Hi there, I'm trying to make a huge Anchor for my May costume {Guilty Gear} and I have a few ideas, but I'm generally new at prop making... and I'm trying to find a way to make like a 4ft. anchor, which is light enough to cary with me practically everywhere, fairly durable... and look decient ^^;; ;; .. .. .does anyone have any ideas?

here's a refrence. .. well, quite a few refrences
http://ggxlol.highervoltage.net/may/index.html

so far I have the handle and loop on thr handle shaped out in foam.. . .but it's reallllly hard to do.. and I was thinking of experimenting with fiberglass and bondo? but I'm not sure how to do so... o_o;; . .. any ideas or sugestions? ^.^;;

Thankies!

I know I knowwwwwww :3!

Mine is really light compared to it's size ^__^

http://www.dementors-kiss.net/cosplay/may/may1.jpg

And what I basically did was just constructed a 'skeleton' of it out of cardboard and dense foam and then covered the whole damn thing with Celluclay (I think? I got it at Michaels) and it dries really hard and I was even able to sand it down ^__^ Plus, its a hell of a lot safer than bondo and fiberglass.

It took about a month to make (it takes the celluclay a really long time to dry) so make sure to give yourself plenty of time ^___^

does that stuff make it hard and durrible? ^^ ... . and would you need foam on the inside? I had trouble shaping foam, and my dad mentioned the possibility of making only a frame from posterboard, and covering that with bondo and fiberglass, does that stuff work the same way, or if I still did it that other way, witout the foam on the inside, would it still be fairly durrible? x_x;;

{Afraid of getting props damaged, especially after seeing my Inuyasha friend's sword split in two x_x;; }

but again is the weight issue ^^;;

Oh, and I also want to say that I think you make an adorible May! ^^ and your anchor rocks! X3 . .. {How did you transport that thing? ^^;; }

thank you very much :3 We actually have to take our truck to cons because we have so much huge stuff.. ^__^;;;;;; so we just tossed it in the back with the rest of the stuff :3

Celluclay is like instant papier mache.. you just add water to it... then when it dries all the way you can sand it. :3 I imagine that the posterboard would be be okay.. cause mine was mostly cardboard and it held up really well.

I was able to carry mine around on my shoulder.. so it ended up being really light.. (like... maybe 7 pounds? my cat weighed more than it did. :\)

hehe, if it's lighter then my nephew, I'm good ^^ ~ so you think it'd be sturdy enough even without a foam core inside? or should I make sure no one abuses it? x_x;;?

and if you dun mind me asking, how did you get the arm and neck things to stay on? I had a few ides, but I'm afraid of them falling off and losein' em ^^;;

Well, I got a whooole bunch-o-suplies, even a little pack of that celluclay stuff ^^ .. . I figured I'd play with it on my armor pieces first to see how it works~? ^^ {I've never paper mached before either ^^;; }

And I never really thought about velcro, heh, I was thinking about screws and elastic ^^;; {I always have to make things complicated... x_x;; }

Soo, do you have to mix up allll of the celluclay stuff when you use it, or just bits of it at a time? ^^;;? and is it really messy? .. .. .

And Last question in general, is there any decient pictures to show how exactly the anchor is shaped? I mean, of course the bottom comes to a point, but what about the top of the bottom part, is that suposed to be flat, or come to another point? I've had trouble trying to figure it out, due to the shadows and such on the pictures I find ^^;; ... hrm..

heh, after I picked this costume, and started it, I began to realize that it's alittle more complicated then I origionally anticipated ^^;; {especially with the anchor~ that, and I'm having trouble finding 6 matching buckles~ :thumbsup: } but I think it'll be fun! I plan to debute it at Colossalcon, but it's mainly for Otakon ^^ There's suposed to be a big guilty gear group, and I'll even have my very own Johnny~ :heart: ^^

So, do you have any progress done yet? ^^;;

You should mix up a little at a time.. (a little goes a LOOOOOONG way ^^; ) Then you can mix more as you need it. ^__^ (also, if you have left overs, just stick them in a sandwich bag and put it in the freezer.. it wont harden like that ^^; )

And.. I had the art book to go off of when I was making it.. ^^;;; theres was pages of her moves and poses.. so I could see it from all angles.. Sorry I can't scan it in (it's starting to fall apart.. and I don't want to hurt it anymore. ._.; )

AyameChan - LOL I don't mind it if you use the info. Glad I could help ^^

Awww, your poor book ^^;; is there any way to preserve it? ^^;;; I'm concidering investing in an art book of my own ^^ I've found one for like 20 bucks online~

And good luck Ayame, ~~wish me luck too ^^;; this doesn't haaaave to be done for a while, but I've just been soooooo moativated ^^!! I got the neck armor thing all shaped out, now I need to harden it somehow~ {celluclay?} ^^ .. . and I got alittle more of my anchor done, the entire handle, now I need to do the blades of it, and the veeery bottom ^^ Bwee, I'm getting soo excited! {and I dun even know what con exactly that I'll be wearing this too} ^^;; ; ; ...

But about my armor pieces, I get the feeling that they'll be alittle too heavy for velcro... >_>;; hrm.. once I finish the initial pieices, I'll be able to tell the weight... but I'm getting close ^^

On a side note.. . does anyone have any clue on how to make that weird skull-head 'J' thing for Johnny's hat~ or even just have a better picture of it ^^;;? Or what to use for the gold things on his coat? {I'm helping get a Johnny costume together for my buuuddy ^^ ~<3 }

My anchor's not agreeing with me... x_x;; I was trying to work with that spray foam stuff and cardboard molds... but the top exploded {well, sorta the bottom part~?}, then I got it on, and now it's crooked... >_>;; should I try to continue to fix it up, or is there another form of foam that you'd sugest useing.. . perferably pretty well affordable... ^^;; I'm poor.. *sniffles* so I'm kinda stuck again ^^;;;

so far I'm just sticking with the spray foam, it's not a good choice, but I'm already haf done esing that stuff ^^;; ;; ~oy~~

And about my hat, I was actually planning on re-making it XD I pretty much used an old costume pirate hat as a frame, and some interfacing, and this one's actually just painted orange ^^;; I was gonna use actual fabric, and attempt the more plushie looking hat that she has in GGx-xx-isuka~ {I started the costume after playing the first GG, and the character design is veeery slightly different, but still noticeable ^^}

and for my icons, I drew some of them, and this one that I've got now, I found this one ^^ hehe ^^ feel free to PM me, maybe we can disscuss construction or refrences or something ^^

Sorry I wasn't much help, but hopefully someone can help me ^^

. .. Does this look alright for the shape of the blades, or should they be more narrow, or taken in more, or let out more? ^^;; .. what do you think?
