I hope this is in the right place...I'm not sure where else to put it ^^vv

Has anyone heard of this new anime con in Toronto that's being held in November, I believe? My friend got a flyer in the mail about Con no Baka a while ago and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of it or whether they'll attend it.

Sorry, I know I'm going to come across as a complete b*tch, but if CnB they're going to have to make it a lot more appealing than asking me to spend as much on it as Anime North and then asking me to 'make my own fun'. Just my 2 cents worth.

I may be going! I should find the website (if there is one) cause I need time and locations (I lost the flyer ^^'). My cosplay plans are indefinate but so far it looks like it'll be;

1) Sodina from Thousand Arms
2) Hitomi from Escaflowne
3) either InuYasha if I don't wanna make anymore costumes, or I'll try and make Cecilia from Wild Arms (the origianl one).

The timing just plain sucks for us uni students - way too close to exams for me to be able to take a weekend off.

...Yeah...that was the major turn off for me. That together with the whole "make our own fun" thing.

After a bit of throwing the idea around, the basic idea that me and my friends wound up with is "pay the same price as AN, but you're doing the same stuff that you can do elsewhere for free."

That and you don't get to "scare the norms" like you'd get to do if you just hit up a mall in costume. XD

And as much as I love going to cons...and hate studying. Exam time still forces me to at least pretend to be a decent student. >_>

I am unsure of this con as well. One it's too expensive and two for a first year con there could only be 100 people there for all I know. No way I'm paying that for a possible very slow con. However I am interested and that might get the better of me.

The best thing you can do is give it a chance! ^^ The more people who take that chance, the less likely it will "bomb". And when you are there, don't be too quick to judge. GCAF had its first year, and tho it was small, it was very successful to those who gave it the chance. Anything can be just wonderful if you approach it with an open mind. I'm glad your curiosity may get the best of you. ^-^

I'm thinking that CnB will probably lose a lot of attendees due to the bad timing w/ nearly all the university/college students heading into exams, and the price for reg will probably cause a lot of people to bail as well.

I'm in the "uni students heading into exams" bunch, but I slack off enough that as long as it's not during the middle of finals, I'm not likely to skip a con to study. However, I like my conventions big and I like having my friends in tow. This one will be lacking both, so the appeal is dropping like a rock. -_-;;

I'm prolly going to end up going, my plans MAY change, but *shrugs* I'll probably end up going anyways. As for costumes, I believe I'm doing Meis from Thousand Arms and Midou Ban from Get Backers... yeah, I know, crossplays, but that's why I'm going to Con no Baka ^^" I was "conned" into cosplay groups... excuse the pun ^^"

I understand. ^-^ You can't put the important things of life on hold for things like conventions. I'm in no way condeming those who choose not to go. Heh, if the things you love about something are not there, then there is no reason at all to "give it a chance". I agree with your opinion.

I however, love the light nature of new cons, and thankfully, I WILL have friends in tow. My friends who can't go to CNA are very happy to be able to attend this con with me. (Rutherford is especially drawn to the name "Idiots Convention" heh heh). I look forward to meeting everyone at the con! ^^ Cheers!

Oh, by the by, I have changed my cosplay plans! Since RuFu can come, me and him have some cosplay we wish to attack.
1) Hitomi from Escaflowne
2) Sueng Mina from Soul Calibur (we may do this at this con or maybe Anime North)
2) Milfeulle from Galaxy Angel

There are a whole bunch of others I want to cosplay, but more than three gets exhausting. I have attempted this before, and I find that having to change costumes mid day takes away the fun of being a character for the whole day, I become detached from the "in Chharacter" thing I like to do. But I WILL bring InuYasha, due to habit, and the fact that me and RuFu can't help but cosplay as Inu and Miroku. We also must whip our friend into finishing her Sango costume. ^^

my thoughts EXACTLY, Amy the Yu!
But I can see that some people are crazy about anime, and anxious to be around it. Anime North and CNX are more than enough for me, and I consider them as vacations. I have little interest in spending $300+ doing exactly the same thing I do at AN or CNX, but in lesser dosages. Plus, AN and CNX are in the summer. Cons during the school year I wouldn't attend.

So, there's my explanation of why I don't give new cons a chance ^^;
If I could throw the money around, I would. But college, night school, a car, and a social life... on top of an apartment and trip to Japan to save for. Plus i can only be around otaku so often x_x
I hope CnB does well anyway. Not too keen on the name though (remembers raising an eyebrow when I got the brochure)

Unfortunatley, I can't really reason spending $45 at the door for a first time, social con. Though the idea of a 'make your own fun' style convention is rather appealing to me, since that's what I do at every Ghetto! Con Hobbystar has, I also only have to pay 10/20 dollars for what I think of as a 'space rental fee'. While seeing everyone will be fun, I have the feeling that the poor timing, along with the unrealistically high entrance fee, will severly limit their actual attendance.

Since this con is still kinda far off yet, I have again changed my plans.

Sodina from Thousand Arms, Milfeulle from Galaxy Angel, and InuYasha from...well you know.

I'm gonna try and just have those three. Don't wanna have ta change costumes in the middle of the day like at most cons. Oo' Two of the costumes are for groups, and InuYasha is cause...hes wonderful. ^^

I suppose I'd go for a day if I can make it out there. I'm moving downtown for school so there is a 50/50 chance depending on who else I can go with.

Although it'd be really great to go to the VERY FIRST trial of a new con, and see how differently they expect it to be run from many other cons we've already become accustomed to, for me it all comes down to

Can I get the time off work?
and
Are my friends into going?

Well, this con sounds interesting enough. I don't really go to cons for events anymore, and the less people, the better, in my opinion. Crowds get to be a bit of a bummer sometimes. With less people, it's more personal and you get to know more people quickly. It all really comes down to whether or not I'll have a job and money by then.

