Hello everyone,

First off this is my first post so hello to everyone and I hope your having a pleasent day.

So onto the topic,

I'm wondering where i should start to make a power ranger style outfit? I was hoping on inviting my own design but people would still see where i was going with it, if anybody could give me ANY help I would really really appreciate it, oh and if by any chance who ever respondes happens to be a god could you give me a random price range with what I should do?

Thank you guys, and keep up the good work

That's really cool, I've actually considered Power Ranger cosplay myself. Obviously, the only thing I'm iffy on how to make is the helmet. :P

If you use spandex, expect to pay anywhere from $10 - $30 per yard (depending on where you get it and the quality). How much you'll need depends on whatever size you wear. For something like this I'd expect to pay around $100-$200 for materials and such.

Hooray for Sentai love. I'd ratehr try Jetman over the various power rangers series (it's easier to list them as Powere rangers tahn their respective original sentai names XD)

Ans yeas, you'll need spandex pobably, unless you plan on doing something that isn't the battle costume thing, but still recognizable. For example, my bro and I are trying to do an SPD cosplay, but we're using the black uniforms they wear in the SPD headquarters.

If you really want to do a spandex battle suit thing, I warn you, spandex isn't exactly easy to pull off, and though i've never sewn anythign with it, I'm guessing it's not so fun to work with.

Anywho, I wish you luck. It would be so awesome to see Sentai cosplayers.

If you're small enough you could just buy some little kid pajamas and be done with it

The secret to a good Power Rangers cosplay is to actually cosplay Municipal Force Daitenzen.

I've got a friend that cosplayed as Cmdr. Kruger from Dekaranger. I myself have wanted to cosplay as a Power Ranger, and will as soon as I am able. I'm not sure how to go about it, really...

Ooo, power rangers! I like them from the first series, with Tommy, Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, and Billy! I know Tommy wasn't really from the first series, he was the white ranger but...you know...and I love Adam, hehe! Adam rocks! *big Johnny Yong Bosch fan* ^.^ I never really got into the later series, not past Power Rangers Turbo. You could be a civilian power ranger and just dress in all one color clothing, haha. *walks around in all pink clothes* Look, I'm Kimberly! ^.^ Or Kat...which ever. :-p But Kimberly's cooler, whoo! *runs off singing "go go, Power Rangers*

::crings::

Sentai and Power Rangers may typically use the same costume (as Power Rangers is based off Sentai) but the two series are entirely different, so people try not to confuse the two. ;)

As for costumes in Sentai there are typically two types of costumes. The normal, everyday wear and of course what they wear when they transform. In Power Rangers the normal, everyday wear may be normal clothes and not a specific costume.

Making their trademark uniforms isn't that difficult as it's a bodysuit made of spandex. What would be hard and would be highly recommended to simply import, are the weapons and helmet. Yes, they make the weapons and helmets in Japan but finding a toy import store that has the item in stock can be at times a challenge.

I'll be making Magiranger costumes (normal wear) for my children because it is far simpler then attempting to make five uniforms, buy helmets and weapons for them.

You might be able to order the headgear from a site for a decnt price ^^

I'm working on a Rita Repulsa (Bandora) costume myself.

Most helmets are fan made. You have to sculpt and cast your own usually. If you were to buy one, you would look at about $400-$1000 per helmet, and that means it might not even be painted or include the visor and clips to wear.

Actually, if you purchase someone elses work and make a replica, you are committing theft of that property. never cast anyone elses work unless you have permission to do so. If you do cast from someone elses, you have to make an enormous effort to change the look of it, to make it your own design. Not worth it.

Real helmets used by the series would be over $2000 to purchase (beause they were made by Toei).

Most replica helmets can be bought on Yahoo! Japan Auctions, so use a service like Celga or Rinkya to do so. Forewarning, some are not well made, or not accurate and many are either too big or too small and will cost you nearly $800 to get (not including shipping).

So, cheaply? Sculpt and make your own, to your head size.

I wanted to dig this thread back up because I saw these photos over at thedentedhelmet.com (which is a Boba, Jango and Mandolorian makers website) and I was like 'Dang Yo'. Wanted to know if anyone had any info on websites that make helmets like these or the person that made these helmets or just reasources in general. NOT looking to leach off of anyone here just looking for direction.

Uh. Well...

I'm doing a similar cosplay, and what I'm doing for the helmet is making it out of wire and paper mache, and doing some sanding or plastic overlay. I love heat guns. Just turn a football helmet upside down, and use chickenwire to layer around the inside. Voila. Stick it on a wig stand/head if you can. Bend the wire accordingly at the bottom.. Considering I know it's hard to keep a helmet shape. You can either cut it into two pieces, and have it attatch with an inside latch or extremely powerful magnets. If the helmet has enough decorative pieces on it, you could use velcro, if you want to do it cheaply.

For the visor, we're taking clear sheets of plastic, cutting it to fit, and using a heat gun to bend it. To make it dark, we're purchasing tinting film and spray from one of the many Chicagoland tinting places that there are, and then laying that on the plastic. Probably going to use industrial hot glue to paste it in.

