View Full Version : Your own J-rock costume...

If you could make up a J-rock costume specifiaclly just for you, what would it look like? Would it have lots of ruffles and lace? Fishnet and leather? Would it be black, white, or whatever? Would have any cool patterns or icons on it??? ^^

Mana

mine would be a cross. It'd be doll like, with lots of pretty ribbons, lace and silky bows, but then I'd wear big, spiky collars and cuffs :) I'd keep the nice platform Mary Janes though ^^

Koumori
01-20-2003, 01:32 PM
Sleek and smooth, with elements of world fashion - Chinese, maybe, or Indian. With leather. And rivets. And lots of buckles. And blue hair. And all kinds of materials that would be impossible for some American chick trying to reproduce my costume in a couple of years to find. Or maybe that last part was just my personal issue. ;)

Cyber Wolf
01-20-2003, 01:36 PM
I definetly agree with that last part. I'd like to see the boggled looks on their faces *smirk*

Mine would be a dress, sorta puffy with lacy sleeves and Mandarin-style collar. I'd have a little silver lizard on the front and platforms as well as grey tights. And I'd have my hair over my eyes sorta Klaha style ^^

full lenghth black satin skirt with a ball gown puff and a black corset with folds and it! black point shoes with fisnet tights and black roses on my hair. For jewlry silver rings and an silver egyptian necklace

Bows, lace, frills, short circle skirt, great makeup...

Maybe I'll draw it one day.

Great topic idea!

Thanks ^^ And know that you mention it, I should probably draw this thingie...*skritch sketch* ^^

I'd say, lots of thin layers, transluscent and dark metallicy materials. Something comfy to wear, but dangerous looking. Definently extra appendages. Probably green hair.

that'd be a good con event. Invent your own j-rocker and all. Besides, 80-90% of the con wouldn't know if you were an "original" j-rocker or a real one anyway. You could probably trick a lot of people: "Oh, yeah, I'm from that new indies band." ^_-

Cyber Wolf
01-21-2003, 08:09 PM
Hmm......

"Yes that new indies band, (couple of Japanese words here)."
"Wow....:o"

XD, that should definetly take place. But I hope AX doesn't use it or something cause I can't go to Cali! @_@

Okay. As I was falling asleep last night, I was seriously thinking over this. ;) Chinese-style top with short sleeves, asymmetrical closure, in black PVC, with insets of grommets, rivets, and mesh throughout. A little bit of stomach between the top and the skirt.. as for that.. asymmetrical PVC overskirt with the same sort of insets, but differently shaped (maybe just long straight lines of them on the skirt), buckled over one hip, with an underskirt of ripped-up mesh and gauze in blue and black. And boots. Oh, yes. The boots. Now I'm wondering if I couldn't actually make such a thing.

Cyber Wolf
01-21-2003, 08:55 PM
Yes, but first, sketch it and put it on this thread : D

It does sound like an AX thing. They tried to do a plushie contest last year, but no one knew about it. (I'll have plushies this year, tho.)

Japanese words...what are you talking about? I thought it had to be French? ^_^* Like "Belle Décapitation" or "Tasse d'angst Noir" or "Rire Infini de Rose et de Sang"...well that one's a bit long. That could be one of the songs, then. Of course, you gotta pronounce it with a Japanese accent.

Dude, I'm up for it. Gonna go draw now.

mine would be very mad hatter like :D

black trench with numerous buckels and japanese ethnic patterns towards the buttom done in blue. A top hat with a blue band and a big blue X on the top of the hat. i would have black pilot gloves (think Cid Highwind) my undershirt would be kinda plain, with a buckel around my coller.

im really into the black and blue them, i love Toshiya

Snow days...blah. You kids are making me feel old.

Um, anyway, I drew two two quick lil' sketches (yes, to me they are sketches -- please don't hit) on the back of envelopes while I was stuck working a really boring estate sale today. I only had whatever random markers I happened to be carrying in my purse, so the color scheme is a bit brighter than it'd actually be. Um, I have no idea what I was going for. Simply to not inadvertantly rip off Kami or Kaoru, I guess. The two requirements I gave myself was wearing my normal boots and not having to do anything different to my hair. I think the designs ended up being somewhat PLC-ish. Or maybe just looking like an RPG character. Oh well, nothing wrong with that...

