I was just curious if anyone out there has done or was considering Venture Bros costumes. I'm scheming to do Dr. Girlfriend and have friends who want to be Dr. Orpheus and Brock Samson, although who knows when we'll actually do this since we were considering it for Halloween and I won't even be in the country then if the JET Program takes me. But anyway, has anyone else been tempted to do costumes from this series?

I've wanted to do The Monarch! I'm thinking of trying to get it together for Halloween as well. I've already got a black bodysuit that I can use!

I want to do a Dean cosplay, but I have to finish up at least a couple more of my own costumes first and at least start work on one of my planned costumes.
The Venture Brothers is one of my favorite american made cartoons (other than my much adored The Simpsons!^_^)right now.

A friend and I were tossing around ideas--I'd be Dr. Girlfriend, she'd be Molotov Cocktease--but she doesn't really cosplay, so it's not likely to happen. It would rock, though. :D

LOL... I've wanted to do Dr. Girlfriend too...she's so cool. I love the way she always rolls her eyes at The Monarch when he's not looking. Anway... it would be cool to see someone cosplay from them!

KonekoMiyabi: Hey, I could use a Monarch! ^_^

Claireon: It's funny, I almost did Molotov Cocktease for Halloween when my then-boyfriend wanted to be Brock Samson, but the plans fell through and I just wore I-no again. It would've just been mostly stuff I had lying around, though, nothing too complicated.

I LOVE this show. Hands down, the best original AS show.

I don't think I'd go as far as to cosplay from it, though, except maybe Molotov... It's the heart-shaped eyepatch that does it for me. XD I really wanna see mroe of her and Brock in the series.

Haha, a friend and I have been tossing around the idea of duct taping ourselves together to either form MECHASHIVA or Tiny Attorney. Though, if I had the body for it, I would do Molotov Cocktease in a heartbeat and force him to be Brock. Good times, man, good times.

If I ever saw a Monarch or Dr. Orpheus, I would pee my fangirlie pants with glee.

I know a guy who is doing Dr. Girlfriend (or I guess I should say Dr. Ex-Girlfriend) cosplay at Megacon. He's hilarious. It's such a great show that I wish there was some cosplay I could do from it, but sadly I don't think I fit any characters. Except I haven't heard of the mechashiva one. I missed a bunch of episodes, too. It seems whenever I manage to watch it they're showing one of two episodes constantly. I can never remember when the new ones are. I'm kind of baffled by the large number of people who want to be Dr. Orpheus. That's cool. XD I need to get the show on dvd or something. Catch up on it.

Alas, I lack her boobage, but I'm part Russian, so, um... yeah! XD I just love that show too much. I also have a friend that does a rocking Monarch impression. I'm making a costume for him if he says he's "too lazy" to make one for himself. Yes, it must be done.

I have actually toyed around with the idea of making a Molotov costume, but it would be too much work for me. I might make it eventually (but not anytime soon).

I might make Dr. Girlfriend's pajamas though. Not for showing off, just for fun. :schitzo:

There was one at Katsucon too, that I saw a picture of. I think it was Healer Kou, but I'm not sure.

heh heh...dangnebbit, i love that show. when do new episodes start? i'm all kinds of impatient..

anyways, heh heh...i recently finished my dr. (ex) girlfriend costume. well, 99%finished. i have about two fingers left to stitch on the white pvc gloves i made. i will try to take pictures soon.
i demolished an old prom dress from ye olde thrift store and turned an $8.99 pair of hot topic white pvc boots into wide calf boots, and made a pillbox hat out of cardstock paper, scrapbooking adhesive squares, and the fabric.
suprisingly, it dosen't look ghetto. i swear!
i was going to wear it to dragoncon, but it's not so likely now because my friend failed to order his muscle shirt and blonde mullet wig for brock.

There's more in my AnimeNext photo gallery. I also have a gallery of my Dr. Girlfriend progression.

And on a final note, me and my boyfriend met the person who has the Dean Venture tattoo on her leg. They had a picture of it on a bump on Adult Swim awhile ago. It was pretty cool.

This is very true. That is why my friend is trying to get his stuff together for Dragon Con 2K6. I think the 'Action Man' helmet is going to be hard, but maybe you all can point me in the right direction to lend my friend a hand?

I don't care whether or not I have the body type, I'm so doing Molotov Cocktease. Eventually. Really. The costumes I've seen on here are great, but I'm desperate to see some in action. Apparently I'm not going to the right cons for this sort of thing. A Hank & Dean cosplay would be nice... especially the underdeveloped-clone versions...

Yesterday was my birthday, in addition to the Season 2 premiere, and I had been making a big fuss over it in the Myspace group (it was the gift I wanted most), and today I found a note from Doc Hammer in my mailbox saying they had intended it that way all along. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?

You are awesome. Heh heh heh. But yeah, Molotov is probably the female Venture Brother character most deserving of a cosplay. She's the only repeat female aside from Dr. Girlfriend. Plus she can hold he own against Brock, which makes her uber bad-ass. Really though, almost all of the characters are cos-worthy.

It's just 'cause I'm so darn loveable, I guess.

