I don't know if you guys have read or seen the Hellsing Manga, but the main baddies, the Millenium group are a bunch of Nazi's... vampire nazi's and in our Hellsing group we have a Rip Van Wrinkle. Now she wears a swastica and my friend doesn't want to wear one. I'm okay with that, its just when i was on a board and someone was talking about switching the swastica to something else like a smiley face. I wouldn't do that ever. If you picked a costume that has a swastica, you either wear it, don't wear it, or pick another costume. Don't change it to something else. Thats almost insulting to the mangaka.
Any thoughts?

Hmmn I'm debating making Portgas D. Ace's costume and on his back he has a swastica type thing as a tatoo and I'd do that but my parents would slaughter me If I put that on me so that's why the costume is still up in the air. I think this kinda thread happened before with Die from Dir en Grey wearing one but it's always an interesting topic.

There was a big old thread about wearing swastika's on a costume in the jrock forum - it's locked now but you can read it:

http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5813

to save you the trouble, the general response is: NO, do NOT wear a skwastica. switch it with something else.

it is NOT offensive to the mangaka, trust me. there is a reason why the VILLAINS are the Nazis in Hellsing.

if I were you..i'd just knock off the extra digts and make them into X's

Rosiel gets shit from ppl for her azulith uniform Rosiel costume...and it has no swastikas or stuff...its just a vinyl military-esque uniform w/ a WWII style generals hat and riding crop....

yes it might be a costume....but it STILL would offend ppl.....if I saw someoen cosplaying a character that happens to have anti gay or anti jap or anti white messages....I would be VERY offended even tho its just a "costume" it still reflects your choice and taste in such matters. Its your CHOICE to wear the swastika or not...but just be mindful as to what might come of it.

Yep, if you wear a swastika then you're just asking to get your ass kicked, costume or not. If people even think that you're some neo-nazi then your life would not be easy.

How many people know that the swastika is actually an ancient (THOUSANDS of years before the Nazis) that means good fortune? (for those who didn't know now you've got somehting to tell your friends. ^_~)

I find it a shame that the nazis used this symbol for themselves and now everyone thinks of them when they see it...*shakes fist* >_<

Swastikas aren't taken very seriously by some mangaka. Hell, Pixi Misa from Pretty Sami has an attack where she throws swastikas at Pretty Sami.

If I chose a costume that happened to have a swastika on it, I would make it simply for the love of the character design and I would want to be as close to the design as possible. However I would be very careful if I were to wear it to a con or anything. I would be comfortable knowing that it didn't mean anything to me, but I would be wary of what people would do who didn't understand it was a costume.

Of course there will be other people who will disagree and it is very likely you would get grief for it. So I'm saying Iwould do it, and I wouldn't tell you not to, but pretty much everyone else would. *laugh*

Luckily I havn't come across any costumes with questionable symbols on them that I want to make ^___^

The language of symbols, like the language of words, changes. It now no longer matters how old the symbol is or what it used to be used for or what it's used for in other cultures. It is a Nazi symbol now. I expressed my views on this very thoroughly in the other thread and will not repeat them here, except to sum them up thusly: DO NOT WEAR IT. ANYWHERE. EVER.

Well, actually, not everyone thinks "Nazi" when they see the swatsika,(this string being proof!) hell,I read a manga where the hero is a martial-arts-master-monk guy with a swatsika tattoed on his forehead!
Problem is,Nazi's made the biggest statement with their swatsika ideology.

Bottom line is,if you really want to wear a swatsika,go for it.Just don't expect to come out of the con without taking (at the very least) *lots* of flak from people.

From what I remember reading on the Anime Expo board when the topic came out... it seems you'd come out of the con pretty fast... escorted by security. X___X

Cons don't want to be associated with anything that could be seen as neo-nazi (obviously!) and I doubt any con security would let attendees run around with swastikas on their costumes (good for them!).

You have a point... ^__^
I'll remove my long post so as not to introduce new issues just before closing off discussion.

Everyone go look at the original thread if you want to know how people feel about this!
