View Full Version : YOUR favorite Final Fantasy

Here's something that nobody can agree on... but I thought it might be interesting just to see which game from this series is the most popular on these forums. ^_^ You can rationalize your opinion, but please don't cause any bloodshed. If there's one thing I've learned about FF fans, you just can't change their opinions, no matter what you say!

Sorry to everyone who absolutely loves FF2 or FF3 best. They seemed like the safest to leave off, since they were never released in the states and only a few people have played them. Oh, and to all those big Mystic Quest fans, I doubt that anybody likes that game better than all the others. ^^ It's cute and all... but... If there happens to be a die-hard MQ fan out there, please speak up!

That all being said, my favorite is definitely FF9. I'm probably the only one, since people I meet who like 9 almost always prefer 4 or 6. The biggest deciding factor for many FFs, for me, is the main character (I simply adore Zidane ^_^). I love all the characters in FF9, even some of the totally unimportant NPCs. I prefer the less-technological worlds. And, for what it's worth, I don't like customizing my characters with Magicite, Materia, or by drawing and linking, etc. I like having a character who's a fighter or a white mage or a black mage or a thief... FF9 is also incredibly light-hearted relative to the rest of the series, and I appreciate that. The story is pretty good- not great (I really loved the plot of FFT, though it's really confusing the first time you play it). The game is cute, it makes me laugh, but it does have some sad moments. Having beautiful music and graphics is just the icing on the cake. ^_^

This was very hard for me.. only because I had to pick between three of them. ^_^; I liked FF4(2) because it had one of my favorite characters of all time -- Kain! And FFTactics was just ultimately cool and I LOVED the character designs, and the in-game sprites, and the strategy feel to it. ^__^

But, I picked FF6(3), which will always and forever be my favorite Final Fantasy game. It was one of the first "real" RPG's I played and it left me with so many wonderful memories.. the Opera scene where Celes sings, Locke's flashbacks to he and Rachel running through the mines/caves, the death of Leo and that little pixelated sword in the gravesite.. definitely a classic, even by today's standards I think. ^___^

I really haven't been a big FF fan from 8 on (I was a fan of 8 for a while, but it just.. didn't do it for me) but I think since the older games were some of the first ones I played, they left such a memorable impact on me that nothing has been able to usurp (bigword!) since. ^_^

I totally think Tactics is the most fun to play. I love strategy games, and even though it has too much micromanagement, once you figure it out, it's addicting! XD It definitely has the niftiest character designs (bleh, I HATE FF9 character designs).

Hehe, I've been a diehard FF4 fan for over 10 years, claiming that it was the greatest thing ever. ^^;; I feel bad betraying my old favorite, but FF9 is just better. One of the reasons FF9 is so nifty is because it has soooo much that seems to be taken straight out of FF4. I'm not a huge fan of FF6, though I do think the opera scene is one of the best video game moments, ever! Edgar & Sabin are awesome, as well. And Ultros (Uncle Ulty, bwahaha)! Coolest villain ever. ^_^

My favorite Final Fantasy is 6 too! It was the first RPG I played and the first game I had played in....5 years? (Gap in time due to my brother selling all of his games, and I never saw them again.) I don't absolutely adore any 'one' character, but I loved the story, and for its time, the graphics were good. The music was very touching at times, too. (Loved the opera scene!)

Greetings,

I had to choose FFVI because I think it had the best story and most memorable characters from the FF series.... and like mentioned the opera scene which I think is one of the best moments in gaming.

But the game had Relm-chan who is just adorable as well a Terra and celes were were wonderfly written and Kefka who is the biggest badass / psycho in FF history.

After that I can't decide between Mystic Quest or FFIV. I loved them both for differant reasons.

FRom,
Joe

P.S.
I still need tp play FFIX and FFX

As hard a decision this was, I had to pick FF6 for the exact same reasons as Sami. I will say this though: I do like the junctioning in FF8, but I liked the different type of simplicity in FFIX/X. There's just something to be said about a level of character customization.

Edit: Oh, and "Yay, Chocobos!"

I like 8 cause it had a different sort of story and it had great music. I also like 10. I don't really play the older ones, but I'll try.