Molotov is the only repeat female aside from Dr. Girlfriend... if we have, in fact, verified that Dr. Girlfriend is indeed a girl. I really think nothing beat the bit in season 1 where she and Brock had that battle in the motel room. That, and the fact that she was working to recover David Bowie's companda. Oh, and she's got a chastity belt. Any character who wears a chastity belt is worth doing.

Good luck with keeping the bodysuit properly positioned, lol

SaccharineDream
07-04-2006, 02:35 PM
Yeah I know, the Henchmen's wings will be a pain also, and they don't even have a design on them. I saw a video interview of a henchman cosplayer, and he used black elastic to keep them on, so the straps blended in with the outfit and you couldn't see them. I definately will do that. Oh, and i found some black fabric the other day which will be perfect ^^

If there is anyone in the Pittsburgh area who would like to meet up with our ever growing group, you are more than welcome. I went as Dr. Venture for Halloween last year (his blue outfit from 'Dia De Los Dangerous!'.) Unfortunately, no pics are up because...well...the bald cap for it sucked...hard (...in the true Venture fashion, it was the only one I could find, it was $2.99 and looked like a rubber glove on my head.)

I'm scouting around to try and find a good quality cap so I can redo the outfit at AnimeBoston this year, so hopefully I'll be able to provide evidence then (cause the rest of the outfit turned out pretty well otherwise.)

Also got a friend who's planning to do a Venture Bros character at some point...still deciding which though (right now he's got it down to either Dr. Orpheus or Horace Gentleman.)

The guy who was our Dr. Orpheus even made HELPER! I was Dr. Girlfriend and my hubby was Monarch, then we had pretty much all the main characters except for Dr. Venture himself. XD One of our friends said he'd do it if we ever brought the group together again, but we never did. ;___;

They featured a pic of our group on the Adult Swim website at one point, but I have no idea how to find it again. They used to have like a "fan section" but I guess it's gone now.

My husband and I have always joked about it, he thinks I would be a good Triana, and he wants to be Brock. He has completely the wrong body frame for Dean, unfortunately.

...ironically, Dr. Girlfriend is one of the few non-crossplay outfits I have on my "to do" list. I don't even have anyone else I know going as anyone from the series, I just have this weird compulsion to do it. ...besides, I can do his/her voice fairly well. *snickers* I might have it by the time the next Anime Boston rolls around...

Dean's on my "Do it!" list if I can find a sweater vest in that color. And can do the hair properly, mine's a few inches too long and I don't know about doing a wig that short.

I started working on The Monarch's costume. It's coming together nicely. The wings are orange vinyl and naugahyde and the torso-plate is a halloween gladiator's breastplate wrapped with vinyl and finally yellow fetish latex. It's nearly done. I'm trying to find a black undersuit but I don't want anything too 'form fitting'. Any suggestions are appreciated!

For Halloween last year me and my two freinds had gotten together a group of seriously like 8 people to do a Venture Bro's cosplay. We had both the brothers, a Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Brock, Molotov cocktease, and a few others....

I was gonna be Pete, was super stoked, but yeah, two friends got in a car accident on Halloween and one of them cracked their collar bone so those plans didn't go through XD

Those pix are awesome! I'm thinking about making a Monarch costume too. How did you do the shoulder pads?
I found a bunch of black catsuits on eBay for fairly reasonable prices. Most are from China but they will tailor them to your specs so you might try that.

Oh god yes I want to do a Dr Killinger costume. Even if nobody at my local cons would recognize the character, I just can't get him out of my head. I just have to find the right Magic Murder Bag first. Once that falls into place I will put the rest of it together... in the meantime I plan to make the dead bunny slippers, just for kicks.

Dr. killinger gets reognized I've done him at a few cons. with holloween coming up now is the time to by a skull mask and cut of the lower jaw thats how I made mine. the bag I use some small black bages that are close but if you want the right one look on line for old doctor bags or once again holloween may be a good time to look for doctor costumes that come with a bag.

We haz a big Venture Bros. group in the making for April, but so far all we have is villains...So in a sense, we haz The Venture Villains! I'm planning on doing Girl-Hitler in her Underminion Disguise <3 My body type doesn't really relate to anyone else, so I figured why the hell not -- I would've done Dr. Girlfriend in her Jackie O costume, but she's so easy to mess up D:

So far we have Herr Trigger, Sgt. Hatred, Girl-Hitler, and the Grand Inquisitor -- any ideas to make the Inquisitor's head spin?

So far we have Herr Trigger, Sgt. Hatred, Girl-Hitler, and the Grand Inquisitor -- any ideas to make the Inquisitor's head spin?

I'm finally getting started on a Grand Galactic Inquisitor costume of my own.
The eye spin was a detail I really want to include. My thoughts are that it would require a somewhat intracate mechanism wherby the section which turns is supported by a spokes eminating from a central hub which rotates around a axial support holding up the top of the helmet. With some gearing and a small electric motor you could get the eye's to spin on command. Using colored lenses and a light bulb inside the helmet would make for a neat effect too.
But like I said, this idea is still in the idea stage. If it seems like it's too much work I'll just set it aside for a future improvement.
I just got a pair of stilts today and a 7 inch diameter pipe thing. I tried a 6 inch pvc pipe but that failed. I'm hoping this 7 inch thing will work since I think an 8 inch diameter wouldn't fit the costume's ratios as nicely. We'll find out tomarrow.

