I know I posted a role call for DragonCon a while back, but I figure it's closer to time now.

Who's going? What are you going as?

My husband, some friends/in-laws and I are going. We'll have a Brak Show (I'll be "Mom")group for sure. I'll be doing Dawn(Dawn), Jenny Sparks (The Authority), Eowyn from TTT, Magdalena (The Magdalena), and Seras Victoria (Hellsing).

I am planning on going, and now sounds like Ken may be coming with me. Still up in air what all I will wear, as got a list of costumes I want to get done between now and then. But, if Ken is willing to be a victim again - probably might do Li and Sakura one day.

No way I'm missing it! For sure I'm doing another Amidala, Susan, Husk and Teela. I'm wearing Amalthea, Arwen and Eowyn again, and I may wear Buffy again since my friend wants to do Drusilla.

I definitely won't miss this convention again. I had my doubts but now that I've been to one, I know what to expect. ^_^

Eeeeh! I can't wait to meet you guys!

Huongstar: I think I might know you from a message board a couple years back. It'll be cool to meet you at D*C!

Really? I used to be a posting maniac at so many different forums! ^_^;; I hope we can meet somewhere at D*C. The convention is so huge and there is always so many people!

I'm going for sure. I havent missed Dragon con since 96, so I'll be there. Im not sure who Im going as. I have a couple of ideas but I have to work out which one is the most financialy feasible. If I have enough money and time I will try and make more than one costume, but right now all I have planned is one. College is draining my funds at the moment.

Im hoping I see more cosplayers this year. D*C 2002 didnt have that many that I saw. Maybe I was looking in the wrong places. We'll still have to organize a Cosplay.com gathering. That would be sweet. Hey, maybe we should march in the parade this year. That would be hilarious!

Hikaruchan

DragonCon had a decent amount of anime cosplayers this past year (got 2 pages of pics). Much more then the last time I went in 1998, when there was only a handful. So hopefully the trend will continue.

If Ken does go, I so want to make a Fuuma costume for him. He more wants to do D or Sesshoumaru, but his build/look just fits Fuuma. If I can do that, I would probably crossplay Kamui for a few pics before we wander off in seperate directions.

DC 02 was my first and what a one to start out on. So many others pale in comparison to this convention. It seems like from Thursday till Monday there was non stop action! Anyway I am going as a Biker Scout this year as well as Destro from the 80s cartoon G.I Joe.

Trying desperately to get myself there. There's this little thing called the Pacific ocean between me and the US though;)

If I do go, I'll be lugging along my Black Diamonds (http://recital.tripod.com/costume/blackdiamonds.htm) , Pink Diamonds (http://recital.tripod.com/costume/pdiamonds.htm) , Eowyn 'White Wool' (http://recital.tripod.com/costume/eowyn.htm), a Dawn costume (not the one I'm parcticing with which is in progress at my site) and an entry for the Masquerade.. which I'm being pulled in all sorts of directions with.. so many I'd like to do;) And if I still have room in luggage (an I'm not stopped at customs and fined or whatever as Cons and costumes suggest you are trying to import and sell something.. sigh) probably another LotR or a Star wars costume maybe...

How to fund my trip, that is the question;)

Ah I'd NEVER miss D*C ^^ It's heaven on earth. Not a moment has gone by at DC where I haven't enjoyed myself.

Dunno what I'm going as but we'll find out I suppose ^^ Maybe something from Velvet Goldmine.

We should have a cosplay.com photoshoot there; in all of our crazy costumes. *cackles*

I'm making Drucilla from BtVS! And I decided this BEFORE I learned that James Marsters would be there. I'm going to go up to him and make him talk British to me *laugh*

A cosplay.com photoshoot would be great - just would have to figure a spot that wouldn't be too crowded to meet at.

There are some rooms in the Marriott that are always empty. Sometimes it is empty cause the event being held inside is done, or sometimes they are not being used at all. I'm sure we will find a place.

I would actually like to get a pic of everyone out of costume too. We could do that on Thursday before or after registration.

CandyElly
02-24-2003, 02:59 PM
The Marriott is the most logical place to to do it. It's the least crowded in the lobby. Everyone there is already in the dealers room or art room. ^^ And theres always the main lobby in the Hyatt. Which is always crowded to hell but it's where EVERYONE takes pictures ^^

Hikaruchan

What is going on Thursday at DragonCon? If not much, don't know if I will be there til Friday - as I probably will be sharing a room with other Anime Nashville members who won't want to come down til things are going full swing. Slight probability I could crash with some volunteers like I did last year though.

CandyElly

Yeah, its always crowded there. Especially if a big event like the masquerade just let out. The Marriott would be better for photos

What is going on Thursday at DragonCon?

Registration. Thats about it. The con dosent start till Friday morning.

Okay... anyone who went last year... there were dances, right?