...I'm such a loser. I think of this stuff WAY ahead of time.

What you could also do, is purchase a lycra bodysuit (unitard), and then just sew on the white details, by hand or machine. Dance places usually have them. Youre best bet is Dancewear Solutions (http://www.dancewearsolutions.com). That's where I'm getting mine. It's only about $40 for a unitard.. Though I'm sure you'd wind up spending perhaps about the same or more to make your own.

The boots.. Well, I donno what to tell you for those. Sorry. Just follow "PsykoGamer"'s link is the best I've got.

And gloves aren't too terribly hard to make, if you have the right fabric, or you have the right store to buy them from. The fellow that "PsykoGamer" mentioned might have something.

Hope this helps!

HOLY CRAP NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THOSE SUIT!! haha thanks alot i found soem green one, so i'm gonna just order that and get someone to sew the white on... any idea on the gold sheild like what should i use?

SilencedChylde
09-16-2006, 07:47 PM
Probably two layers of cheap gold fabric with foam (That really cheap bedding stuff..) between them... Perhaps weight the front and back corners down with little pieces of metal inside of the foam.

OR... If you're going for the hard-surface thing, you could do leather. Yeah, sounds weird, but it works. If you boil the leather in hot water, and then apply it to yourself and let it cool, it takes on your shape and stays that way. So cut it into the form of a diamond (You need to be pretty strong to do this), and cut the hole so it can go over your head. Boil, and stick it over your head, and let it cool. You can do a couple of layers of that if you want to. It's not easy to work with leather, so it shouldn't be your first choice.

**BE SURE YOU WEAR SEVERAL LAYERS OF SWEATSUIT WHEN YOU DO THIS** It could be very painful if you don't!

...Don't say I didn't warn you.

while not as immediately recognizable? one can always go the civilian route. Mind you, one day I hope to go with the full helmet and suit but in the mean time? I have three completed civilian rangers...

Gao Yellow (JPN show used for Wild Force)
Deka Yellow (SPD)
and
Time Fire (Time) this one looks the same either way... so I can be Naoto or Eric.

I have an official Bouken Pink jacket that I'm working on making the rest of her outfit...

Yeah. I'm going my way with the Emo Rangers thing, and making the helmet from scratch. AKA: Wireframe, plastic, paper mache, and fibreglass. Yes, fibreglass. Fun pie.

I know this may be blasphemic to many hardcore fans, but...

I just couldn't pass up the opportunity.

I can document my progress if you guys like, so you can take the idea and make your own helmets (Power Rangers or fan-based knock-off). Would that make it easier for some people?

And the manymanymanymany pictures of mine, simply because.. Well.. Mine is currently a lot flimsier than his. I was waiting for it to fall over. Thank god it never did.

Chicken wire was lined along the inside of a football helmet (with all the padding ripped out). And where wire was overlapping, I made cuts and used twist-ties to temporarily hold it together. This is going to be the base for my helmet, and the Bleeding Heart helmet, considering Jaclyn and I are pretty much the same in way of cranial size.

20991

20992

20993

I'm sorry I forgot to take pictures of the process of the wire-framing.. I'd forgotten my digital camera, as we were doing this where we work (UPS Store). Bear (Boss) doesn't mind that we come in after hours and work on shit like this. Happy times. :3

Yay for paper mache!

...Did you know that the real Emo Ranger's helmets were made out of pipe cleaners, masking tape, and paper mache? o.o

SilencedChylde
09-27-2006, 09:48 PM
And here are the last of the pictures, more paper mache'ed than before. I'm doing a few more layers to make it sturdy, and then peeling it off so Jaclyn can have her go at a helmet. :3

Finally. Yeesh.. It took me long enough to upload stuff, huh?

I know that I've been asked to do the helmet tutorial, but if anyone wants to know how we did the rest of the costumes, I'll be more than happy to answer and give pictures.

This (below) would be Peter's helmet (Chaos Mohawk). Him and Zach (Chronic Stoner) went the same way as Jim did with the plastic skeleton, duct tape, and bondo. Oh, and they heat-bent the plastic for the visor. It has yet to be glued in and tinted.

21189

And this is the first layer of paper mache for Jaclyn's helmet (Bleeding Heart). I'm going to have to do more layers, considering when we started to bondo my helmet.. It started to lose it's shape. Even on the wire frame. Not cool. I drew on the heart that's going to be cut out, but I have to go over that again anyway with more paper mache. I failed to see a point.

21190

Mine pre-bondo. I added the cardboard for some support.. Fat lot of good that did me. Pfft.

21191

And Jimmy T's helmet, pre-glasses and hair... And gloss spray. Those images are coming up in the next post, along with how I did the fins for my helmet (http://img8.picsplace.to/img8/11/emorangers1136034329.jpg). I'll be the yellow one, if nobody's noticed. ;P

21192

SilencedChylde

These are all shots of Jimmy T's helmet.

First is another one pre-glasses, bondo, hair, and gloss.

