Ok, We all know how much most anime otaku's LOVE cats, err, neko's.
So i was thinking, there are a lot of kittens and cats at the SPCA's, and they always need support for taking care of them.
Also, here in hamilton we have a program called animal welfare for cats. Its a shelter run by 2 people who take in homeless cats and care for them until they find homes.

Since there are SO many people at the conventions, i was thinking it would be a good idea if all neko lovers unite and create a chairty donation for the SPCA and Animal Welfare at CNAnime to help them out. i can see what I can do about getting a donation box from the spca if possible, and if not I can make one.
anyway, who's in for this? I cant exactly do this on my own, tho i feel a need to help those homeless cats in shelters. Anyone at anime north this year will know, i'm the one who bought midnight (our homeless black cat at the convention) the canned food all weekend and tried to find him a home. unfortunately he died getting hit by a car, and to prevent another life being taken like that, please join in and help me support the shelters.

Ohh also, if possible on the sunday, if we can get a group of people who helped out with this together, maybe we can all go to the spca or shelter and drop off the donations. this would be great to do in our neko costumes if you have one (i do! lol)

I think i'll call it... "Anime for Animals" or something.
Any suggestions/opinions/questions?

awww.. I remember that black kitty, so sad that it died :(

now, back on topic, as much as I'd LOVE to help the little kitties I don't think this would work in a con setting. Who would handle the money? It seems that carrying around a box full of money isn't really safe in T.O. If you'd like thou you can promote the cause at CNanime and gave info (a website or address people can donate to) I think making people aware is better than just asking for money anyways! :P

I'm a big fan of the fluffy kitties--My family and I took in a kitten that was found at a trucking company (a family memeber's work). After the the vet gave the OKAY he was ours!!. Here is a picture (http://mokulen22.tripod.com/photo/index.album?i=18) of his VERY fat arse.

Update: changed picture to a link now. *cross fingers* this should work

It's a good idea, I'm not sure if it'd do well though.
You should contact the staff first, because requesting anything is against the rules (including you people wearing the stupid signs).
I'll be Sailor Luna at some point during the weekend...

Hmm. Carrying a money box around TO isnt good i guess. but i in no way object to trying to promote the spca or animal welfare. maybe i can find some other way to help out, now that i think about it. maybe organizing a lunch or something with everyone in their neko costumes coming together, then making signs promoting the SPCA and stuff and going to the restaurant. It gets the idea out to the general public, instead of just in a convention setting.

Or maybe we can take the second half of my idea and make it possible. maybe not gathering donations AT the con, but gathering people who are willing to make donations at the con if possible, and going together in a group to each donate money in our neko costumes?
i'm saving every penny i get right now for the convention just to pay my admissions and transit and accomodation, but if i have any extra, and this goes through, i have no problem making a donation to help the needy kittens and neko's in the world, after all, i have two of them that are mine now that i've given homes to. i would never let them go to a shelter.

I'm into Bunnies personally, But I used to volunteer at a cat shelter after school back when I was in high school.
Hmm... The one thing that I don't like about your idea, is that it's only directed towards cats. Nekos are all kindsa animal/people. And all kindsa animals need help.
Right before going off to college, I spent a year in the forest working as a volunteer for a charitable organization called WildCare, who rehabilitated all kinds of sick, injured or abandoned wildlife.
Turtles, squirrels, raccoons, fox, skunks, dear, coyote, hawks, falcons, owls, opossums, snakes, mice, doves, gulls, herons, bunnies, geese any many other animals who were brought to us with desperate need of aid.
I think it's a noble idea to want to raise money to help out animals, but I think that if you were really serious about doing it, it would be much more beneficial to try and help out more than just one species - especially since Nekos aren't just cats alone.
My first cosplay was Meroko, and she's a Bunny/girl

Just my 2 cents :)

Well isnt that nice! wonderful job on the volunteering there.
You've now opened my eyes to a new perspective. Ok, maybe its better to help ALL the animals, why not? The only reason i figured cats only was because thats the most common animal cosplay at cons it seems. but for once, why doesnt someone dress up as a dog? i know my one friend i saw at anime north dressed up as a dog/wolf, and closest thing to that seems to be inuyasha lol.
I wonder how i can volunteer at the shelters, the spca is to far from me here by bus to access, it'd take me 2 hrs on bus and a 1 hr walk to get there lol. but i wonder if theres any other place available.

Yes. neko is Japanese means Cat. which is why you see all the anime cats like kami-neko, kuro-neko and other cat characters with neko on the end of their names. Kami neko means god-cat (he's the grey biting cat from azumanga daioh) and kuro-neko means black-cat (obviously known from trigun).

other animals have other names in japanese, i believe dog is Inu. and stuff like that. but neko strictly means cat.

although i have no objections to other animals, just clearing up the point that neko does strickly refer to cats.
