Just a few things I'm curious about.

Has anyone here heard anything about the panels at Con No Baka? Is anyone involved.

Does anyone have any idea who's judging the cosplay?

Does anyone know if there will be Divisions in the cosplay or is it just a free for all like hall cosplay?

Is anyone doing the "Hour Long Skit" portion of the convention?

Anyone hosting a room party?

What is everyone hoping to get out of this con?

Looking forward to hearing from some of you.

Cheers!

~Dawn :)

So far I have no clues what's going on at Con No Baka, but if my idea pass out about the Live Cosplay Chess Battle, that may be the Hour Skit unless they have to place that event somewhere ells. About the room party, I may use that as a place to gather everyone who's interested at my idea and sign up those who are interested. I already send an e-mail so now I'm waiting.

Room parties are held in a room at the hotel you rent. You rent the room and you host the party. Are you hosting a room party? Have you ever been to one before?

Good luck with the chess.

I also have no information on CnB events. I know the people running it are out there. Because I've seen them in contact with some of the people I know. However I know of nothing finalized. Or if there is going to be any judging for cosplay....

Well I can't really answer any of your questions besides the last one. What do I hope to get out of this? Well I'm going in with a certain mentality and that is this con will be slow with very little events, but I've never been one to go to con's events before (besides the AN Masquerade and the Saturday Night Dance). I'm going for the social event. I want to hang out with friends, meet new ones, and basically goof around with people of like-minds. I'm probably not even going to buy anything. I just was to hang around!

I've got a question O_O

Did anyone else do pre-registration?
Because I sent it in a while ago via Expedited Mail as well, so it should've gotten to them ages ago!
I haven't heard from them -at all- regarding confirmation.

I emailed them a couple of days ago, and nada. -_-;

I have a table in the artist alley. my friends and I have also got a nice room at the double tree, that might be used for general hanging out/room party if the music at their dances suck (as par usual, never learned the para para myself^^;)

I have e-mailed them several times about their cosplay events and never got a response. I will be surprised if they even have anyone to give out hall costume awards yet. And awards meaning they will probably post up a list of "winners and honorable mentions" somewhere. *shrugs*

I go to cons to cosplay with my friends. I don't go to be in or even watch the masq. Official con events rarely interest me and I find panels just rehash the same old stuff. I like to learn things on my own anyways.

I really want to do a photoshoot for Hellsing cosplayers on the Saturday, but as it stands I am coming up very short of volunteers. We don't even have an Alucard! And after I finally got a good camera too!! *pout*

I don't know how sucsessful this con will be for me, but I'd still rather go to it than the hobbystar one day dealers room in Dec.

I am planning to enter the AMV contest. I had emailed them and got a response a week or two later concerning it. So, yes they do try to email responses, its just that they're busy (we all have busy lives ^^). Hopefully they get back to you Heki_Chan.

Okay update. The conchair was kind enough to answer my email. One of the judges is Derwin Mak. The other(s) are "to be announced".

My friends and I are currently debating weather to stay for the weekend at a hotel for Con no baka. We are all a tad reluctant however curiousity is getting the best of most of us. Anyways..my question is.
Can you purchase a one day ticket? Or do you have to pay the full 45$ and buy the three day ticket? One more thing..I've heard talk of a dance that they are hosting. Is it true? And if so are they having it at the Double Tree where the rest of the con is?
I'm so confused over this whole convention..*sigh*

Yes, they do have a one day pass. At least that was announced on the thread above. Not sure of the prices yet. That made me much happier.

They do show on their site that they are having a dance Friday and Saturday night. That seems interesting. The dance is to be held in the Plaza foyer.

Personally I never saw the point of pre-registering. I prefer to pay up front. Its easy, theres no hassle, and I don't have to worry about wether or not its been confirmed. Paying 10bucks extra doesn't phase me at all.