21193

Then one with the gloss and glasses. The glasses he made out of foamies he'd painted with a layer or two of latex primer. Foamies are very porous, and tend to absorb paint like a sponge, making it a pain in the ass to glue to anything, because it has a hard time drying.

21194

Then with the hair. The hair isn't even glued together yet, done being painted, and it's not attatched to the helmet, either. It just makes the helmet look a little bit better with it there, and gives an idea of how it's going to look when finished.

21195

SilencedChylde
10-09-2006, 12:04 PM
The second fin I cut out (one of the side fins). It's smaller than the middle one.. You can see how hard this crap is to cut out. This is only 1-inch thick "pink" (as we call it), and you can see how it likes to tear away when it's being cut. Lots of little chunks are missing.

21196

Size comparison of a side fin versus the large middle one.

21197

Yeah. This stuff is horrible to cut. But that's what sandpaper is for... Keep in mind, you have to use very fine-grain sandpaper, otherwise it just makes the pink rip apart even further, and you have to be gentle. Also, you have to make sure you get as many of the loose pieces off as possible, first.

21198

All three fins, with joint compound (like spackle) to fill in the spots where little chunks were missing. This can also be sanded down with sandpaper, but takes upwards of 17 hours to dry.

21199

Size comparison with my hand. Now, keep in mind, I'm a relatively small girl, so I've got small hands.. Hence, these fins are a wee bit big. The look proportionate to the helmet (http://img8.picsplace.to/img8/11/emorangers1136034329.jpg)though, which is a good thing.

21200

And that's it. Anything else, be sure to PM, IM, or E-mail.

Forgot to mention... Ever wanna use pink, you can find it at Home Depot.. Or you could just call 1-800-get-pink. I'm serious. That's the phone number on the pink styrene foam.

NICE, Power Rangers cosplays. I've only seen a few photos of Green Ranger and White Ranger (from the MMPR series), and the DekaRed who showed up at Anime Expo this past summer. Personally, I think the Timeranger suits are just awesome, and I'd love to see more of those.

I'm actually a TOTAL Ranger fan, and I went the expensive route. Getting the authentic looking helmet, and suit and all that. We all have that one thing we just HAD to spend our whole paycheck on right? lol This is it for me. This coustume is for more than just cons for me though. I just started doing some volunteer costume work in my area, and this suit will be appreciated. Especially at the children's hospitals ^_^

Power Rangers Time Force is my all time favorite season. So I decided to make my own version of the Time Force officer uniform. It's finished except for one little piece, the badge. I got the toy in the mail yesterday (bought it from eBay), and after countless attempts to take it apart, my dad is gonna have to grind the back part off. (It looked like the face just pops off, but it's attached to the frame GRRRRR!!!)
It's also my Halloween costume :bigtu:

That is a pretty cool outfit yellow ranger. I just had these people at spandexoutfitters make me a dekared outfit and a ninjastorm red outfit and they both look outstanding. I am having my helmets professionally made and should be getting them this week. I like what you said about volunteering at the Children's Hospital. I have been asked to do some time at the one I work at as soon as my outfits come in. As soon as I get some more funds, I would love to get a dekablue outfit and possibly the dekabreak one.

I wouldn't ever have a problem commissioning a helmet for anyone, or helping them find the right bodysuit (perhaps put one together if necessary).

Kudos to those of you who can afford to buy the fibreglass replicas. God knows I'm too cheap and poor to buy those (Comes with being Polish I guess. Haha!)

Oh, yeah. More updates coming with the helmet tonight, if anyone's interested.

SilencedChylde- Your tutorial is kicka$$. When I have time, I'll probably copy and paste all the steps and print them out. It's looking cool. Can you believe that I've never paper mache'ed anything in my LIFE :lost:

Thanks for posting all the steps ^_^ too bad I'm not going to Reactor to see this in person *sigh*

And I"m not surprised about the Paper Mache thing. A lot of schools stopped doing that 'cause the kids were eating the glue. Ew. o.x;

Aaand.. Yeah! Thanks for the compliments on the tutorial! They're very much appreciated!

I too find your tutorial helpful, SilencedChylde

I'm grateful that people find it helpful. We're doing more Bondo-ing and forming the visors today (So more pics tonight).

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Emo Rangers: http://www.emorangers.com (Though, if you're a Sentai fan, you probably know of this parody)

I plan on starting another thread for those who also wish to cosplay as Emo Rangers; but the helmet tutorial is staying here, considering it can be re-used and altered to make Ranger helmets.

Any questions, feel free to ask. :3

Oh, uh.. For those of you who may have been IMing me (I've gotten a few, and don't recognize the usernames), I apologize for not replying. I've been swamped. We need to finish these this week. x.o; And school isn't helping. 2 Research papers (One for Psychology [Schizophrenia], and one for English [Graffiti as an Art Form]). Not to mention that our Bleeding Heart Ranger dropped out on us, and we had to find another one on short notice.

Heh, sorry guys. We already got her. :3

All else fails, PM or E-mail. I'll get them that way. If you need, b/l me and see whenever I don't have an away message up.

