View Full Version : *Mapping out Storm from X-MEN*

Hello! I want to make a Storm from X-MEN costume for a con next year and need a little advice.
Now I've only made two costumes from scratch, those costumes were fairly difficult. This here is a challenge. I'm no where near seamstress level, but I do try my best. I would love all inputs on what material is best for the costume, etc.? Is there a body suit I can alter? How do you make/attach the boots?
Ahhh! So many questions!! Sorry... -____-
I want this to be as easy as possible but have it look well done too. Suggestions?

I was always partial to Ororo's black thigh-high boots outfit with the lockpick "crown" in her hair...
This particular outfit looked metallic silver to me, so I'd probably use silver lycra for it.
They have instructions on how to draft your own catsuit pattern, and links with info on various commercial patterns.
Alternately, you could probably purchase a silver catsuit from a dance supply company.
For the boots, you can either buy thigh-highs ($$ and won't look quite the same) or you can follow one of the many boot cover tutorials out there.
Sarcasm-hime has one here: http://sarcasm-hime.net/bootcovers-tutorial.html
Lynleigh has one here: http://www.lynleigh.com/cosplay
To get the boot covers to stay up, I would sew them right onto the thighs of the catsuit (which, as a result, will only really need to come down to your knees or so like a pair of shorts). I did that to keep a pair of thigh high stockings up and it worked really well - took out the elastic at the top and zig-zagged them onto a pair of flesh-toned shaper shorts.
Hope this helps. I love Storm!

Always happy to help!
Oh, one other thing...
If you DO make this all as one piece, you will probably want to make sure the catsuit has a zipper up the back - otherwise it will be next to impossible to pour yourself into it.
I saw some PERFECT metallic silver lycra at JoAnns the other day. It looked like liquid silver.
And the hair? Please, for the love of Bob, don't wear the super-straight wig that Halle Berry wore in the movies. :(
Are you going to do contacts?

Yes, I think I found a rather nice unitard that I think will purchase w/ zipper in the back. lol! It will be a metallic/silver color.
Ah, no way!! Storm has thick, wavy type hair. The thought to buy a straight wig never entered my mind. I know, that wig that H.B. wore was horrible! lol! I also found some nice wigs, I just have to make a deicsion.
I'm basing this costume off of the comicbook version. I want to get contacts but will be the last thing I'll get for the costume. I was hoping to get it here:
What do you think? Thanks! =D

Only time I bought coloured contacts was from an eyeglass place.
You'll need to get an eye exam to be measured for contacts even if you (especially if you) don't usually wear contacts. Some places online will not sell to you unless you have had a recent eye exam. There are a couple threads floating around about contact lenses with lots of good info and sites for buying them.
I think it'll be hard finding full scleral white contacts that do not make you blind. In the comics, she is shown with piercing blue eyes when she's not in full-on mutant mode. I don't know what colour your eyes are. If they are dark, you can look into the theatrical lenses like the Angelic style (under Immortal eyes on cosplaylabs). If your eyes are light already, you are VERY lucky and can get away with regular coloured contact lenses that you can get from your local Lenscrafter, Eyeland, or other optometrist.

Ohh! Good advice, thanks! I already wear contacts, I just need a recent eye exam! =D I might go for the piercing blue eyes, I'm tight on money. =/