I have no clue where my copy of Tactics came from, but it was there, staring me in the face until I played it. Final Fantasy took a whole new direction, and it was one of the most fun times I had wasting my life. It's like destiny stepped in and demanded I play it. Good times, good times. But FF6 just has those attachments and good ol' days feelings...

but i had to go with 9 cause of all the sidequest stuff. ^_^

;_; Do you know how HARD it was choosing between VI and VIII?

But I have to go with VI. I think I love both games equally, but FFVI has that mega-obsession factor. Plus I like Amano better than Nomura (although Nomura's designs translate better into games, I adore Amano's style). I've never played any RPG so many times as VI, because I seriously love all the characters. Yeah, we know which one I love the best ::coughcoughLockecoughcough:: but Terra's sweet, and Edgar's hilarious, and there will never be another villain like Kefka.

And yeah, I'm shutting up now :).

Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy Tatics.

FF4. My personal favorite cast and plot (favorites being Edge, Rydia, and Cecil). Second would be FF6, but I didn't really care about half the people in there sad as it may be ^^; (favorites are Locke, Sabin, and Gau!).

I really did want to like 5, but playing it on the PSX wasn't doing much for me, and I got bored and stopped near the end. :( Think I lost that memory card too, so oh well.

Im pretty much an FF rookie honestly, having only played 7 on up, I had started playing 6 and am sorry I didn't finish it considering all the great things I hear about it.

So my personal fave is 7, tentatively until I can get my hands on 6 to finish it.

I know it's like...a Final Fantasy sin, but I like 10 the best. I am sick of people whining that "voice acting ruins it" and the graphics "completely ruin the old school feel" and the battle system is "too easy," etc...

I. LOVE. 10. And I'm not just saying this because it's the newest, no, i didn't like 7, then 8, then 9, then 10. In fact, I found 8 mediocre, and HATED 9. 10 just seemed to bring it all back for me. I LOVED the characters; Tidus, Yuna, Wakka, Lulu, Auron, Rikku, Kimahri, etc... they were so solid in their personalities that it was a joy to see them develop. The graphics were amazing, the sphere grid system was great for customization, weapon articulation ruled, and the ending wasn't as happily-ever-after stereotypical as 8 and 9 had been.

While I agree that FF's seem to be getting easier, you can't hold that against 10. I personally look for a game that gets me INVOLVED. For a LONG time, when I wasn't playing X, I was still thinking about it, sort of like a good book. A FF Hadn't done that for me since 7. THAT makes a great game.

Aw, I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring FFX. It is the most recent, so it makes sense for it to be great. ^_^ Honestly, I haven't played it yet, because I'm sort of behind on the FFs. I was kind of depressed after playing 7 and 8, so I just tried 9 back in September. I figure I'll get to 10 one of these days! As for easy battle systems, FF9 is retardedly simple. Once you get auto-this and auto-that, it's really hard to lose. ^^ If a game has good characters and plot, it's actually sort of nice to have an easier battle system, so you can focus more on the story instead of the fighting.

:x that was a hard choice. I like em all (well, haven't played below V, but yeah)

I chose VII because its what hooked me on those games. *_* A friend had it and I started playing it.. and. didn't.. stop.. for 19 hours. Straight. No food, nothing. ::lol:: after VII... I dunno... its all good. ^.^

I love the story and world design of 8... that's my pick. Second would probably be 10... then 6, which I havn't finished yet, but love, then 7...
Of that list, I have not played FF9 or Tactics, and I'm yet to beat 4-6 and 10 (workin on 10 though!)

Picking a favorite FF is hard x.x; I mean, 9 is awesome, 8 has great romance, 10 is cool because of the new graphics and all of that...how can you choose just one?

Zephyrs
01-20-2003, 03:36 PM
it IS such a hard choice, there's only 2 FF games that are definantly out of the running for me (FF8 and FF9... yeah yeah I couldn't even bring myself for the obligatory 2nd run-through on either...) FFIV was my first, FFVI brought me near tears, FF7 with it's MINIGAMES and SIDEQUESTS up the wall, Tactics requiring lots and lots of brain cells... wow.