If you're going to e-mail, I advise posting, "Ranger Tutorial" or something similar in the subject line. If I don't recognize an e-mail, I usually delete it. I get too much spam.

Thanks for your compliments, guys! <3

MOAR! Yay!!

Here's some more progress...

The tinting process. Very easy. We bent some plastic with a heat gun, and unfortunately it could only be bent once or it wouldn't keep it's shape. We wet the plastic with some water, and laid the tinting film over it, and squeegee'ed it on. Easy as that.

21279

Then we went ahead and taped it to the helmet. It's all getting covered in bondo anyway.

21280

Zach wearing his helmet.

21281

Bondo'ed. The excess is going to get scraped off of the lens. After it dries, it pretty much chips off.

21282

SilencedChylde
10-15-2006, 09:35 PM
Now, my helmet was HUGE on me, so we had to crack the back, and bring it in a little bit. This of course destroyed the bondo.. As you can see by the gaping hole in the top of the helmet.

21283

Then bondo'ed back over.. You know, we still have to finish my lens. o.O;

21285

Peter's helmet all bondo'ed. All we have to do for his and Zach's now is sand, paint, and glue on the decals. Then we're done with everything!

21284

SilencedChylde
10-15-2006, 09:40 PM
Last post...

This is the process that we go through to do the foamie decals around the visors. Yes, we did the same thing for the little mouthpieces on two of the helmets, too.

I traced the visor, and drew in the design around it. Now, Peter's was so big that we couldn't fit the whole decal on one foamie, so I did it in two different sections, a total of seven pieces. I traced part of the decal onto larger paper so I could get the spikes in completely.

21286

This is how it will look completely put together...

21287

No, the spikes aren't attatched. Not enough room on the foamie. :3

21288

That's all for now.

Depends on how well it's made.. And if you sell your replica helmet.

If it's well done, you can get a minimun $35 easy.. Chances are, among cosplayers, the price will definitely go up. Especially if it's an original MMPR green ranger suit.

silenced, Im really impressed with what you were able to do. Im interested making my own so I had a few questions.

How was the smoothness of the finished helmets? The inprocess shots look really rough but the final ones look good espically for cosplay pictures, was this just because of the bondo layer? Could you go a little more in detail about how you used the bondo, like how well does it sand smooth like that and any tricks you found for that? Where are good places to buy bondo, plastic, and tinting sheets?

Thanks ahead of time

Since I'm getting that Yellow Ranger suit and helmet made, I thought it would be cool to have some Power Daggers to go along with it. You don't see to many Ranger cosplayers out there with weapons!!! Hmmm, one of the many ideas that I've gone through, with the hints of actual possibilities, would be a Goldar costume from the original US Power Rangers series. It won't be anytime soon, but I may make it happen.

Just lookin for some opinions on the idea. :D
Mind you, if you don't know me, which you probably dont, I make everything typically out of duct tape, and if some larger structural integrity is needed, cardboard. =D

i would say use the carboard as a base and work with using rubber latex or something.

but goldar would be awesome (or Grifforzer to those who watch the sentai version)

01-31-2007, 11:27 AM
If you wish to make any sentai or ranger helmet its not too hard to do once you know how. Heres what youll need besides of course reference pictures.

A dummy head
clay that can be hardened through heat
plaster and burlap
fiber weave and fiberglass resin (in the adhesives or bath supply areas at home depot or lowes)
vegetable oil or vaseline
model paint in the appropriate colors as well as clear coat
foam padding
hinges
vinyl
snaps

1.First take the dummy head and cover it in the clay and sculpt what you want the helmet to look like on it. Leave out no details folks because we're gonna turn this into a mold to cast a helmet.

2. Next take a heat gun and bake your finished sculpture until it is hard enough to be safe.

3. Next rub this sucker down in either vegetable oil or vaseline. Vaseline is good but DO NOT LEAVE CLUMPS. If you do your mold will be indented with them.

4. Next , and this part is a little tricky, were gonna make a mold of just HALF of this sculpture. You see sentai helmets dont slide on and off they open on hinges and snap over your head. To see what I mean watch when they reveal who the white ranger is and youll see tommy take off the helmet by undoing some snaps and opening his helmet.
Anyhow around the area you want your helmet to swing open you will take strips of burlap covered in plaster and lay them smoothly all over the front half of the helmet sculpture and allow them to dry. Make sure all these go on flush and smooth with no rippling or itll ruin your mold. Repeat for the back half of the helmet.

5. Next once these dry you will simply pull them off the helmet. The vaseline should act as a release agent and you should now have two objects that look like crap on the outside which have perfect smooth indentions inside them of your helmet's shape.

6. Take your halves and rub the interiors with more vaseline. Be carefull not to damage your molds.

7. Next take little strips of fiberweave and brush fiberglass resin on them then smoothly line the inside of your plaster molds interior with them until its interior shape is entirely covered and wait for these to harden completely.

8. When these harden you may either break the molds off or simply pop the cast pieces out. You may have to hardened the outise of the plaster with some fiberglass resing if you think itd break. Anyhow you now have two unpainted perfect halves of sentai helmet.