Since I never feel confident that my drawings can ever be readable, I guess I'll explain them...
The first one involves a fun lil' halo headpiece thingie that spills onto the bare left shoulder which is a tangle of tubing and wire which forms into the kimono sleeve. I'm thinking those tiny self-contained LEDs might be put to good use on the arm somewhere, too. The rest of the outfit would be made of a layer of metallic gauze covering a base of pleather. The dragon would probably be painted on a different fabric and sewn on. And I get a claw, too, somehow.

http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=20513&papass=&sort=1&thecat=3130

The second one is an excuse to use peacock feathers. ^_^ And eyelets. I love pounding those things in. Um, mostly it'd be a tight metallic or wet-looking pleather skirt, but the jacket would be light-weight and translucent. Some standard spiky gauntlets and striped knee-highs. The end.

http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=20514&papass=&sort=1&thecat=3130

I suppose the scariest thing about designing something plausible is that now I'm tempted to actually make one of them. Ack.

Yui
01-25-2003, 04:08 PM
Ack. I asked my sister which one she liked better, and she just said I shouldn't do either cuz they both look like a guy X_x I thought that was the point. Not like I look like a girl anyway.

Um, anyway I remembered I had these fun pics to help inspire everyone. These are the actual Le Ciel production sketches. And they are very silly...

Okay. Bear in mind that I can't draw. The top and the solid area of the skirt are all really shiny black PVC. There's a long glove and a short glove. And all of the little lines of dots are inset grommet tape.

01-26-2003, 05:29 PM
Ah, innovative : D Nice sketch ^^

01-30-2003, 08:51 PM
whee. I'm suddenly inspired to go find an instrument and figure out how to make something vaguely musical now that I've got the costuming down.

Hmm...this seems somehow backwards thinking.

btw, camuimana: I really worship your sig (as long as we're all complimenting each other anyway)....but you're avatar is depressing. Sigh.

01-31-2003, 08:24 PM
Mine would be something between the more sleek, GLAY-ish styles and something still girly and a wee bit lolita-inspired. It'd probably be some kind of simple dress with really kickin, unique knee-boots and a lacy undershirt that just peeks out from under a chunky zipper. Actually, make that four or five zippers. Hmmm. The hair, of course, would have to be part black and part orange and very gravity-defying (though not very spiked, per say). Lots of makeup and maybe a strand of tacky pearls plus a skull ring. Woo!

Seiya Yagami
02-01-2003, 12:40 PM
Anything involving long leather coat ^^

Cyber Wolf
02-01-2003, 12:47 PM
Yesh, leather coats are so cool! And zippers too ;)

Yui
02-01-2003, 03:50 PM
Lots and lots of zippers. Yeah.
The best thing maybe would to be just go shopping first for weird fabric or boots or something distinctive like that, and just build around it.
I just had some fun on eBay - gives you an excuse to get some really weird-colored fishnets or random assortments of feathers that you could never match to a real costume before. ^_^

Cyber Wolf
02-01-2003, 03:53 PM

Yui
02-02-2003, 06:57 PM
Hmm. Okay, I can't sing, so I won't contest anyone there...I can make fun, garbled vocal effects, but that's about it. Well, anyway drums would be my call. (Let's see...so far I have...sticks! Well, Lilli, -you- got my sticks. But now I gotta go get the bulky, loud portion. ::sneaks into Poli's basement and swipes poor neglected drumset::
Or maybe a kazoo, or a zither. I just wanna play (or pretend to play) something with a z in it. It's a weird kind of calling.

Quick, someone pick random French words and spell them incorrectly!

Cyber Wolf
02-02-2003, 07:16 PM

Hmm...I somehow think she wouldn't assist us in mucking up the language. (Even tho it's all in good fun.) I wonder what the equivilant term of engrish would be for muddled French.

Right now, I'm looking at the nonsensical French phrases my friend sends me. I like "couche collante" (sticky layer) even tho it isn't really goth, but just because it sounds cool pronounced with a Japanese accent. O_o*
Course, we could always throw some German in randomly, too. It's an all-out, unbaised attack on all major languages of the world. Sprache mélangée!

Cyber Wolf

I've been dressing like what you guys describe for years. Really its all just goth, cyber and industrial. Japanese goth. I'm a BIG fan of Malice Mizer, its suprising that they're so ultra popular in Japan, seeing how goth here in the States is not. So anyways, get your J-rock goth clothes together and start coming out to the goth clubs. DJ's like myself really miss new blood in the scene.

haha, I have a feeling j-rockers would get mauled at goth clubs. X_x That's okay...tiny shy naive chicks can pretend to be all badass at cons, but would probably melt around real 'professionals.'

