Yo Yo Yo-

In one of the other forums, a thread was started to see how many black folk were cosplaying or on the this site, so me being from a Korean mother and American (german ancestry) father, and born in Pusan, Korea, (my father was a marine, so you kinda get the idea...) but raised in the US since I was 1.5 yrs old. I used to have dual citizenship when I was younger, now just a US citizen...but definitely look predominantly korean/asian, even with a white father...

I'd like to find out how many Koreans we got up in here...

So Give a shout out if you got the Korean thing goin' on!

Much Respect-

Hello fellow KPride people!
For those of us out there, do you make it back to Korea very often?
Any experiences you would like to share on cosplay & anime related events / culture in Korea? the whole point of me starting this thread was to first, find out who the korean folk were on this site, and second discuss cosplay/anime related things pertaining to korea & koreans in particular amongst the "korean perspectives".....if that makes sense?

I am going to Seoul either this fall 06 or spring 07 (looking like next spring 07)....my friends who live there now tell me anime and cosplay is popular, but at different stages in life and in a slightly different manner, than either the US or Japan...i would like to catch a korean convention next year though...

btw- since this is the korean cosplay forum, are we supposed to write in korean? romanized korean??? :confused: :)

I was adopted into a Maryland home, but I'm Korean as well. Born in Suwon City, I've only been back there once. Still, I have the KPride a Korean should have! ;)

I heard cosplay was very popular during high school years... but many stop once it gets close to the entrance exams. I know in one of the other threads there was some info on Korean conventions @ _@

Lol... I don't know if we're supposed to write in Korean or "Konglish"/romanized but I think that's what the purpose of the Korean thread was in the first place @_ @

Wazzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~! 8D

Are you guys all on the West Side? Too bad I'm in Maryland =T

Ooh Ooh! I didn't go to an ANIME convention in Korea, but more of a cute(sanrio type) convention 3 years ago. No one really dressed up, but there were so many cute booths giving out free stuff and advertising their own cute characters including Pucca! There was also a concert and lalalala it was boring 8)

This year, I am going to Korea for a church mission trip in July! YUS!! <3

Maryland Sux! The President Lives Here!!! Aiiiiiiish ><

Actually DC isn't a part of MD, it's just next to it. But I feel your pain ;) And actually there are like a billion Koreans in MD. I can't go two miles without seeing a Korean Church!

Just thought I'd say hi. I'm not Korean (to my knowledge), but I taught myself Hangul back in middle school. I could never really get too much of the spoken language because in high school, all the Korean kids hated me and made fun of me because I was a "white guy" learning Korean, and apparently that's a huge no-no [Rolls his eyes].

Maryland Sux! The President Lives Here!!! Aiiiiiiish ><

There are a few koreans in the Detroit area....even though the president lives close to MD, which really sucks, I would still like to live closer to more korean folk...I will be at Otakon this year, so maybe i can see/meet up with some fellow asian cosplay.com peoples!

bamboocactus- Yeah, as for being a white guy up in korean culture, koreans can be just as ignorant as anybody. I think what you experienced is the fact that koreans/korean americans seriously get made fun of in america, and when koreans have just a little piece of anything in this country, the thought process is: "here comes a white guy trying to take up what's ours, when basically everything in america belongs to white people...why get in our business? can we at least have this little piece to call our own?"

I totally feel you and agree those people were wrong for hating, but at the same time, you should just be informed as to why korean folk or any minority race may hate on a white guy...it's not right, but it makes sense. Sometimes you gotta realize that things are unequal or aren't right, but won't change completely in the forseeable future. All you can do is spread unity, and over time, things will change! People will notice you aren't prejudiced, if you truly aren't! Thanks for sharing in the korean forum!

:bigtu:
You taught yourself Hangul? *envy* I'm trying to now, semi-actively when I have time. >.< The writing seems easier to me than the spoken language. o.O It is the opposite to me with say Mandarin and Japanese, where I find the spoken language easier than the written.

I agree, it is kind of harder to find minorities willing to help to teach you about their culture/language/etc. when they may feel that you're trying to take it. It's the fear of that kind of response, not to mention the fact that I'm embarrassingly shy, that kept me from actively trying to seek out friends who might have had that knowledge. I should have asked my Tae Kwon Do teacher when younger, he was from South Korea. >.< Blah, hindsight's 20/20.

O.O How rude of me.

Hello, everyone. I'm also not Korean, but have been interested in the language, music, manwha, clothing, culture, etc. for a while. ^_^ I hope you don't mind my interceding in this thread, thank you.