9. Dremel out the lens area on the mask and sand edges smooth with coarsest paper or possibly steel.

10. Attach hinges and cut vinyl into 2 tiny belts and attach a snap to each. Youll attach the snap bases to the sides of your helmet either with more resin or contact cement (found in flooring section for tiles or adhesives in lowes, or home depot)

11.Now the lense is a toss up because you can either contact cement seal tinted clear vinyl if your cheap in the hole's area from the inside or if you have any semi stiff plastic thats clear you can use a heat gun to melt it into the curve needed and then tint it with window tinting and attach it. Your call.

12. Now you say kick ass! Wait...IT WOBBLES!?!?! Down boy just take a dummy head and start spot gluing foam chunks to its forehead, crown, and back of head and keep placing the helmet on this thing until it wont wiggle. You then mount these pieces inside your helmet so that it wont move when you put it on. Might wanna back this with soft felt so they wont irritate your head when you wear the helmet and they push on your noggin.

13. Paint helmet.

14. Pose like crazy.

15. sticky tutorial ^_^

Talk about your process! It sounds reasonably doable, though. I recently purchased a DragonRanger helmet that, while very nice, doesn't fit me quite like I want it to. Plus, it's resin and I'd very much prefer a fiberglass one. I'm currently working on removing every scrap of padding, lining the thing with fiberglass cloth, and praying that my insane amounts of hair will both fit and provide the necessary cushioning. (And then we're painting the trim silver, because I just loved the Fighting Spirit look too much.)

While I can't afford to go to the big PR cons (*sniffle), I'm going to a smaller community con this summer and would like to look my best. That includes having a shiny, smooth and custom-fitting helmet (and boy would I KILL to have AbareBlack's) that people can whack, as one may expect them to do without so much as asking, without having to worry as much about it shattering.

Oh resin, you fickle and brittle material, you...

Anyway, approximately what is the time frame for the process that you suggest here? (Excluding of course my modeling ineptitude and the fact that it's going to take me forever to be satisfied with anything.)

Also, is there an alternative that you can suggest for something like a heat gun, for hardening the clay and the like? I am, sadly, a relatively poor college student (mostly because I simply had to own a Dragon Buckler, ack), and the big 'n' shiny tools aren't really in my inventory.

I have had it with rangerprops.com i cant get an account on it i have tried over 15 times. the admin on that page needs to change the whole validation process too worried about spammers.

actually, it's not the spammers that we worry about... it's the little kids who come on and whine about somebody making helmets for them. then whiining that they cost so much. whining and asking the same questions over and over and over again about how to make a helmet... and how come they cost so much. oh, and then they need it really bad like in two days.

Well, what about the others? I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but there are people out there who would like to do things like commission helmets and other props, and who aren't children who are going to whine about cost and wait times. I have spent large sums on props already, and am willing to spend more if I find someone able to produce something that I like, or has what I want on hand. I'm intensely interested in an AbareBlack helmet, for example - and am well aware of the high costs that would be involved.

Is there some way that the responsible adults among us can get an account? I also gave up in frustration earlier, because after some ridiculous number of run-arounds with that obnoxious refreshing confirmation code, I realised that I was never going to actually get an account that way.

(I even tried clicking on the query links in case there was some restriction in username characters, etc. that I was unknowingly violanting - but of course you have to have an account to get any answers.)

Dont worry heat guns are like fifteen bucks. sorry but I cant say that there is a safer way. I mean you could try air dry clay but given the mass of your model it would take FOREVER to dry.
As far as a time frame goes this will take awhile. First sculpting can take about an hour to get right if you know how to work clay even. Then baking it can take around 20 minutes. Then making the shell can take a hour to two then making a cast from it can take a day (mainly because you wanna let the resin harden a LOT). Painting is around 2 hours because of clear coating and drying times. Padding is touch and go so id give an hour plus. Id say give your self a nice three day weekend to do this with and take your time at each step.
Hope you all enjoy your fiberglass helmets!:bigtu:

Good chit. O.o

We finished our Emo Rangers costumes. I think I spent somewhere in the tune of $60 TOTAL on the costume (including materials).. Most of the other ones were in the area of $30-$45.

Why, thank-you very much. :3 They're real too, if you go to EmoRangers.com (http://www.emorangers.com), you'll get a good laugh. Especially if you're a fan of any Sentai series ever made. Chances are, you could look it up on YouTube, too.

Hm. I wonder if my tutorial on page 3 is getting any use...?

been really facinated with the MMPR green ranger for some time now and would love to get my childhood hero into a reality.

But the problem is that the only source I have (besides Rangerprops.com, where it takes forever for access to be cleared...) is on ebay frm a certain seller, who sells these helmets at like USD$600....and for my currency rate, it works out to ALOT (+shipping).

I would like to get the best deal and quality, but i have really exhausted all the searches with nought...

So i wonder if any of u have any sources for a MMPR green ranger helmet, preferably all done up and could share??