Yeah to varying degress, I dressed like that at school and now a bit more at work and really whenever I'm out. Nobody gets it, tho. I still get little old grandmas telling me how cute and stylish I am. I just want a happy medium between glomping and startlement. Like confusion. I like confusing people.

Well for one goth clubs are TITE. Everybody dresses up, the music is good, at least i think so otherwise i wouldn't be a DJ. Mostly, i go out to goth clubs to hang out, meet new people, dance, and drink. You'd be suprised how many goth people are into cosplay, and vice versa. If you like Malice Mizer and any of the real goth type J-rock bands you'd probably enjoy yourself at a goth club. Alot of well dressed hot chicks and androdynous guys tend to populate them. I think J-rock is alot like goth and EBM music myself. I even used to play Malice Mizer and Dir en Grey on my old club night.

Did you say androgynus guys? I'm there!.... in another 3 or 6 years ^^;;; *currently 15* ^^

Yui
02-21-2003, 08:47 PM
nah....not putting their existance down or anything but still no good for me as I don't dance, I definitely don't drink, and I'm a terrible socializer. And if I'm listening to music, I'm -listening- to music, no distractions. It's a very personal experience for me, and I don't like sharing it (which is why I loathe concerts, I suppose.)
Now, androgynus guys...there's almost an incentive, but I'd just feel bad wasting their time. X_x
Hmm, so unless there's a goth club where you can paint on the floor or play Guilty Gear or something along those lines...sigh. Yeah, I'm hopelessly con-only material here.

But very cool of you to use your omnipotent DJ powers to educate the house.

Mmm... Gothy people are complex... and yes, it is quite surprising how many of them dabble in Anime and Cosplay... in fact most people I meet at the club I attend usually know Malice Mizer... and yes... the men are hot hot hot!! ^_^ Sorry, couldn't leave that out, now could I? But being a sociaphobe myself... it tends to get a lil overwhelming... but then again, so do cons for me.... but anyway... I've dressed this way since I could pick out my own clothes... so has most of my family... and I love making people confused as well!! And once, when I went to OhayoCon 2002, I was dressed as my usual self and even had some pictures taken!! Scary!!! Anyway.. that's my two cents.... booyah!

Hello all!

I used to go to Club One, a goth club in Savannah, but only to see the silly gothic people watching themselves dance in the mirror....they would just stand in front of the full-length mirror wall and watch themselves dance alone! Does anyone else see this happen at clubs, or is it just me? Either way, it's very funny to watch (and I like to dance as well!). I made this outfit a long time ago to wear to that same club:

www.sadwonderland.com/gothwindow.jpg

What amuses me is that I did once make my own personal Jrock costume and called myself Akia, of Resiel...at the convention I wore it to (AWA 2001), many people either thought I was from Angel Sanctuary, or else blustered their way through by pretending to know what I was. One girl (who incorrectly corrected me on how to pronounce "Malice Mizer") told me that, while she'd never listend to "Resiel's" music, she did know who I was and what band I was from. The nerve of some people!

I also almost got into the cosplay in my fake Jrock costume, but felt badly and backed out a tthe last moment...the only time I haven't participated in the masquerade at a convention.

Here's a picture of Akia, from a girl's site who labelled it "Cool (unknown) jrocker):

There's a lot of awesome Yura's to choose from...it be cool to get a bunch of people willing to be him at the same time (and then we could effectively make an impenatrable wall/fire hazard ^_-)
Yeah, with the lolita contest at AX, my new designs are leaning toward some kind of big Yura-ish backpiece as well as a few very Miyabi-ish touches...so odd that you'd bring them both up. O_o

As far as a panel...it would be cool, but what would the people running it actually do? Draw/sew or just talk?

My friend has been making her own jrock costume. I helped her design but would not dare go to a sewing machine. I will just mess up her outfit. I don't know what she is doing but soo far I think the first piece she did was the shirt. hehe. I'm just doing the hair for her.

How are you guys gonna do your hair?

Cyber Wolf
04-13-2003, 10:23 AM
I think I'll go for a wig, probably green, and have it bobbed in the front but long in the back. Bangs would cover the right side of my face. Yep, either green, red, or white ^^ How about you? :3

ambitiousmiyavi
04-13-2003, 11:54 AM
Well I can't do anything to my hair now cause its too curly, I have to straighten it. But gonna do my friends hair the Kaoru hair (mohawk style, my hair is to long for that), some miyavi style, it has braiding and extensions and some other jrock inspired hair styles. My hair is gonna be black and red with two strands of blond somewhere. Don't wanna use a wig, so gonna use my hair.

The hair is the easiest part. Now to the costume....