If it's the one with the floppy wings, those can be made from nylon mesh or tricot?

Hey, I'm planning on doing a Dr. Mrs. The Monarch costume and I was wondering if anyone here had found a place carrying yellow 4-way stretch vinyl? I know there's a lot of 2-way out there, but it would just be so much easier with 4-way and the only kind I can find is more of a green yellow from Spandex House. Anyone else who did Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, what did you guys use?

I totally pulled some thread neglect. I'm not into cosplay, per se, as a hobby. I just really get into Halloween and replicas. Anyway, figured I'd share some Monarch pics in case anyone needed ideas.

http://trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/wings2.jpg

http://trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/crown.jpg

http://trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/front-1.jpg

The Crown - Took a 2 liter soda bottle and cut out a crown shape, with the points and all. Then, took 2 pieces of that yellow vinyl, traced the outline of the cut bottle on them, cut them out, and stitched them together to make a pocket to slide the cut plastic bottle into, stitched the bottom to seal it up and tied some yellow thread around the top of the points to make little balls for effect.

The Breastplate - I grabbed a relatively durable, plastic Roman gladiator's chest plate from a costume shop. There were much better ones online for the purpose of the costume, but due to time restraints, I had to get one locally. It was sturdy enough that it wouldn't rip or crack, it had a front and a back. It looked something like this (http://www.pjstrickshop.com/images/1735.jpg). Here is the one I used (http://www.trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/monarch/chest1.jpg).

I took an Exacto knife and cut off some of the most protruding details, mainly the nipples, and the Medusa face in the middle, so they wouldnt show through the eventual covering of thin, very contour friendly, yellow vinyl. I didn't want to cut too much off and compromise the strength of the plastic, so just the real 'sticking out' parts.

Then, I covered it in a pretty thick, white naugahyde. This helped smooth the features a lot and make it almost uniform. The thick white material basically bridged the gaps between the chest plate's natural shapes and contours. It also acted as a 'primer' so the thin yellow vinyl would have even coloring behind it and nothing unwanted showing through. I basically wrapped the naugahyde around and used a lot of duct tape to tape it 3-4 inches into the inside of the chest piece.

Then, took the thin yellow vinyl, pulled tightly around the whole breastplate, from the center out, taping it again on the inside. I repeated this entire process for the backing piece.

The Emblem - I took some white contact paper and spray painted it red. Then printed out the monarch logo, all blown up and big on some regular paper. Laid the print out over the dry, now red contact paper and cut it out with a sharp Exacto knife. Then stuck it to the chest piece.

The Shoulder Pads - Are actually knee pads (http://trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/kneepads.jpg) I got from the hardware store (Lowe's). recovered them with the yellow vinyl and then used heavy, large metal snaps to hold them on to the chest piece. Here are the one's we used (http://www.trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/monarch/shoulder1.jpg).

The Wings - Were the hardest part. I wanted to do them real heavy duty, so they had some weight to them and didn't appear flimsy and fake. So we made them out of orange seat vinyl and black naugahyde/leather. With all the finished sewn edges, they got really, really thick in some places (basically like 8-10 layers of thick vinyl) and kept breaking the needle in the machine, even at slow speeds and the heaviest leather needle we could get. We, and by we I mean she (God bless her), hand cranked the machine for the entire job and you can see the detail of the sewing and thickness here:

http://trialityguild.com/t-img/news/q/qxx/close-up.jpg

We first drew the wings out in full scale on cardboard and used that as a stencil to cut out the real pieces. We attached the wings with heavy duty snaps to the backside of the torso armor. Snaps were, 1 in the middle, 1 under each shoulder pad.

The Boots - Were old sneakers with cardboard, like a gift box you'd put a shirt into, shaped and cut to stand up like the kingly boots the monarch wears. With enough cardboard and duct tape making the layout, we covered it with the yellow vinyl in straps or rows. It gave it a really nice, details contour look, rather than entirely smooth and cartoonish; a little more realistic.

The Wrist Gauntlets - Were really simple; yellow vinyl, stuffed with cotton batting. We used holes, with eyelets, and a shoe lace to hold them on; basically like a sneaker. We had lines sewn in to give it that looks the Monarch's gauntlets have, but it didn't show well from a distance as we used yellow stitching (I'd use black next time).

All in all, it was a big hit, we had a lot of fun making it from scratch. At the time, I couldn't find but maybe 2 pictures of Monarch costumes online, so I think that helped us really try and figure out the best way to make it all work. Was definitely my favorite costume build to date.

I have tons of pictures of the process, almost every big step, posted below if anyone is curious. I'm always checking these and other Cosplay forums and sites as resources for ideas and inspiration, I don't want to leech without giving back so hopefully this helps some Cosplayers in their ventures towards Monarchy!