...Which is kind of pushing my point. If a group of individuals is going to live in a country with a culture that is not natively theirs, they had better not get offended when other people take interest and want to become a part of their culture. Being born and raised in the States, I'm painfully aware of the fact that Americans are disgustingly cut off from the rest of the world. If it weren't for the fact that our president makes a hobby of bombing them, most Americans probably wouldn't even be aware of the existence of a world outside of our borders. It's sick. However, there are people, like myself and ChaosButterfly, along with every single person on this board obviously, who ARE aware of other countries, peoples, and cultures, and are very interested in partaking in them and being included. It sucks being stuck with one culture, one close-minded people your entire life. It's not like we're in Europe where we can hop on a bus and visit 5 countries in a day. It's a breath of fresh air to be exposed to other cultures, and when an individual takes a sincere interest in learning about my culture, I certainly am flattered and would do anything I could to accomodate them and teach them what they wanted to know. But for a group of people to come to a foreign land and settle into a foreign culture while still trying to keep their own, and then become INSULTED when the people who accomodate them take an interest... that's pretty ignorant, and I don't think there's any justification for it. "White people" aren't trying to "steal" your "culture". And it certainly isn't as base as "white people" and "not white people". Those are distinctions of the past, and even on that, those are distinctions made by the most horribly ignorant and hateful minds that our world had to offer. When I see a group of people walking around in a small pack, taking confidence and safety in the fact that they have other people like them around, going on about hating whiteys and honkeys and crackers and all (and trust me, I've seen plenty an Asian do this.), I think back to all the ignorance and persecution that minorities and majorities alike have faced in the past, and I harbour absolutely no respect for anybody who could ever think like that.

So, that's my two cents. No, it isn't right, but no, it certainly does not make sense. At least not from a humanitarian, or fair point of view. But of course if all people truly cared about one another, the world would be very different. ^^;

I'm glad a lot of people take interest in the korean culture! I think it makes me more proud to be Korean when there are others who are not Korean and want to take an active part in learning the culture.

I'll admit, not all koreans like "outsiders" learning about culture. But they don't always like "mixed" people like me either, who is a mix of Korean and Chinese. They're very nationalist, which is nice and bad at the same time.

But I'm glad you guys are interested, and I'll try to help every way I can ^_^

BambooCactus- Just to clarify, i too am trying to learn more about modern korean culture and am honored when non-korean folk take interest as well, the thoughts i offered in my above post, weren't how i think, just a general mentality that i am aware of that exists among many koreans/minorities i know. I'm half korean, even though i can half way decently read, write, speak korean, i get serious hate from some koreans myself! I don't know what to say, i am sorry you have had bad experiences with koreans. i hope this doesn't affect how you view us on cosplay.com!! :p we're not all that bad!!

ChaosButterfly- There was a manhwa thread a while back...it might give you some good information on korean manga! There was also a thread on hanboks, traditional, elaborate korean clothing. I think it's great you are interested in korean culture!

So let's discuss cosplay/convention related things pertaining to korea!

I have been trying to obtain more information on current cosplay/convention and such in korea, and have a little information, but not a lot. In terms of anime, Wonderful Days is a pretty good korean anime....i will have much more to report next spring on current korean conventions and cosplay, as this will be my next trip to Seoul, where i intend on participating in cosplaying at a convention...

The other korean folk on this site may be much more helpful in providing information on korean anime/cosplay/convention culture than me! :)

**there are many things that i can share with you on korean culture, but not related to this forum, so i guess pm me if you are interested**

hibekisenai-
hey wanted to tell you about a little bit of korean conventions. im not sure if you've been to korea or korean conventions before, but its very different from american ones. first of all, i was very surprised when i heard about the american conventions due to $$$$$ difference. holy crap, in korea conventions are about 5000won, thats like 5 dollars. in america, its like..what..50 dollars? about ten times the price! but its true that american cons are in nice hotels and all so they do deserve to get paid more. korean cons are held in convention centers, big centers usually used for business conventions and stuff. nobody sleeps in hotel for cons. they all just go home after convention and go back the next day. no need for hotel when public transportation is so well organized~ i personally find american cons better though, since there are so many programs and all. korean cons are more for looking at cosplayers, and huge dealers room. there arent many organized events.

and about your communication problem, im not gonna lie to you and say, oh dont worry about it~ cos it will be hard since its a homogeneous country with all korean speaking people. it also depends on how you look: if you look asian, its definitely gonna be harder since everyone is gonna speak to you in korean. if you look non-asian, its gonna be easier cos people are gonna know you dont speak korean. only young people can speak in english, that is, teens and people in their 20s mostly, and they all pretty much speak broken english. very bad english with limited words too ^^; but if you are lucky, you might be able to find people that lived in america. but thats a pretty slim chance.

i hope you luck on the trip in 2007 though. im sure it will be difficult but a lot of fun as well. to which part are you going? will you be visiting cons? if so, which one?

^hi! thanks for the great information on the conventions in korea. My friend Hyun who live in Seoul has told me about a big Anime Con in the like May/June timeframe right in Seoul....she has been really busy with studies so she doesn't get too involved in cosplay activities at the moment...I have been to Korea, and somewhat know what to expect, though i was a lot younger...I will obviously be flying into Incheon and staying in Seoul for a week, then travelling to Busan, and maybe a few other locations, whatever my friends in Seoul plan for me to see. Total trip will be a month. I think i will be ok before i go because many of my korean friends in the US help me tons and tons in getting back to holding conversations in korean and helping me read better!! (i hate to read in english as well!! lol) Yeah, i have an american father, but i am very very asian looking, so that will be a blessing and a curse, people now in america will start talking to me very fast in korean, and i have to ask them to please slow way down, and then they speak english!!! lol...So as for the conventions, yeah the dealers rooms are HUGE in korea, i have so many souvenirs that my korean friends have sent......nice to meet more koreans on this site!