Anyone have a description of what they were like? (Music, clothes, # of people, etc.) And does anyone know if they're gonna have them again?

Miroku
03-15-2003, 02:11 AM
Yeah, there are dances every year. Im sure you can go in casual clothes. The type of music they play varies. As for number of people, it just depends on when you go. Sometimes you can catch a good number of people in the rooms set up for dances. And people are actually dancing! Other times its just a bunch of drooling fanboys hudled in the back of the room, and their glasses glint in the light as they peek up to leer at the only girl in the room as she walks in. So find where the dances are, and take a look into the room before you go in. Hopefully you'll find one at the right place and time.

Usually there is an 80s dance and then concerts like the Misfits and Gwar. There is also the drum circle which is my personal favourite ^_^ There was a mini rave last year that we all ended up getting drunk at and playing with glowsticks...

What do people wear? Absolutely everything. No matter what you put on, you won't stand out. There is a lot of goth, but a lot of EVERYTHING. I was running around as a lil neon fuzzy thing ^^; I was probably one of the brightest things at the con *lol*

I may go to D*C, but just for one day with a friend of mine. If so I am either going to wear my Empress (princess wars RPG) costume or Kurumi. I haven't figured out which.

Pasties or tape seemed to be seen quite a bit last year in the halls. Didn't bother me, but I think it would bother my sister. Doesn't seem to be her type of crowd - don't know how exactly to convey the atmosphere to her without alarming my mother that I am there.

Yeah, electrical tape, or just tape in general (along with other odd things) seems to be a costume for some people.

Well, I probably only have enough to go to one con this fall, especially since D*C and AWA are so close together (I think) So I'll probably go with D*C. I doubt anyone would think you were wearing it too much. C'mon,....please? That would be so nice of you to bring that costume along.

03-26-2003, 10:33 AM
^^ I honestly don't think some of the people who wear little more than ductape/electrical tape view themselves as wearing a whole costume. Aside from very serious pro costumers, Dragoncon is full of exhibitionists, fetish lovers, goths and others who simply enjoy being outragous, showing off their bodies and their style. Be it for themselves or for the sake of shocking the audience. It's also a prime event for porn stars, pin-up models, car models, actors etc. Not everyone dressed up is a costumer. Also, if you don't have the time or money to construct or commission a full costume, why not put something attention-grabbing together for one weekend out of the year? For the period of a couple of days out of 365, go be different, be sexy, be crazy!! ^_^
Dragoncon is the party con of the sci-fi scene, people come to enjoy themselves, party, chat, meet and hook-up. And to not have to worry about what society thinks of you.
That's the beauty of Dragoncon.

Carmila
03-26-2003, 10:59 AM
I have heard of the "fishnet and duct tape" costumers at D*C and honestly, that is why I have been a bit afraid to go. Who knows, going with my friends this year may change my mind!

The Metric Ruler
03-27-2003, 10:48 AM
Yeah, a lot of peeps use Dragon*con as an excuse to wear some seriously "questionable" stuff and I'm not talking about costumes. Aside from all the slutty stuff, you will see some amazing costumes. I'm sure you'll have a great time, Carmila.

Hey, I'm sure it's all fun and games at the con but if you know your parents would be ashamed, maybe it's time to rethink the fetish gear! ;)

I'm amazed my dad was so cool and calm about the whole thing. He was there with us, saw all the weirdness... but didn't say anything. Just sort of ignored it. My dad is neat ^^
ON the other hand... my mom wants to go with us this year... and that's a whole different story. I want my dad to go with us again ^^;

Hikaruchan
03-27-2003, 11:29 AM
Well Kell, if she goes to the Pern track like you mentioned she was interested in - when I was in that part of the con it was fairly tame down in the basement where that was. So hopefully she will miss some of the weirder stuff if she gets involved with the track programming.

Miroku
03-27-2003, 11:54 AM
Yeah, Dragoncon is full of "expressive" people, but usually if you leave them alone they will leave you alone, and if you are nice to them, they will be nice to you. And everyone is happy!

Kell, I cant imagine bringing my parents with me to Dragoncon. They would just not fit in at all. You must be close with your parents.

In my two years of going, I have never encountered anyone rude or threatening. Usually the people who were dressed up the most outragously are the nicest and most polite ones you'll encounter. No matter what you look like, everyone gets accepted and everyone is friendly to each other, with minor exceptions of course. The con-experience can be so different for everyone... the game fans hang in gaming rooms all weekend, the tv show fans go to panels of their fav. actors, the amateur film makers show off their work, and the costumers enter contests and generally hang out. I personally attend the con to costume, and to be with out of town friends and other costumers.
At any rate, I do lok forward to seeing everyone there this year ^_^

Wee, I just made room reservation at Marriott. Using my AAA discount got a better rate than the con rate.