BTW, its nice to see so many PR fanatics!!

Now lets have a moment of silence for Thuy Trang the original American Yellow Ranger who died in a car crash in 2001.

Now that thats over with

Any one ever see a cosplayer playing the pink ranger from Lost Galaxy that was my favorite power ranger. Out of the helmet she was so dorkydorable with glasses and a radient cascade of hair like honey and gold just like my favorite nerdy lady on the bus. Just because the actress got sick they wrote her out mid season.

I would imagine the folks that make the costumes out of paper mache and other common materials don't typically have items up for sale. I do my costumes out of cardboard and whatnot, and people spending money want quality. They don't care about any personal appreciation in creating the costume, which is all I care about

So your options I would say are..

1. Find a friend, not a stranger, and ask them to make you one, or help you make one for nearly free
2. Use a tutorial and make one for nearly free
3. Buy a professional, plastic/resin/fiberglass helm that is already up for sale

Somewhere around here on cosplay.com I posted a tutorial on how to build your own helmet. I could tell everyone here how to sculpt and make there helmets out of fiberglass if you would like me to repost it.
Im currently in corespondence with a cosplayer who is doing a Kamen Rider Black cosplay helmet using this advice and he seems to have gotten some good results. Also my wife is making a Quickman helmet using something she came up with that she's calling "paper casting". This process is quite good for making the basic frame for a roundish helmet.
If anyone wants me too Ill take the time to try and post pics and repost tutorials on how to do all of this fairly easily.

1. Buy a plastic holloween mask
2. Get ceramic clay and make a big clump of it.
3. Push mask into clay to make an imprint.
4. Get balloon and blow up to size bigger that ur head.
5. Push balloon into another clump of ceramic clay.
6. Bake clay molds in ceramic oven thing.
7. Get fiberglass and put it in the molds.
8. Take dried fiberglass out and a door hinge on the top of the helmet pieces.
9. Get clamps and put on sides.
10. Paint
11. Thank me for tutorial.
12. Dont say i suck.

Okay here goes the nice tutorial on
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN POWER RANGER ETC ETC ETC HELMETS!

Step one is to make a sculpture of your helmet. The best way I know of to do this (as well as the cheapest) is to by a mannequin head roughly the size of your own.

Next is to take air dry clay and clump it all over this thing into ROUGHLY the shape of the helmet.

Next after it hardens you should draw with a sharpie on the clay the shape of the eyes and lens and etc. and then take files, sand paper of both thick and fine grits and even dremels drills etc (whatever you think you can do this part with really) and you file and sand this thing into the shape you need.

Now that your sculpture is complete rub vaseline ALLLLLLL over it (dont leave globs or clumps it should be a smooth greasy coating not a something all goopy)

Now take a jug of fiberglass resin (available in LARGE amounts for $20 at lowes and homedepot in the adhesives section) and mix it up. Dont be too afraid to use those drops of hardener when mixing this either. For an amount the size of a pepsi can of liquid I would use around 80+ drops. Dont go crazy though or itll over harden and crack so no spraying in a jet of it. COUNT THOSE DROPS.

You paint this on the greased one half at a time. For most helmets you paint on the face first and after it hardens. Then you add strips of fiber weave cloth(also in adhesives section) and paint them to this hard resin with MORE resin. Once thats dry its REALLY hard and tough because its a full on helmet piece. mark its outline and pull it off of the greased mold. THen you would paint the back half of the mold in resin repeat the weaving and remove it when its hardened. If they dont fit uniformly after wards you can sand them into shape.

If anything is not smooth itll sand so dont worry.

You connect these by attaching a hinge inside the crown of the helmet with iquid nail to bond the hinge in place. NO screw holes this way.

Next youll need to make snaps to hold the sides on correctly. If anyone remembers the white ranger removing his helmet youll know what I mean. Basically liquid nail a snap on both sides of the helmet. Cut two pieces of vinyl and attach the other half of the snaps to these. Snap them to the mounted snaps and liquid nail the new vinyl buckles to the sides of the helmet where they lay. You'll want to have them snapped before mounting to ensure a proper fit.

PAINTING
DO NOT USE ACRYLIC OR CRAFT PAINTS!!!
Many is the helmet that looked like garbage by using a cheasy paint. Instead primer the helmet with spray primer. And (your choice) you can go glossy plastic look like power rangers or metallic biker helmet look.

Power Ranger look is simple.
Find the spray color you need and spray it. If you need a custom color use airbrush paints which are modeled in design to be like car paint and just mix them.
After this buy Krylon Clear Glaze finish. Yes you could top coat with polyurethane to get that glossed finish...in like 50 coats though. Ive used this stuff and it takes ONE COAT. It takes 24 hours to set right and its incredible. Its whats used to finish ceramics and GUITARS. Use this trust me. Just check my belt buckle out on my Skwisgaar cosplay to see what one coat did.