Well i can't hang out with my cosplay friends unless we all meet at a hotel since we all live very far away from eachother. It's gonna cost us money either way and I'd rather use the excuse of a con and have the chance to make even more friends. :)

Dance? Both nights? Seems intresting, tempting even. Were still undecided though..45$ at the door! That kinda turned us off.

Half of my meathead friends don't cosplay.........bleah....so I go to cons to cosplay and then most anime/cosplay fans are to spooked to talk to me because I look mean! Hahahahhaha.

Hi!

I just have a question to ask people who live in the Toronto area, and might know a little more. I live in Fredericton, NB, and I usually go to Toronto twice a year to go to Anime North and CNanime. This year, I'm actually making more money than I did previous years, so I'm toying with the idea of attending a convention in late november or early december. It's also my birthday the first week of decemeber, so that would help as well. I'm just wondering, is it worthwhile for me to fly across the country and spend several nights in a hotel for this con? It's not really a money issue, it's probably going to cost about $500, but that's not the real question. I've been looking at Con no baka stuff, and I just haven't been able to figure out exactly how big it's probably going to be. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to go to another con this year, but I want it to be worthwhile if I spend that much time to go, and probably make a new costume for it.

Any suggestions people? Is this one worth going to, or are there any other con is the Toronto area around that time that would be larger? I'm not specifically looking for anime conventions, I also like sci-fi, comic book and gaming conventions, but I do love anime!! PM me if you'd like.

Well....it's new (this year!), and....it is going to be something different, that's for sure ^^

It's all in the hotel, which is cool. Means you don't have to cross a street or go far for costumes changes (if you bring more then one). Everything is within easy walking distance (if you don't like to walk much), and I know for a fact that there is several restuarants nearby if you don't want to eat inside the hotel (there is a Tim Hortons and a Harveys right across the street, for those on super budgets like me ^^).

It probably won't be big (not like Anime North or CNanime), but it looks to be fairly large. If it goes well this year, most likely it will grow over the next few years into Anime North sized convention.

Now, if you are looking for more info, I'd say the site is best place to look. As for getting information out of those who are running it, good luck with that. Not saying they aren't ontop of emails..well, they aren't. Could be a million reasons why, but it is hard to get a response back from them, especially in these final few weeks before the con. No biggie, I guess, but that is just me being a pain in the arse about it :P

As for other conventions....hrm...if you really want to go all out, I suggest Otakon in Baltimor (I think it is in...the summer sometime), AWA (Atlantic City I think), Conneticon (is that how it is spelt?), and that huge comic convention that is in..Texas? Flordia? Californa? I dunno where it is, but my friends say it is awesome, especially if you are into comics.

If you do come, feel free to tell me and I'll make sure to run into you sometime during the three days. Nothing like meeting new people (especially from the coast!) and all that jazz :P

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful about Con no Baka, but when it is new, and you know little yourself..*shrugs* You do what you can ^^

Hiya fellow New Brunswicker!
edit: oh! I met you at CNX!

This will be the first Con no Baka. First year cons typically have low attendance and little programming. However, the organizers are trying to start Con no Baka big. It's anyone's guess how successful that attempt will be. If you decide to come, maybe you should have a backup plan if you decide the con is not worthwhile. There's always something to do in Toronto.

There are other (established) cons in Toronto, but not around that time. Specifically, Ad Astra (http://www.ad-astra.org/) in April (25th anniversary) and Toronto Trek (http://www.tcon.ca/) in July.

Maybe you'll find something intersting in the US? For example, Nekocon (http://www.nekocon.org/) is held the same time of year and about the same distance from NB as Toronto is. (Unforunately, you missed it this year.)

Also, I guess it depends on if you want to experience a first time con. This is why me and my friends are going..well, partly ^^

We want to experience a Firstie Con, one that is just starting up. See what it is like, offer our input at the end or something, that kind of things.

(We are also going because we need more cons to go to...:P ones that are close to us at that.)

