Wasn't this in April last time? Why the change, now its only like a week or so from AX, I might get expo overload @_@ Was it on spring break last time I forget. then again spring break is different for alot of ppl.

It's because they hate us, and want people to be forced to choose between Fanime and AX. I'm going to try for both, since Fanime is right near my bday and I like taking trips every year for my bday. ^_^ I thought that Fanime was close to AX last year as well, but this is going to be my first year, so I don't really know the history or anything...

It was in April last year. Don't quote me on this but I heard the convention center got booked full between April to May so when Fanime went to pick dates they could pick really early or really late in relation to their old date. So they picked June.

Just what I heard... anyone wanna verify that for me?

It kinda ridiculus on Fanime's part. Since they are conventions of the same genre but only thing is, AX is has much more stuff. Since AX is also industry, they get many more companies to come, and able to get better guests. If you were a company, would really want to do all traveling, building, and demotion of your booth area. Obviously this hurts Fanime more because it forces fans, industry, and businesses to choose, since not everyone has the time to do both.

It does suck, and puts my consideration of going Fanime in serious doubt.

I think it's because they think they're a big con and want to compete with AX ~ they think because Fanime is close to AX now, everyone living nearer to Fanime than AX will go to Fanime instead.

but, alas, they have failed. one cannot underestimate the siren call of Anime Expo.

This is not in fact the case. From speaking to Fanime staff, I learned that AJ is correct. The convention center was booked full during their ideal timeframe, which meant that they either had to choose between having substantially less than a full year to organize the event (not a good thing) or push it later and possibly end up in some amount of conflict with AX (also not a good thing). They chose what seemed to them to be the lesser of two evils. There's really no way to tell how much (or how little) they'll be hurt by this competition with AX until the con actually happens.

It was not, in any case, a question of trying to compete directly with AX or deliberately force the fans to choose. There are Fanime staffers who love attending AX (and vice versa). I think there may even be people who try to staff both cons. The Fanime staff are not going to deliberately make a choice of dates that will make things difficult for both their staff and their attendees.

My friend is actually glad that Fanime is in June this year because since it was during the school year last year, she has a better chance of her parents letting her go. I would have gone either way. I plan on attending both Fanime & AX ^^

I'm planning to attend both Fanime and AX just like I did last year.

Mandy: It'll be good to see you again like last year at both Fanime & AX. :)

Fanime is 2 weeks before AX so it gives you a little time to prep if you do plan to go to both. But it won't be the same this year if a lot of familiar faces who go to Fanime each year but reside in So.CA don't drive/fly up here for the con. :(

I'll be attending Fanime because it's not too long a drive for me, and I've been going to Fanime since it started at Hayward college, then to Foothill College, the Wyndham Hotel, and finally settled at the Westin. This will be the first year that I won't be staying at the Westin, due to it being close to AX, and I need the $$ for the AX week. Still, Fanime should be fun. :)

*bounces* I hope I can go, but since its rt after finals and rt before AX I'll need all the time I can get for those last minute costume touch ups! We'll see :)

I'm definately going, because I wouldn't miss Fanime for anything. It was my first convention in 2000. I'm still going to AX, too. ^^;

I'll be going to both, but it means that I'm starting all my costumes substantially earlier this year, otherwise I'd be totally screwed. making them this close together makes it extremely difficult, but I understand the situation the staff is in. hopefully next year the hotel won't be booked in that way, or will be booked earlier.

I like that the date changed, since I won't be dealing with homework and preparing for the convention. Will be going to Fanime, and am planning to go to AX.

I was really wanting to go to Fanime this year, but I'm afraid I won't be able to... It was a choice between Fanime or A-kon. And I chose A-kon since I live in Texas anyways... >>;;; Much cheaper without having to pay for airfare...

But uh...
To all the people who are attending Fanime... Goodluck with your costumes, and have fun! ^^;;

What do you mean the date changed? The last 2 times I went, they were both on memorial weekend, on my birthday.

dont worry sol, the date hasn't changed. it is still going to be held memorial day weekend; the posts at the beginning of this thread were for fanime way back in '02.

Old thread, everyone.. This was referring to Fanimecon 2003, not Fanime 2006..