I must say FFVII is my favorite....easily....though I love Mystic Quest too...It seems like no one really liked Mystic Quest. I think it was probably the least Final Fantasy like Final Fantasy, if that makes sense. But FFVII is great...I like all the ones I've played, but it's the only one that has been able to hold me in. Plus...Vincent...mmmmm....His past is so sad!! :: huggles Vinnie :: My friend sucked me in. But all the Final Fantasy games have some of the best video game music....

9... Tactics... 9... Tactics... AGH! Can't decide!

I loved 6 when it first came out, but sadly when I got the PSX reissue, it didn't hold up quite as well to my fond memories. ^^;; Thus why I'm kind of afraid to replay 4 because I remember liking that one a lot too. I hated 5, though. I never even finished it because the writing drove me insane. I loved 7, and hated 8 even more than 5. ^_^;; And 10's writing also drove me up the wall. (Not the battle system, or the graphics, or the voice acting... the actual story/script. Hated it. Of course, this is only my opinion...)

But 9 and Tactics have to share the top spot. I'll replay them and power-level and try to get all the obscure treasures because they're just so much FUN! I love the characters, the story, the world, the art, the gameplay... just about everything. (Though FF9 did have plot holes at the end large enough to swallow the moon. Okay, Tactics wins after all!)

But I'll stop now... ^_^;;

Yay, Tactics finally has a vote! ^_^ I felt bad for it, because it's so great that it deserves a vote. It's just not my favorite.

>It seems like no one really liked Mystic Quest.

I *loved* MQ. It was my first console RPG. ^_^ It's too simplistic, but this was excellent for a beginner. It is short and cute, and does have good music, though it's not Uematsu.

Well, It's a hard choice. But if I had to pick, it'd be 6. The storyline was beyond anything I've seen/read. So involving and moving. Especially to think that a Jester like Kefka can end up almost destroying the world (GWB anyone?). But luckily, I don't have to choose. CHOCOBOS!!!! YAY!!! XD

It's hard to decide, but I'd go with 9. The simplicity of the game and layout were great for me. *happy times*

8 is in a close second, but the way that I got lost so many times after saving, stopping, and resuming really got me confused @_@... I'm still in the same place that I've been at in 10... somewhere in the Calm Lands.

All my friends think that 7 is the best, and when they found out that I hadn't played it yet - though now I've bought it, but haven't played it yet - they nearly strangled me... @_@

I really liked FF8. I have to fess up to say I've never actually *finished* an FF game yet. -_- but I can always go back and play FF8 from the begining and not be unhappy about it.

There's just something about Squall and Rinoa and the rest of the gang that makes me feel at home.

The other thing is that I tend to like sci-fi type themes, and though I've played 7-X in bits and peices, 8 was always more sci-fi to me. There was more tech and less magic. That's just me, I prefer tech to magic. :)

Though I have to say that in X they really did a nice job refining the fighting system, and it's nice to have shortened summons, but my heart will always be in FFVIII :)

I'm not too sure I have a favorite (of course Ive only completed 3 myself) but I'm rather familiar with most of them.

I dont really have a fave. .each game had its goods and bads. .but so far they've been equal enough to where one doesnt stand out in my mind. But Im thinking when I get my anthology shipment 6 will be my fave (heh. .like Celes waay too much)

02-06-2003, 04:52 PM
Agh, Anthology. Did anyone warn you about it? ^^ Sure, it's nice that they released FF5 & 6 on the PSX, but they made them suck! The load times are atrocious, the sound is of a poorer quality than the original, and it's overall not as enjoyable as experience as it was on the SNES. Err... I hate the Anthology edition, regardless of the new save features and nifty little cg scenes. I just downloaded the scenes and kept playing my original SNES copy and the rom. The Anthology just isn't worth the price unless you are a diehard Square collector.

Final Fantasy 4, no not 2, 4.

The story is awesome, the characters are heroic, and of course there's Edward, I mean, come on, what a powerhouse.

