I got the info-postcard on the "Afternoon with William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy" for CNX06 and I was surprised to see they called it "Fan Expo Canada" instead of the "Canadian National Expo".

Anyone know anything about this? Why did they change the name? I like "CNX" better than "FEC" ^^; I'm just curious if it's the same thing or if they're making some kind of changes? I looked over hobbystar (http://www.hobbystar.com/)'s website and couldn't find anything, so if anyone knows anything about it, I would love to hear!

I noticed that awhile ago:

Maybe the old name was too long...no idea >_<

So... the name has officially been changed??? Do you think this will effect people's attendance? (I think this new name's kinda .... weak...:p)

Yeah I'm not a huge fan myself, Desdemona!
I just noticed now when I got that in the mail, weird stuff! If I didnt check what con it was (the september threw me off too) I probably would have thrown out the postcard.

The original name The Canadian National Expo was too close to The Canadian National Exhibition.

Also it's now FanExpo Canada, which makes me think that there will soon be FanExpo (somewhere else). Anyhow I'm bound to know soon enough.

Alas, FEC doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely as "CN" or "Crappycon" XD

Wow...that does have a very gross ring to it, doesn't it? Either way it sounds ridiculous: "F-E-C" or "FEK"

.

You have a good point there.
I can see WHY they might have wanted to change it, but I think they could have tried to come up with something a little better.

Hmm.... you know what would have been sweet? If they announced the name change at last year's CN, and then they could have taken a poll from the crowd, or asked around for ideas on what the new name should be!
That would have been great, because then the fans would feel they had some kinda say in the new name - or at LEAST be informed about it.

I'm worried that there might be a lack in attendance if people aren't aware of the name change.

*LOL* Sarcasm-hime, you're so mean ^^;;
but you're right XD it doesn't have that ring T-T

There's already an FX in the states, to my knowledge not run by Hobbystar.

Oh and the shortform will probably just FX or FX Canada. Probably... blah.

Vicky

hmmm... I guess i could live with FXC... ^^

TribalButterfly
11-30-2005, 07:45 AM
eh, i guess if we have no choice then we have to live with whatever they've changed it to - still doesn't roll off the tounge as well as CN though :p

Michi
11-30-2005, 11:38 AM
Yeah, I think it's supposed to be "FXC".. the X in the logo is made bigger than the E and it seems like it's for a reason. XD; ...Maybe it's Fan-X. XDDD

I guess they got to such a big point that it made more sense to give it a different name? Having the main con be "Canadian National Expo" and all the smaller parts being stuff like "Canadian National Anime Expo" was a bit weird after a while, I suppose.

At least the anime con is still CNAnime? :D

Vicky
11-30-2005, 12:11 PM
Yeah that makes sense~ CNAnime matched CNX, but "The Canadian National Festival of Fear" not so much? I don't know ^^;

They should just call it Giant X and we can all be happy with an Otaku No Video name. Hehee.

*LOL* now there's an idea!

Brita_Lee

I'll still refer to it as CNA. I'm just too used to it. Or call it effects, like eFeX! SPECIAL FX! Or....something. o__O' I think I worked too hard tonoight and burst a brain cell or two mopping.

Vicky
12-09-2005, 06:30 PM
it's still "CNA" technically. but some of us never called it "CNA" to begin with, because they didn't just GO to the "CNA" section of it... so that's basically what I mean :)

Brita_Lee
12-10-2005, 12:50 AM
LOL! True enough. XP Silly me.

Vicky
12-10-2005, 12:04 PM
No worries :)
I know what you mean though, that would have been silly if they changed the names of the individual sections as well x_x

AncientWanderer
12-10-2005, 05:33 PM
Well, as Vicky mentioned, I wouldn't so much mind the changing of the Festival of Fear, because the whole name is just....ridiculous. Who's going to call it that from day to day, REALLY?! "Bye mom! I'm going to the Canadian National Festival of Fear!"

Okay, I'm with Brita on this one....a part of my brain most definitely imploded tonight. Excuse all weird comments, just nod and smile and it'll all be okay.

They should just call it Giant X and we can all be happy with an Otaku No Video name. Hehee.

You're just....my favourite for saying that lol. :bigtu:

Here is the final, official answer to the conjecture,

Each feature of the Expo is retaining it's title, CNAnime, SFX, et al. But the "Master Brand" formerly, Canadian National Expo, will change to Fan Expo Canada.

There were many, (uninteresting), reasons to change it, including, it didn't really say anything in the first place, and it is too close to the CNE.

Hobbystar also wanted something shorter for web domain which will also change to www.fanexpocanada.com (http://www.fanexpocanada.com). All the old stuff will work, and folks can still the old names, we will only use Fan Expo Canada when we are referring to the entire show, each event will still have it's own title, logo, guest list, advertising etc

Hopefully this satifies everyone's curiosity.

Cheers!

Man! They're making it very hard to search for stuff related to them on the web! Off the top of my head, I know of 3 main names (Canadian National Expo, Fan Expo Canada and Toronto Comic Con), 5 subnames (Canadian National Comic Book Expo, Canadian National Science Fiction Expo, Canadian National Horror Expo, Canadian National Anime Expo and Canadian National Gaming Expo), one alternate subname (Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear), and at least 6 commonly used abbrieviations (CNE, CNX, CNA, CNAX, CNAnime, SFX).

SFX already make me think of sex everytime I see it. Really don't need more inappropriate words swimming in my head. >_>;;

Woo! More naughty words! Hahahaha. But not from a con name.....I guess.

Vicky

You guys all read my mind.
I wish everyone would just call it by it's main name (FXC, formerlly CNX) rather than the smaller cons (CNAnime, SFX, Festival of Fear, etc.). I've been just calling it CNX (or FXC now) for years and you'd be amazed at how many people have no idea what it is -_-*
And it causes confusion.

Well, it's easy to appeal to everyone if you just make up dozens of names.

Meh, I'd prefer if they just called it the All Purpose Con, APC for short. :P But that's just me.
I suggest once to change my anime club around so it was like CNX (instead of just anime, it would include sci-fi, fantasy, video games, etc), but my anime buddies weren't as willing to make the change. I had suggested calling us the All Purpose Club.

Vicky
12-27-2005, 02:28 PM
LOL all-purpose, that's cute

DO u think they'll change the title of this forum, since it's not called CN anymore?

MaiSheri
01-04-2006, 11:15 PM
Probably not, since the anime portion is still called CNAnime, and as the rest of the programming wasn't aknowledged in the title before, that's not likely to change now.

I've been asking the Admin to change it, as well as fix an error in one of the Anime North's in the database, for ages now. I think it's safe to say he's not biting *sigh*

The Anime Event portion of the show is still called CNAnime, so I'm not sure what would be gainned by changing the forum title, I think it would just create confusion.

I'm not sure what the Error in the Anime North Database is, but instead of PMing Admin, (who's currently really busy with the site upgrades), why not bring it to the attention of Heki, since she's the Mod for the Canadian Forums?

If she cannot fix it, (I'm not sure as I don't know the nature of the problem), she's probably more likely to get Admin's attention in regards to getting it done. :) She's away this weekend at Ohayocon, but I'm sure she'll return your PM as soon as she's back. :)

I hope this is helpful.
Cheers! :)

Well it's mostly just an annoyance. i don't see why we have to refer to it only by the anime section when FXC is so much MORE than that, that's all.

that's a good idea, I will PM her about it if the Admin doesn't get around to it sometime this weekend :)
