........ all the planes, trains, and buses cost WAY more than that! *sad*

Otafest was great. I had a wonderful time and met some great people and I will totally be going again next year. And bringing more money.

I can't wait for Animethon. Animethon is the largest con in Western canada. There should be about 4500-6000 people there this year so its growing, and with its groth comes more amazing costumes and cosplayers, and I love too see that.

Beej has handed over the Bustrips too me for Animethon and Anime Evolution.
Edmonton too Vancover for Anime Evolution
Vancover too Edmonton for Animethon

I'll post up info on here as we get closer too the dates, We are still getting some numbers and contacting people, but I'll try too keep everyone upto date as we get more info.

Heliosis - I wasn't into cosplay at all until I found this site, and that was long before I went to Otafest 2004 (this is my second account here).

You could still make costumes to show off on the site, though. :3 Hopefully you'll be able to possibly come out to an Alberta con someday.

Mevee - I've only been to Otafest twice. :3 It's not how many conventions you go to or how many costumes you make, although as you get farther into the cosplay hobby you might find yourself wishing to, it's how much fun you have. 8D