( but i will do it, especially with origins coming out in april)

I agree with Amano Jyaku mostly. I loved 9. It was hilarious, (Zidane swinging from cieling by tail). Actually, I am going as the Black Waltz 3 for Otakon 2003. Yeah!
I loved Squall (HUGS squall) I love the antisocial cutie! from 8, but the junction system was a pain, and I was disappointed that they completely got away from the crystals theme. :(
:P Otherwise, 7 was GREAT! But ten would have to be my least favorite, because of the strange ways to level up. Guess I could be stubborn though... :D

I like 7 the most out of all the final fantasys there were, since the characters were the coolest to me (had to like Cloud and the sword, Seiphroth too [spelled name wrong, I know it]). I could quite get into the flow with 8, cause Squall talked, or thought, to himself a little to much for my taste (cloud was insane for a part of the game and didn't talk to himself as much). I though final fantasy 9 was funny cause it was the first time I've seen The lead character of a FF try to be a ladies man, lol, and i liked the fact you could use 4 people at once. FFX ranked up 2nd to me cause it seemed pretty cool (still haven't finished the game yet, so it may be better when i finish it). My little brother has played tactics over and over again and has ruined the playing expierence for me, cause even when i try to play he'll play my game while im at work, plus the game belongs to him.

Picking a fav. FF is like favorite child, but it comes down to choosing FF7 or FF8 for me. Granted 8 has better graphics and a cooler cast of heroes (in my opinon at least), 7 has the best story, the coolest soundtrack, and the best villians..not to mention one of THE saddest moments in video game history with Aerith's death.

from there I guess I'll say 8,6,9 and 10 would complete my top five fave FFs, but if Xenosaga's any good, I'm probably gonna have to redo my favorite rpg list.

Big time fanboy so long post.

Man, me and Stryfe debate this all the time. They're all just too good! I really do think each game has the "best" of a particular aspect of the game, so here are my choices by catagory:

Story: FFVI
--------------------------------
Without spoiling it, the side stories for all the characters, the changes that happen to the world. Definately the best.

Mini-Game: FFVIII
--------------------------------
While Blitz ball was insanely addictive, I liked the collecting aspect of Triple Triad and all the regional rules kept it fresh.

Setting: FFVII
--------------------------------
FFX was very pretty, no denying it. FFVII however had the most diverse settings IMO. You went from grungy, grimy Midgar to Costa Del Sol. Nibelheim was picturesque, all around best world.

Characters: FFIV
---------------------------------
Without a doubt. Kain is my favorite character of all time. First game ever where your main characters come and go, there's love, friendship, deciept, betrayl, the interrelations between characters is awesome. FFVI is definately second, as it has probably the strongest development of characters but that is due to the story and it is already getting props for the story. FFVI has more independent characters in my view where the characters in IV seem to be more of a family.

Character Classes: FFT
--------------------------------
FFV started the job system and it was awesome, however, in Tactics you really felt it. The battles are what made the classes superior here than in any other game. Since you had so many characters on screen and using their abilities together, the seperate classes were truly great.

EXP System: FFX
--------------------------------
I know alot of people griped about the Sphere Grid, but I really liked it. I enjoyed swapping party members so that they could get experience. You didn't have characters left behind or that you just totally avoided. The grid allowed for a personal touch to the character development.

I could come up with others for I, II, V, and IX but I think this post has gone on long enough. One final word, for those of you that only played I, IV and VI on PSX, you really need to try it out on NES and SNES, without the INSANE load times, it'll take you half the time to finish it.

FF1, FF3j, FF4, FF6j, FFT

FF1, FF3j, and FFT for the class system. Being able to try out different parties is nifty.

FF4: Memorable characters, straightforward storyline

FF6: Memorable characters, top-notch script translation, Kefka, and the 12-person final battle!

I couldn't chose between them. I remember playing each one and loving the series more as I play each new FF.

I loved the challenge of FF1, especially at my age then. It helped me learn how to read better. ^_^

FF2 and FF3 I didn't play till about a year ago, but it reminded me a lot of FF1 but with more story which was good.

FF4 I liked to replay a lot since it was short and sweet.

FF5 had a good story and a good new system. Faris was a cool character!

FF6 was my fav. then. The story line was so awesome. I love the way Kefka laughs. Celes was like an idle for me.

FF7 I played late because I wasn't too involved in the gaming world anymore then. I loved the story and seeing an FF in 3D knocked me out. Since then I'd always look foward for release dates when each FF came out.