Metallic look
Go buy airbrush paint at a craft store. It will literally say airbrush paint and be in bottles the size of craft paint. No Im not talking about car model paint. This stuff is for airbrushing designs on clothing. The thing is its based upon car paint and it works exactly the same. Its thin so metal fleck will cause the whole paint job to look metallic. If it was thicker like other paints that couldnt go through an air gun the metal fleck would just look like glitter on your helmet. Its like a paint glaze or tint and it goes on smoothly with a foam brush and wont streak.
Next buy some metal fleck in the airbrush section. This is just pulverised glitter in various colors. Want that black helmet to glisten purple like batmans tights when the lights hit it? Black airbrush paint + purple fleck mixed together and brushed on.
Want more metal? Add more fleck. Less metallic? Less fleck.
Mixing colors gets fun here folks and I encourage experimenting with this incredible stuff. Green paint with gold fleck is beautiful. Red paint with bronze fleck is awesome. The list goes on and on. GO CRAZY.

Yeah anyhow mix fleck and airbrush paint here and then use the Krylon CLear Glaze product I mentioned earlier. Its at wal-mart for $4

Now for the lens!
Cut out the area on your helmet that this will go into. You can do this several ways.
Cut plastic off a coke bottle and liquid nail it inside the helmet then use car tint on it purchased from a local glass tinter.
Use clear dark vinyle mounted in the same manner.
Go to smooth-on.com purchase crystal clear 202 liquid plastic and cast a lens off the piece you cut out in the same manner that the helmet was cast then tint it.
Your choice.

FInally making the helmet FIT. ITll wiggle. A LOT. Best method is to just slowly pack in soft bed foam until you have a nice fit. Not snug but nice. Then use spray glue on some felt and stick it to the foam for a nice soft fit.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!!!!!!

-PAPER CASTING BONUS
This is good for round helmets like megaman that have few details.
Take a balloon and blow it up to adequate size.
Draw helmet on it with marker.
Take elmers glue and paint strips of paper all over balloon.
When dry pop ballon and peal out.
YOu now have a stiffish paper helmet you can see the marker pattern inside.
Cut the pattern of your helmet off the lines that were transferred onto the paper.
Now inflate a new balloon into this helmet.
Brush on bondo to the helmet.
Then fiber resin/fiber weave the bondod helmet (the bondo SEALED the paper so it wouldnt melt and distort!)
Now sand and paint your round helmet!
Do any cutting in half and snap adding as necessary.
This was invented and showed to me by my wife when she started her quickman helmet as seen below.

Considering this takes hours of work and that its takes a fair bit of money.

sand paper

I dont think anyone will ever make one for free. Im sorry...theres just no way I can see you getting help. Just try buying a piece of this at a time slowly.

Here is a diagram I made of the procedure in a nutshell. Between clay, resin, and a mannequin head I know that its easily about $35 if your precise enough to do it with a small jug of resin. Me I add layers for that added toughness.
Bondo is great stuff to sculpt with on paper casts if your doing a helmet off of a paper mold like my wife's Quickman helmet but ordinarily bondo wont get used for these kind of helmets. Youd just be adding a step. Fiberglass all the way.
Anyhow heres the diagram. I've had to post this for several folks recently so enjoy!

and also shoawebb i think there's an easier way to do this...bcuz ur method is missing something...let me explain, after building up a resin the outer shell won't look detailed but clumpy so there was no reason to sculpt clay in the first place so here's my method/theory and im sorry if it's wrong, but im just spitballing here

hey shadowebb Im really close to getting started on your technique but Im wondering something. Some fiberglass tutorials have you put rubber over the head let that dry and pull it off so you have an inverted mold, you then put the fiberglass into that. Will your way be able to maintain detail of the clay version? Im doing deka red which doesnt have a lot of detail so it shouldnt be a problem Im thinking.

Also how do you do the visor? do you punch out a whole where the visor should be?

ooooooooooooh ur talking about rubber jacket casting? where you put mold builder around ur helmet? well that stuff works good but ehre's the problem....those r 50 bucks per GALLON~!!!! and also to make sure that it'll stay in piece you need to put plaster over it....cost money but u know it saves u time

shaowebb
04-19-2007, 03:23 PM
hes talking about the negative molding technique used buy bioweapons.com for the guyver helmet.
His helmet had A LOT of small details and putting fiberglass on it directly would've broken pieces off his sculpture during the removing of the fiberglass.

Negative molding is in all honesty the way to go for fine details.
All you do is put some liquid rubber on the greased statue and then cover that rubber with plaster or fiberglass afterwards to lend it support so that the rubber does not bend and lose shape when removed.
THE INSIDE of this piece when removed now has the shape of the sculpture. You then grease up the inside of it and put your fiberglass in that.
This is how you make a mastermold so you can cast multiples of a helmet.
This is a bit more expensive but it requires less finishing with sand paper.

There right though...rubber to make the negative molds with is expensive.
If you can afford to do this I say do it. My tutorial is how to do this a little cheaper by cutting out this step but it does require more elbow grease to make sure your details hold up.