I planned to go to A-kon, but due to a technicality with the "Win a Lunch Date with Kristine Sa" rules that I totally have an issue with, in all likelihood i won't go....well, that's not the ONLY reason... I found out i have to go out of town on business, so looks like a no...:(

Hmmm next year I'm thinking of going down to the US for some cons =) Not sure which ones yet though.

jiyoon- you live in Toronto? I LOVE Toronto!! I go there several times a year!! I usually stay at the downtown Marriott, I think it's close to Dundas Square....I know the city quite well, love the subway system layout!! The food is pretty good, i just really don't like Canadian beef though....

So anyway, you should seriously consider coming to Youmacon this November!!! It's about a 4 hour drive from Toronto to Troy, MI (suburb of Detroit) where the convention is held....You can also catch Greyhound Bus from Toronto to Windsor to Detroit, if you have time and don't feel like driving.
There are other people from Toronto who were there last year...You also aren't too far from Buffalo, i just don't know of any Cons there...

btw- fyi- YG Entertainment is going to put on a concert this fall (sometime after august 19, as this is their Seoul concert date) in NYC...pretty much all the YG artists, including se7en, 1TYM, etc...i will post this info in the music forum as well...

Ahn young! nice to meet more yoja hanguk! are you going to Otakon this year? I am definitely going...i may only cosplay Saturday, and in all likelihood it will be Prince of Tennis...something simple, comfortable, and heat friendly!
hmmm..so you like korean media, eh? I have like unlimited resources when it comes to free korean media...hehe..pm me if you are interested...you may already know what i know...

YG Entertainment? YAY~~~ Will definitely think about going to that~ But I have to talk to my workplace first. I work for Toshiba on summer contract, so they're kind of tight about me taking holidays~ Or maybe I can just call in sick *coughcough* !

Youmacon sounds cool, but I don't want to go if I don't know anyone there T_T It's kinda lonely being by yourself at a con in a foreign place hahaha~ Plus it's during uni.. so it's harder too T_T Lots of projects... But I am going to be living alone in downtown, so maybe I can sneak away for a bit >_____>;; I will have to take greyhound since I'm sure my parents will know if a car is missing from their house lol.

I used to have a cyworld, but I forgot my username and my password hahahaha. It's lost somewhere...

Lots of Korean people in Toronto, and a lot of Koreans in my building too~ I will meet them when I move in I guess hahaa.

Subway system is not bad in Toronto... it could be better. But it's not bad.

Nope, I didn't know Korea had any conventions.
Plus, I've gotten into cosplaying only this year.
I wish I had though...
Maybe when I'm in Korea next time.
What are some of the conventions in Korea?

There really isnt such big convention in Korea though. Weekly, people go cosplaying in one of the theme parks in Seoul. I forget, my aunt told me about it when she came over for summer.

Yeah I intend going back to Seoul in the spring to visit a friend there was trying to find some sort of activity that would be going on to attend. Ok and to go to Lotte World/Park cause it was so much fun ^_^;

i remember another theme park INSIDE a building(maybe a mall?). i remember being amazed that they had one(note, that it was big enough to be a theme park, but not BIG as in scale of our six flags etc.) it just really took me surprise that it was INDOORs.

That's it! I remember riding Gyro Drop or whatever... then I remember the kimchi I ate going spew shortly thereafter.

yeah I also remember going someplace that had and indoor park. Cannot remember if that was Lotte or some other place... been so long... gah 7 years. Must go back soon to visit friends real soon. And of course to be cosplay with them cause they say no one cosplays around them ;__;

kiwi_lady
08-17-2006, 11:21 AM
yeap its Lotte X3!
the biggest indoor theme park in the world i believe!
They also have an ice link INSIDE of the mall O_O;;;
so special XD;

korean cosplays i believe is mostly within school friend kinda deal.. some of them even has cosplay clubs +_+!

Ciarathallya
08-17-2006, 12:08 PM
Yeah indoor water rides... then the rollcoaster O_O. Wow! I had never seen such a thing. The shopping mall... restaurant, museum too I think. Lotte World is pretty great.

So there's in school cosplay clubs? Ooooh that's why he's having trouble finding cosplayers there. Ok. I need to tell my friend right away. He went to Seoul with the hope of attending cons and cosplaying.

리하!
lotte is awesome! the movie theater is top notch too...From my experiences, cosplay for the most part is not insanely popular in korea, and it is mostly within a younger age group as many eventually go off to fulfill military duty or are busy studying for transfer university, TOEFL iBT...there are 2 major anime/comic conventions in Korea, but they are a lot different than western conventions.

Ciarathallya
08-17-2006, 12:18 PM
hibekisensai: Thank you very much! So only two conventions? Wow not popular indeed.

Now I understand why people there were trying to find Americans to study English. I didn't realize that the language exam was such a big deal.