Missed this thread earlier, sorry. I'm not sure if anyone ever answered this, but as far as I know, the panels are being organized by Fingers, the same person who organizes the panels for Anime North. I was a panelist at AN and he contacted me regarding panels at CNB, so I'm assuming he's the man in charge again.

My friend Katie is going to be a part of three panels. Two are for her University anthropology project. One is a sort of "why are we all involved in this particular fandom?" sort of thing and the other is a yaoi-specific one which she worded as "what's with the chicks diggin' the gay men?" I really hope you all will take time to go to one or more of her panels, since chances are pretty good that if you have valid opinions, you'll end up in her final paper!! Oh, and she's also on the "experts" panel. I think all of these are going to happen on the saturday. See you all there!

Fingers eh? I know that PanelGuru (nick for the person who was doing them on the CnB board) is sick, and Aaron (the chair guy for CnB I think) is now in charge. I suggest emailing him with your questions about the panels, or look at the CnB message board for more info ^^

Fingers is PanelGuru. He uses that name on the Teahouse (AN board) too.

Hi there folks!

Someone over at the Con no Baka forum chat site told me there were some questions going on here that hadn't been answered. I'm not a part of concom, but I'm the one in charge of Saturday night's dance and am in a position to go through and answer some of your questions.
So here goes....

There's a tentative schedule up as of right now (I just looked, but haven't actually examined it) so you can have a boo at what's going on.

Yep, there are two dances:

Friday night's is an anime video dance hosted by the York U club, followed by all-night karaoke.

Saturday night is "you bring it, we play it", where you bring a c/d with the song you want played, hand it to us (The Keith & Gary Show) and we play it - that way you know it'll get played.

More info found by going to the main page and clicking "dances".

You know what? Pretty much everything else that's been asked here is answered on the web page.

If you've been waiting to hear back, well here's the story.
I have too, on some things. Seems like people have been dropping out closer to the con because they volunteered to take on certain tasks and found they were either too much or didn't like it. That's left others having to cover stuff they weren't going to. So don't panic if you don't get a reply. I'm pretty sure that Aaron and the gang haven't had much sleep in the last week, and probably won't get much until after the con.
That's a problem that happens with a first-time con. Once they get their first year out of the way, volunteers shouldn't be that much of a problem.
Hey, if you're free, remember to drop by the volunteer desk and ... well.... volunteer! There are some really great perks!!

One final thing - if you look towards the bottom-left corner of the Con no Baka home page you'll see the link to their forum. Check it out, it's pretty interesting.

Their page is at http://www.connobaka.com/

Hope this helps, and hope to see you there, folks! :drink:

It's kinda hard not to panic with the con being less than 1.5 days away.

Being really busy is understandable, but 2-3+ weeks of no reply to emails is not.
I sincerely hope this communication problem will be better in the coming years of Con no Baka.

I am looking forward to the convention and seeing everyone again though, good luck to the staff/volunteers.

Well, I'm currently fired up and angry because the convention is tomorrow and I haven't gotten the pre-reg forms I'm supposed to bring in tomorrow, and I am in artist's alley, which makes me even more annoyed, since I really need to know where my spot is, and what do I do if they tell me I can't get in the con without those sheets I'm supposed to have printed out?

Yep, they're no doubt at the hotel now. My suggestion is just bring proof (your printout and payment proof). I'm looking after the Saturday night dance, and I haven't received a verification e-mail either! I don't know where I'll be picking up my membership even!!

What can we do? I'm just going to show up with the paperwork and hunt the stuff down. That's about all I can do. First-run cons are usually like this. Once they get Year One out of the way, people will start to volunteer and it'll go a lot smoother next time. Am I worried? Nope. Aaron won't let this crash. It may take a tad of running around on my behalf, but I'll get it sorted out.
See you Saturday! :drink:

I wish I had gotten to this earlier.

Registration is in the lobby foyer of the hotel (says so on the website ^^ I looked last night).

If you don't have your pre-reg forms, bring some sort of photoid or id. Hopefully that will be good enough.

I hope you guys read this before you leave ;.;