Heres a pic of what there talking about.
This is one seriously fine detailed helmet to cast.
http://www.bioweapons.com/BIOWEAPONS/images/Gallery/GuyverHelmet0002.JPG

So when he got a sculpture he lubed it and coated it in rubber
http://www.bioweapons.com/images/ArmorCasting/HelmetCast06s.jpg
Then plaster
http://www.bioweapons.com/images/ArmorCasting/HelmetCast10s.jpg

Then fiberglass too and he can cast his helmet out of the things insides.

I asked my mother (who's dress maker) said that there's a paint for the leather gloves, which i didn't know and for boots i would just buy one off of cosworx.com and paint them too whatever color i want if i do purchase the boots im going to cut the back so it'll be more fit around my legs and not too roomy and add zippers like the real sentai........HEY IT'S BETTER THAN PAYING 150 BUCKS THAT ARE MADE OUT OF VINYL WHICH IS JUST A COVER OF HOUSE SLIPPERS.......i found that price ridiculous and i e-mailed the guy saying "PUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH" and that's all it was written.......O____O

Well considering the bondo you already added is pretty stiff no and yes.
You see a good knock and bondo will crack. Drop your helmet and its gonna be pretty screwed. So when you coat that in just resin its like adding a thin layer of plastic really. Not too thick and not adding much to its sturdiness because its just gonna act like a thick top coat.
Thats why you get the weave. It adds a few millimeters of sturdy fiberglass stiffness to the helmets body. It can now be dropped or rapped on with a knuckle to no bad effects. Its actually now as tough as a biker helmet. Thats what I go for in my helmets. Idiot proofing. God knows it can roll off a shelf or table and that people will want to "test" it with a knuckle because its a helmet.
So if your certain that it will not be put to any sort of "test" by ill fate or fans then you really dont have to add the weave but id advise you to do so anyways just to make it sturdier. Its a little tougher to sand but its worth it in my eyes.

For helmets that have a lot of detail you should cast your sculpture from a negative mold thats made from rubber brushed over your sculpture and yes then fill it in with resin first when casting out of this rubber mold but no it will still need weave for durability. Resin by itself can be cracked open with a sharp wrap of a knuckle. Ive done it to test a resin coated polystyrene Tales of Symphonia shield before and that shield cracked like an egg.
Youll use less resin by negative molding this thing and by going in this order.
-layer of resin
-coat previous layer with fiber weave (can use masking tape to place it to previous layer)
-layer of resin on top of weave to harden it and bury tape.

heres a pic of it being done to my wife's quickman helmet.
Also before sanding it helps a lot to spray sandable primer onto the helmet. It makes it a lot easier to see all the areas that need worked when its coated rather than when its semi clear as just resin.

-(note someone asked about the boomerang being red on Quickman's helmet. That boomerang was made of paper so it was sealed with masking tape and acrylic paint to prevent fiberglass resin from eating into and through the paper and the paint was red.)

EDIT: BONUS! Sneak preview early pics of my own Crashman helmet being made! Its currently just been papercasted off of balloons. The brim is just taped on for pics and nothing is mounted or reinforced yet with bondo but still me and my wife's megaman helmets are moving quickly!
Im going to try stiffening the outside of this paper mother with some bondo and then casting the helmet out of its insides using the whole thing as a negative mold. If it works no sanding for me! Pure smooth round goodness will be my reward. If it fails ill need to start over though...should work if I lightly brush a coat of resin inside of it first to lube up and cast off of when it hardens.

Hey ok well there are trully many ways to make helmets as most of my members will tell you.

1st - You will need to do the sculpt and recommend using oil based clay!

2nd- Once you get the sculpt of the helmet done time for the hard part learning to mold and cast!

"Prop Makers Guide to Molding and Casting - Thurston James"

Get this book it will show you some stuff.

Molding and casting can be very very costly ... Trust me I know I am almost finished with my Red Lightspeed Helmet now!!!

Hello,

I am planning to dive into the world of Super Sentai cosplaying. My goal is to start working on Hurricane Blue from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger (Ninja Storm) withing the next few months to a year.

I've already checked ebay and I am having a very hard time finding any accessories related to this series- mainly to this ranger. I figured already that I would have to at least make the morhper, helmet and possibly the sonic megaphone myself. Some cosplayers think its better to have a perfect looking out fit rather then one an imperfect one you made yourself, I think the opposite. There is nothing about hurricane blue that is impossible to do. The helmet is a simple shape one with a peice over the eyes added on. You could mold a simple round head mold then do the fiberglass ontop of that, sand it down, maybe add some bondo to fill in gaps then make the top part out of something as simple as craftfoam or something. For the sword there is an excellent cardboard katana guide in this forum. A detailed morpher might be the tuffest thing to make but it should be the easiest part to buy if you have too. I really recommend making it yourself and dont use the kid toys for props (except for maybe the morpher)

Important note. Use sandable primer on helmets to smooth out textures and to level out slightly dinted areas of a cast. My wife's quickman cosplay helmet had a lot of small areas smoothed in and a few textures that were creasing it up. 2 minutes of spraying layers of sandable primer into areas made it a smooth nigh polished piece ready for some light sanding.