FF8 is currently my fav. to replay. I must of been through the game more than 10 times now. Squall is so funny to me. When I first heard the opening fmv before the game was out. I was so shocked to hear it had voices in the song. I played FF7 on the PC so my graphics/audio card sucked so bad so I didn't get to hear Sephiroth's Song at the final battle. (This is the same damn computer) I didn't have a PS b/c I didn't know anybody else that did. So I also played FF8 very late. I loved the change to realism.

FF9 was funniest FF I ever played. Loved the storyline also. I played this one on time b/c I borrowed a PS. I finished this in 4 days. In my opinion I think that FF9 had the best music.

FFX..great a new platform. I just finally bought a PS a few months ago. My friends made fun of me because I bought FFX before I even had a PS2. A month and few days later(I had been saving that whole year and worked for ever damn cent) I paid the full of price of $300 + tax. 4 months later they cut the price of the PS2, but it was so worth it. I finished FFX in 3 days. I couldn't stand waiting more. The graphics and the music were so cool. The storyline was very good too. I'm sounding a bit obsessed am I?

So I been through a lot because of this series. I couldn't possibly choose just one as my fav. Each had its own valuable lesson, and each made you think about things you never thought about thinking about. I guess that is why I am so stuck with this series, and why I waiting so bad for FFXI and the first sequel FFX-2 to come out. So to all those FFXI Beta players: your so damn lucky..

Alright I'm finished babbling now. ^_^

I like FF 10 and 8, because of their storyline, the music, and everything there is about them. I also like 9... But they are all very awesome, and I love 'em to death.

I like FFX and FFVII the most. I like them for the characters, music, plot, and scenery.

How is it possible to choose? Well, hmm, let me think. I haven't played all of those, only FFI, FFVI-X and of course MQ. ^_^ though i don't consider mq as an ff... Ahem, well...

Ok, in a way, FFVII is _the_ best FF _ever_. The characters are great (yummy bishies! Always a good thing! XD), the storyline is just w00t, the graphics were first-class, the soundtrack is unforgettable...

But I like FFVIII too. Mainly because it has even more and even yummier bishies. And Selphie! Yes! XD ...No, just kidding. I liked the overall theme and style of FFVIII more that that of VII. Although I have to admit that the music was just a hint poorer, because there were basically two songs that repeated over and over in different ways - in the plotline anyway.

I like Nomura's games overall better than Amano's, that's why IX and <VI don't get my vote. Well, 'cept Kefka. Now there's one crazy peep. O_o

My favorite would be Final Fantasy VI. The Renaissance era look to it, plus the mature storyline paved the way for later Final Fantasies to be even more cinematic than this one... not to say that I love watching an hour's worth of cutscenes without gameplay (*cough* MGS2 *cough*) but seeing Celes as Maria and Locke do his little thing puts a smile to my face.

Hark, I can even recite the entire Aria de Mezzo Caraterre!

"Oh my hero, so far away now..."

Gomenasai!!! ^_^;;;

Finally some people with good taste in FF games. in my opinion 9 and 10 is the best FF out there so far.
I don't really like 8 because the the drawing magic really really killed it for me.
However the reason why i liked 9 and 10 alot was that they actually gave you a charachter with a class.
another reason why i disliked 8 is because using magic felt like i was losing all my hard work getting it up to 100 hundred so i wouldn't use any of my magic unless the enemy has em.

I also love the card game in FF9 i think it was sooo much better then the FF8 card game.

FF9 has a awesome story but very long.

FF9 and Tactics are tied for my fave. I just love the characters so much in 9. Well except for Amarant. All the other characters were rad though. Plus it had a good story and was funny.

And Final Fantasy Tactics was just cool. I thought the storyline got to involved in itself, but the gameplay and customizeability more than made up for that.

There is one FF no one remebers... I t was for SNES umm... called Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest and there were 4 Game Boy FFs (Final Fantasy: Legends 1-3 and Fianl Fantasy: Adventures)

Ranma Saotome
08-02-2003, 12:19 AM
Okay...

The FFs for Gameboy were not Final Fantasy in Japan. 1 - 3 was Saga. FF: A was Seiken Denstsu. You're thinking of Final Fantasy Adventure 2 aka Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 2.

VashTS
08-02-2003, 12:27 AM
Seiken Denstsu was a different game, in the GB FFs you got to chose diffent classes for your characters at the begining (like robot, demon, skeleton, or human)

Ranma Saotome
08-02-2003, 01:06 AM
Those GB games are NOT FF. In the us they are Final Fantasy. In Japan, it is Saga. Technically, it doesn't count.