I just really would like to know how one can win an AnimeLARP and what these anime plays are supposd to look like. Other than that I am going "how much?! to do what?!". I paid 45 dollars to get an Anime Pass for Canada's largest con event. I doubt I'll b paying the same amount for a first con.

since we're on this topic of whether it's worth going or not... do you guys think it's even worth getting a table at Artist Alley? I'm thinking of AA coz my one and only con friend left Canada... so i'm all alone now T^T and I really dunno if i'll be able to have any fun going to a con and cosplaying alone. At least if i'm at AA, I can sit there and keep myself busy O_o

I was going to go but then I realized that it takes place on... BLACK FRIDAY! I work in retail -_-;; I would never be able to get off that weekend... plus it seems kind of expensive for a first con as everyone pointed out already and I suck at making my own fun lol... I guess it's riding on me having the weekend off and having an excess of money. But rent comes first ^^v I still have a reservation just in case I change my mind because my friends and I love the hotel- I mean it has waterslides! that's awesome!

Greetings!

We're glad to hear that many of you are coming and are sure that you will have a great time at Con no Baka.

Thought I should add some updates for the Con.

Pre-registration for indiviuals and groups have been extended to October 15th. if paying online, the full membership is $32.50CAN less if you organize a group registration.

The at the door rates include single day rates. you could come Friday or Saturday to check things out, then upgrade to the rest of the weekend if you like what you see. And we're sure you'll love what we are putting together

For cosplayers, we are currently testing lighting and backdrops to ensure that we can provide a great photographic area for photoshoots of groups and individuals.

As for the price, there are a number of ways to get refunds for some ofr all if you are strapped for cash. Being a volunteer, being on a panel or running a game can reduce the cost of attending, and still leave you plenty of time to enjoy the con. Check the website for updated info.

thanks,

Con no Baka insider,
JoetheBarbarian

I'm going and I'll have something in the artist alley. It was a lot of money for such a small con. I hope people are in the mood to buy stuff cause I hate coming back from cons even broker than when I went. I'm looking forward to the room party with my friends more than anythign else. Hopefully they'll buy me pockey so I won't starve. And it's another excuse to cosplay and have fun for a weekend. I luv the japanese restaurant at the double tree, their seafood salad is awesome.

I generally ignore most official con events anyways no matter how well they're planned. I went to TT for three years before I ever even saw their masq, we always went out for dinner instead or lining up. It's just silly to line up for that long. I still haven't seen a AN masq yet and I don't really want to either. And I've only ever been in one masq before, and that was to help out my little sis at this years NAF. She was so cute in her lolita gear i couldn't say no.

hmmmm...i was thinking of going to it...it would be my first con...but the price...$45....O.o i don't know about that...that's a lot of money to spend for a con, in my opinion....and lots of ppl on here seem to have doubts about how well it'll do? i'm making a kaorinite (from sailor moon) costume....the black one she wore after she 'died'.....so what are some other cons that are coming up soon, that maybe would be a better option?

Brita_Lee
10-06-2005, 11:17 PM
Well, they do have one day passes for a smaller amount of money than the $45 for the weekend. So I wouldn't give up hope. Smaller cons in a lot of ways are more fun thn larger ones, but that of coarse is my own personal opinion.

If you are looking for something more popular and sooner than AN, there is always the December TAC and March TAC. Both are hobbystar events and both held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Go to their website for more info. ^^

Yay! I got a job! Assuming it pays well and soon (and I get to book off the Saturday of CnB) I'm going with a small gaggle of friends! ^^ I don't see why everyone's complaining about the price! Anime North was $45 at the door for the whole weekend. Toronto Trek was a whomping $65 at the door. If Con no Baka makes their prices cheap this year, people will only complain when they raise the price to normal standards in a few years. :S

Since kels is dragging me there (and I promised someone else ice cream) I'll be going for at least Saturday. And I'll probably wear either Ichigo (some sort of him, either Bankai [if hikarilight goes as our sexy Ishida =P] or maye strawberry captain) or I'll go as Kira seed civilian (since I'll have that one finished by at least the Ontario Science Centre trip a week before CnB and it's probably more comfy than Ichigo :bigtu: ). I'm buying my fabric Friday...*pouts* I'm also worried since my talior hasn't returned any of my messages and I have my jacket being made by her...*worries*

Me and my friend were about 3 weeks behind schedule but we stayed up till 530 am one nite and caught up!!! now we're only a week and a half behind...

and since I had to leave due to a funeral...we're now half a week behind...

Weapons are so hard to make!!!
But I think this weekend we're gonna work our bums off again!!
FUN!!!

Can't wait to show off all our hard work!!!

I've seached the Con No Baka website up and down and I'm pretty sure that they don't state the price of a one day pass. I need to know, because if it's not that much cheaper I might as well stay for the whole weekend.

Registering at the door for those 14 and older

$40CDN for On-Line Pre-Registration
$45CDN for the full weekend
$20CDN for Friday
$30CDN for Saturday
$20CDN for Sunday

Payment at the door must be in cash, CDN dollars only

That was on the webby site....
but if you pre-reg online its $40....

see if I were to go any day it would be Sat. (best fun, dance, masq., best cosplayers) but in this case I would just spend the extra $10 to get the whole weekend,.....more bang fer yer buck....

Thats what I did.....
*is excited*

Hope I could help!!!

Thanks Kaido!! Yea, my friends and I contemplated for awhile after I showed them the prices for a one day pass and such. And finally we decided just to stay the whole weekend for an extra 10$, just like you decided. ^.~

I'll be there the whole weekend, as A/V staff I guess. I seem to be pulling a dual role as one of the staff photographers as well, but it's pretty up in the air.

No cosplay for me this time around.