Hmmm... Which FF is the best? I have to go with FF4. (FF6 had a great story and it was flashier and prettier, but it was also quite depressing at times.)

Oh, and I like FF1 too (if for no other reason than it inspired 8-bit Theatre...)

You know, I have strong opinions.

I was just saying to my friend the other day, "Tom, which of the final fantasy series did you most enjoy?"

I found that Tom, like myself, had a certain opinion that I find among most people like myself. Both of us are journalists, both of us attend the same school, and both of us have written freelance gaming news in our youths, now looking to make something more serious of our endless tomes of gaming knowledge.

I don't want anyone to think that I'm forcing my opinion on anyone, but as a statement of pure, educated fact, Final Fantasy Eight and Ten sucked SO BADLY that it made me want to turn to Dragon Quest.

Now, I'll have you know that I used to swear my hatred for Seven, but in all honesty, I did enjoy Seven to a modest amount. It was certainly better than Eight and Ten.

I'm sorry, but any game that focuses on a character who has no character is destined for hatred by me. That and I hate Squall.

FFX, no world map, need I say more? "Lets make a game where you WALK ALL THE WAY AROUND THE EARTH TWICE". Great design idea, guys.

FFVI represents the pinnacle in role playing games for myself and most hardcore gamers of drinking age, I think. You're talking about like 20 characters, and each one has an extensively long story with tons of details, sidequests and secrets for EVERY SINGLE ONE, some are related, some aren't, but there's a sidequest to explain EVERYTHING. HUNDREDS of spells, and probably the single most mature and well-developed story of any Role Playing Game ever.

Please, challenge me on it, I love for nothing more than to talk about FFVI.

The difference between FFVII and FFVI was like the difference between a good movie and a good book. A good movie has you talking for a long time, but a good book has you coming back time and time again, and adds to your life experience.

The difference between FFVI and FFVIII and FFX was like the difference between a good book and a pile of rancid vomit.

Okay, it wasn't that bad. I did enjoy Laguna's storyline in VII, and I thought the Magus sisters and Auron's tale were a nice twist in X.

For the record, I did enjoy Nine. The store was one of the best developed, with the most fluid characters I've seen since the SNES. (That's Super Nintendo for you youngsters {Kidding, kidding})

But like I said, don't let my super-sure-of-myself personality dissuade any of you from arguing it with me, I really love to debate this topic, all in good fun of course. A little name calling can't hurt, after all. ;)

I don't care what any of you say, that game was great. if someone made that into a hand-held game, I'd buy it RIGHT NOW.

I have a gift. I was born with the uncanny ability to say something that will inevitably make me very unpopular.

And the inability to stop myself from saying it.

My favourite is Final Fantasy X, followed immediately by VII, then I.

It's not just because of the graphics. I really loved X's storyline and ADORED the characters, especially the little incidental ones like Rin and Ma...Ma...uh...The Guy Who Was Voiced By Dwight Schultz. "And that, as they say, is that." Him. His name escapes me, which is really embarassing. Plus X made me cry. VII made me sad, but X made me cry.

DAMN YOU NOBUO!

That being said, I admit, I like Sephiroth more than the heroes of FFVII, but I cannot for the life of me understand people who want to see Sephiroth and Aeris hook up.

Sephiroth: You're alive.

Aeris: Yes. You missed every vital organ somehow.

Sephiroth: I did it...for you.

Aeris: Oh Sephiroth

Sephiroth: Oh Aeris.

Bezo: Oh stuff it.

Auron: *grunts* Stop wasting time.

Bezo: Sorry.

FFVII was the first one I ever played, and I think I can safely say it will always be my favorite..

Lol, Bezo, though. I don't understand Aer/Seph either. O_o; I do think Hojo wanted to make out with Ifalna, though...

Final Fantasy was the first one I ever played. Albeit, I had no idea what it was at the time. I was very young. :D

I seem to recall something about not liking the fact that it wasn't Mega Man. I was very fond of Mega Man at the time, especially Mega Man 2 with it's awesome Dr. Wily level music.
